Term 1,ǀ Week 7

Tēnā Koutou Katoa We are over the half-way mark for this term. It is now a good time to have a conversation with your child about how their learning is tracking. At this week’s assembly, I talked to students about taking ownership of their learning. And asked them to think about what steps they are taking in and out of the classroom to reach their goals. Are they reaching their Personal Excellence? What can they perhaps do differently? Setting goals is important, otherwise we drift through life - encourage your child to set a goal for themselves. This could be in a subject, in a class or an endorsement at the senior level. Students have been busy participating in many events over the last couple of weeks. Thank you to parents and staff for supporting our children in their endeavours. With sadness I have received Mrs Jeannie McCullum’s resignation. She will be leaving us at the end of term to take some time for herself and possibly some more study. We wish her all the best. Mr Henry Smith left us on Friday as he is moving to Kaitaia for his new job. We also wish him well. Taking his place is James from EIT who will fill in for Mr Smith’s senior classes until the end of term. We have re-advertised this position. Please ensure that your child leaves home in the correct school uniform. We do have a school jersey if students are feeling the cold. There is to be no wearing of non-regulation school uniform. We are encouraging students to wear their uniform with pride.

MY SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE – FEBRUARY 2018

The Spirit of Adventure was an amazing opportunity I was fortunate enough to

experience thanks to the Wairoa College Board of Trustees. My experience consisted of

10 days on a large sailing vessel, in the Gulf Harbour, learning to sail with 38 other

teenagers from all around New Zealand and also, a few international students.

During the voyage I was consistently pushed out of my comfort zone, with minimum sleep, no personal

space, (literally sleeping on top of each other) and no idea how to sail. This stripped me back to my

rawest of self, which made me think of bigger picture outcomes and enabled me to understand myself

so much better. “Your understanding of your inner self holds the meaning of your life” (Leo Tolstoy).

I learnt how I actually deal with pressure situations and how I really deal with people and what values

and skills I have and also the ones I need to work on. I made lifelong friends that helped me grow as a

person and hopefully I contributed to their personal growth as well. I found it quite amazing that the Spirit

of Adventure used the foreign concept of sailing for teenagers from all walks of life to bond over, as you

had to have teamwork, comradery and understand about each other’s strengths and weaknesses to

make the most effective team for the job. I got to visit many new shores and bays and islands as you

can see in my basic log but I particularly enjoyed Great Barrier Island.

There were so many memorable experiences within the Spirit beyond explanation, that you had to be

there to appreciate but hopefully some of you reading this will get to experience something similar but

your own unique spirit experience. Overall the Spirit was the best experience of my life which I will

always remember and cherish. I strongly advise The Spirit of Adventure to everyone, but just know you

won’t be as cool as my voyage, 753.

Ashore to stretch the legs and play some games skills, ready for trainee day tomorrow. at Kaikoura Island, then we set sail for 04 MAR 2018 @ 17:00pm Whangaparapara Harbour. Trainee day was wonderful! Good weather 28 FEB 2018 @ 16:00pm and great effort by all.

Ashore again today for a walk through the beautiful bush on Great Barrier Island to the hot pools.

Wairoa District Swimming Sports

On Monday 12 March five of our Year 7/8 students were selected to compete in the Wairoa District Swim Sports at the Community Centre. Most of the girls swam in every event and qualified for the finals in every category. N3 Inquiry Class

The students of Lynda Wilson’s N3 Inquiry class have been studying what happens in Tsunami, Earthquake and Floods. What would they do to be able to look after eating and keeping clean when preparing food. They have been imagining what would happen if they went home at 3pm the day a quake happened there was no power for 3 days. No running water. What could they eat the first night for a meal. They decided the eggs, bread and milk needed to be used up. French Toast - cooked on the BBQ. N3 Inquiry Class Emergency Recipe-- French Toast 4 people - 4 eggs, 8 bread and 3/4 cup milk. 3 people - 3 eggs, 6 bread and 3/4 cup milk. 2 people - 2 eggs, 4 bread and 1/2 cup milk. Dip the bread into the mixture and quickly put it in the frying pan and cook till just brown. Do not leave it in the mixture too long as bread will be soggy. Toppings-- Homemade Maple Syrup, Jam, Golden Syrup Recipe for Maple Syrup 3 cups of brown sugar ADD a little water to just make it combine. Bring to the boil and simmer 5 minutes on low. Take off the stove and add 2 Teaspoons Vanilla essence. Store when cool in a glass container in the fridge.

Driving Programmes

Restricted driving lessons resume next week. Any student who has had their learners for at least 4 months is eligible and driving instruction is provided free of charge to students. Introduction to Radio Announcing (Taster Course)

Tuesday, MAR 27th 2018 AND Tuesday, OCT 23rd 2018

9:30am – 3:00pm (30 min lunch at 12:30pm)

NZSOR Campus, Level 1, 30 Grey St, Tauranga

$69.00 (GST incl.) per person

Course Content:

You will learn the basics of Radio announcing; how to prepare and execute a basic voice break on-air; how

to operate the on-air studio desk, and you will actually go on-air on THE RIFF & 88.1 XFM - which

broadcasts throughout Tauranga. You’ll also learn how to voice a Radio Commercial and mix together a

music montage in the recording studio.

This 1 day course is designed to show you what’s ‘involved’ with being a radio Announcer and Production

Engineer and what it feels like to be behind a microphone ‘LIVE’ on-air!

Careers

A number of careers related events are being planned for the coming months. Planning is well under way

for all five events.

1. The Whakapiki Ake Team from the University of Auckland will be visiting Wairoa College very soon

this term to talk to Year 12 and 13 Maori students who have expressed an interest either of the two

programmes below.

1. MASH (Māori Achieving Success in Health) Year 12 exposure to Auckland Hospital and Auckland

University and role models (4 day programme)

2. COACH (Creating Opportunities in a Career in Health) Year 13 preparation programme for a Faculty

of Medical Health Sciences programme, University of Auckland and living in Auckland.

These programmes focus on exposure to health careers, academic support, exposure to Auckland city and

University. Whakapiki Ake pays for transport, accommodation and activities. It is based at the Waipapa

Marae, on the Auckland University city campus.

At Year 12 and 13 Whakapiki Ake are focused on rangatahi who are (potentially) interested in a career in

health and taking ideally two science based subjects, Maths and an English rich subject (English, History,

Geography). Interested Year 12 and 13 students have registered their interest with Mr Body in advance of

the visit. Whanau can also expect a contact from the Whakapiki Ake Team as well.

Keep a lookout for confirmation of the date, time and venue of this visit. Parents are welcome to attend.

2. Massey University Recruitment Adviser, Eugene Hepi, will be making his first visit for 2018 on 5 April.

He will present general information about university study including university terminology, how degrees are

structured, and accommodation and university life in general. His presentation will also cover fees, student

loans and student allowance as well as some tips on budgeting for university study. Parents of Year 12

and 13 students are also welcome to attend this presentation which will be held in Te Aka Matua.

3. Tairawhiti Careers Expo is on the 10 April at the Gisborne Events Centre (Show Grounds). This

event is open to Year 12 and 13 students. Any student in either of these two year levels who is interested

in attending the Expo needs to register with Ms Hayward in T9.

4. The AUT Liaison Adviser will be visiting Wairoa College on 12 April to talk to Year 13 students who

may be interested in studying there in 2019. He will meet with interested students in the T Block meeting

room.

5. Programme Incubator planning is under way. This is an enhanced Careers in Health programme

delivered by the Hawks Bay District Health Board for Year 12 and 13 students who are interested in any

health related career from nursing, midwifery, laboratory technician, doctor, radiographer, social worker, IT

technician, medical secretary etc. Students attend 3 two hour sessions at the Hastings Soldiers’ Memorial

Hospital where they will be presented to by a number of health professionals who work in the hospital.

Students have the opportunity to talk with these people, ask questions and also engage in some fun

activities using equipment that these professionals sometimes use in their work. Students need to register

their interest with the Guidance Counsellor, Mr Body. The first session is on 23 May.
