Second Sunday of Lent Blessed Sacrament March 12, 2017
Who is my neighbor? Who is my neighbor? Pope Francis, in a letter to those attending the World Meeting of Pop-ular Movements, in Modesto, Feb. 16-19 said this: "Do not classify others in order to see who is a neigh-bor and who is not. You can become neighbor to whomever you meet in need, and you will do so if you have compassion in your heart . . . You must be-come a Samaritan." The pope’s message was forceful, direct and amazingly apropos of our time. He said, "I am speaking of a social and political process that flourishes in many parts of the world and poses a grave danger for humanity." He insisted that today there exists a "the grave danger ... to disown our neighbors. When we do so, we deny their humanity and our own humanity without realizing it; we deny ourselves, and we deny the most important Com-mandments of Jesus." "No people is criminal and no religion is terrorist. . . But all peoples and religions include some violent fundamentalists, and with intol-erant generalizations they become stronger because they feed on hate and xenophobia." The pope also said we shouldn’t be overcome by fear of the current crises incurred through “an economy of exclusion and societal indifference”. But we should rather act in response to these "signs of the times." He said, "Sooner or later, the moral blindness of this indifference comes to light . . . . The unemployment is real, the violence is real, the corruption is real, the identity crisis is real, the gutting of democracies is real.” He also warned of an insidious deception that undergirds the crisis-- “the same power that spawned this state of affairs sets about manipulating fear, inse-curity, quarrels, and even people's justified indigna-tion, in order to shift the responsibility for all these ills onto a 'non-neighbor.' "

Readings for the Week
CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?
The Old Testament reading and the Gospel provide two examples of God speaking in plain words that God's listeners can understand. In Genesis, Abram hears God tell him to leave his family's land. God makes majestic declarations about Abram's future and promises to lead him to a new home. Without com-ment, Abram picks up and goes "as the LORD directed him." God speaks; Abram listens and obeys. In the Gospel, God's voice booms from a shining cloud: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." Peter, James, and John hear God's words loud and clear, and the experience over-whelms them. But how often do we hear God's voice so distinctly? While we admire the religious experiences of Abram and of Jesus' disciples, we might be tempted to think that they have it easy. We imagine that we too would obey God's direct orders, if only we could hear them as unmistakably as Abram did. We suspect it would be irresistible to live as modern disciples if glowing clouds hovered above our heads and revealed divine truths. Saint Paul's Letter to Timothy proposes another way.
THIS IS HOW I LOVE YOU
Saint Paul reminds us that God has "saved us and called us to a holy life." God never forgets about us, but knew before the creation of the world exactly when, where, and how we would live out our faith. God's wondrous plan includes visions and voices for some. For the rest of us, we rely on the Word of God and its witnesses who testify that Jesus truly lived on earth among us and sacrificed his life for our salvation. Jesus and his Church are all the revelation we need. We draw close to him in word and sacrament, in pray-er, in service to others, and in countless acts of sacrifice each day this Lent. We ask the Lord to help us trust, with all our hearts, that God will always pro-vide exactly what we need. If we are faithful to our prayer this Lent, God will speak to us--even if not through a cloud.

Daily Prayer for Our Priests
O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux
