BMW: 3, 5 & 7 SERIES – NO START FAULT
BMW E30, E32, E34 and E36 series vehicles all run using an 88 pin Bosch Motronic system. Injectronics have seen these units on numerous occasions presenting with a common no start situation.
When working with these vehicles, if you happen to experience a no start fault Injectronics suggest you check for ignition, injection and fuel pump operation. Once these operations have been checked without success the supplies and earths as well as the crankshaft trigger inputs should also be tested.
Given that the E36 3 series BMW electronic control module is mounted inside the plenum chamber behind the firewall it is a common occurrence for the unit to become water damaged, due to the plenum chamber drain pipes becoming blocked resulting in the water overflow entering the ECM.
Injectronics strongly suggest checking these drain pipes for blockages whenever you are replacing an ECM. The ECM can be accessed in the E36 Series by simply removing the plate on the firewall situated behind the left-hand shocker tower.
Testing:1. When the ignition key is turned on, power is supplied to pin 56. The ECM will then provide an earth at pin 27 for the DME main relay to pull in.
When this relay pulls in, power is then supplied to pin 54 via the contacts of the relay.2. When the engine is running, and the key is turned off, injection and fuel pump stop immediately. After the engine has finally stopped rotating the
ECM will then stop supplying an earth for the main relay on pin 27, therefore the relay will open and stop supplying power to pin 54.
Power Feed Circuit:• Pin 26 – Constant 12v feed from battery• Pin 54 – Power in from DME main relay• Pin 56 – Ignition key power, only has power when key on
Injectronics are the experts in bench testing and repairing customers own electronic control modules and have been doing so for many years with great success for the fault mentioned above. We also carry a wide range of exchange electronic control modules in stock, which are supplied in an unlocked state allowing our customers to plug and play.
