October 23, 2015 Dear Marbletown Families: Enjoy this week’s newsletter. If you are on the email list, we also send a copy with additional photos home via email. It you want to change or add an email address so you get the newsletter digitally, please send an email to the office at [email protected]. Include your name, your child’s name and the email address you want to be added to the distribution list. Kindergarten News In ELA the kindergarten students are studying folktales. In Math students are looking for “hidden partners” (e.g. 2 and 3 can be found inside 5). Our kindergarten students are beginning to read! Students are looking at books, often with partners during reading time. The students are doing picture walks with the books and looking at beginning sounds. The teachers differentiate the books to match the students’ current level of mastery in reading. Last Friday, our kindergarten students learned about karate from Rodney Batista, director to Triumph Karate. Mr. Batista was assisted by Deputy Omar’s daughter, who is a high school student and black belt in karate. They taught students some basic defensive moves and emphasized the discipline and restraint it takes to be successful in karate. Mr. Batista has been a frequent visitor to Marbletown since the 1990s. He has a wonderful rapport with students. We hope to have him visit us again. Mr. Batista leads a karate demonstration with kindergarten students (left). 2nd Grade News Second grade students are studying Ancient Asia and India. Mrs. Moone brought in some

traditional garments her stepdad brought back from India. The students had a chance to try them on! The students also looked at pictures of the inside of the Taj Mahal, where Mrs. Moone’s father played his trumpet with a band many years ago. Students also learned about Mahatma Gandhi. Mrs. Moone’s father had the opportunity to meet him in person. Mrs. Moone’s class is looking forward to sharing with Ms. Sahasabudhe’s class, and seeing their treasures as well!

The Rosendale Women’s Club is helping families this holiday season by sponsoring Thanksgiving

baskets for five Marbletown families. If there is enough food received, some families will also receive a basket for Christmas. Please contribute a non-perishable item by November 19th. There will be containers in the lobby of the school. If you have any questions, please contact our school nurse, Marge Gilliland at the school.

Personal Safety Our school counselor, Stacy Bowers, has been visiting kindergarten and 2nd grade classes as she

does every year to talk about personal safety. As part of her presentation, Mrs. Bowers shows the students Chester the Cat, an age appropriate sexual abuse prevention video. Mrs. Bowers emphasizes with students that just as we practice fire drills, we practice personal safety. She reminds students that our body belongs to us and we decide who touches it. She also provides students with strategies to use when they feel unsafe.
