Dear members and friends,Just recently I met someone who has experienced a personal tragedy and is overwhelmed by pain and a sense of loss. She said it is hard to maintain a reason to go on living. After listening to her story and sharing

for just a few moments the burden of her pain, I thought of a profound lesson from my recent trip to India...

We all have different reasons for travelling, but for me there is only really one reason to travel to India – to gain insights, develop compassion and tolerance, and evolve! It is possible for this to happen at home, but stepping outside the everyday routine of homelife accelerates the process. And when we’re away, on a pilgrimage, or a healing journey, there is a clear intention to evolve and deepen our understanding of the life experience, to be at peace, or to be well.

For me, the Himalayas and the people of the Himalayas are great teachers. The mountains are a wonder of nature...beautiful, soaring, arid, snow covered peaks seen at icy dawn from the misty hills of Sikkim...and the local people naturally embody the qualities of the mountains. The Sikkimese are serene, peaceful, patient, joyful and expansive (there is a 0% crime rate in Sikkim!). Just being in the mountains and a part of that world for a short while reminds me of who I am, who I want to be, and what is truly important in life.

Sikkim is an independent Indian state in the eastern Himalaya, and is home to ancient Buddhist monasteries including Pemyagentse Monastery located on a serene and breezy hilltop with a panorama of Mount Kanchenjunga and the Himalayan peaks. We visited Pemyagentse and were greeted warmly by the main Lama who kindly gave an impromptu talk on the history of Tibetan Buddhism, and pointed out that the invasion of Tibet and annihilation of Tibetan culture and spirituality by the Chinese was foreseen by a wise Lama many centuries before who advised the people to shift Buddhism to Sikkim. This happened on a small scale and the monasteries established in Sikkim at that time have been preserved.

We asked the Lama how he personally feels about Tibet. He replied that for a long time he was deeply sad, displaced, and unable to ‘digest’ the situation, but in recent years he has found peace because he has now ‘fully digested’ what happened to him and his fellow refugees. This only happened after he shifted his focus from his own pain and cultural identity, to the pain and point of view of the perpetrators and the world at large. By doing this as a spiritual practice he was able to internally heal, and eventually feel compassion for the invaders and accept or ‘digest’ the suffering without pushing it away.

The Lama went on to say that some suffering in life is inevitable, but by developing inner skills and insight we can transform pain into compassion, love and be at peace with ourselves and the world around us – even in the midst of difficulty or tragedy. Just as the invasion of Tibet was foreseen, with insight we can look into our own future, take some steps to direct our lives in a positive and beneficial direction, and prepare ourselves emotionally and spiritually for whatever is to come.

I hope this issue of Wellness inspires you to embark on a journey – perhaps an inner journey of insight and healing, or an external journey to a place which brings you peace and understanding. ✦

Joy and peace to you,~ Mandy

Dr. Ralph Moss has written the book, Questioning Chemotherapy, which documents the ineffectiveness of chemotherapy in treating most cancers. On November 19, 1977, he was fired for telling the public the truth. At a press conference on November 18th, he and the Second Opinion working group released a well-documented 48-page report that stated the top officials of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center had lied about the results of a study performed at the center regarding “Laetrile” – (a natural, alternative cancer treatment).

Dr. Moss has gained credibility by writing eight books, including his most recent work, Cancer Therapy: The Independent Consumer’s Guide to Non-Toxic Treatment. He also wrote The Cancer Industry, a documented research work telling of the enormous financial and political corruption in the “cancer establishment”. He indicates that the motivating forces in cancer research and treatment are often power and money, and not the cure of cancer patients. He also writes, The Cancer Chronicles, a newsletter reporting on new cancer treatments and preventive measures.

Dr. Moss’ work documents the ineffectiveness of chemotherapy on most forms of cancer. However, he is fair in pointing out that there are the following exceptions: Acute Iymphocytic leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, and nonseminomatous testicular cancer. Also, a few very rare forms of cancer, including choriocarcinoma, Wilm’s tumor, and retinoblastoma. But all of these account for only 2% to 4% of all cancers occurring in the United States. This leaves some 96% to 98% of other cancers, in which chemotherapy doesn’t eliminate the disease. The vast majority of cancers, such as breast, colon, and

lung cancer are barely touched by chemotherapy. However, there is another category where chemotherapy has a relatively minor effect – the most “successful” of these is in Stage 3 ovarian cancer, where chemotherapy appears to extend life by perhaps eighteen months, and small-cell lung cancer in which chemotherapy might offer six more months.

Effective cancer treatment is a matter of definition. The FDA defines an “effective” drug as one which achieves a 50% or more reduction in tumor size for 28 days. In the vast majority of cases there is absolutely no correlation between shrinking tumors for 28 days and the cure of the cancer or extension of life.

When the cancer patient hears the doctor say “effective,” he or she thinks, and logically so, that “effective” means it cures cancer. But all it means is temporary tumor shrinkage.

Chemotherapy usually doesn’t cure cancer or extend life, and it really does not improve the quality of the life either. Doctors frequently make this claim though. There are thousands of studies that were reviewed by Dr. Moss as part of the research for his book – and there is not one single good study documenting this claim.

What patients consider “good quality of life” seems to differ from what the doctors consider. To most it is just common sense that a drug that makes you throw up, lose your hair and wrecks your immune system is not improving your quality of life. One longer-term effect is particularly tragic: people who’ve had chemotherapy may not respond to nutritional or immunologically-based approaches to their cancers and may have lost their chance of finding another sort of cure.

Dr. Moss’ position on chemotherapy is supported by many major students of the study of cancer treatment. Following are some examples: Dr. John Bailar is the chief of epidemiology at McGill University in Montreal and was formerly the editor of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. In 1986 the New England Journal of Medicine published an article by Dr. Bailer and Dr. Elaine Smith, a colleague from the University of Iowa. Bailer and Smith wrote: “Some 35 years of intense and growing efforts to improve the treatment of cancer have not had much overall effect on the most fundamental measure of clinical outcome – death. The effort to control cancer has failed so far to obtain its objectives.

Dr. John Cairns, a professor of microbiology at Harvard, published his view in Scientific American in 1985, “that basically the war on cancer was a failure and that chemotherapy was not getting very far with the vast majority of cancers.”

As far back as 1975, Nobel Laureate James Watson of DNA fame was quoted in the New York Times saying that the American public had been “sold a nasty bill of goods about cancer.”

In 1991, Dr. Albert Braverman, Professor of Hematology and Oncology at the State University of New York, Brooklyn, published an article in Lancet titled “Medical Oncology in the 1990s,” in

which he wrote: “The time has come to cut back on the clinical investigation of new chemotherapeutic regimens for cancer and to cast a critical eye on the way chemotherapeutic treatment is now being administered.”

Dr. Braverman says that there is no solid tumor incurable in 1976 that is curable today. Dr. Moss confirms this and claims that the greatest breakthrough in the objective study of chemotherapy came from a biostatistician at the University of Heidelberg, Dr. Ulrich Abel. His critique focused on whether chemotherapy effectively prolonged survival in advanced epithelial cancer. His answer was that it is not effective. He summarized and extended his findings and concluded that chemotherapy overall is ineffective. A recent search turned up exactly zero reviews of his work in American journals, even though it was published in 1990. The belief is that this is not because his work was unimportant – but because it’s irrefutable.

With the extensive documentation in Dr. Moss’ book, and all the statistics developed by the experts, why is chemotherapy still pushed by the large majority of oncologists? Dr. Moss feels that “there’s a tremendous conflict going on in the minds of honest, sensitive, caring oncologists.” They’re in a very difficult position because they’ve been trained to give these drugs. And they’ve devoted many years to reaching a very high level of expertise in the knowledge of poisonous, deadly compounds. They’re really in a bind, because they went into oncology to help the cancer patient, yet the tools they’ve been given don’t work. And they see what happens to physicians who “step out of line” and treat cancer with alternative means.

Armed raids, loss of licensure, professional smearing and ostracism are some of the consequences. These could all be related to the quotation in the book made by Dr. Lundberg, editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association. At a recent National Institute of Health meeting, he said of chemotherapy: “[It’s] a marvelous opportunity for rampant deceit. So much money is there to be made that ethical principles can be overrun sometimes in a stampede to get at physicians and prescribers.” You never heard that on the evening news.

The economics of cancer treatment are astounding. Cancer treatment is close to $100 billion annually ($100,000,000,000). Looking from

another angle: the Bristol Myers company owns patents on twelve of the nearly forty “FDA-approved” chemotherapeutic drugs. The president, past president, chairman of the board, and a couple of the directors of Bristol Myers all hold positions on the board at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Moss’ book details the failures (and very few successes) for chemotherapy with more than fifty types of cancer, includes a complete description of the major chemotherapy drugs, and has a section about questions to ask your doctor. All of Dr. Moss’ books and Cancer Chronicles newsletters are available from Equinox Press and his website www.cancerdecisions.com. [CSA also holds the complete Moss Reports in closed reserve - ed].

We are obviously losing ground with conventional cancer treatment, because the death rates keep going up. The reason for this is because conventional treatment is based on a faulty standard: That the body must be purged of cancer by aggressive and toxic methods such as surgery chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This, of course, seemed reasonable back in 1894 when William Halsted, M.D. did the first radical mastectomy, but it has proven to be so wrong over the last 50 years that continuing to adhere to it constitutes more fraud than honest mistake. However, this standard still dominates conventional cancer therapy, and until that changes, we will continue to lose ground with cancer.

Dr. Whitaker, a firm believer in Dr. Moss’ work and alternative cancer therapy goes on to give some of his personal views:

Statistics Don’t Tell the Real Story What is lost in the unemotional statistic of 500,000 cancer deaths per year is how those people died. Dr. Whitaker goes on to say more about the treatment of cancer: In my opinion, conventional cancer therapy is so toxic and dehumanizing that I fear it far more than I fear death from cancer. We know that conventional therapy doesn’t work – if it did, you would not fear cancer any more than you fear pneumonia. It is the utter lack of certainty as to the outcome of conventional treatment that virtually screams for more freedom of choice in the area of cancer therapy. Yet most so-called alternative therapies regardless of potential or proven benefit, are outlawed, which forces patients to submit to the failures that we know don’t work, because there’s no other choice.

Magazine of the Cancer Support Association of WA March 2008

Page 7WELLNESSWELLNESSWELLNESSWELLNESS Magazine

Personal Belief Systems Determine the Choices You Make Because cancer treatment is such a sensitive issue, I need to set some ground rules before I tell you what I would do if I had cancer. What follows is what I personally would do. It is not a recommendation for you, and should not be considered as such. It is not even what my wife would do (that would be her decision), nor is it what my young son would do (that would be the joint decision of my wife and myself). The choices to be made in treating cancer are not easy ones, because there is so little certainty of cure in any of them. The course that someone chooses to take is very personal, and reflects not only that person’s knowledge of the options, but also his/her beliefs.

Yet, because we are strongly influenced by our natural fear of death, we lineup for conventional cancer therapy, not so much believing that it will work, but hoping that it will not fail. If expensive, debilitating procedures to eliminate acne scars had the same failure rate as cancer treatment, they would be abandoned. It is only because cancer is so often fatal that conventional approaches were not abandoned long ago. We continue to use them not because they work, but because those who perform them have so vigorously eliminated any other choice...

Though I would approach my own dilemma with hopes of total cure, I would be the first to admit that, regardless of the course I took, the chances of that are not high. Consequently, my choices of cancer therapy are a mix of science and philosophy. They are as much a reflection of how I would fight for survival as of how I would wish to die if the struggle failed. For the purposes of this discussion, let us assume that I have just been diagnosed with cancer of the lung, and a particularly virulent one. (Please understand that I do not have cancer, nor do I smoke.) Before going into what I would do and why, let me say what I wouldn’t do, and why...

I Wouldn’t Take A Passive Role If I am going to fight for my life, I want to do just that. I am always perplexed by the news stories of some celebrity, doped to the gills with heinous poison, “courageously battling for his life.” What does this mean? The celebrity, who simply accepts conventional cancer therapy, is no more “courageous” than a laboratory mouse. This is not to say that what the celebrity is doing is wrong, only that it is the very opposite of a willful act of courage.

Taking a passive role with today’s conventional therapy is terribly dangerous. Recently Jackie Kennedy, after a “courageous fight,” succumbed to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma – or did she? Her early demise, attributed to the cancer, was a shock to cancer specialists worldwide, and brought into question the real cause of her death. She had been given an unproved protocol of very high-dose chemotherapy. The drugs alone could easily have caused her death – and this would not be unusual. There are numerous cases of iatrogenic (doctor-induced) deaths from chemotherapy.

MY Imaginary CANCER Scenario (by Dr. Whitaker)

I’d Actively Fight For My Life On the other hand, the cancer patient who says, “no, thanks” to chemotherapy recommended by large cancer treatment centers, and takes off to Grand Bahamas Island to receive Immuno-Augmentative Therapy (IAT); or to Houston, Texas, to receive antineoplastons from Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski; or who heads to the public library to make a battle plan, has begun fighting and is acting courageously.

Whether I win or lose, that is the course I would take. What have I got to lose? Conventional treatment is toxic and simply doesn’t work, so I would throw my lot with something safe that might work, and folks, a lot of approaches fit that description. I also believe patients who seek alternative therapies are more optimistic. They have only one worry – the cancer- not the cancer and the therapy!

Here’s What I Would Do I’d turn my back on 50 years of institutionalized expertise, because it follows the wrong paradigm. Everything that is done in medicine or in any other discipline fits some paradigm. The paradigm I use for cancer is that it is a systemic problem in which the normal control mechanisms of your body are altered. Your immune system likely bears the largest burden for this control; thus, all techniques that enhance it are promising. Those that damage it are not.

Also, cancer cells are different from normal cells in many ways, including their metabolic profile. At least one non-toxic

therapy, hydrazine sulfate, takes advantage of this difference. It has been shown in double-blind trials published in respectable journals to significantly reduce the severe weight loss (cachexia) of advanced cancer, and markedly improve the patient’s emotional state, almost to the point of euphoria. It is also inexpensive. Even though hydrazine sulfate has been shown to be effective and non-toxic, and it makes the patient feel better, it is ignored by every major cancer center. Yet I would take it immediately. (For more on hydrazine sulfate, see Ralph Moss’ book, The Cancer Industry.)

First, I would Change My Diet I would switch to a mostly vegetarian diet. I’d also take the Nutritional Supplements “Green foods,” such as GREENS+ or Green Magma (from Healthy Directions). These supplements include the phyto-chemicals, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals required for optimal health [CSA Wellness Shop stocks similar items – ed]. I would enhance that basic program with the following:

Vitamin C 10,000 mg per day in divided doses. Ewan Cameron, a Scottish physician, did a study in which 100 cancer patients were given 10,000 mg of vitamin C for the rest of their lives, while control patients were not. The patients on vitamin C lived much longer than the age-matched controls. The Mayo Clinic did two studies on vitamin C, and in both studies found that vitamin C did not help. However, both studies were set up in a manner that almost guaranteed failure. Frankly, I think that this was done intentionally to generate negative publicity for this non-toxic approach.

Cartilage A three to four-month trial of bovine or shark cartilage. The mucopolysaccharides in cartilage stimulate the immune system and normalize malignant cells. Ninety percent of patients with a variety of cancers responded to a clinical trial of bovine cartilage; shark cartilage has demonstrated success rates of 25 to 50%. Bovine cartilage (suggested dose is 9 g a day) and Shark cartilage (suggested dose is 1 g per 3 pounds of body weight) can be obtained from Power Labs in Fremantle, WA .

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)Used as an effective therapy in congestive heart failure, CoQ10 has only recently been studied as a cancer treatment. Cancer patients

have been found to have deficiencies of CoQ10. Clinical trials in breast cancer have resulted in no further metastases, improved quality of life (no weight loss and less pain), and partial remission in six of 32 patients. Vitaline makes a chewable CoQ10 with vitamin E [CSA Wellness Shop stocks a similar item – ed]

Essiac Tea 2 ounces 3 times a day. This blend of four herbs -burdock root, sheep’s sorrel, slippery elm and Indian rhubarb root- has its genesis in Native American medicinal folklore. Since it was “discovered” by Canadian nurse Rene Caisse in the 1920s, thousands have claimed to have had their cancers cured by this tea. I’d keep on searching. We have the formula if you are interested in purchasing the individual herbs in bulk.

Finally, you should know that if I were battling cancer – or any serious disease, for that matter – I would be in a constant search for effective, non-toxic therapies. One place to begin that search is with Ralph Moss, Ph.D. He is probably the most knowledgeable writer in the world on alternative therapies for cancer, and has recently published a 530-page book, Cancer Therapy: The Independent Consumer’s Guide to Nontoxic Treatment and Prevention. (Equinox Press, New York, NY, 1995).

Another source of information is People Against Cancer, which provides a comprehensive counseling service called the Alternative Therapy Program. It includes a review of your medical records by a network of doctors using alternative therapies. People Against Cancer can be found at www.peopleagainstcancer.com.

This is certainly not my final say on cancer treatment, because it changes as new research is done. I want to say again that what I would do is not a recommendation for you. However, it is not a reasonable belief to think that conventional cancer experts offer the best approaches for most cancers. There is just too much evidence to the contrary. One of these days there may not be a need for ‘’alternative’ approaches to cancer. Until then, look for the answers to the cancer riddle in the growing field of alternatives, because they are obviously not present in our armamentarium of conventional therapies. ✦

Conversations and Meditation with Ajahn Brahm April 2nd at CSA:

Once again the CSA is very fortunate and grateful to welcome the Venerable Ajahn Brahm to give one of his inspirational, meaningful and humorous talks to our members, and friends.

When Ajahn Brahm was awarded the 2004 John Curtin Medal for his tireless work in our community to help alleviate the suff ering of people from all walks of life, the West Australian newspaper published the following about the Abbot of the Bodhinyana monastery in Serpentine:

“Charismatic abbot and spiritual director of the Buddhist Society of WA Ajahn Brahm, has dedicated his life to giving to others. When he arrived in Australia from Thailand more than 20 years ago the local Buddhist community comprised a handful of followers. Now it is the biggest multi-ethnic Buddhist society in Australia.

Curtin vice-chancellor Lance Twomey said Ajahn Brahm had a strong sense of compassion, understanding and humour which he used to help the wider community. His leadership is particularly evident in his counselling in prisons, hospitals, and schools.

Ajahn Brahm is also credited with one of the major achievements of modern Buddhist studies when he prepared a comprehensive guide to the Buddhist monastic code, the Viyana, from its original Pali texts. He has also had a book of stories published, which show moments of wisdom, and compassion in the lives of ordinary people.”

Travelling

There are many reasons why people opt to travel for treatment. In your quest to find the cancer therapy which is right for you, your journey may lead you to an alternative cancer clinic far from home. It might be that a particular therapy or specialist sounds just right, you may have exhausted your treatment options at home, or perhaps you just need to get away and try something completely different to help make deep and fundamental changes.

Wellness magazine features articles on cancer therapies in Australia and around the world. This month we look at the Paracelsus Klinik in Switzerland, the Las Mariposas Clinic in Spain, and CSA member Dayna Bell shares her experiences at Lase Med, Inc Therapy Place in the US.

The Paracelsus Klinik, founded in 1958, is situated in a beautiful part of North East Switzerland an hour away from Zurich. From the very beginning it has been a place where natural therapies are combined to form an holistic package to treat chronic disease. Over the years the clinic has developed considerably, particularly since Dr. Thomas Rau joined as Chief Medical Director 12 years ago. Dr. Rau has a background in orthodox rheumatology but after becoming disillusioned with conventional medical techniques he spent many years studying different forms of natural medicine. He has skilfully drawn together ideas and methods from these various disciplines to create his own form of Biological Medicine. When he feels it is appropriate Dr. Rau combines the Biological Medicine with certain orthodox practices, the result being a sophisticated, integrated medical model that has served to build a worldwide reputation for Dr. Rau and the Paracelsus Clinic.

OVERVIEW OF BIOLOGICAL MEDICINEThe basic philosophy is simple and clearly expressed by the name: bio-logic – the logic of nature. Biological Medicine recognises that the human being is a part of, and reacts like everything else in nature and it seeks to awaken the healing powers that lie within us all through the use of natural methods and remedies.

Biological Medicine has its roots in the German tradition of natural healing and is an expanded form of the naturopathic medicine commonly practised in Europe and the US. For its practitioners, a key area of focus is the internal milieu or biological terrain of their patients. In simple terms this is the extracellular fluid that cells are bathed in, a substance from which the cell draws all of its nutrients and to which cellular waste products are returned. The extracellular fluid also acts as a communications system between cells. Those practising Biological Medicine use many techniques, key ones being nutritional and detoxification therapies, to create a healthy environment for cells to flourish. If there is harmony at the level of the cell, the body’s smallest functional unit, there will be harmony throughout the tissues, the organs and the body as a whole.

Another important concept is that of the regulatory capacity of the body or its ability to maintain a steady internal environment. In health we are able to adapt our inner processes with great efficiency, disease on the other hand represents a reduction in our ability to regulate ourselves. Toxic build-up is regarded as the main block to our regulatory capacity.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE KLINIK?At the Paracelsus Klinik, where there are over eighty staff, Biological Medicine is practised in a comprehensive way with most disciplines of natural medicine utilised to cover all aspects of health. Members of staff include eight doctors plus nurses and

natural health practitioners. In addition the clinic boasts an holistic dental suite, which is home to five dentists.

The fact that there are almost as many dentists as doctors reflects the emphasis placed on the state of the teeth and gums and their impact on overall health. Detoxification has a large role to play in Biological Medicine, and at Paracelsus particular attention is given to mercury removal because of its recognised detrimental effect on health. This means that those arriving with amalgam fillings are advised to have them removed during their stay, a daunting prospect if you have a mouth full! The advantage however, is that dentists at the clinic use state-of -the-art equipment to ensure minimum Leakage of mercury into the body during the removal process. In addition powerful nutritional interventions mean that the any mercury that does leak (it cannot be avoided completely) is cleared from the system rapidly.

The high-tech facilities provide an ongoing theme throughout the clinic. Some of the most impressive equipment is that used for diagnostic purposes. As part of the Biological Medicine approach a person first arriving at Paracelsus, regardless of their particular health problem, will undergo a series of in-depth investigations. The intention is to learn as much as possible about the individual’s makeup, rather than focusing on symptoms or the diagnosis, in order to uncover the root causes of disease. Procedures include dark field microscopy (provides an analysis of live blood), electro-dermal screening (measures electrical resistance at the acupressure points providing information on the energetic nature of the body), thermography (a measure of the body’s temperature control), biological terrain analysis (assessment of the conditions of the internal milieu such as pH) plus many others. Conventional diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound and x-ray may also be used.

In my experience the fact that oncologists are unable to provide cancer patients with much insight regarding the causes of their disease can lead to stress as patients feel that their key healthcare provider actually has little understanding of the true nature of their illness. I imagined that at paracelsus, where the underlying factors of disease are scrutinised, patients would feel a sense of reassurance. This was verified many times as I spoke to cancer patients visiting the clinic.

CANCER TREATMENTSo apart from gaining greater understanding of the causes of their disease, what can patients expect to receive in the form of treatment? The Paracelsus Klinik is not a specialist cancer treatment centre and although the doctors are very experienced in treating this disease they are not specifically trained in oncology. In a way this matters little as this approach concentrates on addressing the underlying issues of cancer rather than focusing on the tumour which, after all, is just a symptom of a much larger process involving the whole body.

For all patients treatment entails many forms of detoxification – through the skin by way of saunas, by clearing the bowel using colonic irrigation and more unusual

techniques such as Matrix Regeneration Therapy (MRT), a special form of suction massage that helps to draw toxins from deep within the tissues. In treating cancer, a disease where the degree of degeneration is advanced, the cleansing process has to reach far into the body. But it does not stop there, for detoxification of the mind is just as important. At Paracelsus this is understood well and a skilled psychotherapist, a healer and a kinesiologist working with the emotions particularly, are on hand.

Alongside toxin removal, attention is given to the replenishment of any essential elements the body may be lacking. For vitamins and minerals this occurs by way of supplements but also infusions for the nutrients required in larger doses. Infusions are also given to boost the body’s oxygen levels as tissue deficiencies of this most vital of all elements is a problem in those with cancer To complete the treatment picture a number of techniques are employed with the specific aim of destroying the cancer cells. These include hyperthermia, a method of beating the body to temperatures reaching 40 degrees in an effort to kill heat-sensitive cancer cells and mistletoe injections.

VISITING THE PARACELSUS KLINIKAfter observing the treatment work that is carried out at the Paracelsus Klinik, from the patient perspective and as a therapist, the word that springs to mind to sum up the experience is ‘intense’. A packed schedule is handed to the patient on the day of arrival, and from then on for the rest of the stay (usually 3 weeks for a cancer patient) it is non-stop treatments, except at weekends. There are no facilities for staying at the clinic but buses run patients to and from nearby guesthouses. It is all highly organised but very exhausting for someone who is ill. One way that this situation could be improved would be if the centre had a few resting rooms with beds for brief naps between treatments.

The one area I felt the treatment was lacking concerned the dietary advice given. As a nutritionist I know just what a difference a good diet can make to those recovering from cancer. At the Paracelsus Klinik it is apparent that the staff also feel diet is very important but the time devoted to relaying this message to the patient is disappointing. My mother and the other patients I spoke to spent between half an hour and forty five minutes with a nutritionist during the three week stay and judging by the conversations in the guesthouse kitchens at night this was not nearly enough.

To finish on a positive note, Paracelsus, the outstanding physician the Middle Ages from whom the clinic takes its name, stated that “it is not the physician that heals but nature”. It is apparent that Dr. Rau and his team have found a way to work by this philosophy. Advanced medical knowledge and cutting edge techniques are applied in a manner that captures the true essence of healing and all of this takes place in an environment of total peace and tranquillity. The result is surely the clinic of the future. ✦

L.I.E.S.H. THERAPY PLACE, ARKANSASlase med, inc.

Decisions, decisions! Did you know that if you search alternative cancer therapies on the net you’ll get over 22 million sites! I’ve spent 15 months researching cancer and unorthodox treatments since I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2006. Sifting through the quagmire of cancer ‘cures’ can be both confusing and depressing.

I guess its not surprising when you consider there are more people ‘treating’ cancer than there are people with cancer. That tells you something of this world of greed and ruthless money spinners, all eager to prey on the desperation of cancer patients. I decided to restrict most of my attention to those recommended by other cancer patients. This is how I stumbled over the L.I.E.S.H. therapy in Arkansas in the United States. I found a lady in Broome who had just come back from treatment and had great success. She was in a similar condition to me with a fairly large tumour and infiltration to two lymph nodes. That surge of hope and positivity washed over me once again!

LIGHT INDUCED ENHANCED SELECTIVE HYPERTHERMIA (L.I.E.S.H)So what is it? The idea of destroying cancer with heat is certainly not new. I had been having local hyperthermia each week for nearly a year without great results so my initial reaction was one of doubt. The effect of hyperthermia on cancer is limited because they cannot achieve total necrosis, and unless the entire mass of neoplastic tissue is destroyed the cancer will continue to grow. It was finally concluded some time ago that in order to ensure destruction of the cancerous growth it is necessary to reach a temperature deadly to healthy cells as well. It is because L.I.E.S.H. is a localised treatment that it interested me.

As I researched L.I.E.S.H I realised it was a form of photo-dynamic therapy, very much improved on the original form, combined with

some of the principles utilised in radio-fractionated hyperthermia. It is a method of non-invasive de-bulking and destruction of tumours. Limited to breast and skin cancers at present, although it has successfully worked on other forms of cancer that are located less than 4 inches from the skin’s surface and don’t involve an interruption of bone, this innovative treatment is actually quite simple.

NON-INVASIVE LASER TREATMENTContrary to surgery, the treatment is non-invasive. The treatment was patented by Dr. Carpenter of Arkansas USA. The procedure relies on the use of a proprietary laser system of a wavelength not significantly absorbed by human tissue. It emits a low power broad beam which cannot produce damage on the tissue under normal conditions. It doesn’t burn or fry the tumour, which is what happens with radiation, but instead uses light to enter on an intra-cellular level causing the cells to be encased with a double coating of cytoplasm which ultimately heats and suffocates the cells.

This process alters the human tissue absorption characteristics only within the tumour growth. The malignant tissue absorbs the energy from the laser beam so the cells within the tumour mass reach a deadly temperature level and are subject to irreversible damage and die within 48 hours.

The treatment is FDA approved and virtually pain free. In my case, a local anaesthetic was administered prior to the treatment, then a direct injection into the tumour of a dye, known as ‘the enhancer’ because it enhances the cell’s sensitivity to the laser light, is done to highlight the tumour and enable easy location parameters for the doctor to perform the laser treatment. Dr. Carpenter uses a compound called OxyM which is water soluble and completely innocuous. I guess this was my greatest concern as I had discovered that biopsies can cause the cancer to spread, so the thought of having the tumour

injected rang alarm bells. I discussed this concern with Dr. Carpenter and she assured me that it is actually bleeding which causes spread and the needle she uses is too fine to cause bleeding.

I underwent one and a half hour daily treatments for six days which seems to be the average course of treatment for a fairly large tumour, so it wasn’t a long winded process. This was handy as Arkansas, a religious, dry county, doesn’t have much entertainment or interesting sites. In fact it’s so terribly boring that staying any longer than a week might drop you over the edge mentally!

WHY ARKANSAS?Dr. Carpenter chose Arkansas simply to stay clear of the unrelenting pessimists who in the orthodox cancer treatment world. She is an eccentric, colourful lady who throws you off guard if you’ve been used to the straight-faced white coats. A physicist by profession, she works under the licence of a medical doctor. Her facilities are professional yet warm and unpretentious. She investigated the procedure over twenty years ago and has been treating cancer successfully with this method at Lase Med Inc since 2000.

DOES IT WORK?I believe the treatment has worked! All cancer cells have been destroyed. I can still feel the tumour as it obviously hasn’t had time to lyse away. Results from an ultrasound at an independent clinic confirm there is no cancer activity, which relieves my concerns of it still being alive and active. Dr. Carpenter recommends taking enzymes, in particular serrapeptase, for three months after treatment to assist with the removal of toxins and dead tissue.

L.I.E.S.H. may not appeal to everyone and may not work for everyone, but with no negative side effects it is worth consideration. Even patients with a compromised immune system from previous treatments haven’t suffered from infection in the treated area. One of the reasons for this positive occurrence is attributed to the fact that the wavelength of the LASER light utilized in this therapy has been proven by NASA to induce healing naturally.

Nutritional and lifestyle changes must accompany this treatment, or any other for that matter, and you will need to adopt a new way of life. Without these changes the probability of reoccurrence is greatly enhanced. Consider for a moment, how you got the cancer in the first place. There appears to be no logical reason outside the realms of stress, diet and overall lifestyle. It makes sense to me to continue improving my way of thinking and working on personal change. As our good friend and fellow CSA member Geoff Barbour always says, “its all in the way you choose to take or approach things”...or something like that!

Be prepared for a long journey to Lase Med from Perth. It took me and my ever supportive husband Ken 38 hours travel time to get there; and even longer to get back with headwinds coming from the west. Even as a travel agent I couldn’t prevent the time lags! So if you’re going to make the trip, consider a stopover along the way. We spent a week in northern Thailand in Chiang Mai on the way home. This is a spot I would highly recommend for recuperation. Wow, what an incredibly pretty spot, and the caring, hospitable nature of the Thai people make the stay even more enjoyable. We dropped in to one of the many healing/treatment centres and spas in the area which was a real treat! But I’m glad it’s all over, what a great Christmas present! ✦

UNIQUE METHODS THAT INDUCE THE NATURAL REMISSION OF CANCER AND OTHER ILLNESSES

las mariposas clinic

Las Mariposas Clinic is located in an idyllic holiday destination in the south of Spain. Managed by the German Dr. Hei, the clinic is staffed by health care professionals who have researched anti-cancer therapies from Europe, Canada, the United States and Mexico. The cancer success rate at Las Mariposas Clinic is due to their unique five step holistic program which is outlined here.

1. HLB (HIGH RESOLUTION BLOOD) ANAYLSISLas Mariposas is one of the few clinics in the world at this time that uses HLB (High-Resolution Blood) analysis. By using a HLB microscope Las Mariposas can magnify a fresh and a dry blood sample up to 18,000 times its normal size, they then use the ‘darkfield diagnostic method’ developed by Dr. Günther Enderlein of Germany. Darkfield diagnostics is a relatively new approach, which enables the health care professional to see absolutely every thing your body is lacking in the way of minerals, vitamins, enzymes, essential fatty acids.

Dr. Joe Wallick, an American Veterinarian and Medical Doctor; who was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize, performed 17,500 autopsies on 454 species of animals and 3000 autopsies on human beings over a seven-(7) year period. He stated that every death by ‘natural cause’, was in fact due to a nutritional deficiency. He claims that we need no less than 60 trace minerals, 16 some essential vitamins and then 12 different amino acids and 3 fatty acids every day to ward off diseases and live as long as our bodies were intended.

Most modern diets do not provide this amount of supplements, as most of our fresh fruits and vegetables are grown in depleted soils. Part of the Mariposas program is to supply your body with exactly the right combination of minerals, herbs, homeopathic products, vitamins, amino acids and fatty acids that are needed. As it is the deficiency of these micronutrients that underlies the disease state many conditions including cancer can be successfully treated once accurate diagnosis of deficiencies has been made.

2. DETOXIFICATIONAfter an in depth and accurate diagnosis (something often lacking in the medical field) a complete detoxification is undertaken. Research and clinical studies show that to successfully treat cancer and any other serious illness you first need to ‘clean the body’. In the toxic world we now live in, our bodies are bombarded on a daily basis with hundreds of harmful chemical food additives (it is estimated that up to 7,000 chemical food additives have been approved for human consumption). In addition there are air, water and land pollutants, such as pesticides, herbicides, anesthetics, cigarette smoke (as well as second-hand smoke), aromatic hydrocarbons and so on.

Many studies have shown flaxseed oil, herbs and diets, MSM, vitamin B-17 as in apricot seeds, and a host of other chemical or

natural treatments will help in the fight against cancer, but their effectiveness is vastly reduced if the body is fouled up and not working at its optimum. This is one of the reasons why many anti-cancer therapies have only limited success, as they treat the symptoms and not the cause.

Las Mariposas clinic has developed a very effective 100% natural approach that gives a total body cleansing of the major organs such as the liver, gall bladder, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, as well as the circulatory system, intestines and lymph glands. The patient experiences a feeling of wellbeing once they have a fresh, clean body.

3. ELECTRO-ACUPUNCTURE & BIOENERGETIC MEDICINE (DR. VOLL)The term “bioenergy” is an approximate translation of the Chinese ´chi´, which is founded on a concept of vital energy controlling physical processes in the body. According to present standpoints in industrialized countries, bioenergetic medicine is a sub-area of quantum medicine, which in turn belongs to the field of non linear biophysics.

A leader in this field, Dr. Voll of Germany, claims that electromagnetic signals are transmitted along molecular chains of high molecular weight in the form of polarization waves. This process of propagation takes place in close conjunction with the Chinese acupuncture meridians as they have been known until now. Accumulated toxins and other harmful substances stored in tissues can interrupt these paths, resulting in blockades.

As a result of their electrical conductivity, the acupuncture meridians can be traced and studied by resistance and capacitance measurements. These points can then be stimulated by the application of DC or AC test current, by means of which the bioelectronic behaviour of the entire biological system can be tested and balanced.

Using this technique, Las Mariposas can assess the effects of the treatment for each individual patient – with especially effective results obtained in homeopathic potencies.

4. DIETARY MODIFICATIONS & FATTY ACID BALANCE (DR. BUDWIG)Good fats are important! In fact science has proven that fats play an important part in the functioning of the entire body. Each and every cell in our body is protectively covered with a sheath of fat. To function efficiently cells require polyunsaturated live electron-rich lipids. The first visible symptom of cancer is the separation of lipids (fats) from the surrounding tissue. Cancer grows in ‘bad’ fat cells. Saturated, hydrogenated, chemically hardened fats (as found

in margarine and refined cooking oils) actually act as chemical carcinogens within our bodies.

All cells throughout the human body are enveloped by a membrane composed mainly of essential fatty acids called phospholipids. Phospholipids play a major role in determining the integrity and fluidity of cell membranes. Essential fatty acids transport oxygen throughout the body. Every cell (blood tissue, organ) requires oxygen for functioning. When the membranes surrounding and protecting each cell are pumped full of oxygen, harmful bacteria cannot enter. Bacteria and viruses simply can’t grow in the presence of oxygen.

This explains why cancer patients often lack oxygen and they often turn literally yellow. Essential fatty acids are so important as both a preventive, by supplying a rich oxygen environment and also as treatment for any form of malignancy. Without the presence of these essential fatty acids killer diseases like cancer are given a very favourable environment.

As part of their program, Las Mariposas Clinic diagnoses the essential fatty acid levels of each patient and then treats it with the proper amount of essential oils and a corrective diet. Part of the therapies are based on the work of Dr. Johanna Budwig of Germany, who has personally endorsed the program at Las Mariposis.

While Dr. Budwig’s diet focuses mainly on flaxseed oil and cottage cheese to balance the fatty acids, Mariposas include other dietary strategies to successfully treat cancer, as there is not one approach or treatment that works for every cancer patient. The treatment is based on a number of variables, such as: what type of cancer one may have; what stage it is at; what treatment one has already received; and the results of the HLB diagnostic readings and the EAP readings.

5. TREATMENT OF THE WHOLE PERSONLas Mariposas does not treat the body separate from the mind and the heart, and no-one is ever just another patient. Each health care specialist on staff, from the medical doctor, the homeopathic professional, the anti-cancer diet counsellors and even the secretaries interact with guests in a warm and concerned manner. Dr. Dan C. Roehm M.D.

FACP (oncologist & former

cardiologist)

Do you think the cure for cancer is yet to be discovered? That’s what the pharmaceutical industry and the pink ribbon folks would like you to think. But this is far from the truth.

One of the least known well-documented cures for cancer was created by a German biochemist and physicist named Johanna Budwig in the 1950’s. Dr. Budwig was a leading authority on fats, oils and nutrition. She believed that cancer, as well as the vast majority of illnesses, was primarily caused by the improper processing of foods and oils, particularly the overheating or boiling of oils. Her patients were those so terminally ill that traditional medical practitioners had given up on them, with many having been given only days or hours to live. She treated these patients with a simple diet based on a combination of flaxseed oil and sulphurated protein.

While studying the blood samples of cancer patients and healthy persons, Dr. Budwig concluded that those with cancer had gross deficiencies of phosphatides and lipoproteins, while those without cancer did not. This deficiency resulted in a reduced oxygen level in the cells. It is well known that cancer cells can thrive only in an anaerobic environment. Her task was then to create a method by which cells could be re-oxygenated. Noting that saturated fats lacked the necessary pi-electron shells necessary to provide the high energy levels needed to effect oxygen transport, she discovered that unsaturated fats were the key in obtaining these pi-electrons. Flaxseed oil provides linoleic and linolenic fatty acids, both rich in high energy producing pi-electron. These fatty acids render the body able to assimilate and transfer immense amounts of oxygen into the cells, allowing for oxidation and detoxification of cellular waste. They also enable the restoration of the lipid membrane of cells so essential to intra and extra cellular balances.

Another significant aspect of Dr. Budwig’s work is her acknowledgement of the connection between the human body and the sun. She demonstrated that when the body is nourished with health giving oils and proteins, the pi-electrons serve as a resonance system for the sun’s energy.

As you can see, the Budwig diet is not really a method of curing cancer in and of itself. It simply helps correct an omega 3 deficiency that, when corrected, allows the body to heal itself. The benefits of this diet are not confined to those battling cancer, but extends to the healing of those with liver dysfunction, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, stomach ulcers, eczema, immune deficiencies, MS, IBS and other diseases. Its value as a preventative cannot be overstated.

There are thousands of documented cases of recovery from cancer with the Budwig diet. For her research and practice, Dr. Budwig was nominated for six Nobel Prizes. She was also subjected to endless vilification and harassment by the orthodox medical establishment, and the German pharmaceutical industry. Publication of her clinical studies and research papers was refused. However, her books are now widely available and can be purchased easily from amazon.com and other book sellers.

Ironically, in 2001 Duke University announced a new pilot study they were conducting that suggested that flaxseed oil and a low fat diet can help those with cancer.

The Budwig Diet consists of a flaxseed spread; and a mayonnaise made from flaxseed oil, low fat cottage cheese or yogurt with perhaps the addition of honey, fruit, garlic, cayenne, herbs, fresh squeezed fruit juice, ground flaxseeds, or a little water. One of these mixtures is taken 2 or 3 times daily. Meals consist of nutritionally dense whole foods.

Sugar is forbidden on the diet. This is because the cell takes up glucose (sugar) and gives off lactic acid which creates an acidic environment in the body. Cancer needs an acidic environment to flourish and cannot survive in an alkaline environment. Also forbidden are animal fats, all salad oils including commercial mayonnaise, meats containing chemicals and hormones, margarine, and anything containing preservative (preservative blocks the metabolism of flaxseed oil). Sweetening may be accomplished through the use of fruit juice or honey. Warm tea made of peppermint or rose hips is recommended. Black tea may be taken in the form of one cup per day.

The specifics of the complete Budwig diet may be easily researched online. For people wishing to fit the Budwig approach into today’s lifestyle, particularly as a preventative, it may be easily done by blending ¼ to ½ cup of low fat organic cottage cheese with 2 to 3 tablespoons of high quality flaxseed oil. Stir this mixture quickly until the oil and cheese are well blended and no pools of oil can be seen. Blending is accomplished when you can hold a spoonful upside down for a few moments and the mixture does not fall out. Eat it once or twice a day. Although this may sound unappetizing, it is really easy to get used to. Addition of cumin or dillweed with cayenne pepper makes is yummy. ✦

Barbara Minton is a school psychologist by trade, a published author in the area of personal fi nance, a breast cancer survivor using “alternative” treatments, a born existentialist, and a student of nature and all things natural.

If you would like to try the Budwig Diet then it is recommended you follow a dietary regime such as this one. Consult your naturopath for more personalised advise.• First thing in the morning, a glass of sauerkraut juice. • For breakfast, green tea and either a Budwig smoothie, or the Budwig Muesli. • Midmorning – freshly juiced vegetable juice (mainly carrot juice)• Before lunch: 2 tblsps ground flax stirred into a small glass of champagne • Salad with the Budwig Dressing/Mayonnaise OR steamed fresh veggies with

nutritional yeast flakes and Budwig’s OleoLux. Desert: a Budwig recipe with fresh fruits and the flaxseed/cottage cheese blend.

• Mid afternoon: 2 tblsps ground flax stirred into a glass of papaya juice. • Early evening: 2 tblsps ground flax stirred into a small glass of champagne • Soup from fresh veggies; serve with nutritional yeast and the OleoLux.

You can make some changes to the above regime if necessary such as: • replace champagne with papaya juice and flax.• add Essiac after the sauerkraut and before bed.• move the fresh juice to the afternoon to better reflect your work habits.

We’ve included the main Budwig recipes from the above regime here:

OleoLux 9 tblsps Flax Oil18 tblsps Coconut Oil, no chemicalshalf a medium onion10 cloves of garlic.

Heat the coconut oil, add chipped onion and garlic, and cook until lightly browned. Strain through sieve, and let cool slightly. Add to flax oil, and refrigerate.

Salad Dressing/Mayonnaise2 tblsps Flax Oil 4 tblsps organic, low fat cottage cheese 2 tblsps milk (preferably raw and/or unhomogenized) 2 tbsps of Lemon juice or Apple Cider Vinegar.

Blend together, and add: mustard, chopped (organic) pickles, spices and herbs to taste.

Muesli/Smoothie6 tblsps organic, low fat cottage cheese 3 tblsps flax oil 2 tblsps milk9 raw and/or unhomogenized) 1 tsp honey 2 tblsp ground flax seed Fresh fruit and berries to taste Blend in blender until no oil is visible.

You can make this into a smoothie by increasing the milk content.

Christine Robbins introduces Ajahn Brahm

Over the years it’s been delightful to listen to Ajahn Brahm speak, and to re-read his books “Opening the Door of your Heart; and Other Buddhist Tales of Happiness” (both available in the CSA library). His stories are thoughtful, funny and enlightening. Told with wit and wisdom, Ajahn Brahm’s stories expose moments of insight, wisdom and compassion and are immensely enjoyable.

His message appeals to people of all faiths as illustrated in this little piece titled WHAT’S IN A NAME?

“When one becomes a Buddhist monk in our tradition, one receives a new name. My monk’s name is “Brahmavamso , which being so long, I usually shorten to ‘Brahm’. Everyone calls me by that name now except for my Mum. She still calls me Peter, and I defend her right to do so. Once, during a phone call inviting me to an interfaith ceremony, I was asked to spell my name. I answered:

B – for BuddhistR – for Roman CatholicA – for AnglicanH – for HinduM – for Muslim

I received such a positive response that I usually spell my name that way now, and also give it that meaning.”

This simple message of inter-faith and embracing all is further exemplified in THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SOUND, another story from Ajahn Brahm’s book:

An uneducated old man was visiting a city for the first time in his life. He had grown up in a remote mountain village, worked hard raising his children, and now was enjoying his first visit to his children’s modern homes.

One day, while being shown around the city, the old man heard a sound that stung his ears. He had never heard such an awful noise in his quiet mountain village and he insisted on finding its cause. Following the grating sound back to its source, he came to a room in the back of a house where a small boy was practising on a violin.

“SCREECH! SCRAPE! Came the discordant notes from the groaning violin. When he was told by his son that it was called a ‘violin’, he decided he never wanted to hear such a horrible thing again.

The next day in a different part of the city, the old man heard a sound which seemed to caress his aged ears. He had never heard such an enchanting melody in his mountain valley, so he demanded to find its cause. Following the delightful sound back to its source, he came to a room in the front of a house where an old lady, a maestro, was performing a sonata on a violin.

At once, the old man realized his mistake. The terrible sound that he had heard the previous day was not the fault of the violin, nor even of the boy. It was just that the young man had yet to learn his instrument well.

With a wisdom reserved for the simple folk, the old man thought it was the same with religion. When we come across a religious enthusiast causing such strife with his beliefs, it is incorrect to blame the religion. It is just that the novice has yet to learn his religion well. When we come across a saint, a maestro of her religion, it is such a sweet encounter that it inspires us for many years, whatever their beliefs.

But that was not the end of the story.

The third day, in a different part of the city, the old man heard another sound that surpassed in its beauty and purity even that of the maestro on her violin. What do you think that sound was?

It was a sound more beautiful than the cascade of the mountain stream in spring, than the autumn wind through the forest groves, or than the mountain birds singing after a heavy rain. It was even more beautiful than the silence in the mountain hollows on a still winter’s night. What was that sound that moved the old man’s heart more powerfully than anything before?

It was a large orchestra playing a symphony.

The reason that it was, for the old man, the most beautiful sound in the world was, firstly, that every member of that orchestra was a maestro of their own instrument: and second that they had further learned how to play together in harmony.

“May it be the same with religion”, the old man thought. “Let each one of us learn through the lessons of life the soft heart of our beliefs. Let us each be a maestro of the love within our religion. Then, having learned our religion well, let us go further and learn how to play, like members of an orchestra, with other religions in harmony together!’

That would be the most beautiful sound.

For me this special story by Ajahn Brahm was further highlighted during the Dalai Lama’s visit to Perth last year. Questions from the audience were invited at the conclusion of his talk, and it was the reply he gave to a question about different faiths, which touched me with its simple yet profound message. He said that whichever faith or religious belief brings you to developing compassion, peace, joy, love and forgiveness, live that religion. Do not spend time trying to compare beliefs as being right, wrong, better, or best. Then the Dalai Lama gave one of his famous chuckles!

So, whichever stage you are at in mastering your chosen instrument, come along on the 2nd of April and experience an afternoon with this wise, compassionate and very entertaining man. ✦

HE WHO LAUGHS LASTS!

What affects the body more – our beliefs and thoughts, or the foods and drinks we consume? Without even acknowledging the debate, many people have nevertheless been stressed by it, trying to decide how to approach their own health and healing.

By Kal Sellers

At one extreme, there is a belief that it really does not matter what we eat or drink, only what we think and believe. This is mind-body medicine in the extreme. It has lots of evidence supporting it. Dr. Deepak Chopra, for example, writes abundantly on this subject, pointing out how thoughts and intentions can change physiology at the subatomic level. That this is possible certainly calls into question the value of diet at all, especially specific healing diets undertaken to control and correct many physiological and disease processes.

It also calls into question the value of nutrition and herbal medicine, since the real healing is said to happen fastest at the level of thought.

On this note, there is a personal experience I shall share. My wife had purchased some pH level testing tape and was testing her saliva to determine her acid/alkaline balance. She follows a good diet and for the most part, she was quite alkaline and really just did it for curiosity’s sake.

One day she approached me and handed me a piece of the tape and said, “Let me see what your pH is.”

I put the tape in my mouth and in a few seconds had the results of this test of my saliva (which, presumably, also indicates my blood pH). I was about neutral at that moment.

I asked her to come back and test me again in 45 seconds. During that time I did some positive self-talk, which included a sincere expression of gratitude for my Higher Power, the Earth, plants, animals and humans that had contributed to my life experience.

When she came back, she tested my saliva with the pH paper again and found that my saliva had moved four shades more alkaline on the pH testing chart, in 45 seconds!

Clearly, there is an immense amount of power in the mind and emotions to change the physiology spontaneously. This makes a pretty good argument for the mind-body position in healing and health.

The other side of the coin is body-mind healing. To open this discussion, I shall paraphrase a Dr. John R. Christopher story:

It seems that a woman (a registered nurse, in fact) came into his office one day and stormed up to his desk, slapped her hand loudly on his desk and demanded, “What can you do for me?” As the story goes (and it must have been something to see and hear), Dr. Christopher responded to her, “Madame, when was your last bowel movement?” She replied that it had been [as I recall it] 10 days ago. Without another word, he went and got some of his bowel formula. He gave it to her and said, “When you are having 3-5 easy bowel movements per day, come back to see me.” He said that when she came back, she was the most pleasant woman you ever saw.

The moral, if not painfully obvious, is that constipated and liver congested people cannot have healthy thoughts. This happens physically, chemically and energetically. They literally are disposed to be stuck in their issues, unable to let go of them so they cannot fully live life and love others, until they are free of blockages.

Dr. David Pesek, my iridology instructor, used the example of a picture of the fresh produce section of a grocerys tore and then the meat and milk section. He had us ‘feel’ what our energy was like as we observed the pictures, without passing any judgment. As we observed and felt, it is very difficult to raise your level of consciousness while eating only the dead/processed animal foods.

David Wolfe, who is a household name among raw foodists, pushes this idea to the extreme opposite of Dr. Chopra’s philosophy. In his co-authored work Nature’s First Law, we read, “Disease is not psychosomatic in origin...the trouble always begins in the colon with an impaction..”

Certainly, for people choosing botanical medicine, there is a strong pull toward the latter opinion. The power of cleansing to help people to let go of toxic old patterns is very real and the power of raw food to draw someone into the joy of the present (instead of the worries, wants and fears of the past and future) is truly transformational. On the other hand, we can hardly ignore the relationship of the mind to the body, both in causing disease and in curing it.

Real healing, as observed by another teacher of mine, Dr. Richard Schulze, includes enlightenment. You have to learn something from the process. Anything else is just pushing away symptoms.

So the third option, which adheres to the old (and often wrong) adage that “the truth is in the middle” indicates that we are really looking at two sides of one coin.

When I use botanical medicines, I use four steps for establishing a healing pattern. These four steps are half mind-body and half body-mind. I use both because it seems that there is a relationship between mind and body that is something like a swinging door. Things freely go both directions. The body says as much to the mind as the mind says to the body.

There is a biblical reference that supports this relationship, as a matter of fact. Ironically, this probably has narrower appeal than the sources just cited.

In Romans, chapter 14, Paul gives some timeless counsel on this matter: “For one who believeth he may eat all thing; another, who is weak, eateth herbs”

In other words, herbs, or whole plants, are used by the person who is weak, who needs some help.

Then: “For meat destroy not the work of God. It is good neither to eat fl esh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.”

In other words, the best thing is to eat raw plant food which can be eaten without destroying the work of God, and to be respectful of the feelings of others in all circumstances.

And finally: “All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.”

In other words, nothing really hurts the person of faith (the person with a good, steady mind-body who understands how powerfully a single thought or beliefs can change our physiology), but for those with worry, fear, worry, doubt, anger, pain in their hearts, food may become disease within them. If your mind is weak in this way it may be best to eat only live plant foods and use whole plant medicines!

Part of the reason I am so avidly supportive of only using whole (largely raw) plant medicines in my practice is that I have found them to be more effective and safer than their drug and refined vitamin counterparts. The other part, however, is that I have seen in myself, my family and in many clients and colleagues the power of the plant’s vital energy and symbiotic symbolism on our minds and hearts over the long-run.

The person who uses whole, live plant medicines and foods not only gets to work on the symptoms at hand, but also gets to work on their long-term level of consciousness, which has a powerful and intricate hold over health and longevity.

By the same token, it is just as important to work on belief systems and thinking patterns. ✦

Dr. Mercola’s Comment...Nature is certainly full of powerful, potential solutions to most of your health problems. However, once these natural plants are synthesized in a laboratory and highly processed away from their associated accessory factors, they often lack many of their beneficial properties.

It is frequently incorrect to believe that we are smarter than nature and can properly isolate the “active” compound – and assume it is equivalent to whole, unprocessed and fresh raw material.

It is especially sad that the few remaining tribal communities in the world, who still rely on truly natural plants as medicinal remedies, may have their supplies wiped out because of drug-companies’ greed.

Of course, when anything – plant, animal, insects or otherwise – becomes extinct, it will have far-reaching ramifications on the entire ecosystem, in ways that we probably cannot even imagine at this point.

It’s important to remember, though, that while herbs can often be helpful, and typically are not harmful (especially compared to prescription drugs), they are still frequently only addressing your health challenges on a superficial level – and it is uncommon for them to effectively treat the cause of your health challenge.

What you really want to do is focus on finding the foundational causes of your health challenge, and address them at the causal level.

While I am the first one to marvel at the amazing healing properties of plants found in the earth’s rainforests, deserts, and oceans, it’s not always necessary to seek out an exotic plant or herb to cure what ails you.

In fact, some of the best “cures” around are actually right in the food you eat! You will get the most benefits, not from seeking out the latest “miracle food,” but rather by sampling a variety of healthy, fresh and WHOLE foods that your body was designed to eat.

By planning your meals to consist of these foods, you will be getting regular doses of vitamins, minerals, micronutrients, phytochemicals, antioxidants and more, and these things will nurture and support your body.

Medicinal plants certainly do have their place in certain circumstances (provided they are in their natural form), and I believe efforts should be taken to preserve all of them before it’s too late – but it is still the food you eat everyday that can actively shape your health for better or for worse. ✦

Medicinal Plants Face Extinction

Over 400 medicinal plants are at risk of extinction, according to Botanic Gardens Conservation International, largely because of over-collection and deforestation.

Since over 50 percent of prescription drugs are derived from chemicals identifi ed in plants, researchers are concerned that potential cures could become “extinct before they are ever found.”

Among the plants most at risk are:

YEW TREE: The bark is used to create paclitaxel, a widely used cancer drug (it takes six trees to create a single dose).

HOODIA: Large quantities have been harvested from drug companies looking to create an appetite suppressant/weight loss drug.

MAGNOLIA: Magnolia may help fight cancer, dementia and heart disease, but over half the world’s species are threatened.

AUTUMN CROCUS: A natural treatment for gout and a potential treatment for leukaemia, autumn crocus is at risk from over-harvesting.

Although many of the active ingredients from these at-risk plants are now created in a lab, billions of people in the developing world, who still use plant-based medicine as their primary form of health care, will be harshly impacted by their loss.

Plant a herb gardenPlanting your own garden can bring about healing on many levels. Herbs gardens are an easy and logical way to

reap benefi ts from your habitat. They are easy to grow, adaptable to pots, and require only a small space, and herbs

are culinary and medicinal treasures. They add fl avour and sophistication to main dishes, salads and really anything

your mind can conjure. Medicinally, herbs can be added to teas, eaten fresh, or even used topically for physical

treatments. Often, their fl owers are beautiful and their leaves aromatic. Herb gardens remind us of the many ways

that nature provides for us, and with a bit of love and attention, mother earth provides us with an endless bounty.

If you’re thinking of planting your own herb garden you may want to use the herb spiral design. The herb spiral is based on a pattern evolved by permaculture pioneer Bill Mollison in 1970. The 6-8 foot diameter spiral at the heart of the herb spiral creates a diverse mini-ecosystem intended for planting commonly used herbs just outside one’s back door.

In permaculture, the spiral bed is a favourite method to combine beauty, productivity, and variety in a small space. Suggesting both the ordered form of a conch shell and the disarray of an English garden, an herb spiral is ideal for growing herbs in small spaces. Compact and colourful, and busy with honeybees and other insects, the raised, spiralled garden bed built up with rocks and soil is a unique collection of culinary, medicinal, and fragrant plants that provides food for the mind, body, and soul. The herb spiral is truly an ecosystem unto itself, filled with beautiful and useful plants.

One benefit of the raised, spiralled shape is that you can grow in one small space plants requiring a variety of growing conditions. The herb spiral has two diverse microclimates, ranging from a sunny, dry area on the upper northern half to a shaded, moist area on the south and around the base. The raised top drains quickly, and the base gets all the water run-off. As a result, you can grow herbs, greens, medicinals, bulbs, and flowers on one spiral.

Herbs that do well in the uppermost and sunny parts of the spiral include rosemary, thyme, lemon thyme, marjoram, oregano, artemesia, and sage. The base and lower areas of the spiral are perfect for growing herbs that can tolerate shade and water runoff such as mint, lemon balm, pennyroyal, chives, chamomile, mayflower, and summer savory.

The herb spiral is the perfect design to grow all your culinary and medicinal herbs. You may wish to customize your spiral depending on your herbal preferences. Some possible themes include: Aromatic Herbs: Lavender, sage, rosemary, and fennel Tea Herbs: spearmint, peppermint, lemon balm, and chamomile Full-moon Herbs: Artemesia, evening primrose, lamb’s ear, and Chinese lantern. Herbs for Relaxation: chamomile, valerian, skullcap, and hops (grow these up a trellis on the backside of the spiral). Herbs for the Immune System: Echinacea, garlic, yarrow, and coltsfoot.

You may also wish to include a small pond at the base of the her spiral and fill it with herbs such as watercress and chestnut. ✦

A Sad Story from England

For a number of years I have been deeply concerned about the lack of progress in cancer treatment. From the publication of the new Five Year Cancer Plan, one might think that others are concerned too. Well; let’s see.

Cancer research began in the 1890s. I have been active for over 40% of that time, which will count as sufficient qualification to speak. In 1959, when I began, none of us had much of a clue where to find the solution. The problem was purely scientific, never administrative. Today we have the exact reverse. No longer do the answers lie with science. The bottleneck lies primarily with our lack of will, our widespread illiteracy about science and all its aspects, and with the current state of the law, which is deliberately blocking major advances in the treatment of cancer.

I shall be brief. I attended this organisation’s Conference, Britain against Cancer, a year ago. Twice in discussion I referred to a cheap, safe, humane and scientifically-based therapy for most forms of cancer that often improves quality of life, can extend survival, and may lead to remission. The protocol was put out on the web in 1996. It’s still there today. The intention was to stimulate those in positions of authority and power to do something genuinely constructive about this hideous problem. Attempts made by myself as long ago as 1986 to initiate a clinical trial came to nothing. I might add that six weeks after the protocol went out on the web the Medicines Control Agency wrote to inform me that I was in breach of both British and EEC law. I was stopped dead in my tracks.

My problem has been to discover an interface where a dialogue can take place that will lead to positive, fruitful action. It has taken me over twenty years to discover that no such interface exists. Why should that be?

First, no drug company will ever invest money in a therapy that works out at as little as £3 a week, with a total cost of under £300.

Second, charities will be fearful lest income dries up and unemployment results. Moreover, if they step out of line they stand to be hounded. The celebrated attack on the Bristol Cancer Help Centre in England is still fresh in the memory.

Third, research charities and institutes engage in clinical trials so organised that no unconventional line of attack on cancer will ever be seriously considered.

Fourth, clinicians and doctors dare not step out of line for fear of damage to their careers. Worse, none of them seems to be able to understand what I am talking about.

Fifth, European Union legislation introduced in May 2004 is so restrictive that only well-funded organisations such as large pharmaceutical companies can meet the huge cost of dealing with the red tape preliminary to commencing a clinical trial. More of this later.

By Dr. Robert Jones

In 1997 the Labour party achieved a huge majority in the British Parliament, ending a Conservative reign of eighteen years. One of the members newly elected to the House of Commons was Dr. Ian Gibson, a talented scientist with experience both of cancer research and administration. In the following year the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer was founded, its membership including both Houses. In 1999 a National Cancer Director (NCD) was appointed, and a ten-year plan was initiated with the intention of improving cancer care throughout the land.

The Group has acted as a point of focus, drawing together organisations to whom cancer was a primary concern. These included a number of small charities founded chiefl y over the past decade, each concerned with a specifi c kind of malignancy. Each year Conferences are held; these are well attended by representatives of the charities, pharmaceutical industry, pressure groups and patients.

As far back as 1986 I have been attempting to initiate a clinical trial, fi rst with Largactil (chlorpromazine) and, later, from 1996, with Phenergan (promethazine; PMZ). The supportive evidence is strong (Tumori 71: 563-71 1985; Medical Hypotheses 46: 25-29 1996). I raised the idea again during the morning session of the 2006 Conference, and once more in the afternoon. The NCD advised me that the fi rst step would be to submit an application to the Primary Study Care Group within the charity Cancer Research UK. This I had already done. The chairman of the Group did not himself reply. Instead word came back that despite the evidence, including the remarkable recovery of Geoff Cox (see www.cancersupportwa.org.au/research6.php), ` ... the proposals [needed] more scientifi c rigour ... as they stood they would not attract funding.’ On his own initiative the chairman decided not to submit the application to the Group members. And there the matter rested.

The following article was prepared for the 2007 Conference, but the opportunity to read it did not materialise.

Magazine of the Cancer Support Association of WA March 2008

Page 25WELLNESSWELLNESSWELLNESSWELLNESS Magazine

Sixth, there are an awful lot of people to whom the very idea of a solution is anathema. Some of them I know personally; some of them are sitting among us today. Let’s put it to the test, shall we? Hands up all those who would like to see a solution to the cancer problem.

Last, patients themselves frequently refuse even to consider the protocol freely on offer. One of the more sinister aspects of cancer is that the disease can mesmerise its victims into inaction, as a small mammal is petrified by a venomous snake.

So would it be right to claim that nothing has happened during the past year? No – not a bit of it. Since that last All Party Conference, in the United Kingdom alone a victim of cancer has died every three and a quarter minutes of every hour of every day; 150,000 men, women and children.

What, then, can we expect in the next twelve months? More meetings? Yet more modifications to our brand-new cancer plan, about to replace the former ten-year one, which seems to have run into a spot of bother? Still more expenditure? Another shuffling around of deck chairs? Is it impertinent to ask what good it all will do in terms of helping the stricken to avoid misery and death? What is absolutely certain is that in the next year there will be another 150,000 deaths.

At this point I wish to ask Dr. Ian Gibson to endorse my claim that there is in the public domain a working therapy for cancer open to anyone to try and which should urgently be entered into a clinical trial. It may be that some here are unaware of Dr. Gibson’s role in fighting cancer, first as research scientist and then as administrator, having founded the All-Party Cancer Group in the Houses of Parliament. We are much in his debt. Without being sycophantic I would like to pay tribute to Ian for his kindness in looking into my work and for his support over the years.

I do not claim to have the answer to cancer, but there is a prototype therapy in the public domain. And those among you with a grasp of the manner in which science and technology progress will know how crucially important the initial success of a prototype is. Did anyone say to the Wright brothers: OK, chaps, you’ve achieved powered flight; so when are you going to produce Concorde?

Who, then, is interested in the next urgent, essential step; namely, holding a clinical trial? The answer is: hardly anybody. A moment ago I mentioned EU law, forced upon us by the busybodies of Brussels. What the law allows is the administration to cancer patients of totally new `drugs’. What these substances all have in common is that nobody has had clinical experience with any of them. Have cancer patients not had enough of poisons that cause depression, lassitude, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea? Poisons that emaciate, destroying the immune system and exposing victims to the threat of death from

infections which normally pose no threat to health? Poisons that strip the skin off the mucous surfaces off the inside of the mouth, leaving raw, painful surfaces and ulcers? Poisons that on occasion even kill? These are the modern equivalents of the medieval torture chamber, sanctioned by legislation that actually has the effrontery to state: `The accepted basis for the conduct of clinical trials is founded in the protection of human rights and the dignity of the human being... as reflected in the 1996 version of the Helsinki Declaration of Human Rights. The protection of the clinical trial subject is safeguarded through risk assessments based on screening by ethics committees.’

I can tell you about ethics committees. I can tell you that not a single one of their members has ever been exposed to any of the chemical horrors which they so happily and thoughtlessly inflict on the victims of cancer. And if they had, I wonder what they would think about the effectiveness of the manner in which their human rights have been protected.

And it is that selfsame law which places obstacles in the way of treating cancer with a drug that has been around for sixty years, yet with which there has been an enormous amount of clinical experience, though not with cancer. A drug in current use as an antidote for travel sickness. Not only have there been no recorded deaths in the medical literature since its introduction, but this drug is sufficiently safe to be freely sold as a paediatric sedative over the counter in many countries. How much safer can one get? A drug which in my hands has often improved quality of life and extended survival. A drug which can make sensitive metastatic cancers regress, and even produce remissions. Not bad for a mere prototype. But this is a drug that does not satisfy the law as it stands. It would have to jump through the artificial hoops created by the legislature of May 2004; and that is something nobody wishes to bring about.

I speak of a wrong law, an evil law. It is a law which, rather than protecting the patient, as indeed its ostensible purpose should be, ensures the perpetuation of human tides of wretchedness and death across all nations, tides which, as the ever-increasing annual death tolls tell us, gain strength with the passage of time. Had the deliberate aim of the legislators been to prolong and intensify the suffering of cancer victims and their families, the measure could not have been more effectively drafted. This is not a law created by honourable men of good will. It is a law not of the peoples of these islands, nor should it apply to the peoples of these islands. It is an alien thing that has no place in decent, civilised society. It is a stench of a law, a whited sepulchre that should be buried and put entirely out of mind.

Before I end, here is a true story from last Christmas. At the time it moved me to tears; I shall not be ashamed if it does so again.

A little girl was visiting Father Christmas in a department store in London. She said to him: `In your sleigh, do you fly very high?’

`Yes,’ he answered, `I do. Very high indeed.’

With the big pathetic eyes of a deceived child she looked up at him and asked: `Would you say hello to my Daddy for me?’

I hereby issue a challenge to all of you today. Unless we do something there are going to be lots more little girls and boys who are going to lose their Daddys and their Mummys. The question is: how much do we care? We come to these meetings, and at the end of the day all we have done is sit on our hands and ensure that the misery and the bereavement continue unchecked. In a day or two all of you will have forgotten about the nutcase who stood up at this meeting, wasting your time. But before you forget, remember this: the suffering is not going to stop until you step out of line. I invite those who are interested to contact me today. Let us get together and see what we can do.

* * *Instead of this presentation, a short statement was made, the gist of which was that over the next twelve months all that could be expected would be a shuffling of deck chairs. The audience was provided with sufficient information with which to trace the DIY protocol on the Cancer Support Association site. Nobody took any notice, despite the bald statement that over the next twelve months another 150,000 cancer patients would die in the United Kingdom. The founder of a charity to support patients with pancreatic cancer also attended the meeting. When I saw her over lunch I said that this particular form of malignancy was a sure killer, with a five-year survival rate of only 2-4%. Might she be interested in a simple, innocuous, cheap and humane treatment for the condition? No, not at all. She reminded me I had said precisely the same thing to her the year before. Her attitude was no different to that of all the other representatives of charities, happy to draw their salaries from money raised through the personal efforts of well-meaning volunteers who genuinely believed that they were really doing something useful in the fight against cancer.

I entered cancer research in 1959. Fifteen years later I had a bright idea. An account of what happened and, more to the point, what did not happen after that, will be found in my book, In the Darker Shadow of Science. Looking for suitable drugs with which to treat cancer, I was led first to Largactil in 1982, and then to PMZ in 1990. Both agents belong to the class of drugs known as phenothiazines; both were introduced for the treatment of conditions very different from cancer; and neither appears to have been tested for anti-cancer activity prior to their clinical introduction some sixty years before. A DIY treatment for cancer was first put on the internet in 1996; apart from the Cancer Information Support Service in Sydney, its impact has been negligible.

In 1997 Jill Royce derived benefit from PMZ in the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and published her book How We Controlled our Cancers in 2000. At considerable personal expense she sent out a copy

to every lending library in Australasia. From time to time I receive letters from grateful cancer patients thanking me, or, more commonly, requesting advice. Geoff Cox, whose basal cell carcinoma of fifteen years standing cleared away almost completely after sixteen days, has been a notable example. For all I know there could be numerous instances where patients, having read Jill’s book, have derived benefit. Good luck to them; but, rather than put pen to paper and write, let alone trying to create much-needed publicity, remission has been regarded in the same light as the relief of a headache with an aspirin.

Looking back over a career spanning almost half a century, scientific progress has been matched by an abject, miserable failure to persuade. The hope that anecdotal success in the treatment of patients would lead to public pressure on the medical fraternity and induce them to try the procedure for themselves has proved forlorn. Meanwhile, though, I pay grateful tribute to the CSA for its support, which has provided a beacon of hope not just to many patients, even that proportion who, sadly, derived little or no benefit, but also to myself. What progress has been made owes a great deal to the organisation.

So, is there anything you can do? If you have cancer, PMZ may provide you with a chance of recovery. There is no hazard to life; the side effects are minimal; care has been taken to ensure that there is no fee; and the cost is of the order of AUS$8 a week. If you have taken this and benefited, would you please write a short summary of, say, a few hundred words and send it the Wellness magazine for publication so we can spread the word?

And if you can see a means of doing so, please try to generate publicity. Please contact your local radio or TV station; or write to your local newspaper. Tell your fellow patients, and urge them to take action. I have spent nearly fifty years in the service of cancer patients. It is not unfair to admit that precious little has come out of it so far. As the project continues I have recently encountered indifferent health; it has become clear I cannot go on for much longer...now it’s your turn.

* * *The above was typed on the last day of 2007. Within a few days a dramatic new development took place. As I describe in my book In the Darker Shadow of Science, in November 1990 the late Dr. Riad Mahmud, a diabetologist, told me he had given Phenergan and calcium by the intravenous route. It was immediately clear that this could be a highly effective means of treating cancer; but intravenous injections can only be given by appropriately trained staff, and no patient was prepared to undergo the procedure. Until now... ✦

Dr. Robert Jones has undertaken ground-breaking research into cancer and its treatment with Phenergan (Promethazine). He is the author of a book titled ‘In the Darker Shadow of Science: The Subjugation of Cancer’ which is available for loan from the CSA library or for sale from CSA Wellness Shop. More information about Phenergan can be found on our website Cancer Support Online at: www.cancersupportwa.org.au.

The rates of recurrence or death from colon cancer were nearly 3.5 times higher among patients who ate a typical Western diet than among those who followed it least closely, in a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers collected data on 1,009 people who had undergone surgery and chemotherapy for colon cancer in the two years between April 1999 and May 2001. In all cases, the cancer had metastasized to the lymph nodes but had not spread to other organs. The participants filled out standardized surveys about their dietary preferences and habits during chemotherapy and the six months following. They were then tracked for five years.

Of the 1,009 patients who began the study, 324 experienced cancer recurrence during those five years, and 223 of those died. Only 28 of the people who did not experienced recurrence died in the same period.

The dietary habits of the cancer patients fell into two basic patterns: The “Western” diet was characterized by the consumption of large amounts of red and processed meats, refined grains and sugars, the “prudent” diet was characterized by consumption of large amounts of fruits, vegetables and relatively higher amounts of poultry and fish relative to red meat.

The researchers found that cancer recurrence and death were almost 3.5 times more common among people who adhered most closely to the Western diet than among those who ate the lowest amounts of red and processed meats, refined grains and sugars.

“Doctors who treat colon cancer patients need to have the conversation about diet,” said researcher Jeffrey Meyerhardt. “From my own experience I know that patients ask about this a lot. They want to know what they should be eating and whether they should be exercising.”

The researchers warned that the study only demonstrates a correlation, and not causality between diet and colon cancer. Consumer health advocate Mike Adams has no doubt about the causes of colorectal cancer. “There’s no question that eating dead, processed and chemically-treated foods promotes the development of colon cancer,” he said. “Preventing colon cancer is as simple as adopting a diet primarily based on raw plants and living foods. Colon cancer simply disappears, and cancer risk throughout the body plummets on a raw foods diet.” ✦

Ginger Tea“If you should sink your teeth into a fresh piece of ginger root, you will feel the sun’s

fi re coursing through you...”

On a cool day there is nothing like a steaming, aroma-filled cup of ginger tea to warm you up and awaken your senses. Prized for its healing properties and for adding flavour to dishes, this ordinary looking brown spice has been used since ages in eastern cultures.

It’s the very fiery characteristic of ginger root which gives it much of its medicinal properties, both in its dried as well as raw form. The dried ginger root is a thermogenic, expectorant, laxative, appetizer, stimulant, as well as an effective cure for stomach disorders. Hence, the dried ginger root is ground and used to cure a whole range of ailments like coughs, colds, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, inflammations of the joints, flatulence, motion sickness, colic, cholera, asthma, headaches, and even anorexia. Raw ginger is also a thermogenic, and is also an anti-flatulent, digestive, appetizer, and a laxative.

Ginger is also used extensively in aromatherapy. An essential oil is extracted from steam distilling the unpeeled, dried and ground ginger root. Ginger oil is used by combining it with the oils of cedar wood, sandalwood, and patchouli, which renders a spicy and woody scent to the mix.

The active ingredients in ginger oil are oleoresin and terpenes, which are responsible for its lymph cleansing, antiseptic, mild constipation relief, and circulation-stimulating qualities. According to research, it has been shown that ginger reduces the absorption of cholesterol in the liver and blood, thereby lowering blood cholesterol. It has also been found that ginger blocks the effects of prostaglandin, which is a substance that is responsible for the inflammation of the blood vessels inside the brain, which is what causes migraine.

Ginger’s property of being a digestive aid is largely due to the shogoals and gingerols that it contains. These help to neutralize the acids in the stomach, stimulate the secretion of digestive juices, and tone the digestive tract’s muscles.

Ginger tea has been used as a remedy against flu and colds for centuries, both in India and China, as well as other countries in the east. According to Chinese culture, its powerful yang energy is what warms the lungs and stomach. Ginger tea has been used in China for 2,500 years to treat sore throat, nasal congestion, and sinus pain. ✦

Lemongrass & Ginger Tea

Ginger may be useful for treating and preventing ovarian cancer, according to a new study.

The spicy root not only has antioxidant and cancer-fighting properties, but the study also found that the ginger component gingerol exerts anti-inflammatory effects by mediating NF-KB, a protein complex that regulates your immune system’s response to infection.

In the study of cultured ovarian cancer cells, ginger inhibited growth and modulated secretion of angiogenic factors, which is a fundamental step in the transition of tumours from a dormant state to a malignant state.

The ginger also inhibited vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and interleukin-8 (IL-8), two compounds that are related to cancer growth. ✦

The Australia Day celebration was exceptionally special for me this year as only days before, my application for citizenship was accepted! It is truly a privilege to be part of this country and society. Many people may take an event like this for granted but after leaving South Africa and then travelling extensively, I’ve seen that for many people in other parts of the world, life is full of hardship. These experiences have enhanced my appreciation of Australia way of life.

Looking back on my life to this point, I realise that the difficult, life-changing choices I made, have led me to precisely where I am today. If even one of those decisions had been different, I would not be exactly where I am right now. Of course I have not been entirely alone in this – every single person I have come into contact with has played a role in my life. This is the beauty of life – each and every person on the planet is important to the whole; we influence one another, and we are all needed in the greater scheme of things. The full meaning of the words ‘WE ARE ONE” was in my heart when I set sail from South Africa.

This article serves as a reminder that we sometimes need to focus our attention on who we really are and how it is our own choices which determine our lives and have a ripple effect on those around us. And because we are connected, there are Universal Laws which govern us – whether we choose to trust in them or not!

Natural LawsThe universe is governed by natural laws and we are all subject to them. The Law that influences what goes on in our lives is ‘The Law of the Circle’. Historically it has been referred to as ‘karma’ or the ‘law of cause and effect’ or ‘What you sow, so shall ye reap.’

The underlying principle is that “WHAT WE SEND OUT THROUGH OUR THOUGHTS, WORDS, ACTIONS AND FEELINGS RETURNS TO US.” (Cota-Robles) This law has a tremendous impact on our lives whether we believe in it or not. Just as we are subjected to the law of gravity...if you jump off a roof you will still hit the bottom!

The Law of the CircleThe Law of the Circle works in this way. We are made up of electron energy which is affected by thoughts, actions and feelings. For example when we send out a feeling of love to another, it draws the feeling of the same vibration along the way and when it reaches the recipient, bathes them in the love vibration. It permeates every cell in the body. The energy does not stop there but returns to the origin drawing additional energy vibrating at the same frequency. By the time it gets back to the sender it has magnified immensely.

Through self-awareness we can understand how our thoughts, actions, fears, words and worries have created our present situation.

Once we are aware of the thought and behaviour patterns behind the choices we’ve made which have resulted in a negative situation, we can consciously change our thoughts and actions to attract a positive outcome instead. “We are not victims of circumstance”. (Cota-Robles)

As difficult as it may be to accept, our current circumstances are the result of a natural law in operation; the law of cause and effect, the law of the circle! We have much more control over things in our lives than most of us realise! Those who are more enlightened know with all their being that we have in fact attracted to ourselves each and every thing we have or do not have in our life! “Once we accept responsibility for our life, we have the power to change.” (Cota-Robles)

The Power of ChoiceThe power to choose is our birthright. Another universal law! We can choose to consciously apply these universal laws to achieve positive effects in our life, or we can simply ignore them at our peril!

“We all, that is All Life, contains within the atoms the same genetic code given by the One and only Creator...All souls have stored within the molecular, cellular structure of themselves the wisdom to know All That Is! We have the power to change our thoughts and to make our lives better by going within and connecting with the Creator, the Source. We are all one, connected to the Creator. There is no separation.” (Sananda)

Know who you areTo apply the Universal Law of Oneness which states “Love thy Brother as thyself and Love God before all things” we truly need to love and accept ourselves. Sanada says “Know thyself and be free.” We can find Peace Within by connecting with The Still Small Voice Within which guides each and every one of us.

The challenge is to find a quiet time every day in our busy lives to be still long enough to connect with the universal force/energy! Through meditation and other methods we can get to the stillness and connectedness with All that IS. We already know this state, but over time, in our ‘busyness’ we forget who we really are. It is time for us to remember…we are one. ✦

Quan Yin: the Goddess of Compassion and Mercy

Quan Yin is the most universally beloved of Chinese deities. Also spelled Kuan Yin or Guan Yin, she is the very embodiment of compassionate loving kindness. As the Bodhisattva of Compassion, she hears the cries of all beings.

In many images, she carries the pearls of illumination or pours a stream of healing waters from a vase, blessing her devotees with physical and spiritual peace. She is often shown with a dragon; the age old symbol of the highest spiritual essence, embodying wisdom, strength, and the divine powers of transformation.

She is said to have taken a vow that she will enter Heaven last of all, denying herself full enlightenment until after all others have completed their cycle of lives.

There are numerous legends that recount the miracles which Quan Yin performs to help those who call on her. Like Artemis, she is a Virgin Goddess who protects women, offers them a religious life as an alternative to marriage and grants children to those who want them.

This brief explanation of the nature of Quan Yin, a true Celestial Bodhisattva, may alas be far from the real truth of her depth of compassion. In dealing with what pertains to mystical perceptions, explanations are seldom satisfactory, so greatly do words distort and diminish the realty they are used to convey. We may, for the moment, put aside the question of Quan Yin’s reality; just the sheer beauty of the concept of an exquisitely lovely being whose chief attribute is pure, unwavering compassion is in itself appealing enough to claim our admiration.

Even when brought down to the level of a Goddess – and it is this that painters and sculptors often portray her – Quan Yin is unique among the heavenly hierarchy in being utterly free from pride or vengefulness and reluctant to punish even those to whom a severe lesson would be appropriate. Such beings, however great their demerits, could easily attain rebirth and renewal by calling upon her graces with utter and absolute sincerity; thus, even for one kneeling beneath the executioner’s sword already raised to strike, a single heartfelt cry to Quan Yin Bodhisattva would cause the blade to fall shattered to the ground.

By meditating on the qualities of Quan Yin, which everyone contains in potential, we begin to cultivate compassion and a deep sense of service. In doing so we not only help others but also move more peacefully in our world.

Meditation onQuan Yin

Quan Yin Meditation: Find a comfortable position and close your eyes. Allow your breathing to deepen and your mind and body to relax. Imagine that it is nighttime and that you are on top of a hill looking out over the ocean. The full moon has just risen and the moonlight shimmers on the water. You gaze at the moon for a long time; the moonlight is powerful but soft, and looking at it makes you feel calm and happy.

The moon now begins to get brighter and brighter, so bright you can barely look at it. Gradually, it becomes Quan Yin herself, her whole body surrounded by a glowing aureole. She stands on a lotus that floats on the waves. At the sight of you she smiles a beautiful smile, and tears of happiness shine in her eyes. Imagine her radiance filling you, her strength, her peace and her compassion becoming a part of you. If you repeat her name, your mind will be calm, and she will stay with you.

Finally, it is time for her to leave, and she becomes smaller and smaller. At last the sea and sky vanish too, and you rest in contemplation of the beautiful, empty space that is left. Let yourself become space. When you are ready, come back into your body and slowly stretch. Open your eyes and look at the world about you. ✦
