Start to My Idea

• My idea was drafted and introduced when I had encountered an individual who is considered to be an SEN student. From here, I heard discussions from teachers talking about the learning difficulties SEN students have and it further interested my view on this topic. From this point, I wanted to explore this subject in further detail. Connecting sport to SEN students wasn’t part of the initial plan however; this element allowed me to make changes and develop my idea.

Factors to changing my Idea?• As my documentary was going to have a more general exploration about why these

students need moral support, I later had a further encounter with a group of students part of LSC where they expressed and argued about how they are not being able to play/exercise their sport. I gained a sense of empathy when I realised that I myself am not able to utilize the schools facilities as much as I’d like to. From here, I found a more narrow aspect to investigate allowing me to focus my idea on how sport affects the lives f these students.

• Another factor after crafting my complete Idea, I delivered a pitch exploring the idea I have chosen t explore. I gained feedback from my audience offering pros and cons to the documentary. Whilst the pros were outweighing the cons, I found the fact of being quite exploitive to these students will be ‘morally’ wrong to do. This is where I further decided to ensure I will focus the idea on them and sport rather than associating it with more academic learning.

• With this, looking further into research, I discovered and acknowledge that carryout our the activity of sports can actually help boost the self-Esteem of young individuals, the fact that sports or physical activity can help the friction between life and studying helped me realise that sports is a good feature to look into since its beneficial to everyone of all ages.

How was the Idea developed.• I developed my idea since pitching the idea. To develop my idea, I

thought changing the title of the documentary will help re-brand it to be more appealing to the audience. The title of the documentary is now ‘Sports and SEN students: The importance of supporting us all’. I believe this title is more related to the topic since I have narrowed the subject. This title relates better with the topic and is now more appealing to the audience.

• With this, the development of the documentary is the narrowing attempt I have taken to my documentary. I have now taken a specified aspect to investigate which can now be more easily identified by my audience. This development to the documentary will allow my target audience to be simplified as it is now a niche audience.

What Factors Shaped My Idea • The secondary research I conducted helped shaped my idea. During my research, I found a

series of artists who would be considered as SEN individuals who had accomplished a lot. This allowed me to connect the idea of SEN students and sports together.

• In addition, during research, came across a number of organisations who are keen to offering sports to those with disabilities. Organisations who take sport seriously allowed me to become aware that my topic is actually a matter of concern. Noticing that there are organisations that are attempting to make a change in students life allowed me to adapt my idea into channelling the aspect of sport and why it plays a role in these students life. Collectively the research proved that sports was important to everyone (all ages, gender, race and disability); this only made it seem that much more important for those students with SEN conditions.

• Looking further into my area, I discovered that children/students were actually more intrigued in the topic more than parents. Through my findings, I discovered parents only necessarily wanted insight in this feature if they had a child who were under these conditions. Although there was a small scale of parental audiences, the majority of the response showed the mass amount of parents didn’t care much about the area of how sport benefits their son/daughter. Due to this I’ve shaped my target audience to be more focused around those who are interested in my topic which is students as they are directly affected with the limitations of playing sport. Secondly, my secondary audience is now schools as they can gain further view from children who may be students of the school itself. This then gives me a bonus tertiary audience of parents who want to know how this topic is run to help those in need.

Additions to shaping the idea• Many people see beneficial upsides to educational if students are

participating in physical activities. They believe sporting activities help getting the child in the college of their choice and help structure a sense of discipline allowing them to remain more focused on their studies. Hearing people believe sports is beneficial allowed me to narrow my documentary further as it should be exploring a a positive topic.

• Whilst sport is commonly utilized by male audiences, research conducted shown that physical activity can also be beneficial to females who actually take a interest in the sports industry. The idea that teen pregnancy can be reduced through the activity of sporting activity allowed me to acknowledge that females can actually benefit from sports and a documentary around the aspect of sports. I believe giving girls an insight into the field may further support the deterrence in limiting teen pregnancy.
