Conference DESCRIPTION and OBJECTIVES

CONFERENCE DESCRIPTIONPOGO 2017 provides current updates on recent developments and issues in women’s and children’s health. Evidence-based management strategies are discussed with the goal to engage the interdisciplinary team in improving care for women, children and their families. The target audience is family physicians, obstetricians, gynecologists, pediatricians, medical residents, nurses, nurse practitioners and midwives. Other health professionals are welcome to attend. This conference includes interactive plenary and small group sessions.

CONFERENCE LEARNING OBJECTIVESParticipants in POGO 2017 will be able to:

• Identify screening methods and resources to aid in the diagnosis of common health issues in women and children

• Propose evidence-based management and risk reduction strategies for common health issues

• Decide when to refer for specialized treatment• Describe new technologies and programs in

women’s and children’s health• Apply the most current practice guidelines

affecting women and children• Advocate for improvements in the healthcare

system

Dr. Krista Baerg, BSN, MD, FRCPCDr. Baerg is a consultant Pediatrician and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Saskatchewan. Prior to entering medicine, she completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and worked as a nurse in northern Canada.She is an active member of the

Saskatoon Health Region Pediatric Pain Inter-professional Practice Council and Newborn Jaundice Working Group. She is also an active member of the Canadian Pediatric Society. Krista has served on the executive and as President (2015-2017) of the Section of Community Pediatrics, the Public Education Sub-Committee, and the Action Committee for Children and Youth.

Dr. Angela Bowen, RN PhD Dr. Bowen is a Professor in the College of Nursing and Psychiatry. She has extensive clinical, education, and administration experience in Obstetrics and Mental Health. Her research focus, Maternal Mental Health, brings these areas together. She is active in knowledge translation activities increasing awareness of maternal mental

health, and currently leads the MotherFirst Strategy, which developed policy recommendations to address gaps related to maternal mental health, including education, screening, and treatment. She is presently the Co-Chair of the RNAO Guidelines for Postpartum Depression, and on committees for Family-Centred Maternity, Newborn Care National Guidelines and the SOGC’s Guidelines for Nutrition Across the Lifespan.

Dr. Mahli Brindamour, MD, FRCPCDr. Brindamour is a General Pediatrician at the University of Saskatchewan. She has a special interest in caring for refugee children and underserved populations. She serves on the board of the North American Society of Refugee Healthcare Providers. She completed her medical degree at

the Université de Montréal and her Pediatric Residency at the University of Saskatchewan.

Dr. Peter Butt, BA, MD, CCFP, FCFPDr. Butt is a graduate of McMaster University and a Certificant and Fellow with the College of Family Physicians of Canada. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in a position

dedicated to Addiction Medicine, and serves as a consultant to Mental Health and Addictions in the Saskatoon Health Region. National committee work includes the National Alcohol Strategy Advisory Committee, chair of the Canadian Alcohol Low Risk Drinking Guidelines Expert Advisory Group, and co-chair of the Standard Drink Label Working Group for the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse; and physician lead on the Alcohol Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral project for the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Provincially he is the physician lead on the Saskatchewan provincial “Take Home Naloxone”project, chairs the Opioid Advisory Committee for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan, and serves on the Health Canada - First Nation Prescription Drug Abuse Initiative.

Dr. George Carson, MD, FRCSCDr. Carson is a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecological and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan and is currently serving as President of the SOGC. Since April Fool’s Day of 1989, he has been the Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at

Regina General Hospital, now Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region. He was Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological in the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region from 1995 to 2011 and currently is the Senior Medical Officer for Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region. Dr. Carson’s proudest accomplishments with the SOGC include being the founding Co-Chair of the Advances in Labour and Risk Management (ALARM) Course. He has taught the course nationally and internationally. Dr. Carson has been on several other provincial and SOGC committees and is an Honorary Member of the CMA. He is Chair of the SOGC Medico-Legal committee and has served on the SOGC Board of Directors.


Conference SPEAKERS

Dr. Melissa Denis Dr. Denis is a Child and Youth Psychiatrist and joined the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Saskatchewan after completing her training in Psychiatry in 2014. Melissa has a special interest in Psychosomatic Medicine and has

been spearheading the development of a Psychiatric Consultation and Liaison Service at Royal University Hospital. She also works closely with Child and Youth Mental Health Services in Saskatoon to provide support and consultation to schools and mental health clinicians. Melissa is currently working with Northern Medical Services and the University of Saskatchewan Department of Psychiatry to establish a Child and Youth Psychiatry Community Consultation and Liaison service in Saskatchewan’s northern communities.

Dr. Vicki Holmes, MD, NCMP Dr. Holmes graduated from University of Saskatchewan in 1973 and has been practicing family medicine in Saskatoon from 1977 to 2017. Her special interests have been women’s health, obstetrics and Palliative Care. Together with others she started the first menopause

clinic in Saskatchewan, the Women’s Midlife Health Program now situated at Saskatoon City Hospital. She is certified as a Menopause Clinician by the North American Menopause Society. She is on the national board of the Canadian Menopause Society.

Dr. Simon Kapaj, MD, MPHDr. Kapaj is a Deputy Medical Health Officer working on Immunization and Vaccine Preventable Diseases for the Saskatoon Health Region. He is a graduate of the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency Program of the University of Saskatchewan. He previously

worked in Albania as a Family Physician, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, specializing in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine. Dr. Kapaj also holds a Masters of Public Health Degree from the University of Saskatchewan.

Dr. Ayisha Kurji, BSC, MD, FRCPC Dr. Kurji is a general pediatrician in Saskatoon practicing both inpatient and outpatient general pediatrics, and mom to two kids. She completed medical school at the University of Calgary in 2004, and her pediatric residency at the University of Saskatchewan

in 2008, and has been practicing in Saskatoon ever since. Dr. Kurji’s special interests include adolescent medicine (specifically Eating Disorders), medical education, patient safety, and advocating for and providing excellent pediatric care to all patients.

Dr. Deborah Lake, B.A. , M.A., Ph.D.Dr. Lake is a clinical psychologist who earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Delaware. She achieved her M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Waterloo. Over the past 40 years, Dr. Lake has provided

clinical expertise in psychology in North Carolina, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. She has led workshops on interprofessional collaboration for educators and health professionals, including clinical teams from Veterans Affairs Canada. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Clinical Health Psychology Department at the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Jocelyne Martel, MD, FRCSC, FACOGDr. Martel is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Saskatchewan. She received her medical degree and completed her residency at the University of Saskatchewan, followed by training in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Since 1996, she has been in a group practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Saskatoon. She is the Clinical Head of Obstetrics and the Director of the Fetal Assessment Unit at Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital. Her interests include resident education and evaluation, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, multiple pregnancy, and prenatal diagnosis.

Dr. Veronica McKinney, MD, CCFPDr. McKinney is the Director of Northern Medical Services, a division of the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, and is of Cree/Métis descent. She provides leadership in health development to support and promote the continued

advancement of healthy communities, families and people in remote areas. She teaches and promotes Aboriginal Health at the University of Saskatchewan, and is a strong advocate, having experienced the inequities firsthand. Dr. McKinney contributes on many boards and committees. She also practices clinical medicine at the Westside Community Clinic in Saskatoon. She has worked with urban, rural and remote Aboriginal populations, and has provided services as a Family Practitioner, Emergency Room Physician, Nurse and Lab Technologist over a span of 25 years. She believes strongly in her traditional cultural teachings and applies them daily in her practice of medicine.

Della Magnusson, BScN, N.P. Della graduated with Diploma in Nursing from Kelsey Institute of Applied Arts and Science in 1985. She completed the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program at Siast in 1994 and her BScN degree in 2009. She started her career in northern Alberta working in Pediatrics and ER and has also

worked in the Virgin Islands and Pond Inlet, Nunavut. Della worked in La Loche, Saskatchewan where her passion for women’s health and obstetrics grew. She spent over 500 hours air time doing medivacs where all women in labor were flown to Meadow Lake and Fort McMurray. Della has also worked in Baffin Island where she provided full prenatal care up until 36 weeks until the women were flown to Iqaluit for delivery. She also spent one year working in high risk labor and delivery in Port Arthur Texas, and a few years working in rural hospitals in Arkansas in ER and obstetrics. She currently works at the Westside Community Clinic where she practices with a team of health care health care professionals providing prenatal care for high and low risk women including those with HIV and addictions issues. She is also working with Sanctum with hopes to procure funding to open a ten bed prenatal care home for pregnant women with HIV. She a single mother of two girls.

Dr. Sally Mahood, BA, MD, CCFP, FCFPDr. Mahood is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine who practices and teaches in the Family Medicine Unit in Regina and, University of Saskatchewan. She has special interests in Women’s Health, Professionalism and Social Accountability.

Dr. Melissa Mirosh, MD, FRCSC Dr. Mirosh was born and raised in Calgary, AB. She completed her first degree at the University of Calgary, followed by medical school at Queen’s University. She did her Obstetrics and Gynecology residency training at the U of S in Saskatoon, graduating in

2005, and then returned to Queen’s to complete the CARE (Contraception Advice, Research, and Education) fellowship. After finishing her education, she worked in private practice in Southern Alberta before returning to Saskatoon in 2010. She worked in an academic position in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, College of Medicine, U of S, until the spring of 2016, when she joined the clinic at CCFP. Her work interests include obstetrics, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, and contraception. When not at work, Dr. Mirosh can generally be found on the playground with her three kids, or off in the mountains. She is a die hard Stampeders fan (although will cheer for the Riders if they are playing anyone else!) and has won a longest drive golfing competition.

Dr. Renee Morissette Dr. Morissette is a home-grown family physician. She received all of her medical training in Saskatchewan. Her love of Saskatchewan has prompted her to work throughout the province, from small northern First Nations communities to bustling regional emergency rooms. She did a year

of Enhanced Surgical Skills, which included six months of training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2013. She recently started working at the Women’s Mid-Life Health Clinic. She is working on becoming NAMS certified. She is proud to be bilingual in French.

Dr. Ramkumar Natarajan, MD, M.B.B.S.

Terri PetersonTerri is a sessional lecturer with the University of Regina, Faculty of Social Work and teaches within the areas of human development, anti-oppressive social work, feminist social work practice, communications and critical thinking. She has facilitated

several narrative research projects within her career which are published with the Dulwich Centre to honoring the knowledge and skills of the participants. She is dedicated to social justice, empowering families, and women’s health working in the field of mental health & wellness for the last twelve years. Terri has worked with women struggling with food and body issues throughout her career and she is currently supporting young people and their families within her role as therapist & clinical coordinator within Youth Community Counselling, Saskatoon Health Region.

Dr. Ayaz Ramji, MDBorn and raised in London, England, Dr. Ramji attended Medical school at RCSI, Dublin, Ireland, graduating in 1989. He completed his UK Paediatric training at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and St George’s Paediatric training scheme.

Currently, he is in his R4 year at Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. Dr. Ramji has been practicing as a General Pediatrician in Prince Albert since 1998.

Dr. Darrien Rattray, BSC, MD, FRCSCOriginally from a small reserve in northern B.C., Dr. Rattray attended medical school at the University of Alberta. He completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency training at Dalhousie University prior to a Minimally Invasive Gynecology Fellowship in

Regina under Dr. John Thiel. He currently practices in Regina where he resides with his wife and two children. Dr. Rattray is coordinating the MIS Fellowship Program in Regina. He is the OBS/GYNE Residency Program Director with the University of Saskatchewan at the Regina site and also the Simulation Co-director for the program. He has an interest in fibroids, endometriosis, hysteroscopic sterilization, chronic pelvic pain, and surgical simulation and is involved in several research studies in these areas. Most significantly, Dr. Rattray is known more for his flashy socks than for any kind of surgical expertise.

Dr. Lexy Regush, MD, FRCSC Dr. Regush grew up on a farm near Moosomin, Saskatchewan. She obtained her education through the University of Saskatchewan, completing residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2007. She entered practice in Saskatoon, and runs a busy, broad practice of both obstetrics and

gynecology. She has been involved in the residency training program for several years, and has a special interest in caring for vulnerable women, especially those with addiction issues or HIV in pregnancy.

Martha Roberts Martha has been deeply interested in women’s health since the birth of her first child. Prior to her midwifery education, Martha worked in community-based women’s health initiatives and participatory action research with low-income mothers and children in the Lower Mainland.

Martha received her Bachelor of Midwifery from the University of British Columbia in 2007, and is currently completing her Masters of Science from Simon Fraser University on inequities which shape women’s experiences of prenatal care. Extending her enthusiasm for community health from the local to the international community, Martha is an active participant in the People’s Health Movement and works directly with Community-Based Health Programs in the Philippines.

Sarah Sokoluk Sarah is a Registered Nurse with a focus on pediatric respiratory health. She has practiced Pediatric Intensive Care nursing in Saskatoon for 16 years, and Public Health Nursing the past year. She was an instructor for the University Of Saskatchewan College Of Nursing from 2007-2016. Her research focus explores the relationship between pediatric asthma severity and quality of life. She has been involved with the Lung Association of Saskatchewan for the past 20 years in both volunteer work and employment. She is the Advocacy and Educational representative for the Canadian Respiratory Healthcare Professionals Leadership Council and sits on the Saskatchewan Thoracic Society Executive.

The Continuing Medical Education Fund assists physicians with the costs associated with continuing medical education courses and materials. Physicians may make one or more applications during a calendar year (January 1 to December 31) or may allow the funds to carry over for use in the following year. (i.e. a physician can “bank” one year’s entitlement and claim for two years worth of entitlement in the subsequent year. The maximum carry-over period is one year.) Applications must be received by January 15 following the year in which the entitlement is due to expire.
