Maharashtra was in the forefront of the freedom struggle, and it was here that the Indian National Congress was born. A galaxy of leaders from Mumbai and other cities in Maharashtra led the Congress movement under the guidance of Tilak, and later Mahatma Gandhi. Maharashtra was the home of Gandhiji's movement, while Sevagram was the capital of nationalistic India during the Gandhian era. Located in the north centre of Peninsular India, with the command of the Arabian Sea through its port of Mumbai, Maharash-tra has a remarkable physical homogeneity. The dominant physical trait of the State is its plateau character. Maharashtra is a plateau of plateaus, its western upturned rims rising to form the Sahyadri Range parallel to the sea-coast, and its slopes gently descending towards the east and south-east. Arabian Sea guards the western boundary of Maharashtra, while Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh are on the northern side. Chhattisgarh covers the eastern boundary of the State. Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are on its southern side.

The State has been identified as the country's powerhouse and Mumbai, its capital as the centre point of India's financial and commercial markets. Industrial sector occupies a prominent position in the economy of Maharash-tra. Food products, breweries, tobacco and related products, cotton textiles, textile products, paper and paper products, printing and publishing, rubber, plastic, chemical and chemi-cal products, machinery, electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and transport equipment and parts contribute substantially to the industrial production in the state.

    Currency Symbol

The symbol of Indian Rupee typifies India's international identi-ty for money transactions and economic strength. The Indian Rupee sign is an allegory of Indian ethos. The symbol is an amalgam of Devanagari "Ra" and the Roman Capital "R" with two parallel horizontal stripes running at the top representing the national flag and also the "equal to" sign. The Indian Rupee sign was adopted by the Government of India on 15th July, 2010. The symbol, conceptualized and designed by Udaya Kumar, a post graduate in Design from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, has been chosen from thousands of concept entries received by the Ministry of Finance through an open competition among resident Indian nationals. The process of establishing and implementing this new identity is underway through various digital technology and computer applications.

    The Perfect Groom (Book Review)

    By Sumeetha Manikandan

This book gives a sneak peak into the Tamilian Lifestyle and Culture. From Mylapore to California, the author has shown the readers the true essence of the saying It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages. Effectively using a string of characters with rigid and narrow mindset that lurks around in our society, she brings out the very Indian idea of marriage- that of one marrying the family along with ones spouse- very well. This is a sweet love story and accounts of a young married woman who goes through the torments and pangs of her not-so-perfect mar
