Liturgy and Lifeby Tim McManus, Pastoral Associate of Worship
1st Sunday of Lent - March 1, 2020
In this technological age it should be safe to say that there are two crucial functions included on all electronic gadgets and apps that most of us use on a daily basis. Without these functions our lives would be miserable. Those life changing, can’t-live-without-’em functions are “mute” and “reset.” Mute gives us control over what we hear, for good or for bad. Reset puts everything back to normal after we’ve rendered our gizmos whacked and inoperable.
Jesus didn’t carry a mobile phone, but he did have his own mute function: The Word of God. He uses it in today’s Gospel to refute the devil who tempts him three times. Each time the devil manipulates scripture as a way to tempt him, Jesus uses the Word of God to mute him. Eventually the devil goes away for the time being. Jesus did not need a reset function, but we do.
The first reading today is the story from Genesis of original sin. Adam and Eve, tempted by the devil, disobey God by eating the forbidden fruit. This act of disobedience has disordered humanity since then. And we have all paid the price of sin as a consequence. But we have a reset function: Jesus Christ. He restores and resets our lives, but only if we let him.
Lent is that opportunity to push the reset button of faith, and allow Jesus to restore ourselves to life. How do we reset during this Lent? As we heard from Jesus on Ash Wednesday, through almsgiving, fasting, and prayer.
Mute and reset are not recent inventions. These functions have been there for all time.

DIOCESAN & COMMUNITY EVENTS
Thank You!Dear St Alphonsus Church,
Thank you for your donation of
2,301 pounds of food, which is
worth $5,867.55. This will
definitely make a difference to
many families in Boone County
facing food insecurity. The Caring
Center serviced 343 families with
holiday meals and 117 teens
received gifts.
Many things bring people to the Caring Center. Some
donate, others volunteer, and many come in the need of
services. Every day is different, and we never know what
will be next. We are excited that our food pantry now has
more storage capabilities with our new layout and shelving
units. Improved lighting and open space allow us to serve
our neighbors better than ever before as we prepare to
distribute over 20 thousand pounds of food to food insecure
families in Bonne County every month.
Visit us at www.thecaringcenter.net or on Facebook at The
Caring Center to see all that is going on with us in the
upcoming months.
We could not reach the community like we do without you.
We, and those we serve, thank you again for your
generosity!
Sincerely,
Theresa Hanners
Perpetual Prayer
As we continue to live out the
Uniting in Heart 2030 Pastoral
Plan we must raise up these
efforts to the Lord in prayer,
asking for the Holy Spirit to
descend on our diocese and
provide us with the gifts and
graces we need to succeed. Only through his support, and
with the aid of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints, will
our desire to be more faithful, more welcoming, more
collaborative, and more merciful come to fruition.
In the coming weeks the Office of Parish Ministries,
Services and Catechesis will offer the faithful of the diocese
an opportunity to engage in prayer for the success of the
pastoral plan by committing to a Holy Hour every week.
A Holy Hour is time spent with the Lord, experiencing his
loving presence and bringing our prayers and praises before
him. The goal, inspired by parishioners who wanted spiritual
means to support the plan, is that every hour, night or day,
someone in the diocese will be praying for the intentions and
goals of the Uniting in Heart 2030 plan.
To sign up or to find more information on how to pray a
Holy Hour, visit www.dol-in.org/UnitingInHeartPrayers.
You will also find additional resources at this link.
