A special way to remember a loved one is to donate the monthly
Altar Bread and/or Wine in honor of their memory. You may
also choose to remember a loved one by donating a weekly
Sanctuary Lamp in either the Church or the Chapel. Sanctuary
Lamps burn day and night to illuminate the Blessed Sacrament,
serve as an emblem of Christ's abiding love, and as a reminder
to the faithful to respond with loving adoration in return.
The Altar Bread for March is donated in loving memory of
Dorothea E. Brady (Her Loving Daughter)
The Altar Wine for March is donated in loving memory of
Kim N. Dunn (Patrick Dunn)
The Sanctuary Lamp in the Church this week is donated for
Father William Giblin (Holy Rosary Parish)
The Sanctuary Lamp in the Chapel this week is donated for
Richard Ramos (Holy Rosary Parish)

A Message From Father Jose
As you probably recall, the Parish Annual Financial Report that I distributed two weeks ago shows that our parish needs a lot of fi-
nancial support at this time. I take this opportunity to encourage everyone to make an effort to support our parish needs by means of
your weekly Sunday contributions. I would like to encourage families that are not registered to register and be a part of our parish
family. Being a registered parishioner is necessary if you or your family needs authenticating certificates for baptism or confirmation
sponsorship, or to arrange for a baptism or wedding at our Church. To register, simply call the Parish Center or talk to me after the
Mass. God bless you! ~~ Father Jose
From the Diary of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska
"The barque [boat] of my life sails along,
Amid darkness and shadows of night.
And I see no shore:
I am sailing the high seas.
The slightest storm would drown me,
Engulfing my boat in the swirling depths,
If You yourself did not watch over me O God,
At every instant and moment of my life.
Amid the roaring waves,
I sail peacefully, trustingly,
And gaze like a child into the distance without fear,
Because You, O Jesus, are my Light.
Dread and terror is all about me,
But within my soul is peace more profound than the depths of the sea,
For he who is with You, O Lord, will not perish
Of this Your love assures me, O God.
Thought a host of dangers surround me,
None of them do I fear, for I fix my gaze on the starry sky,
And I said along bravely and merrily,
As becomes a pure heart.
And if the ship of my life sails so peacefully,
This is due to but one thing above all:
You are my helmsman, O God.
This I confess with utmost humility."
The value of persistent prayer is not that God will hear us, but
that we will finally hear God. —William McGill
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — The man and the woman ate the fruit of the
one tree that God had told them to avoid, and their shame over-
took them (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7).
Psalm — Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned (Psalm 51).
Second Reading — Death reigned from Adam to Moses, but
now grace and life abound in Christ Jesus (Romans 5:12-19 [12,
17-19]).
Gospel — Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and there
he fasted for forty days and forty nights (Matthew 4:1-11).

The Word of God Works of Charity
“It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him
alone shall you serve.” Matthew 4:10
Tempted between the riches and power of this world and ser-
vice to God, Jesus chose service to His Father. If we wish to
truly follow Jesus, we, too, must decide to turn away from
worldly power and riches and put God at the center of our
lives. Lent is our time to prune ourselves of earthly things.
Ask God how He is calling you to serve.

SAINT KATHARINE DREXEL (1858-1955)
March 3
Born into Philadelphia society,
Katharine was an infant when she lost
her mother. Her father remarried and the
couple taught their daughters that their
wealth was a “gift on loan” to be shared
with the poor, whom they fed and cared
for in their home. Invited by priest
friends to witness firsthand the destitu-
tion on Native American reservations,
Katharine resolved to devote her inher-
itance to this apostolate and enter a con-
templative order. When, however, in
private audience, she begged Leo XIII to send missionaries to
staff the schools she was building, the pope replied, “My child,
why not become a missionary yourself?” Katharine renounced a
twenty-million-dollar fortune and founded the Sisters of the
Blessed Sacrament, adoring Christ present in the Eucharist and
ministering to Christ suffering in victims of racial discrimination.
Her Sisters established over sixty schools nationwide, including
Xavier University, New Orleans, the first dedicated to profession-
al education for African Americans. In 2000, John Paul II canon-
ized “Mother Drexel,” praising her “excellent example of practi-
cal charity and generous solidarity with the less fortunate, long
the distinguishing mark of American Catholics.”
STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION
The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a
Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert
by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of
the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first
temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight.
The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that
temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as
well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is
drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like
God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s diffi-
cult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this sea-
son of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on
the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one
another for strength against temptation.
Temptation
Every conquered temptation represents a new fund of moral energy.
Every trial endured and weathered in the right spirit makes a soul
nobler and stronger than it was before.
—William Butler Yeats
Lenten Prayer for Sundays during Lent
Heavenly Father,
As I enter another week of my Lenten journey, guide me
to the path that leads to you.
Fill my heart with gratitude,
patience, strength, and peace
as I strive to become the-best
-version-of-myself, honestly
admitting my shortcomings
and sins.
As I renew my resolve each
day to become a better per-
son, let me hear your voice
in the deepest reaches of my
heart. Give me rest in you.
Help me to accept others,
showing them your great
love instead of casting judg-
ment.
Stay with me through the busy days this week and re-
mind me that when I need comfort, solitude, wisdom, or
guidance, I can always turn to you.
Help me develop discipline and generosity through fast-
ing and almsgiving, and come closer to you through
prayer this Lent.
In your name I pray,
Amen

A Student Prayer
Thank you, God, for giving me a mind that
can know and a heart that can love.
Help me to stay focused on my studies, and
encourage me when learning is difficult
that I may grasp the truth that is held out
before me.
Grant me the grace to put my knowledge to
use in building the kingdom of God on
earth that I may find the courage to follow
Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
