The Team
Why map OER?
● No record of activity by country or local area
● No central register of expertise and/or OER services
● Hard to find OER for local languages/standards
● Encourage collaboration and awareness
● Enable reuse of educational materials
● Support advocacy and policymaking
● Improve communication between different stakeholders
● Mapping provides a universal reference framework
History of the project
● International OER community convened by UNESCO International Institute
for Education Planning in 2006
● Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) first
attempted to map OER in 2005
● D’Antoni mapping discussion exercise (900 people), November 2012
● Other maps: OLnet Evidence Hub, OER Impact Map, POERUP, CORE
Open Access Repository Map
● Hewlett funded Phase 1 prototypes: hbz, ISKME, MIRA
● Phase 2 funding awarded November 2014
What is OER World Map?
● Project funded by The Hewlett Foundation
● Partners: North Rhine-Westphalian Library Service Centre (hbz),
graphthinking GmbH, The Open University (UK), buschfeld.com
● A way for the OER community to develop & share data on itself
● Free and open source software, linked open data (LOD) + API
● OER Data Hub uses open data services to power statistics module for fast,
flexible data import/export
● Mapping as primary form of visualization
● Facilitating self-organisation of the OER movement
Evolution of the Project Vision I (2012)
"The OER World Map will illuminate the scope and nature of the global OER
movement and act as a point of entry for a range of users. Its visualisation will
serve to identify OER initiatives and OER people worldwide to facilitate sharing
resources and connecting people. Built in collaboration, it will engage
contributors and users as ‘co-owners’ to promote comprehensiveness and
sustainability."
Evolution of the Project Vision II (2014)
"The OER Data Hub is a platform which collects and publishes openly into the
web data by, about and for the OER community. The OER World Map is the
first out of many applications build on top of the OER Data Hub, which
visualizes the data in the form of a geographical map and serves as a symbol
of the project.”

Data policy & security● “data sparingness”:
Only collect data you really need!
● no commercial data use planned by OER-WM operators
(despite CC0 licence will generally allow commercial use)
● open source
→ transparent use of data
https://github.com/hbz/oerworldmap
● professional service provider
→ server architecture, firewalls…

OER Impact Map – Data Explorer
OER Impact Map – Data Explorer
There are many ways to contribute!
Membership of the map can act as a focal point for local communities of practice,
supporting the OER ecosystem and its people
● Stakeholders can develop use-cases for the project
● Experts and institutions can network and share experiences
● Repositories, libraries, & data curation projects can contribute and collect data
● Champions can represent and advocate for different parts of the world
● Developers can build useful applications using interface with OER Data Hub

Opportunities for ROER4D
● Leverage the value of the ROER4D network
● Begin the process of visualising / mapping the entire project
● Communicate activity to the wider OER community
● Represent / raise awareness of the Global South
● Potential to link to other indicators relevant to development (e.g.
World Bank indicators)
