David Briggs SEASHORE: The Morgan Horse Ranch, a longtime breeding, training and educational facility in the Point Reyes National Seashore, is home to only five horses. Its future is unclear.    By Bea Evans02/18/2016

Point Reyes National Seashore staff this week sought to clarify that the predominantly volunteer-run Morgan Horse Ranch behind the Bear Valley Visitor Center would not necessarily close upon the last horse’s death, responding to a Pacific Sun article published last month that stated the ranch would “cease operation once the last horse dies.” Rather, the park said it simply does not have enough funds to pay for new horses or to restart a breeding program that ended in the 1980s, when the herd peaked at around 20 horses, and that a plan for the ranch’s future has yet to be devised. “Closure of the Morgan Horse Ranch is not at all imminent, nor are we discussing that,” said John Dell’Osso, a park spokesman. “We’ve not done any planning for the future of the ranch at this point.” Mr. Dell’Osso stressed that the park would consult with Marin’s equestrian community and Morgan horse advocates to determine a future for the ranch, which now hosts only five horses ranging from 16-year-old Elvis to 25-year-old Huckleberry. The ranch began in the 1970s as a breeding, training and public educational facility for the sturdy workhorse Morgans, which over the years have served as patrol transports, garbage haulers and, last year, marched in the college football Rose Bowl parade in Pasadena.

But at an annual cost of as much as $120,000 for site maintenance, daily care and staff salary, keeping the ranch as a future home for horses may prove infeasible, said the ranch’s manager and only paid staff member, Phil Straub. “What I’ve been told is that the horses we have are the horses we’ve got,” said Mr. Straub, who was quoted often in the Pacific Sun article. “And once they’re gone, that’s kind of it, unless we can find an alternative source of funding.” If history has anything to say, stocking the ranch with new horses seems unlikely; a few years ago, the park declined to accept a donation of three fully trained, prize-winning Morgans, according to Mr. Straub. Even so, many in the equestrian community hope the park will at least consider the possibility of keeping Morgans at the ranch for years to come. “The Morgan Horses are a vital component to managing the visitor population in the park,” said Monte Kruger, the president of the Novato-based Marin Horse Council. “Volunteer-mounted patrol is a great backup to the ranger staff there. We are going to work hard to see that mounted patrol in place.”

Exploring Pt. Reyes Morgan Horse Ranch- A Visitor’s Perspective

March  30th  was  the  perfect  day  for  my  first  visit  in  two  decades    to  Pt.  Reyes.    Our  El  Nino  weather  worked  it’s  magic  on  the  lush  green  grasses  and  plants  making  the  trip  spectacularly  beaueful.    It  was  a  clear,  warm  spring  day  and  a  delight  to  be  in  God’s  country.

The  purpose  of  the  trip  was  to  see  for  myself  the  condieon  of  the  Morgan  Horse  Ranch  at  the  Pt.  Reyes  Naeonal  Seashore.    I  did  not  make  any  official  appointments  to  meet  with  staff.    I  traveled  with  my  sister  (Carol  Wright)  who  has  some  mobility  issues  and  my  best  friend  and  trail  riding  partner  Rhonda  Klarcyk  who  provided  the  transportaeon.    It  was  a  fun  ladies  day  trip  with  a  li5le  Morgan  horse  business  mixed  in.

The  first  stop  was  at  the  beaueful  Informaeon  Center  which  was  mildly  busy  on  a  Wednesday.    Nice  bookstore/giu  shop  and  very  intereseng  exhibits.    Could  spend  more  eme  here  on  future  visits.    Disappoineng  for  me  as  there  was  only  one  sheet  of  black  and  white  paper  with  some  history  and  a  photo  on  the  Morgan  Horse  Ranch.    It  was  behind  the  ranger’s  counter  and  you  had  to  ask  for  it.    It  was  commemoraeng  50  years:  1962-‐2012.    I  did  have  the  honor  of  watching  a  park  ranger  swear  in  a  new  Junior  Park  Ranger,  badge,  oath  and  all.     Stop  number  two  was  the  Morgan  Horse  Ranch.    We  parked  in  the  Handicapped  Parking  spot  provided  just  across  from  the  original  ranch  house  thanks  to  Carol’s  handicapped  placard.    That  was  a  new  feature  at  the  ranch  since  my  last  trip  thanks  to  the  American  Disabiliees  Act.    Sheer  luck  was  with  me  that  day  as  the  first  person  I  met  at  the  ranch  was  the  Ranch  Manager/Horse  Handler,  Mr.  Philip  Straub.    He  was  a  delight  to  meet  in  person  and  made  the  whole  trip  worthwhile.    He  was  accommodaeng,  caring,  a  hard  worker  and  had  a  pleasant  demeanor.    He  is  a  real  asset  to  the  Naeonal  Park  Service  (NPS)  and  the  Morgan  Horse  Ranch,  in  parecular.    Disappoineng  to  me  as  the  staec  displays  needed  a  faceliu  with  lots  of  color  to  show  case  America’s    horse.    To  be  perfectly  honest  they  were  boring  and  there  was  nothing  for  the  children  to  do.

I  witnessed  a  significant  improvement  in  the  condieon  of  the  barn  area  with  a  new  overhang  to  provide  shelter  for  volunteers  to  groom  and  tack  up  the  horses.    Fresh  new  wood  with  bright  barn  red  and  white  paint  cheered  up  the  enere  area  thanks  to  Philip’s  carpenter  skills.    Several  NPS  volunteers  were  busy  at  work  and  had  smiles  on  their  faces  all  wearing  volunteer  tee  shirts.    The  horses  were  all  in  use  out  and  about.    The  “living  exhibit”  was  in  use  but  no  aceon  at  the  ranch    for  visitors,  especially  children.      A  very  friendly  volunteer,  Mr.  Michael  Payne,  who  helps    train  the  volunteers,  agreed  to  a  photo.

Mr.  Straub  was  the  perfect  host  and  offered  to  introduce  us  to  other  staff.    The  fund  raising  organizaeon,  Pt.  Reyes  Naeonal  Seashore  Associaeon  (PRNSA)  is  housed  in  the  original  ranch  house  with  a  fantasec  view.    Mr.  Marc    Matheson,  the  Development  Associate  and  Volunteer  Programs,    gave  us  a  private  tour  of  the  historic  ranch  house  which  I  would  love  to  live  in.    We  met  PRNSA  staff  members,  many  of  which  were  fairly  new  to  their  jobs.    My  main  goal  as  a  PRNSA  member  was  to  clearly  understand  the  relaeonship    between  PRNSA,  the  Naeonal  Park  Service,  and  the  Morgan  Horse  Ranch.    It  was  very  confusing  to  me  on  the  surface.

Impromptu  a5empts  were  made  to  meet  other  public  informaeon  staff  members.    Future  visits  will  include  official  appointments  as  I  become  more  knowledgeable  on  who  is  in  the  decision  making  process.

Philip,  who  is  much  younger  in  person  than  the  Pacific  Sun  arecle/photo  indicated,    joined  three  senior  female  visitors  at  a  local  lunch  spot  where  we  enjoyed  some  good  Mexican  food.    Rhonda  shared  some  of  our  previous  Pt.  Reyes  trail  riding  stories  with  Philip  which  got  a  few  good  laughs.    He  was  feeling  some  personal  discomfort  as  he  rode  20  miles  on  patrol  the  day  before    and  could  relate  to  our  aches  and  pains.    I  hope  the  casual  lunch  seing  eased  any  discomfort  he  might  have  felt  from  being  ambushed  by  three  old  ladies.

Philip  and  Rhonda  were  informally  discussing  his  desire  to  surplus  a  Government  owned  horse  trailer  and  upgrade  two  others.    Rhonda  works  for  the  Defense  Logisecs  Agency  and  just  happens  to  be  a  Property  Manager.    She  provided  him  with  a  name  and  phone  number  of  someone  in  the  Defense  Reuelizaeon  Management  Office  who  could  help  him  with  a  database  that  he  has  access  to  but  is  having  trouble  with.      Good  example  of  two  separate  Federal  organizaeons  working  together  for  a  common  cause.

The  SVMHC  Board  of  Directors    (BOD)  voted  to  establish  a  Pt.  Reyes  Morgan  Horse  Ranch  commi5ee  and  I  and  Phyllis  Shopbell  are  Co-‐Chairs.    We  will  be  making  future  trips  to  the  ranch  as  eme  and  life  allows.    The  following  items  are  my  recommendaeon  to  the  BOD  (based  on  my  visit)  for  further  aceon  on  our  part  to  help  preserve  this  Morgan  history.

RECOMMENDATION  NUMBER  ONE:    Make  an  appointment  with  the  Execueve  Director  of  PRNSA,  Samaria    Jaffe,  and  discuss  what  Morgan  breed  materials  are  available  that  could  be  sold  in  the  bookstores  as  a  fund  raiser  for  the  Morgan  Horse  Ranch.    If  agreeable,  establish  a  small  area  in  the  bookstore  adjacent  to  the  Morgan  Horse  Ranch,    just  for  Morgan  items.    RECOMMENDATION  NUMBER  TWO:    Develop  a  plan  with  PRNSA  to  incorporate  Morgan  horse  materials/educaeonal  literature  in  the  Informaeon  Center  and  possibly  the  other  two  book  stores/informaeon  centers  throughout  the  park.

RECOMMENDATION  NUMBER  THREE:    Make  a  donaeon  specifically  to  the  Morgan  Horse  Ranch  and  track  it  through  the  PRNSA    fund  raising  system  to  the  Ranch  Manager/Horse  Handler.    DONATION  COMPLETE—TRACKING  COMPLETE

RECOMMENDATION  NUMBER  FOUR:    Join  the  list  of  volunteers  that  Philip  supervises  and  commit  to  at  least  one  visit  a  quarter  to  volunteer  at  the  ranch.    DONE—Next  trip  is  scheduled  for  late  June  to  celebrate  my  75th  birthday  at  Pt.  Reyes.

RECOMMENDATION  NUMBER  FIVE:    Prepare  and  donate  Morgan  packets  to  be  given  to  the  Junior  Park  Rangers  along  with  their  official  NPS  badges.

RECOMMENDATION  NUMBER  SIX:    Obtain  permission  from  proper  authoriees  to  set  up  a  table  in  the  covered  ranch  display  area  that  would  contain  free  Morgan  horse  literature  that  would  appeal  to  the  kids.    SVMHC  would  sponsor  that  table  and  material  as  part  of  breed  promoeon.

RECOMMENDATION  NUMBER  SEVEN:    Obtain  permission  from  proper  authoriees  to  set  up  a  podium  with  a  guest  book  in  that  same    covered  display  locaeon  to  capture  an  idea  on  the  number  of  visitors  to  the  “living  exhibit”  at  the  ranch.

The  key  to  the  future  of  the  ranch  is  headcount  of  visitors  and  money  along  with  a  li5le  poliecs.      I  have  a  renewed  interest  in  the  Morgan  Horse  Ranch  auer  my  visit.    Philip  is  an  inspiraeon  and  I  thank  him  for  his  service  as  a  Marine  and  for  his  loving  care  of  the  Morgan  horses.    Stealing  this  phrase  from  the  Marin  Horse  Council—“STAY  TUNED”.

There  will  be  an  arecle  in  the  May/June  emeframe  of  the  Morgan  Horse  magazine  based  on  Brenda  Tippin’s  visit  at  the  ranch  which  I  am  very  interested  in.    Brenda  is  a  Morgan  horse  historian  and  has  wri5en  several  arecles  for  AMHA.
