Quilting for a Cause
The Interpersonal Studies Class was busy sewing quilts for the children’s shelter
as a part of the Bright Hopes project. Mrs. Todd and the Greater San Antonio Quilt Guild provided the supplies needed in order for the students to complete the project. Mrs. Duron’s students assembled the quilts by sewing the quilted
top, batting, and backing together.
They finished the quilts by hand tying all the layers
together. These quilts will give comfort to the children in their time of need.

TODAY’S FORECAST…
As a culmination to their science unit about weather, the 4th grade classes were recently visited by Albert Flores, the meteorologist for Channel 4, WOAI. The
students showed off their understanding of various weather topics by answering Mr. Flores’ questions, and were able to ask questions of their own at
the end of the presentation. Topics included tornadoes, hurricanes, the formation of lightning and much more. Afterwards, each 4th grade class had its picture taken with Mr. Flores. He even brought Channel 4’s new Storm Tracker
vehicle.
If you missed the classes on Channel 4, click on the link below to see Mr. Flores mention them on the morning news!

AF Space Camp Program: Air Force (AF) Services Child & Youth Programs is excited to
sponsor the AF Space Camp Program at the US Space and Rocket Center, Huntsville AL
22-27 Jul 12. Youth will experience, imagine and interact through Space Shuttle mission
simulations, tours of the center and the chance to witness first-hand the everyday challenges
faced by astronauts. The camp is an inspiring week of fun and enriching space activities.
This program is open to family members of Active Duty Military assigned to or living on an
AF installation, AF Retired Military, AF Civilian Employees, or activated Air National
Guard or AF Reserve. Scholarships are available for youth, ages 12-18, to participate in the

Academy. Airline or POV travel costs to Huntsville AL are the responsibility of the
attendees or the installation's Youth Programs. All lodging, meals, and activity fees after
arrival at Space Camp are available at no cost to attendees or their installation. Attendees
participate in a wide variety of physical activities, hands-on experiences, and classroom
activities. Interested youth with a minimum GPA of 2.8 complete the electronic fill-in
nomination form and submit it to their installation's Youth Programs by the 2012 deadline.

Battered Women’s Shelter
The Child Development Class at Stacey Junior/Senior High recently studied
domestic violence and child abuse. Upon completing the unit, student participated
in a service project in which they sewed and stuffed personal care kits. The kits were made by using a wash cloth and sewing compartments for the items to be
placed. Students also sewed a ribbon on the end for the kit to be rolled and tied
together. The child development class and FCCLA members made 97 kits that were donated to the Battered Women’s Shelter. Many of the items placed in the
kits were donated by local businesses, and the Lackland PTSO also helped
purchase the supplies needed. The care kits included shampoo, conditioner, a tooth brush, tooth paste, dental floss, lotion, a comb, chapstick, and a soap bar.
Students also had the opportunity to tour the shelter to see how the facility helps
our community. They learned about the intake process, services they provide to women and their children, and career opportunities in the human services career
cluster.
We would not have been able to make the kits without the support of our
community. Thank you to the following businesses and organizations for helping
Stacey students with their service learning project.
