IT’S TIME TO GET HEALTHY
It’s a fact - when students are healthy, they feel better. And when they feel better, they are
more likely to succeed in school. Research shows that a healthy school environment enhances
learning and success in school, and provides academic, social, emotional and physical
benefits. The recognition program engages students by helping them take their health into
their own hands and providing them with the tools they need to lead active, healthy lives in
the future. The Healthy Schools Recognition Program is a great way to encourage students to
start thinking about what they can do to make their lifestyle, and their school, healthier.
It’s easy to participate: schools simply pledge to do a healthy activity. The pledge can build on
an existing activity, such as expanding an intramural program or it can be something brand
new, such as introducing a new bullying prevention program. Schools will then receive a
pennant and a certificate in recognition of their commitment to being healthier.
Team work is an important aspect of the Healthy Schools Recognition program and
organizing a healthy activity is a fun way for parents, students and school staff to work
together. In past years, participating schools have successfully organized a wide range of
activities, including:
Planting a vegetable garden on school grounds
Establishing a daily running or walking club
Starting a recycling or composting program
Inviting health professionals to speak with students about fitness and teen health.
What activities do you think our students at Greenbriar Senior Public School can benefit the
most from?
If you have a great idea for a healthy activity, want to encourage healthier living in
Greenbriar, or just want to learn more, please come to the School Council meeting
on Wednesday, March 23rd (see opposite page for details).
Visit www.ontario.ca/healthyschools for ideas, success stories and a pledge form.
Greenbriar promoted French culture during Bonhomme Carnavale week. Students enjoyed participating in a variety of activities such as a Pancake Breakfast (where 1600 delicious pancakes were consumed by students and staff), a colouring contest and a presentation Carnaval de Québec by Mariposa. To conclude the week, cut-outs of Bonhommes were hidden in the classrooms to be found by the students and taken to Mrs. Peyer for a prize. Merci à tout pour la participation! Ms. Kolomayz

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes
taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome” Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672)
February was a busy month at Greenbriar, especially in the Library. The library helpers have been a great
support and they are truly appreciated. Most of the students who signed up for the Forest of Reading
program have read the required number of books. They are reminded to hand in their Reflection Sheet in
order to vote in April and go on the celebration trip in May. As well, many classes contributed to celebrating
Canadian Black History Month at Greenbriar. Many classes have been completing the Canadian Black
History Activity Card. Classes 7E6, 7T1, 8A6, and 8K1 have been involved in a rotating display in the front
hall of the school. Students from Ms. English’s class have been presenting brief biographies during the
morning announcements about various Black Canadians who have positively contributed to the fabric of
Canadian society. At last Friday’s Spirit Assembly, we enjoyed the presentation given by Vanessa A,
Sachreet C, Sachin N, and Melissa P. Mrs. Boyd would like to thank all of the students and staff who have
been so supportive in this endeavor.
This Friday, we are beginning the second “Clear your Overdue Library Account” contest. Classes
compete against their grade level to get all of their overdue library books checked into the library. Students
are reminded that if the item is lost or damaged, they need to pay $10.00 for paperback and $20.00 for hard
cover towards the purchase of another book.
YOTC—SLICE Once again, Greenbriar students were given the opportunity to register for this free ‘Learn to Skate’ Camp, held at the Greenbriar Rec Centre. It runs after school from 3—5 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The first hour is enjoyed on ice, learning and perfecting the art of skating. The 2nd hour includes off-ice activities (board games, guest speakers). It started on Tuesday, March 1st, and will run until March 24th, excluding the week of March Break!!
Science Fair
On Wednesday, March 9th, there is a school-wide Science Fair. Students in Grades 6, 7 and 8 have been offered the options by their Science Teacher to conduct an experiment and display their results in the school gym. Students were given an opportunity to visit the displays by donating 50 cents towards Free The Children. Winners of the Science Fair will be announced on Thursday, March 10th for each grade level. Grade 7 and 8 student winners will be invited to attend the Peel-wide Science Fair in April.
Cyber-Bullying On Thursday, March 3rd, our NPU (Neighbourhood Police Unit) spoke to all Grade 7 Greenbriar students to give them techniques to identify and avoid the dangers of cyber-bullying. They spoke about networking (Facebook, Twitter, etc), chatrooms, emails, webcams and other related internet connections. It is hoped that students will have armed themselves with the knowledge to use the internet safely.
Switch off for Earth Hour Take a stand, join the movement! Turn off your lights for one hour on March 26 at 8:30pm and take
action on climate change. Count yourself in!
Visit www.wwf.ca/earthhour to pledge your support and find out how you and your school can get
involved.
Earth hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000
businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change.
Last year, Earth Hour became the biggest Earth Hour ever reaching 1.3 billion people. On March 27,
2010, a record 128 countries and territories united across the globe making it the largest voluntary
action ever witnessed. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the
Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came
together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common - our planet.
Earth Hour 2011 will continue to be a call to action to every individual, every business and every
community throughout the world. A call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the
global journey to a sustainable future.
Continue learning at home during March break Suggestions for grades 6 to 8
In the news As a family, choose an important news event to follow for a day or two. Ask each person to find as
much information on the topic as possible—read newspapers, listen to the radio, and watch television
news. Then talk about what everyone learned.
Pro and con: what do you think? Make a family game of discussing a special issue. For example, “Teenagers should be allowed to vote,”
or “There should never be any homework.” Ask your youngsters to think of all the reasons they can to
support their views. Then ask them to think of reasons opposing their views. Which views are most
convincing? For variety, assign family members to teams and have them prepare a pro or con argument.
Promote citizenship
Help your child write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper about an issue affecting children—for
example, suggest that a bike path be built near the school or that a city event be planned for youngsters.
Children are citizens, and their ideas are worth hearing.
Stretch, run, bike Encourage your child to do at least one kind of exercise every day. Run or walk briskly for 10 minutes.
Help your youngster make a week-long exercise plan. Think of a modest reward for sticking to the plan,
and set a good example by exercising along with your child.
Visit www.peelschools.org for more Parent Tip Sheets.
School Hours – proposed change for September 2011 A proposal has been developed for the Board to consider regarding changing Greenbriar’s school
hours. There are many reasons for the proposed school hour change: student safety and student supervi-
sion; minimizing the loss of valuable instructional time for students while supporting student participation
in extra curricular activities with other middle school students; earlier dismissal from after-school pro-
grams especially in the winter months; and changing to first run busing and therefore reducing bus delays/
late arrivals. If the change is approved, Greenbriar's schools hours will be aligned with most middle
schools in Bramalea East (Williams Pkwy, Balmoral, Earnscliffe and Calderstone). Feel free to contact
Mrs. Peyer if you would like to know more about the proposal. The Board’s decision will not be avail-
able until late March or early April. Any updates will be included in our monthly Newsletters.
Proposed school hours for September 2011:
start time 8:20 am
dismissal time 2:20 pm
Student Telephone Usage
From time to time, emergencies arise necessitating students to make a phone call. In order to alleviate long line-ups prior to lunchtime and before the end of the school day, we encourage students to use the student payphone. For this, they will need to bring 50 cents or a calling card when they want to make phone calls (ie forgot gym clothes, forgot lunch, need a ride home from basketball practice, etc).
Games Club The games club continues in its quest to save the town of Drellin's Ferry. Our adventures have battled against many monsters and enlisted aid in finding their way around the Dark Forest. Recently, the heroes have captured the Vrath Keep, discovering its secrets and the plans the Red Hand of Doom has for the beleaguered town of Drellin's Ferry. Their next objective is to scout out the bridge at Skull Gorge and prevent the hordes from the Red Hand of Doom from rushing down from the mountains and attacking the peaceful farmers of the land.
Winter Activity Day A hugely successful day. Students reported having a fabulous time and positive comments were received from the public about our students. Activities included volleyball, soccer, tennis, badminton, yoga, cooking, skiing, dance, outdoor games, and cooperative games. Thanks to all staff involved in the organization and to all students for their wonderful participation.
Highschool
Transition Please inform the school if your child has accepted a program other than Chinguacousy SS so that they are not registered in more than one secondary school. All students applying to Chinguacousy SS should have received a course confirmation form. Please let Guidance know if you did not receive one to ensure that your child has submitted options.
The Chess Club meets every Day 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and 10. The grade level tournaments
will be over by the end of March and the winners will be recognized at a future spirit assembly. The board office tournament is the last week of April. Five students from each grade will be representing Greenbriar at this event. Best of luck to all players.
Breakfast Club is alive
and well. Greenbriar provides breakfast on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:15 until 8:40. All students are welcome to join us—don’t forget your 50 cents. Thank you to the volunteers who provide, not only good nutrition breakfast, but a warm and encouraging smile in the morning!
WINTER ARTS SHOWCASE
On the evening of Wednesday, February 9th, the Music and Visual Arts Departments presented the Winter Arts Showcase here at Greenbriar. What a great night it was!! A true celebration of the Arts here at Greenbriar. The evening began with the Art Gallery in the main hallway. While parents and guests enjoyed viewing the incredible Visual Art display, music students played live music in the form of duets and trios. The Show began with the Grade 8 Band entering the gym while playing "Tonight's Gonna be a Good Night" by the Black Eyed Peas on their instruments. Beautiful music was sung by the Grade 8 Vocal Ensemble and the Choir and the Jazz Band had everyone's foot tapping to the beat of "Sing Sing Sing!" At one point, all three Arts combined while the Grade 7 Band performed a melodic piece, a dancer created lyrical movement and three artists created paintings to the music right on stage! The Grade 6 Band made their debut with the rockin' "Let's Go Band!” What great playing! It was a lot of fun watching the enthusiasm of all the students involved - from the students who worked the snack table, to the students who MC’d, to the students who performed. Everyone made this a "Good, Good Night!" You won’t want to miss the Spring Arts Showcase on May 25th. Ms. T. Edwards
K I W A N I S
The Grade 8 Band (44 members) and the Grade 7 Band (63 members) attended the Kiwanis Music Festival in Toronto this past week on February 28th and March 2nd. Our category at this music festival involved bands from other middle schools across the GTA who came together to compete by playing two contrasting pieces. The pieces were critiqued by two guest adjudicators who gave practical feedback to the students from each group to help further their musical growth and experience. Our Greenbriar students p resen ted themse lves l i ke t rue professionals. They played very well and were very respectful of the other groups who performed. They were each open to hearing constructive feedback from the judges and were very open to the experience overall. Our Grade 8 Band was awarded a SILVER - 2nd place standing with a mark of 85%! The Grade 7 Band was awarded a SILVER - 3rd place standing with a mark of 82%! These students made their teachers and their school so proud! This experience will be remembered by the students for many years to come! Thank you for a great time students! Ms. T. Edwards
