MARC DefinedMARC is the acronym for Machine Readable Catalogue
or Cataloguing.
The term “Machine-readable” means a computer can read and interpret the records and MARC refers to the record syntax, the code, labels and standards required for creating records that can be used in computerized library management systems.
.

Definitions• FieldsFields – Start of field is indicated with a three
digit number from 100 to 999. A Marc field is the entire string of information. Some fields are repeatable; some are not.
• Subfield Subfield is a part of a field.• Marc indicator is a one digit code, which can be
a blank or number that gives the system special instructions. It comes after the field code.
• A subfield subfield delimiter is a special character that tells the system what follows is a subfield. The tags (letters a-z and numerals 0-9) mean different things for different fields.

The first 24 positions are the leader. In this example the leader fills approximately 1/3 of the first line and ends with "4500." Immediately following the leader, the directory begins. Tags are highlighted in green for better understanding. Each individual tag directory is 12 characters long. The first tag is 001. Following each tag, the next four positions show the length of the field. The data in the 001 field (control number) in this record is 20 characters long. The next 5 positions tell the starting point for this field within the data string that follows the directory. The 001 field begins at the 00000 position (the first position is position 0). The next tag is 003, which is 4 characters long and begins at the 20th position (the length of the previous position -- 20 -- added to its starting spot -- 00000 -- equals 20). The next tag is 005. It is 17 characters long and begins at the 24th spot (4 + 20 = 24)

Cataloging Rules
Cataloging rules tell the cataloger the standardized rules for describing items and establishing headings.
Marc rules tell catalogers where to put their work so that computer catalogs can store, retrieve and display the data.
Marc is a standard for representing data in the computer

Types of Records
• Bibliographic records – provide the descriptions, headings, and other bibliographic information.
• Authority records – establish headings and cross references and are used for authority control.
• Holding records – Information about individual items (bar codes, volume numbers, copy information) and in systems which library has the item
![Page 19: Marc21](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022030305/58729b2a1a28ab07208b496b/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Types of Records cont…
• Each of these types of records is required to keep track of each item.
• Not every library provides authority records.• You may never see a holdings record because
many systems add the information to the bibliographic records in their own internally defined fields. Because of lack of standards libraries are beginning to require MARC compatible holdings records.
![Page 20: Marc21](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022030305/58729b2a1a28ab07208b496b/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Reasons for using Marc
• Sharing of records. You don’t have to make original records.
• Sharing of resources. Groups of libraries can make union catalogs. Interlibrary loans are easier.
• Marc is a standard. Library automation systems are designed around Marc standards
• Marc is easy to learn
