The Woman’s Club of Zephyrhills recently had the pleasure of hearing from Larnelle Scott, Community Outreach Coordinator State of Florida, for the Pasco Guardian ad Litem Pro-gram. Scott gave an overview of the GAL pro-gram, and information about how to volunteer.

Many children in Pasco County are in need of this very important program. The woman’s club donated 10 birthday bags, containing ev-erything a GAL would need to give a part to a child in the program.

On Feb. 15 approximately 120 residents came to the commu-nity center to enjoy a taco bowl dinner that was hosted by Mar-garet and Andy Castonguay plus Rachel and Ron Gamache. The Gamaches worked side by side with the Castonguays as they will be taking over hosting this great function. In the past few years, Margaret used to make the shells from scratch but now she was teaching Ron how to make them and the two made all that were needed. The entire dinner consisted of meat, and top-pings such as diced tomatoes, cheese, lettuce, salsa, sour cream, olives and onions. All of the above mentioned toppings were placed on a table, so you could add them according to your taste. Before tables were called for dinner, Vivian Sturdevant said

the grace while a moment of silence was observed. The helpers that were there and helped to make the dinner run smoothly and efficiently were Ron and Joyce Bell, the Gamaches, Fred and Pat Mengel (who sold the tick-ets plus helped in the kitchen), Bill King plus the Cas-tonguays. All the people who attended had a marvelous time and a good meal. Two days later, Feb. 17, the monthly pancake break-fast was held in the Grand Horizons’ community cen-ter and 81 residents attended the breakfast. The pancake breakfast was hosted by Mary and Dave Heim. Before tables were called, Jim Leitzke said the grace while peo-ple in attendance bowed their head in prayer. The break-fast consisted of pancakes, French toast, sausage, orange juice and coffee. This was all you can eat. There were helpers in the kitchen and they consisted of Norma and Paul Oi, Rosie Semian, Linda Rogers, Diane Taggart, Chuck Carlson and, of course, the Heim’s. The very next day, Feb. 18, we had an ice cream social held at the community center. There was a crowd in the center and almost all the seats were tak-en. There were over 110 people in attendance. The ice cream social was hosted by Sandy and Al Lindke and Greg Thom-as. They had several help-ers and they all had a specific job to do and everything ran smoothly. The helpers consist-ed of Shirley and Chuck Carl-son, the Castonguays, Chris and Rich Fulton, the Gam-aches, King, the Lindkes and Thomas. There was choc-olate and also vanilla ice cream and you either got one

scoop of each or, if you asked, you got two of whatever flavor you wanted. They had all different kinds of toppings including nuts, cherries, pineapple, bananas, M & M’s, chocolate shots, colored sprinkles, whipped cream, crushed butterfingers, hot fudge and chocolate sauce. Pictures were taken and everyone had a delightful time.

attending school on a regular basis we could revisit the dis-cussion. That was just the mo-tivation he needed and his at-tendance has been great ever since,” Demetriou illuminated with aff ection. “We’ve had at least four sets of parents at our games. Considering the games have been in Lakeland and Tampa, that is quite a hike for them to make. Some of the parents have even off ered to pay for jerseys or at least to pay for printing on shirts,” Demetriou said with school spirit. “Duston Rogers, Alex Gatz, Caleb Green and Bran-don Carlton were instrumen-tal in forming the team,” ex-plained Dunn. “This is the fi rst basketball team we have ever had.” One of the four that gave inspiration to getting the team started is 10th grade Alex Gatz. Gatz spoke with sincer-ity, “My cousin got me started and I have been playing since I was 12. It’s just fun.” Ninth grader, Paul Lang-ley spoke with team spirit, “I like working together as a team.” Tahteona Gordon, an 11th grade student, the only girl on the team, gave similar senti-ments when asked how she feels about being the only girl on the team. She illuminated, “We are like family. We take up for each other.” Another one of the inspi-rational four, Dustin Rogers, has been playing basketball since he was 12 years old. “I played with my brother and sister and when friends came over,” he said with a quiet

smile. Rogers is in the ninth grade. Head coach and physi-cal education teacher, Dash-er, illuminated with humble pride and aff ection for his Li-ons, “It’s all about what brings a smile to the faces of the stu-dents. If it’s a positive en-deavor and makes them work harder for their goals then we should help make their goals a reality.” The dedicated 10-year veteran coach has been teaching at Broach School of Zephyrhills for a year. A senior, and looking for-ward to the next phase in his school career, Anthony Beane spoke with assuredness, “I would like to get an education in sports. Beane said he has been playing basketball since he was a young child. “With the persistent inspi-ration of our students, Deme-triou reached out to a prin-cipal at the Broach School of Tampa and coordinated a bas-ketball game between the two schools. That game took place on Dec. 2, with the Zephyr-hills team coming away with a 32-15 victory,” Dunn ex-plained with a big smile and cheerful tone. “They contin-ued to win. The Lions second game proved to be a continu-ing victory against the Cross-road Schools in Lakeland with a win of 50-25.” During physical edu-cation class the boys would sometimes play basketball. They wanted more basket-ball. They wanted to chal-lenge themselves against other Broach Schools.

back-to-back off ensive rebounds with put-backs to keep the Bulldogs in the game. Antho-ny Antoine got the running game going, fi nd-ing Robbins on a deep pass off a steal. Antoine again made a great pass to Robbins in the lane and Robbins capped it with a dunk. Even with the Bulldogs cold shooting from the fl oor, they only trailed the Sharks by two heading into the second quarter. Antoine and Cartrell Strong began to as-sert themselves in the second quarter. Strong took a steal coast-to-coast to tie the game at 18-18 with 6:30 left in the half. McAfee drained an-other three, his third straight to put the Sharks back on top. McAfee hit another to make it four in a row but the Bulldogs kept fi ghting back, Antoine moving the ball around and Robbins battling in the paint. With two minutes left, the Sharks fi nally missed a three and the Bulldogs pounced. Robbins put an off ensive rebound back and then Donte Marchman turned a steal into a layup on the other end. Robbins com-pleted a three-point play and the Bulldogs out-scored the Sharks 21-13 in the quarter to take a six-point lead into the locker room. The start to the third, however, was disastrous for the Bulldogs. As McAfee heated up and started to drive to the basket, home team sympathy grew and McAfee got the benefi t of having fouls called on his behalf just about every possession. After going on an 11-0 run and taking a 40-35 lead, all the whistles seemed to go the Sharks way as they found themselves in the bonus and later the double bonus. They slowed the game down and just allowed McAfee to dribble around and drive the lane at will. Nearly every eff ort wound up as free throws for McAfee, even a fast break where McAfee crashed into a stationary Robbins, turned into Nature Coast Tech free throws. Finally, Strong scored a clean block on McAfee on a drive to the basket but the damage had been done. A six-point halftime lead turned into a three-point defi cit heading into the fourth quarter. With 5:17 left, Robbins tied the game with a three-point play. The Sharks struck

back with a three pointer from Rivera. Robbins countered with strong moves and baskets inside but the McAfee drives drawing fouls foiled the Bulldogs again. The Bulldogs hung close. A fl oater by Strong put the Bulldogs up by one with 10 seconds left but again the whistles put the Sharks at the free throw line. Free throws put the Sharks up 55-54 with seven seconds left. Then the Sharks stole the ensuing Bulldogs in-bound pass and it was game over. A necessary foul put them on the line again and they were able to slot in the fi nal score of 57-54. “(McAfee) is a great player, made a lot of plays and Nature Coast is a well-organized team,” Bulldog head coach Mike Novak said. “Our kids were resilient, it’s they way they’ve been all season. They weren’t going to leave the fl oor without playing their hearts out.” Robbins, after a sleepy Ridgewood game, lit the place up, especially in the fi rst half. He scored 17 of his team high 23 points in the fi rst half. Robbins also logged six rebounds. “They (Nature Coast Tech) made some adjustments in the second half that tightened up inside,” Novak said. “It gave us the outside shots, we just missed them.” Behind Robbins’ eff ort, Antoine had a big game with 18 points, three steals, two rebounds and an assist. Nature Coast Tech’s McAfee fi nished with 25 points. Orien Adams gobbled up six critical rebounds for the Sharks. The Bulldogs fi nish the season at 20-9.

HOW TO WRITE A GOOD CLASSIFIED ADMake the heading short - a short heading should have 2 to 4 words and will capture the reader’s attention without clutter and confusion.Start your ad with the merchandise you are selling - starting with the merchandise makes it easier for the reader to locate your item(s) for sale.Always include the price of the item you are selling - 52% of classified readers do

not respond to ads that do not include a price.Make it easy for readers to understand - abbreviations and technical terms are sometimes difficult for readers to comprehend.Place yourself in the reader’s position - ask what you would like to know about the merchandise for sale. Include information such as brand names, colors and other

specific descriptions.Always include contact information - including your phone number will give the readers confidence that your item is legitimate and give them the option of contacting you for more information. This information provided as a public service by the Zephyrhills News

dedicated and gifted young people.” Jessica Moraton, a performer herself and mother to Evan Adair, enthusiastically chatted, “I am extremely proud of my son. He puts in a lot of time practicing.” Attending for moral support was Jennifer Deckelman, Adair’s voice coach. Deckelman proudly chatted, “He works hard and tries to do what is asked of him. He is a terrifi c student.” Adair is a second generation for Deckelman. His mother started training under the guid-ing hand of the endearing voice coach when she was in the seventh grade. “His mother still comes to me at times for coaching,” Deckelman explained. The Heritage Arts Center Association, a non-profi t organization in Pasco County, has been supporting the performing and visual arts since 1983. Michelle Vasko, with her daughter Morgan Nothaft, were ready and waiting on deck for Nothaft’s turn at the tryouts. Vasko said with a soft yet motherly tone with pride for her daugh-ter when asked what she enjoys most about her daughter’s performing in the arts, “I like seeing her enjoying what she does.” Nothaft, just 9 years old, chatted with a calm voice as she explained, “I feel excited that everyo ne is seeing me and I enjoy my time on stage.” Nothaft trains at the Sally Blackwood Studio in Dade City. With a team of 15 board of directors and a “Membership of community supporters, they share their vision and contribute annually to that aim,” Friedman continued with sheer en-thusiasm.

Friedman has been a board member of the American Heritage Art Center Association since during the 80s and has held the offi ce of president. She has also been the producer of Spotlight on Talent for many years. The American Heritage Art Center As-sociation contributes to the community in many forms. To name a few the young mem-bers are able to extend their knowledge of the arts through excursions beyond Pasco County boarders. Supporting the Dade City Symphony and the Arts in Motion Children’s Theatre with two events produced each year are two more of their contributions to the community. Two scholarships for $1,000 each are given to two senior students that want to pursue a career in the arts. Moonlight and Ivory concerts are performed from local contributors each year to help fund these scholarships. In its 35th year, Spotlight on Talent also helps to do its share of raising funds. “This is the most popular with talented and ambitious young people and every year upwards of 200 students audition to be in the fi nal two shows. This event is opened to students in surround-ing areas. Many come from as far away as Pinel-las County, Spring Hill, Lakeland, Tampa and more. The young competitors gain valuable expe-rience in auditioning in front of a panel of judg-es with feedback to encourage and enhance these young artists that already hold a barrage of talent. “Many of these contestants that entered year after year have gone on to receive college or art scholarships, have been placed in profes-sional dance companies and have taken careers in the arts,” Friedman refl ected.

SPOTLIGHT ON TALENT: From Page 1B Friedman has been a board member of the American Heritage Art Center Association since during the 80s and has held the offi ce of the American Heritage Art Center Association since during the 80s and has held the offi ce of the American Heritage Art Center Association

The Samaritan Project held its Seventh Annual Samaritan Scramble Golf Tournament. More than 50 players, including councilmen, local police offi cers, and city employees converged on the course at Silverado Golf & Country Club to golf for a great cause. The Samaritan Project’s mission is both simple and complex -

to prevent and alleviate homelessness in the Zephyrhills area. The organization has recently in-creased its eff orts and expanded its range of ser-vices under the direction of Roxxy Geisenheimer who primarily organized this year’s tournament. Geisenheimer, however, credits the event’s success to a dedicated staff of volunteers and supporters, which included generous sponsorships from San Antonio Citizen’s Credit Union, and Senator Wil-ton Simpson’s own Simpson Environmental Ser-vices. Players enjoyed gentle breezes and friendly ca-maraderie on Silverado’s picturesque course. Vol-unteers were surprised to fi nd that they quickly sold out of prize packs, which included a cold bev-erage, contest entries, chance-to-win raffl e tickets, and a mulligan. Afterwards, players were treated to a laid-back barbecue dinner in good company. It turned out to be a great day for golfers and Samaritan alike, as the organization nearly doubled last year’s fundraising eff ort, and the players enjoyed a beautiful day of golf, prizes, and,

of course, bragging rights for the winners. Third place went to JT Morton, Roddy Kight, Kenny Christ and David MacDonald; second place consisted of Kevin Stru-ble, Katherine Walker, Steve Walker and Gary Gordon; and win-ners of the tournament were Mike Thomas, Felipe Garza, Jimmy Brady and Alex Harden.

Take Stock in Children, a need-based scholarship program with the Pasco Education Foundation became recipients of the state Take Stock in Children Gold Level award, the highest achievement within the Take Stock in Children statewide organiza-tion. This achievement is based on various areas of performance as an organization. Achieving this level means Take Stock in Children Pasco has exceeded in all key performance indicators, such as database mainte-nance, timely mentor matching and sessions, student visits and services and meeting recruitment guidelines. This is Take Stock in Children Pasco’s third consecutive year receiving this award. Take Stock in Children, since 1997 has off ered over 650 motivated Pasco County students with a fi nan-cial need the opportunity to receive a college scholarship. Stu-dents are provided a college readiness coach, a mentor along with college and career readiness services. Take Stock in Chil-dren has a 96 percent success with 95 percent of the students be-ing fi rst generation to attend college.

Take Stock in Children, providing scholarships, mentors and hope is a statewide program with the mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through education. To learn more about Take Stock in Children or becoming a mentor or supporter, visit www.takestockpasco.org

THE BOLD ANDTHE BEAUTIFULBill remained unfazed by Sal-ly’s threats. Sheila watched with interest as it quickly be-came evident just how much Ridge hated Bill. Quinn wor-ried when Eric’s health was af-fected by the news of Bill and Steffy’s affair. Pam tried to play cupid for Steffy and Liam. Justin reminded Bill of what would happen if he disowned both Liam and Wyatt. Old feel-ings of jealousy resurfaced for Steffy when Liam mentioned Hope’s name. Quinn prom-ised Wyatt that she would take care of Bill. Ridge was pleased to see Steffy making a special dinner for Liam. Bill unex-pectedly fired a loyal employ-ee who had been working for him for decades. Wait to see: A familiar face returns to town to settle a score.

DAYS OF OUR LIVESVivian and Kate hurled ac-cusations at one another. Eli questioned a new suspect about Andre’s murder. Abi-gail dreamed of Andre, who gave her clues about his kill-er. Claire debated whether she should tell Hope the truth about Rafe’s affair. Vivian’s life was threatened during an un-usual encounter. Gabi confid-ed in Sonny about her fear of going to prison. Valerie ques-tioned Eli’s decision about let-ting JJ raise his child. Later, JJ suggested to Lani that they elope. Stefan and Vivian dis-cussed what really happened the night of Andre’s murder. Chad got closer to the truth. Ciara comforted Tripp about Steve. Brady learned that Mag-gie left Victor and was tempted to come clean with Eve. Hope and Rafe prepared for their big day! Wait to see: Valerie con-fronts Lani over marrying JJ.

GENERAL HOSPITALSonny felt helpless. Ten-sions ran high at the PCPD. Ava gained confidence. Nelle bonded with Joss. Julian suf-fered a big blow. Dante wor-ried about Peter’s intentions. Franco grew more restless. Scott was supportive. Curtis and Drew worked together. Anna had some news for Fe-licia. Franco struggled against his nightmares. Sonny pleaded with Ava. Kiki learned that not everything was as it seemed. Kim became intrigued with Julian. Griffin was happy for Ava. Scott and Kevin put aside their differences. Franco had an epiphany. Jordan was put in a precarious position. Drew looked to Kim for answers. Wait to see: Sonny and Carly come to a decision that affects their family. THE YOUNGAND THE RESTLESSHilary was upset after her meeting with a potential sperm donor did not go well. J.T. was shocked when he learned that Mac was suing him for full cus-tody of their kids. Later, Vic-toria asked Reed for his take on Mac, but Reed didn’t offer up much information. Devon threatened to sue Hilary if she left “GC Buzz.” Jack met with Victoria to discuss a strategy to get Ashley to return to Ja-bot. Hilary received a myste-rious phone call at work and left Mariah to host the show alone. Devon toasted Mariah on a job well done and sug-gested removing Hilary from hosting duties altogether. Vic-toria phoned Mac to see if she would change her mind about custody. Wait to see: Sharon comes to Nick’s rescue.
