CAPABILITY ENHANCEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT SCHEMES

Mar Ivanios College conducts the following capability enhancement schemes for students.

The college offer UGC supported NET coaching for PG students. The classes are run

during the weekends and also after regular class hours on working days. Teachers from the

College itself and experts from outside are handling the programme. UGC funds have not been

received for continuing formal remedial coaching sessions for 2017-18 in spite of sending

audited utilization certificates and it would be difficult to continue with the programme as it is.

But free remedial coaching by teachers for slow learner students continues in 2017-18. A semi-

formal session comes from the instructions given to all Faculty Advisors to do remedial sessions

for all students who appear for the supplementary examinations, especially those who have failed

in the previous attempt. At the UG level advanced students are also supported to take

competitive examinations for admission to national institutes. This has resulted in around 30-50

students in all batches together getting admission in national institutes like the NITs, IITs,

Central universities every year. While INFLIBNET is currently open to all students, advanced

learners were identified and given training in open access e-publishing. Access to research

databases in various on-line sources was taught to advanced learners who shared this knowledge

with their class.The Scholar Support Programme for slow learners is a programme funded by the

State government and has been running very efficiently for the last four years. 150 students of

the college benefited from this remedial programme in 2015-16 (50 each from each year of the

UG programme), 110 students benefited in 2014-15 (from the first and second year batches), and

50 students of the first year benefited in 2013-14. Teachers from the college and experts from

outside handled these sessions. There is also academic and career counseling provided by a

experts from outside as well as by the fulltime counselors employed in the institution. The

Orientation session given to all first semester students in their department, every year, could be

seen as a kind of bridge course, where learning expectations are set for students. Some

departments turn these orientations into bridge sessions. The Journalism department, conduct 2-3

days long bridge course for freshers with five external experts every year. A one-week long

bridge course for newly admitted B A students was conducted in 2016 with five external

experts.On understanding the necessity of up-skilling students in the contemporary globalized

world, many add-on/Certificate courses were designed by the faculty to develop global

competencies, specially keeping in mind the mission of the College. Consequently, the

Academic Programmes Committee organized the courses under three heads, viz., Life Skills

Courses, Professional Skills Courses and Language Skills Courses. As part of this the college

offer courses in Yoga and Meditation, Personal Counselling , Skill development for Differently

abled students and Soft skill development courses.

International Yoga Day Celebrations at Mar Ivanios College Auditorium 2018

The Department of Computer Science honoured young technocrats of B Voc Software

Development( 2014-17 batch) for getting placed in different software firms including multi-

national companies like Tata Consultancy Services(TCS), Wipro and UST Global. More than

15 students from our first batch got placed in various industries. The honoring ceremony was

conducted on 26-02-2018 at 1.30 pm. The programme started with the Welcome Speech by Dr

KL Anandavally (Director, Self-Financing Wing), followed by the Presidential Address by our

beloved Principal Rev. Dr Gigi Thomas.
