Dear Brothers and Sisters,It is so exciting that we have a Grouping that not only has great Religious Education Programs and School, but also one that is so alive that each year we have a large number of RCIA candidates. That makes this a very busy and exciting time of the year. Not only are we preparing teenagers to complete the Sacraments of Initiation, but we are also preparing adults to come into full Communion with the Church. The two groups are wonderful and spirited in different ways. One thing we emphasize with RCIA candidates is the definition of a Sacrament. Every class we ask them and they repeat, “A Sacrament is an outward sign, instituted by Christ, to give Grace.” It is an important definition. The other day, I was interviewing some of our Confirmation candidates. They learn a lot of things during the year. One concept we emphasize with them is the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. They have all gotten good at knowing the seven Gifts, but when I asked them to define a Sacrament, I got a lot of “uhh….umm.” Could you define a Sacrament if I put you on the spot? Some of you could, I’m sure, but I bet I’d also hear some of those “uhh...umms”!

A key to understanding what Sacraments are is found in today’s Second Reading, “...hope does not disappoint.” What does Hope have to do with Sacraments? Everything. You see Hope means that you believe that God can do it! That God is trustworthy! Hope means that you have Faith in God. The reason that this is so key to Sacraments is that in truth, God is the one doing the work, bringing the Grace. Believing this unlocks the power of the Sacrament! So Hope is an important word for us this week.Along with Hope, there is another important word for us this week, thirst. In the First Reading and the Gospel, people are thirsty. Israel is thirsty from travelling through the desert and Jesus is thirsty in the Gospel. St. Therese the Little Flower says that in this Gospel passage, Jesus was thirsty for the love of the person He met at the well. He was thirsty for her to believe, for her to let Him save her. In the same way, Jesus is thirsty for us. He thirsts for us to believe in Him, to Hope in Him, to trust in Him. Jesus is thirsty for you! Why won’t you give Him a drink?I can think of two reasons we won’t do that. First, we don’t understand that we need Jesus, that He, not us, is the savior, the doer, the giver of Grace. And, we don’t believe that He would want us. But He does. The person Jesus met at the well had three reasons why Jesus shouldn’t have even talked to her. One, she was a woman. Two, she was a Samaritan, the enemy of Israel. And lastly, she had not lived a very virtuous life. But Jesus talks to her! Because He thirsts for her faith, her trust, her hope in Him. Wouldn’t Jesus want to talk to you? He does! Will you quench His thirst? Will you let Him drink you up? Will you have faith in Him? Will you trust in Him? Will you hope in Him? If you do, you quench His thirst AND you unlock the power of the Sacraments! You unlock the greatest power in the universe, if you let Him drink. Will you?Peace and Love,Fr. Matt

You may be wondering why we have not “kicked-off” our 2020 Parish Share Campaign and ended the 2019 Campaign. Due to a later than normal receipt of assessment totals from the Diocese of Pittsburgh, our information to Our Sunday Visitor was delayed. Therefore, YOU the parishioner, may not have received your Parish Share information packet in the mail. Our Sunday Visitor determined that everyone should receive their PSP mailing by mid-week (March 18), including pledge cards. Once pledge cards are received, the 2020 PSP Campaign begins. If necessary, adjustments will be made, and 2019 totals will be published in the bulletin. Questions? Call the office at 724-445-3713 ext. 5. Thank you for your generous support of our PSP Campaign.

Sarris Easter Candy FundraiserSt. Joseph Church is selling Sarris Easter Candy to support the purchase of steel entrance doors for DePaul Hall. The doors in place now are in poor shape. Let’s come together as a Church family and make everyone’s Easter a little bit sweeter! Sarris Candy is an amazing product that basically sells itself. Take an order form from the vestibule and sell, sell, sell. Orders are due on Sunday, March 29, and can be placed in the offertory or dropped at Parish Offices. Candy will be in SJP DePaul Hall for pick-up on Sunday, April 5, after 9:30am Mass. Questions? Call the office at 724-445-3713 ext. 5.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays at 7:00pm - ALL Parishes

All three Parishes pray Stations of the Cross, Fridays at 7:00pm through Lent. The 14 Stations of the Cross represent events from Jesus’ passion and Death. At each station, we reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’ suffering, Death, and Resurrection. Sta-tions can be prayed anytime, but since it is associated with Lent, communal prayer is offered at many Parishes during Lent. Praying Stations lasts only about half an hour - JOIN US!

Second Offertory in MarchNext weekend, all Parishes will participate in offertory for Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), the national anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops.

”Light is On” ConfessionsWednesday, April 1, 6:00-9:00pm at MD, our Grouping will have one of several Lenten confession opportunities. This is the Diocesan-wide night for confession.

Health Precautions from the BishopBecause of the present health situation with coronavirus, Bishop David A. Zubik has issued the following directives: • Distribution of the Precious Blood

during the Eucharist is temporarily suspended.

• The exchange of the Sign of Peace through physical contact (typically a

handshake) is temporarily suspended. • Those who feel ill are not obligated to

attend Sunday Mass, and should stay home until they are well.

K of C Challenge: 40 Cans for LentDuring Lent, the Knights of Columbus extend a challenge to Parishioners with 40 CANS FOR LENT. This program con-nects traditional Lenten almsgiving with the nutritional needs of families in the Butler Area. Just 40 cans - one for each day of Lent, and one extra can on Easter Sunday. Donations can be any healthy nonperishable, not just canned items.

School & Religious Education

This week’s Virtue is: Sacrifice

Sacrifice is the willingness to offer something up to God, or dispose of

one’s goods or service in charity and kindness

for the good of another.

The Third Sunday of Lent Page 7

Reference: Prayer Over the Gifts May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands

for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all His Holy Church.

The Prayer Over the Gifts is preceded by a prayer in which the priest-celebrant asks those present to pray that the sacrifice about to be offered will be acceptable to God the Father. This prayer came into the Mass in the 9th century and originally was addressed, not to the people, but to the clergy present in the sanctuary. In the early twentieth century, as part of the Liturgi-cal Movement, the response to this prayer became one of the acclamations of the people, as the growing understanding that the Sacrifice at Mass belonged to all the baptized, not only to the priest-celebrant. The wording makes clear the theological truth that there is only one sacrifice, and that that sacrifice belongs to the priest and the people. The response of the people, [made after they rise, since all responses to a prayer of the priest are made standing] makes clear that, while the sacrifice is that of priest and people, it is offered at the hands of the priest who stands in the person of Christ. This prayer, prayed as we move toward the Eucharistic Prayer, reinforces the truth that the sacrifice is offered to the praise and glory of the Father, for the salvation of all present and for the entire holy Church.

Experience Hope Purpose Joy... in a way you never thought possible Saturday March 28 6:00-10:00pm STAGE AE Pittsburgh Sponsored by Diocese of Pittsburgh

The mission of ARISE and the Unaltered Tour is to inspire and equip a generation

to experience the fullness of life through the power of the Gospel.

We believe that there is a way that God designed life to work that leads to human

flourishing. We were created through HIM and for HIM, but when we alter that,

things get complicated and messy. We were created to live unaltered.
