May 3, 2020 Fourth Sunday of Easter

From Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, It has been a long time since we have been able to come together, seven Sundays have passed since we gathered for the Third Sunday of Lent, and in many ways we seem to be waiting for the Resurrection to take place. Unfortunately, we still have a couple of weeks until the State government allows us to resume our celebration of the Sacraments as a community, if the date is not moved again. If things go as planned, we should be able to celebrate weekday Masses beginning on May 15th and Sunday Masses that weekend. Over the past weeks, I kept thinking back to the Thirty-day Ignatian retreat I went on during my time in the seminary. Not many seminarians would ask to do this thirty-day retreat, which would encompass the month of January into the first week of February, which was part of the Christmas break and workshop time. However, after experiencing the Ignatian eight-day retreat a couple of years prior, I asked permission to apply for a spot. When I arrived at Eastern Point Retreat House, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, I had a day and a half to familiarize myself with the surroundings, and with the men I would be with over the next month. Other than myself, the other men were Jesuit novices, who were in their second year of formation, from the provinces of New York and New England, and Chicago and Detroit. The evening of the second day, we entered into silence, speaking only to our spiritual directors once a day, and giving the responses at Mass. Part of these exercises are asking for the experience of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and while not going through the physical torture, there was definitely emotional experiences with these periods of prayer. To experience the Passion of Christ as an observer, as a disciple witnessing the suffering of someone you love enduring this agony was overwhelming, as it is meant to be, and the blessing of experiencing it in other ways, empathizing with Jesus, was draining. Just as emotional was the ex-perience of the Resurrection, and in many ways it was also draining. There were those who arrived at it fairly easily, fairly quickly, but for others, we were told sometimes people did not come to experience the Resurrection in the periods of prayers while on re-treat. This was something I was coming to fear. In the days between experiencing the Passion and Crucifixion, and my eventual release with the Resurrection, I sat in the Tomb. It is difficult to describe what all this means to those who have never experienced it, let alone may be unfamiliar with the Ignatian exercises, but the closest thing I can come to, is to say it was a feeling of emptiness. It was not despair or hopelessness, it was just a nothingness, a feeling of being separated from God. There is a reason why I kept coming back to this experience over the past seven weeks. Not only did we enter into this new social and cultural experience during Lent, but we have come to this Easter Season with an expectation that has yet to be realized by many of us. I know, through my Faith and my experience, that Jesus Christ is Present in the Tabernacle, that when I celebrate the Mass, He is Present, there is no doubt in my mind that this is True. But there still seems to be that absence of Christ in another way; in the worship community that He calls around His Sacred Altar, to hear His voice in the word proclaimed and to experience Him in the fullness of the Faith. While I am glad that many, or most of you, are taking advantage of this time to enter into Spiritual Communion with the Bishop and other priests on the Catholic Faith Network, my great desire is to celebrate the great Communion we are called to as a parish community. See you in a couple of weeks. Pax, Fr. Henry

May 3, 2020 Fourth Sunday of Easter IN NEED OF A SHEPHERD For a while it was very fashionable to own pigs as pets. The publicity surrounding these creatures informed us that they were—contrary to their popular image—very clean animals, and also quite smart. Sad to say, sheep will most likely never enjoy this sort of do-mes c vogue. They are neither clean nor smart and are largely de-fenseless when le on their own, even in large numbers. The biblical image of us as the flock of sheep is not a par cularly fla ering one. Sheep without a shepherd are truly sad, because they most likely will perish either from their inability to fend for themselves or from their lack of defenses against predators. Placing ourselves in the heart of this unfla ering image can reinforce our faith. Un l we come to a profound realiza on of how much we need a shepherd, we cannot appreciate how deeply blessed we are to have been given a Shep-herd, one who laid down his life for us and was raised to life eternal in the Spirit, so he might guide us and we might follow him in faith forever. Jesus asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5). Greeks brought Philip their request: “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Philip’s answer to each question: bring people to Jesus! At the Last Supper, finally, Philip had a request of his own: “Show us the Father!” (John 14:8). Jesus had three last questions for Philip: “You still don’t know me? How can you ask that? Don’t you believe?” And an answer: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (John 14:10). Today’s James is not John’s brother, Zebedee’s son, but, tradition says, author of the New Testa-ment Letter of James, who died praying for his murderers in Jesus’ words: “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Few histori-cal details for either saint, but lessons aplenty: Bring every question we have and everybody we meet to Jesus; be, as James’ letter chal-lenges, “doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Diocese of Rockville Centre announces Morning Star Initiative

As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a bold plan, called the Morning Star Initiative, to revitalize Catho-lic elementary school education on Long Island. The goal of this initiative is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, and create a more fiscally sustainable model for schools. The Diocese will partner with the Marianists, who have two centuries of Catholic educational commitment and expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization Officer and to spearhead this effort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will seek feedback and ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, including our parishioners. We value your input,

so please share your thoughts. Please visit the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningstarinitiative.org .
