From the Editor

A bumper issue this month, packed full of intrigue, information and

protestations (sorry couldn’t think of a third ‘i’ word).

The Co-op’s decision to sell newspapers continues to stir the pot of controversy and we have a plea to all you recyclers who use the fabulous facility at school.

There are charity events and news of fun and games at the Bowling Club. Please keep the information coming.

On a personal, selfish note, if submissions to the Voice can be emailed through to me that would make my life a lot easier. I appreciate we don’t all have access to computers and emails but as my proof readers will attest, my typing skills are lousy and it would help reduce the number of typos every month. Thank you.

Pete Hawkins

The Lightening Tree - a response

I am writing with regard to the threat to cut down the Lightening Tree because

there have been concerns that the tree may be dangerous. Why?

The tree appears to be no more dangerous than any other tree. Surely the money would be better spent on more worthwhile projects. The idea of a bench in its place, when there is one already up there that I have never seen anyone use seems ridiculous. Can’t we cut the branches shorter so the tree can be saved?

This tree is part of Tideswell’s history and will be still standing long after most of us have long gone.

Dear Editor

I feel someone must write to alert our community to a slightly delicate social

issue.

I am quite concerned to see the breadmaking course at the lovely Tideswell School of Food priced at only £135.00. I mean, has this price been properly thought out?

I did a few quick calculations and, worryingly, as quite a number of local people buy their bread for 75 pence a loaf, one of those kinds of families need only do without bread for 12 months or so in order to buy a place on the course!

How on earth is the School of Food to maintain a nice standard of clientele at those prices? In fact, one of those average type of families probably only needs to go without food for a fortnight in order to lower the tone of a School of Food cookery course by sending along one of it’s members. The damage could be irreparable, what is the marketing man thinking? Surely he should maintain a sensible pricing structure that reminds ordinary people that they are second class citizens, or heaven knows who we might find on the

cookery courses.

Let’s hope that by holding most courses on a weekday, they will manage to keep up a suitable standard of good taste (excuse the pun ha ha ) simply by being too inconvenient for any of the working people.

The Taste Tideswell project has a duty to ensure that the lottery money benefits the right kind of local person.

Yours, Helen Robinson

From the Tideswell School of Food

We agree that it is important to ensure that our range of cooking

courses can offer opportunities to all Tideswell residents. We are already planning a series of cookery clubs and sessions with a price point equivalent to a couple of pints of beer, and these will be publicised throughout the village.

As with any start up (or indeed, well-established) business, we will sometimes get things wrong – if we have here, please accept our apologies. We are pleased to report that courses are proving popular and filling up well, and look forward to extending the range to suit the widest possible audience.

Hay Fever and other allergiesSeeing the catkins on the willow down by the river Wye in Ashford-in-the-Water is a heartening sight, a sign that spring is on the way.

After a particularly early and cold winter in the Peak District we are set for a blooming spring. For some hay fever sufferers though it will mean months of misery

and a pocket full of tissues spoiling their enjoyment of the warmer sunny days.

Did you know that the Cromford based company Weleda produce a wide range of Homeopathic natural remedies to help hay fever sufferers.

You may also find long term health benefits from undergoing a course of Homeopathic treatment.

Funding Surgeries

The Derbyshire Community Foundation will soon be holding their annual

funding surgeries.

These annual events give you the opportunity to discuss your funding requirements with one of the Foundations’ grants team, in an informal half hour one to one session that is tailored to meet your needs.

Sessions can cover discussion of your projects and funding needs and which of the grant streams administered by the Foundation is suited to your group’s requirements. We can also help with developing Foundation applications you are currently working on and providing hints and tips for applying for funding in general.

The High Peak surgery will be held on High Peak – Volunteer Centre, Buxton on 29th March from 10am - 3.30pm.

Become Special

Derbyshire police are launching a campaign to recruit more Special

Constables across the county.

The Special Constabulary is a force of trained volunteers, who work alongside local Safer Neighbourhood team constables and PCSOs.

Specials play a crucial role in fighting crime and making the county safer. They have the same powers as police officers and are required to volunteer for a minimum of four hours a week.

Assistant Chief Constable Dee Collins said: “Special Constables often work in the area they are from so they know the issues faced by the community and they are aware of local troublemakers.”

For further details, contact 0300 330 1330, email [email protected] or visit www.derbyshire.police.uk

Tideswell Singers have outlined a lively and varied programme for 2011,

which begins with an evening concert on Wednesday 16 March at All Saints Church in Youlgrave. The singers will perform a wide ranging repertoire, including European sacred pieces, rousing songs from Macedonia and South Africa, and popular English numbers.

The concert will begin at 8pm and tickets will be £6. For further details please contact Carol Bowns on 01298 213577.

The programme for the rest of the year will include further performances as part of the Derbyshire Tour, and a concert on Sunday 11 September to mark the tenth anniversary of 9/11. Further details will be published shortly.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

Litton Mill student Rebecca Wylie is busy planning her next fund-raising event in

her bid to raise more than £2400. Her aim is to climb Kilimanjaro with a group from her university for the charity Childreach International.

She’s organised a South African wine tasting evening, with a set meal, at Vanilla Kitchen on 24 March.

Tickets costs £28.50 and can be obtained by contacting Rebecca on [email protected] or Tina 01298 872015 for tickets

Church Crèche

Those of us who have had small children and wanted to attend a church service

know that it isn’t always easy. Children are lively and noisy, and no-one wants to change that. But they are not likely to engage with a service of worship, and therefore can be a great distraction to their parents who are often over-sensitive to their activity.

A year ago the Parish Church started a crèche for under fives on the second and fourth Sunday of each month, during the 9.30am Sunday service. At a revent meeting, the families who use the crèche felt that others in the village might appreciate this, if they knew about it.

Therefore if you feel you would like to be in church, but are reluctant because of your young children, please be aware of this twice monthly provision.

You and your children will be welcome. If you would like any further information, contact Margaret on 871681. (The first Sunday of each month sees us all together for our Family Service.)

Community Care Award

Nominations are invited for the Annual Community Care Award. There are

two categories - under 18 and over 18. Nominations, in writing, to be sent to the Clerk of the Parish Council (Lesley Bramwell, Crookbank Farm, Lane Head, Tideswell, SK17 8RB or 01298 872000) by the 9th April 2011.

200+ Club February Draw

Here are the results. Congratulations to the winners

£25-----030: £20----029; £15----066;

£10---- 059; £5----135; £5----15

The March draw is the last in this season of the 200+ Club. The top prize will be £50, well worth winning.

If you wish to join the 200+ club, with a chance to win money prizes every month, please contact Judy on 872408 or Dorothy on 871661 for more information. It costs £12 per year. All profits go back into the community. The TDCA has given grants to many projects and made a real difference. If your group has a project that needs some funding, please apply to the committee with details and we will see what we can do.

All members of 200+ Club are members of the Community Association. To become more involved in the community contact Dorothy or Judy for details. Help will be needed in the spring with the planting and distribution of the flower troughs which help make the village so colourful.

The Community Association is proud to have supported the production of the new information boards which should be erected very soon. Along with the boards two walks have been produced, one around the village, Tideswell’s Hidden Histories, and a longer stroll called The Litton Loop. Free copies of these are in the Infor-mation Points at the Library and Vanilla Kitchen and in many of the local shops. For those with MP3 players audio versions of these two walks can be downloaded from http://visittideswell.co.uk.

Breakfast Club Success

Flagg Nursery School celebrated National Breakfast Week in style by

offering free breakfast club sessions to all our children, and by baking healthy fruit loaves and mixing fresh fruit smoothies. The children at Flagg were able to appreciate the importance of a nutritional breakfast in a fun and tasty manner. This is just one of the many ways that children learn through play and enjoyment during their time at Flagg Nursery School, and why we are so proud of our rating of Outstanding by Ofsted.

For more information on Flagg Nursery School and our extended services, please either visit our website: www.flagg.derbyshire.sch.uk give us a call on 01298 85208, or drop us an email to [email protected]

On the Beat

Across Derbyshire, crime is on target to fall for the seventh year in a row.

Whilst this is excellent news the current economic climate may result in a rise in crime levels in our area. There has been a spate of several burglaries in Matlock, Darley Dale and Wirksworth as well as theft of diesel.

There have been several reports of thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles. The thieves are likely to be recycling the precious metals. The vehicles have been parked both on public roads and private drives. Please be vigilant and to report any suspicious incidents immediately.

As a result of the successful “Operation Illuminate” we have a limited stock of home security devices including dusk to dawn lighting, shed alarms and door chimes which are available at a subsidised price. The products are available from Bakewell and Bradwell Police stations.

During December and January 2011 there has been an incident at Longnor where a sheep was butchered in a field. On the outskirts of Tideswell twelve sheep have been stolen and eighty seven sheep have been stolen from Carlton Pastures at Chatsworth. The farming community is on full alert and I would request that you support them by reporting any suspicious trailer or van that is parked in the vicinity of any fields with sheep in. Please take a moment to record a registered number, location and direction of travel of a suspect vehicle accurately.

Scam EmailsWatch out for scam emails, letters purporting to be from various agencies or that intrusive phone call asking for you personal bank or credit card details. Banks will not ask for your account details! DVLA will not ask for your driving licence details, they already know them.

There is very little that is free in this world and e-mail/letter scams asking you to send money for prizes are likely to involve a premium rate telephone number. This could cost you a substantial amount of money, remember if it sounds to good to be true it is more than likely a scam.

Neighbourhood Watch schemes are always looking out for new members to join, you will receive regular updates on crime trends and incidents that occur in your neighbourhood.

In response to the comment from a number of Villagers from Litton and the “You said, we did” ethos, residents will be aware that PCSO Phil Briggs is trying to start a Community Speed Watch in the village. This project is driven by community participation and if there are no volunteers, then it won’t happen. Volunteers will monitor the speed of vehicles being driven through the village in the company of PCSO Briggs. It only takes a couple of hours a week

to make a difference in your community. The criteria for carrying out speed checks are that it must be a suitable road i.e. maximum posted speed limit of 40 MPH and the location is safe for everyone to stand.

Anyone interested in community speed please contact PCSO Phil Briggs on 0345 123 33 33 or e-mail him on Phillip.Briggs.4543.derbyshire.pnn.police.uk

Lark Rise to Candleford

Goodbye Laura. And don’t forget to write!

On Thursday 17th March New Perspectives Theatre Company visit Tideswell with their latest production: a new adaptation of this classic story, performed in St John the Baptist Church. With a small cast, the play goes back to the original book by Flora Thompson. It will be a familiar friend to those that have enjoyed the TV series, but you’ll also certainly love it if you didn’t follow the TV version.

When young Laura Timms sets out from the tiny village of Lark Rise to start a new life in the nearby market town of Candleford she finds herself torn between her love of the countryside and the lure of the town, the traditions of the past and the promise of the future.

Critically-acclaimed New Perspectives Theatre Company presents a captivating new adaptation of this classic portrait of growing up in rural Oxfordshire in the twilight years of the 19th century featuring drama, storytelling and live folk music.

New Perspectives have visited Tideswell many times - chances are you’ll have seen them before or heard good things from someone who has. They are consistently getting top reviews in the national and regional press. Come and see their latest production in the magnificent setting of Tideswell’s Parish Church.

Brought to Tideswell through Live and Local the Arts Council and local authority supported scheme to bring great entertainment to villages. More information about the play and other productions at www.newperspectives.co.uk. 7:30pm Thursday 17th March.

Tickets £9.00 and £7.00 (concessions).

Bookings on [email protected] or on 01298 871063. Tickets on sale at Tideswell Post Office and Litton Stores. Follow Tideswell Theatre on Facebook and Twitter.

Moving OnTideswell Community Players say their last farewells to the URC Hall on Saturday 5th March when they have their final clear-out of stage equipment, pending any sale. They’ll be putting into store anything good enough to transfer to the Fountain Square Hall in due course, to help set it up as a fantastic venue for local and visiting theatre and music. They are selling stage curtains and stage flats and some other equipment to other nearby groups including Buxton Drama League and lending the comfy chairs to Tideswell Male Voice Choir. Inevitably and sadly some stuff will be scrapped, so come along to see if there’s anything you might want.

TCP are very sad to be leaving the Hall - they’ve been there over 40 years - but also very excited at the prospect of using a new venue when available and have already made comments on what would help it be attractive for live performance. That doesn’t mean there’ll be no shows coming up, but the opportunity to use different local venues will be fully explored, leading to yet more exciting shows for the village.

LootTCP’s spring play is likely to be Loot by Joe Orton. Directed by Tim Dudley, this very black comedy about a bank robbery and a funeral is likely to be performed upstairs at The George Hotel.

Make contact if you’d like to be involved in any way - [email protected] or 871063. Follow Tideswell Theatre on Facebook and Twitter.

Marx, Mac and a turnip

What has Karl Marx, Fleetwood Mac and a turnip got in common?

The answer is that they have all some connection with Castleton Hall (now the Youth Hostel). Alistair Boyd who has now been the warden at the YHA for 25 years gave Tideswell Local History Club a very illuminating talk on the subject on 10th February. There has been a building on the site ever since the early days of the castle but the first actual record is of Richard Ashton who was paying tax on four hearths in 1670. A wise man - he had been playing on both sides in the recent civil war.

In the 1700s Anne Potts the heiress of Castleton Hall married Sir Archibald Grant, a wheeler-dealer of dubious repute who had connections up in Aberdeen. He had been caught up in the South Sea bubble and had borrowed and lent money against assets he didn’t have (sound familiar?). He and his cronies spent roughly £715,000 out of £750,000 of other people’s money - which would equate to hundreds of millions of pounds today. Eventually it all caught up with him; he went bankrupt and spent two years in Fleet prison (so not 130 years of clink like Bernie Madoff!)

He did eventually redeem himself because he had connections with the agricultural pioneers Turnip Townsend and Jethro Tull and was responsible for staving off much hardship and starvation by introducing the humble turnip to Scotland.

Castleton Hall is a big rambling building and Eileen Sellars the daughter of a previous owner spoke of a deep tunnel going down from near the front door.

The prices paid when the hall was sold are

intriguing: in 1903 Edward Hall paid £1200, in 1919 John Sellars paid £1620 and in 1943 the YHA paid £2600. Nowadays the selling price would have to be in the region of one million pounds. The YHA was only started up in the 1930s but such was the demand that hostels quickly opened up all over the place. Castleton YH, to meet this demand, was obliged to buy up the Old Vicarage next door. Remarkably, this modest building has played a major part in world history for it was here that Friedrich Engels translated the earth-shattering Das Kapital.

There had been a succession of wardens until Alistair took over. One of them who is now a well-liked figure in the Tideswell area had previously been a road manager for Fleetwood Mac - ah such temptation for one so young!

Our next meeting will be on 10 March when Keith and Shirley Thomas will be presenting their excellent Discovering Derbyshire collection. Everyone is welcome as ever.

Dear Editor

Two more letters regarding Co-op’s decision to sell newspapers. First an open letter to

the CEO of the Co-op, the second from Philip at the Post Office.

Dear Peter

I am a strong supporter of your company’s ethical principles - and really welcome the fact that you have a thriving store in Tideswell, Derbyshire. Long may that continue.

However, I want to express my deep concern about your recent decision to sell newspapers there. Our local village post office based in Tideswell Stores, is very precious to us and you have set up in direct competition with them with newspaper sales. If their newspaper trade is cannabalised as a result of your decision, then they are at risk of closure - which, frankly, would do your Tideswell store no good. The Post Office is a major draw for people across a wide geographic area - and whilst here, they put a lot of money into the tills at the Co-op. If our post office closed, it would mean that these people would travel elsewhere for their post office and grocery needs. And neither of us want that.

So, please could you review your decision to sell newspapers? This would demonstrate your ethical principles and support for rural communities, plus the residents of Tideswell and district would be very grateful.

I look forward to receiving your response.

Best wishes, Carrie WarrConcerned resident of Tideswell,

I would like to express my sincere thanks to those who have taken the trouble to express their concern and solidarity over Tideswell Co-op’s decision to sell newspapers. All Tideswell Stores’ staff are extremely grateful for that support, and pleased to know that our efforts are appreciated.

Tideswell is extremely fortunate to have the range and quality of retail outlets that it currently has, and it is important to maintain support so that those shops are able to continue through the current economic difficulties. I’m told that over 30 small businesses have disappeared from Tideswell in the last 40 years. Those businesses, ranging from carpet shops to opticians, provided not only valuable services, but employment as well.

Clearly, the Co-operative group would like to be seen in a more favourable light compared to the likes of Asda and Tesco, more as a part of the community. We should remember however, that with the recent merger with Somerfield, the Co-op is the countries fifth largest supermarket group and despite their so-called social and environmental sustainability plan, they are happy to take trade away from any other business in the community, when additional profit is to be made. The Co-op can look after itself, but we all need to look after the small village shops. I would urge everyone to shop more at the small shops of Tideswell, you know that the quality and service are good, and compared to the Co-op, I think you’ll find that prices are surprisingly competitive.

At t’Flicks

Tideswell Cinema’s penultimate film this season is “An Education”,

nominated for three Oscars in 2010, and starring Carey Mulligan, Peter Saargaard and Alfred Molina. With screenplay by Nick Hornby, it is taken from the memoirs of Lynn Barber, and tells how, as a sixteen year old, she fell victim to a sociopathic charmer nearly twice her age. In the film Lynn becomes Jenny, a bright and pretty young girl who is earnestly cramming for her Oxbridge exams - but also longing for some real experience. David not only charms Jenny, but also dazzles her parents.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian describes it as “a sad, painful comedy, and the lovely performance of Mulligan makes it a very enjoyable film”. It will be shown at 7.30pm at The George on Thursday 24 March, and Guest Members are welcome, for £4.50. April 28 sees the last film of the 2010/11 season. The next programme of films will be available in August, with the season beginning on the fourth Thursday in September. Details, as always, will be announced in Village Voice.

Dear Tideswell Recyclers

Yet again the good folk of Tideswell and area turned out in force over

Christmas and New Year to use the village recycling site by school and the sports complex. How do I know? Well unfortunately I saw the evidence for myself when the children returned to school. The area around the recycling facilities was literally knee deep in bin bags containing bottles (glass and plastic) and cans. Not only is this unsightly but it is also dangerous.

The glass was removed after someone called the contractors and the cans were removed two days later but the rubbish left behind was appalling. What did I do? Well I went round and cleaned it up. The result was eight bin bags full of rubbish. The area looked clean and tidy and I felt it was time well spent instead of just moaning. The very next day three sacs of shredded paper and two carriers of cans had been dumped despite the recycling bins being almost empty!

I decided to finally find out who actually has responsibility for the recycling area as I have heard so many different stories. The responsibility lies with Derbyshire Dales District Council and they should be the first contact if there is a problem with full bins or rubbish. The number for the environment hotline is 01629 761215.

Taking items to the site and leaving them on the ground can be considered fly tipping and you can be fined for this. Please note there is no cardboard recycling at the site and it should not be taken there. We are lucky in Tideswell as we are very close to the fantastic recycling site at Water Swallows for large items or large quantities of waste so if you have lots to recycle take it there. If anyone phones up to say that the site is a mess DDDC can send someone to clean up but it is our council tax that pays for it so by leaving the site a mess you are costing us all money.

A final plea; please take you bags home if the container is full and always take your empty bags away. Please continue to recycle but please be considerate too.

Of Shops and Competition

Like numerous other Tideswell residents, I try to support our local businesses.

Hopefully, especially in the present economic climate, they are also supporting each other.

Our community is fortunate in having a number of specialist trades people. For their living they rely on offering a limited range of quality products. Overheads are increasing as suppliers up their costs, the direct consequence being unavoidable price rises to customers

It is not helpful to people such as our local greengrocer, butcher, milkman and caterers when other local shops begin to stock cut-price items resembling supermarket ‘loss leaders’ or add more cheaply produced items outside their normal range, which could threaten the livelihood of their more specialist neighbours.

Competition is a good thing if it encourages attention to quality and variety for customers in Tideswell, but competition should be fair. Many will remember when there were duplicates of

specialist privately owned shops thriving in our community, however that was before the rise of the supermarket chains, cut price stores, out of town supermarkets and internet shopping. Surely these are enough of a threat without our local businesses threatening each other; all be it unwittingly.

Bowl’d OverWelcome everybody yet again if you read

Bowl’d Over last time, if you’re a new reader relax with a beverage of your choice; the more beverages the betterer, or worserer this gets. Some apologies to make; first about over emphasising the reference to sex drugs and rock ’n’ roll because, after all, we do bowling. So dear readers you have to sort out these other activities for yourselves, but and this is a big but, please not on the green in daylight when Dedicated Dave is mowing. What you choose to do under cover of darkness is your choice. I’m making an important point here, so put the beverage down and pay attention to the efforts of Terry Shaw for rebuilding the mower (saved us £5k for a new one). The last thing that both he and DD want in the mower is shredded knickers please. Not much about bowling yet, but I’m getting there via the scenic route because I have also to apologise for the spelling mistakes and gross grammatical blunders, you hawk eyes got three, wrong, there were five plus an information error – the social afternoon is Wednesday not Tuesday.

Carpet bombing update for 8/2 very interesting cos we hijacked the Knit and Natter club so that Jaq T could do deep research to get the elegant and fragrant Giesla with the dapper Leo to come carpet bombing at the George on Tuesdays (none ‘til 8/3).

At last, now to the bowling on 1/2; we played Bamford at Bishop Pursglove school (another advert because it’s an excellent venue marvellously decorated with edifying and amusing pupils’ work) and won eventually, avoiding, for a change, the sick bucket!. However, there must be a mention in despatches to the three bedazzling bowlers for winning 16 – 0, yes 16 - 0, Elaine Chapman (who wears very interesting home knitwear, big flock of sheep Elaine?), Andrew Turner (the man who has friends and relatives on planets yet to be discovered) Robin Hood (this is John Hallows

who does archery) but also encouragingly organises us. In the last edition I said that I’d willingly accept folding drinking vouchers to either include or exclude names from this column, however after what Andrew said I’m happily prepared to avoid having my limbs broken as well. We also enjoyed the tea, coffee and biscuits organised by Purveyor* Pat and her team.

Woe, woe and thrice woe for on Friday18/2 we went a bowling to Ashford where we had Christmas déjà vu feelings because, like turkeys, we were stuffed and trussed but, fortunately, not mounted … phew! The score was 35 – 73. Many alleged bowlers wandering around scratching heads wondering where it all went wrong.

What is happening next on the indoor bowling front? On 22/2 we go to Darley Dale to avoid a thrashing I hope. There are club nights at school on 25/2, 4/3, 11/31, 8/3 and the last one on 25/3 if you’d like to come along.

There’s Carpet Bombing at the George from about 6.30 ish on 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of March.

The green opens on Saturday March 26th, oh rapturous joy! The first match is home to Burbage A on the 12th April (see fixtures at http://www.stockportbowls.co.uk/z_buxton_fixtures.html ).

The Pub bowls AGM is on 31/3/11 at the Anglers Rest at 7.30pm. The first match is on May 4 between The Anglers and The George.

Griff.Message for club members; the inimitable Andrew and I are compiling an e-mail Tidza Bowls distribution list which, if you aren’t already, we would like you to be on. We appreciate that not everyone is on e-mail so we’ll be finding other ways to communicate. Contact either of us at [email protected] or [email protected].
