Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Matthew 5:7

My dear Children, Brothers and Sisters in Christ. Today our Church is celebrating the Feast of the Divine Mercy. The Mercy of God towards humanity is manifested through the actions of Jesus Christ.

The whole of humanity had gone away from God through the original sin, but the mercy of God stopped satan to continue his control over humanity and brings us back to God through Jesus Christ. Out of His mercy and compassion Jesus took our infirmities and our sorrows into His body. Thus, God fulfilled the tenets of justice and the demands of mercy towards humankind.

Divine Mercy Sunday is a blessed feast for all of us who hope to rise and live eternally with the resurrected Christ. God’s Mercy is stronger than His Justice. Those who learns mercy from God changes both themselves and the world in which they live. Through our action, words and prayer, we must become people filled with mercy. While we work for justice and peace; above all we must seek for mercy.

On the cross, mercy prevailed over justice. Christ the Savior broke the dilemma of sin and punishment that kept the sinner from hoping for salvation and finding the way to happiness in eternity.

From Christ’s death on the cross to the end of time, Mercy triumphs over Justice.God’s blessings upon you!

    s cia dis ancin and e rea i y di y resence

The ancient philosopher lato understood philosophy as training for death. That didn’t mean thinking morbid thoughts or giving away one’s earthly possessions. Instead, it meant focusing on what is ultimately important, given the fact that our time here is limited, and none of us is sure what death will bring.

In that sense, this new coronavirus is making all of us into philosophers. We are having to distinguish what is important from what isn’t what is essential from what is accidental. The great unknown, including the threat of an unforeseeable death for ourselves and our loved ones, brings everything else into uestion. Yet our worry testifies to a number of truths.

First, we are all one flesh. A single Adam or Eve figure, in China late last year, contracted this pathogen to which we are all now susceptible. Anybody who has the virus has been near someone who was near someone else, all the way back to someone near the original infected person just a couple of months ago. World travel, having closed the distances between peoples, calls attention to the biological kinship that makes us all vulnerable and that makes nearness and distance so important.

Second, social distancing is inhuman. We are not alien or angelic beings that commune via telepathy. Rather, we are embodied beings. Our flesh is a powerful, irreplaceable means of our e pression. Hugs and handshakes, as well as frowns and smiles, are natural to us. All this distancing is foreign to what we are.Third, familial nearing is an opportunity. As we retreat from the world into our homes, we look across the table into the eyes of our loved ones as if for the first time in uite a while. Familial nearing is the flipside of social distancing. We’re discovering anew the significance of the hearth and the home, as we cook together, play together and withstand trials together.

Fourth, we do not live on bread alone. As we run out of toilet paper and our favorite food items, we might recall that even a satisfied consumer is going to be fundamentally unsatisfied as a human being. During this time of bodily distancing, we would do well to draw near ourselves. ick up and read long, absorbing books. Write thoughtful letters out by hand. Discover the power of words in the service of contemplating the truth about ourselves and our loved ones. Fifth, what we live on is every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. The most unsettling aspect of social distancing is the fact that it keeps us from the reception of the sacraments, especially the Bread of ife. Yet Cardinal Joseph Rat inger years ago wondered about this sort of situation: Do we not often take the reception of the Blessed Sacrament too lightly Might not this kind of spiritual fasting be of service, or even necessary, to deepen and renew our relationship to the Body of Christ et us give voice to our hunger for God so that our prayer now will be touched with the desire that only bodily absence can bring and our ne t reception will be like the welcoming of a long awaited friend.

To be a Christian means to train for death by living, in this life, the immortal life of God. It is by embodying friendship with the one who is the Resurrection and the ife that we will rise on the other side of death, no longer with the mortal body of a arus but with the immortal body of Christ. Social distancing might be the occasion for us to draw ever nearer to these truths of our lives. Source: CNA

    Vicar's Letter to Cathedral Families

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Prayerful Greetings from the Cathedral!

I understand the difficulties you are facing because of the coronavirus epidemic. The worries about your family members here and in India are taking a toll on you. The epidemic created varying degrees of pressure and challenges. I can feel the mixed emotions you are going through. We offer the Holy Qurbana and prayers in the Cathedral every day for you as if you are present at the pews.

We are a people of the resurrection. Our days are not to dwell on Good Friday forever. We know that our Father has an Easter Sunday in store for us. As we experience the struggles of coronavirus, let's meditate on the scourging of our Lordat the pillar. He stood there, seemingly helpless, altogether abandoning himself tothe Will of the Father. Today, we are also helpless while the unseen enemy sprawlsaround us in the form of a virus. Let's abandon ourselves at the hand of the Father. He who assures us in Psalms 23:4 that he will walk close beside me, even when we walkin the valley of death. His rod and staff protect us.

I sincerely appreciate all of you who work in the front line sacrificing your health and the comfort of your family. You are the model of Christian missionary life. You have my assurance that my constant prayers are with you. We will ride through this and will come out with more grace to proclaim Hallelujah to the Risen Lord.

Please vigilantly follow the preventive measures suggested by the government agencies.

Again, I assure you that Father Almighty will not abandon you. I walk by the seats you sit in the Cathedral and pray for you every day. We are God’s children. May this be our consolation and peace.

In the eternal love of the crucified and risen One,

Rev. Fr. Thomas Kadukapillil Vicar, Syro-Malabar Cathedral Chicago, Illinois (908) 235-8449
