Cuts force group home closureMoms say developmentally delayed residents will suffer from being moved.

Five residents will haveto move when Bramble

Cottage is expected to closeits doors on July 31, but onemother hopes the group, who are like brothers andsisters, will be able to staytogether.

The home for people withdevelopment disabilities hasbeen in existence since theearly 1980s and in its currentlocation for about 10 years.

“The environment herehas been very supportive,”Carol Kleckner said. “Thestaff has been very good tothem.”

Carol’s daughter Stephaniewho lives at Bramble Cot-tage has become much moreindependent living there butisn’t ready to live on her own.Bramble Cottage provides24-hour staffing making it asafe environment for her tolive in.

The Associationfor Community Liv-ing runs BrambleCottage and madet h e d e c i s i o n t oc l o s e t h e h o m e,which means fourstaff members haver e c e i v e d l a y o f fnotices.

“The agency willcontinue to support(the residents). Theservice will just looka little bit different,”said CommunityLiving CEO Danette Kugler. The group home model is onthe wane, Kugler added. It’sthe “homesharing or semi-independent living” that’snow becoming more com-mon now.

“Within that there’s allkinds of different models aswell,” Kugler said. “The per-son could be living in a base-ment suite in a home ownedby the caregiver and the care-giver would just be providingsupport as needed to theindividual. It might be shar-ing an apartment with thecaregiver or it could be livingwith a family and participat-ing in family life. It dependson what people want.”

Carol said she’s worriedif Stephanie moves in with

another family, she’ll regressand become less indepen-dent.

The preliminary plan wasfor Stephanie to move inwith another woman fromBramble Cottage but theywould only have received15 hours of support a week, which Carol didn’t feel wasenough. “For me, it’s not suf-ficient if there were medicalemergencies or something,”Carol said.

The other residents havemade new arrangements butStephanie’s situation is stillup in the air. The residents ofBramble Cottage have beenencouraged to make theirown decisions and go outinto the community givingthem a structured lifestyle,Carol said.

The staff has also helpedthem find employment, savemoney and they’ve gone ontrips to Hawaii, New Zea-land, and camping around

B . C . C u r r e n t l y,they’re saving for atrip to Las Vegas.

Stephanie herselfsaid because she’s30, she doesn’t wantto live at home. Hermother added thatshe deserves to liveher life to the fullestand hopefully oneday she’ll be inde-pendent enough tolive on her own.

Right now, how-ever, Carol worriesabout her safety and

medical problems as well asthe need for her to socializewith other people.

Kugler said the associa-tion hasn’t lost any fundingbut they’re working withCommunity Living B.C. to“redesign the programs andservices that it funds so untilwe’ve reached some agree-ment on where those costsavings will come from ourcontracts won’t be reduceduntil that time.”

“If Bramble closes at theend of July I would antici-pate that our budget wouldbe cut then at the end of Julyto compensate for Brambleclosing,” Kugler said.

Community Living B.C.has a $22 million provincialbudget shortfall.

The Maple Ridge-PittMeadows board of edu-

cation will vote on Wednes-day on its prel iminar y2010/11 budget with a netreduction of $878,101.

The budget cuts will affectnon-classroom teachers, administrators and supportstaff as well as busing servic-es and learning support andsupplies totaling approxi-mately $1.093 million ofwhich at least $253,000resulted from the closure oftwo schools.

However, about $215,000was reallocated to differ-ent areas, for example, theReading Racers programand student safety and anti-vandalism initiatives.

Teacher salaries will bereduced by $267,006.

This includes cuts to workexperience and collegialsupport teaching staff, whowill have their time reducedand reallocated to class-rooms.

The Odyssey programw h i c h s u p p o r t s h o m eschoolers will be reduced by.8 full-time equivalent per-son.

There will be one feweradministrator in the schooldistrict with the budget cuts.

Since Mount Crescentand Riverside elementaryschools are being closed, those administrator posi-tions won’t be needed, butbecause of an increase ofstudents at Maple RidgeElementary, that school willreceive a new vice-principal.

The board is also lookingat small cuts to custodial, clerical and library resourcestaff in the school district to

save $177,047.While money is being put

aside for the Reading Racersprogram for the upcomingyear, last year there were sev-en sections of the program, whereas this year there willonly be three.

Student enrolment isexpected to drop by about250 students this fall, whichreduces the overall revenue.

In addition, increasesin teacher pensions of$760,000, a $65,000 increasefor Medical Services Plan,$530,000 in inflation and$125,000 of Ministry of Edu-cation cash flow changeswere additional cost pres-sures trying to balance thebudget.

The board of educationwill vote on the budget inthree parts in order to avoidany conflicts of interest forthe trustees.

Several B.C. health organi-zations are pushing the Lib-erals to stop talking about a“cosmetic” pesticides ban,and get on with passing one.

Pesticides used to get ridof weeds in lawns and gar-dens are purely cosmetic, but they pose a significanthealth risk, says BarbaraKaminsky, CEO of the Cana-dian Cancer Society for B.C.and Yukon.

“It is time that the gov-ernment did the right thingand protected its residentsfrom an unnecessary cancerrisk,” Kaminsky said, not-ing the Liberal governmenthas been deliberating onthe issue for over two years. The Canadian Cancer Soci-ety and seven other groups,

including the Public HealthAssociation of B.C., say thatB.C. should follow the leadof Ontario, Quebec and NovaScotia in enacting provinciallegislation.

More than 25 municipali-ties in B.C., including Van-couver, Surrey, Richmondand Maple Ridge, alreadyhave bylaws to restrict theuse of lawn and garden pes-ticides.

Dr. Bruce Lanphear of theUniversity of B.C.’s depart-ment of pediatrics saysrepeated exposure to pesti-cides can cause behaviouralproblems in children, suchas attention-deficit hyper-activity disorder, and severalstudies have linked them tonon-Hodgkin lymphoma, childhood leukemia andcancers of brain, lung andprostate.

The trial for Parker ScottMeadows, who is accused ofattempting to kill 35-year-old Kenneth Heathorn lastyear, was adjourned Mondayafter a witness didn’t appearto testify.

The witness had shown upwhen the trial first startedbut was asked to leave whilethe Crown and defence gavetheir opening statements. When he was called backinto the courtroom to testifyhe was nowhere to be found.New Westminster SupremeCourt Justice Peter Leaskissued a material witnesswarrant for him to appear.

“Well that’s a jolly goodbeginning,” said Leask, afterhearing he wasn’t around totestify.

Meadows is accused ofshooting Heathorn in the11700 block of Darby Streeton June 11, 2009. Heathornwas in hospital for threeweeks after the shooting butrecovered.

Crown Prosecutor PeterBenning said Heathorn wasshot the same day he was

released from jail and hesuffered a “sucking chestwound.”

Heathorn was acquitted inJune of various charges relat-ed to a beating and shootingof a 20-year-old man at ahouse party on Nov. 8, 2008in Maple Ridge.

He had been charged withdischarging a firearm withintent to wound, aggravatedassault, use of a firearm incommission of an offence, break and enter and pos-sessing a weapon for a dan-gerous purpose. However,Crown prosecutor JanetDickie said in an interviewwith The TIMES the chargeswere stayed midway throughhis trial because there wasno longer a strong likelihoodof conviction.

The onewho made a statement iden-tified Meadows as the shoot-er. The other woman onlymade a statement recentlyand said she didn’t know

Benning told Leask that heanticipated the first witness, who the warrant went outfor, would say he remem-bered nothing about theevents in question.

Benning said he wanted tomake an application undersection 9 (2) of the criminalcode, which if successfulwould allow him to cross-examine his own witness fortestimony that was inconsis-tent with a prior statement.

Unhappy with right and wrongLike gambling, alcohol, crack

and, according to Tiger, sex, the need to be right oftenbecomes an addiction. It is atyrannical master that onceestablished, allows no question-ing of its authority.

Nowhere is the power of “I’drather be right than happy” moreevident than in the Middle East. There, the Israeli governmentexcuses questionable actions onthe grounds that it is right andthe Palestinians are wrong. At thesame time, Hamas the duly elect-ed government in Gaza continuesto espouse the insane view thatIsrael ought to be wiped out.

Between these two rights thereis little room if any to maneuver. The most popular game in thearea is not soccer; it is intransi-gency and it has been going onfor so long it will soon be con-fused with cricket.

On one side is Israel, concernedfor its security and outraged thatHamas indiscriminately lobsrockets into Israel. According tothe hardliners, that gives Israelthe right to not only blockadeGaza but also to board any aidships bound for Gaza.

On the other side, we have thePalestinians contained in twoareas, the West Bank and Gaza.Their politics are as divided astheir living space. In the WestBank, Fatah is the ruling par-ty while in Gaza, it is Hamas,a group that openly states itshatred of all things Israeli whilerefusing to acknowledge Israel’sright to exist.

This unreasonable need to beright leads to all sorts of nonsense. For example, on the weekend wewere treated to the spectacle ofPrime Minister Benjamin Netan-yahu insisting that all nine of theactivists killed when Israeli com-mandos stormed the aid shipswere “thugs looking for a fight.”

And a spokesman for the Israeligovernment insisted that if Israellets in one aid ship the next one issure to be full of armaments.

At the same time, there’s thedistasteful sight of Hamas mem-bers fairly jumping up and downin glee as they hurl yet moreviolent invective at their Israelineighbours.

Some of my Jewish friendspoint out that much of the criti-cism of Israel is based on anti-Semitism. And often, that isindeed true. However, no amountof undeserved criticism excusesIsrael when it takes dispropor-tionately violent action.

Ditto Muslims. No amount ofinsensitive invective directed atMuslims excuses extremists fromterrorist activity. Nobody gets abye here.

Do all Israelis play the ‘I’malways right game’? Of course not.On my last visit to Israel, I argued

with Jews who believe it is theirright to take over every bit of landmentioned in the Bible and I talk-ed with Jews who openly criticizethe actions of their government.

Currently, the most strikingexample involves a group of topIsraeli Navy reserve officers whoon the weekend publicly calledfor an external probe into thecommando raid.

In a letter to Prime Minis-ter Netanyahu, the officersdenounced the raid, saying it“ended in tragedy both at the mil-itary and diplomatic levels.”

Netanyahu responded by reit-erating his intention of holdingan internal probe.

And do all Palestinians sup-port the extremism of Hamas? Ofcourse not. The majority of Pales-tinians simply want a better lifefor their children.

Between the hard-line Israeligovernment ‘s insistence that itis always right and the equallyobdurate Hamas view, is thereany room for reasonable discus-sion?

It is a question to which nobodyhas the answer. What is obviousis that this intransigence has notand is not working - for anybody,Israeli or Palestinian.

Perhaps when the Israelis andthe Palestinians are ready toconsider that they are both rightsome of the time and wrong someof the time, peace may becomepossible. In other words, it maybe that each side has to acceptthat the other side is right. Andwrong.

Homelessnessas seen throughthe eyes of kids

Imagine that a group of homeless peoplehad shoes thrown at them, along with nastynames and spit.

Would you privately cheer because youare sick of homeless people in Maple Ridge?

Now imagine that those homeless peoplewere actually local Grade 6 and 7 schoolchildren.

Still privately cheering? That’s what happened when a leadership

class at Alouette Elementary held an amaz-ing event last Thursday (See Page 12).

The class was given the task of living a lit-tle like a homeless person for the school day. They had to build their own shelter usingtarps. They were encouraged to refrain fromusing the indoor bathroom. They ate verylittle, doling out meagre rations of crackers.

Then, after a while of living in the shelter, they were forced to leave with little notice.

When a TIMES reporter spoke with thestudents earlier in the day, they were start-ing to get an idea of what it’s like to behomeless. It made them think, but theywere still pretty cheery about the wholeexercise.

In the afternoon, it was a different story. After the school day ended, students

poured out to go home and some came bythe “homeless” students.

What happened next was not set up aspart of the whole exercise. A few studentsapparently thought it would be funny tohurl insults at the “homeless” as well objectssuch as shoes. Some of these “funny” stu-dents even spit at the “homeless” kids.

When The TIMES interviewed the classlate in the day, many of them were devastat-ed. They felt that their exercise had failed.

We don’t agree. While we’re concernedthat some students could be so ignorant, it’snot surprising considering how many adultsact towards local homeless people.

We think the incidents will spur more dis-cussion at the school and will, in the end, result in more compassion towards thehomeless.

We can all learn something from this exer-cise. Homeless people are often mentally illor facing staggering addictions brought onby childhood abuse. They deserve our sup-port and compassion not our vitriol.

Sometimes you just have to walk a mile intheir shoes.

Editor:Re: Mixed reaction to elec-

tion task force, TIMES, June4, 2010

As usual, councillors (inMaple Ridge) find things todebate rather than the realmatters.

We have had all kinds ofpeople run for mayor andcouncil; those with money, and those without so muchand, apart from the left-leaning candidates, manychanges in personnel haveoccurred over the years. Still, very little gets done.

The downtown core isfinally getting some facelifts, but that appears to be it.Everything else is stagnant, and bickering over land useand great offers such as Jack-son Farm and Pelton, givepeople chances to vent theirown private issues and bringchildren out with signs.

As this council and manybefore have lost the shop-ping centre race, and wehave it now convenientlynext door and across theriver, they should be con-centrating on a businessbase for taxes, which meansindustrial land, and build-ings for them to operatefrom.

Do they work on thosethoughts? No, they disputewho can donate, and whocan’t, who can accept, andwho can’t, all things the vot-ers aren’t concerned with,

no matter what Coun. CraigSpeirs believes.

What we are concernedwith is good government, and we seem to have troubleachieving that in this area. Ifcompanies or unions wantto support someone, theyshould check the candi-dates’ credentials a little bet-ter, and get more involved inthe nominating process.

Just being a “no” or “yes”person is not enough to be acouncillor.

Voters needto know whois donatingto campaigns

Editor:Re: Mixed reaction to elec-

tion task force, TIMES, June

4, 2010This is a very important

issue within our democraticsociety and I believe needs tobe debated strongly. It is interesting tonote that the pan-el, which presidedover this review ofelection rules, wasmostly partisan; i.e.carefully selected toensure the “right”outcome.

It is one of theo l d e s t p o l i t i c a ltricks in the book.You the reigningp o l i t i c i a n c a re -fully select whomyou’d like. The oneswhom you can trustto come up with the finalrecommendations, whichsuit your political aspira-tions. Then you presentthese findings as objectiveand impartial, the commit-tee’s response and choices.

Voters don’t care about donorsYou know we are not all

blind and oblivious to yourtactics. The public does real-ize what is going on. I readMayor Ernie Daykin’s com-ments in the article that thereis a perception of corrupt-ness and politicians beingon the take. Well, unlessyou’ve had your head buriedin the sand for the past twodecades, why wouldn’t yoube cynical of politicians andtheir motives?

There is hardly a day thatgoes by in which anotherstellar politician is exposedfor lying to the public. Cor-ruption and taking bribes

seem to have beenthe flavour of theday.Sowhyshouldn’twe be skeptical?

This is an impor-tant debate and onein which all citizen’sshould be partici-pating in. Yes, youshould be askingq u e s t i o n s a b o u tthe politicians whoreceive money fromthe different groupsand then vote infavour of their proj-ects.

Why wasn’t there a publicinvolvement on this issueand reform to the electionrules? Why were we excludedfrom the debate? Somethingsmells fishy here.

Agroup of Alouette Ele-mentary got closer look

at being homeless than per-haps any of them realizedlast Thursday.

The students were spiton, thrown shoes at, callednames, told they don’tdeserve chocolatebars and balls toplay with, amongother things by theirclassmates.

The Grade 6 and7 leadership stu-dents camped outin their playgroundfor the day to simu-late being home-less. They built theirown shelter andwere given a lim-ited amount of foodto share - crackers. They learned aboutthe issue of home-lessness for eight weeksleading up to the event, buttalking about the stereo-types didn’t compare to the

negativity they experiencedwhen the school day endedand other students filled theschoolyard.

The students who calledthem “hobos” and askedthem if they had drugs, and did the spitting, are inclasses with the leadershipkids. When asked about theturn of events, their teacher,

Julie Hearn, said thewhole exercise wenta completely dif-ferent direction shedidn’t anticipate.

“I was stunned,”she said. “I didn’tknow what to say.S o m e t h i n g h a dchanged in the after-noon.Their perspec-tive changed a lot.”

O n e s t u d e n tcommented: “I’velearned so muchtoday.”

Hearn also saidthat “the lessons

they got out of it are veryvaluable.”

The leadership studentshave done similar events in

JENNIFER MARKHAM

[email protected] past to raise awareness, including a 24-hour vow ofsilence to support people inthe community that have novoice. The $570 they raisedfor that event was given toFree the Children Founda-tion.

The students commentedthat at lunch hour their fel-low classmates were curi-ous and somewhat willing tolisten, but after school thatmood changed.

As part of creating anauthentic experience, thestudents were asked to movefrom their shelter they builtin the morning on the play-ground, to the front of theschool.

T h e p a r e n t s w h oapproached the childrenwere curious, and told themit was a good cause.

The reactions from fellow

classmates brought aboutfeelings of hurt, and empa-thy for the homeless. Whenthe leadership students triedto hand out informationslips about what they weredoing, some were crumpledand thrown back.

One student in the leader-ship class commented thatthe whole thing might havebeen a failure, but it was sug-gested that instead of raisingawareness in their commu-nity, they rose awareness inthemselves of how impor-tant and needed the workthey’re doing really is.

When asked if the studentsthought their experiencewas representative of whathomeless people experience, they agreed it must be worsefor the homeless.

Hearn said, “Nothing theybelieved before is the same.”

“I wasstunned. Ididn’t knowwhat to say.Somethinghad changedin the after-noon.”

The Chief Scout’s Award is the highest award which can be achieved at the Scout level. This year’slocal recipients are Andrew Pengelly, Brandon Champagne, Clayton Jensen, Derrick Tam, JaimeWhitford, Leonie Uriel, Liam Kent, and Matthew Piton. Peter Tam, the retired Area Commissioner, said, “what is exceptional about these kids is that they put a lot of time in community services.”They have volunteered with many local organizations, including Alouette River Management Soci-ety and the recycling society. Tam said, “these are the kids that have done more than their share.”

Brayden Grozdanich has hisown shiny set of wheels to rideon, thanks to an innovativeprogram offered by the RidgeMeadows Child DevelopmentCentre (RMCDC).

Brayden, 3, has a blast buzz-ing around on a modifiedtricycle loaned to him by the

centre as part of its Adapt-ed Bicycle Program. WhenBrayden outgrows the bike, itwill be handed down to anoth-er child of his current size.

“He loves to ride his bike,”Brayden’s mom Toni said. “Allhe wants to do is ride his bikeand blast through puddles.”

Brayden is a beneficiary ofthe program, which received afinancial shot in the arm Tues-

day morning from McDonald’sRestaurants of Canada Ltd.

McDonald’s representa-tives Angena Kumar, RobbinMcManne, and Darren Harp-er presented a cheque for$15,000 to the RMCDC. Thegrant from Ronald McDonaldHouse Charities will supportthe centre’s adapted bikes andtoys program, as well as childliteracy.

*PRICE MATCH.We determine a major competitor based on our assessment of a number of relevant factors that may vary by region. “Items you buy most” refers to our top selling products. We check competitor pricing on the majority ofitems you buy most on a weekly basis; and in all cases, no less than quarterly. We may not match a competitor’s short term promotional pricing activities(ie. one day sales or ‘door crashers’) or other promotional pricing activities such as ‘2 for1’ or ‘buy 1 get 1 free’. We do not Price Match all items at all times; where we have Price Matched an item, it will be identified in-store. This is not a price match guarantee where we match any competitor price you find. PRICE CUT. Longerterm price reductions on items identified in-store. “Items that matter most to you” refers to our top selling products.WEEKLY SPECIAL. BC Lions give back to communityAs the BC Lions get set to tackle another season at

this year’s training camp in Kamloops, many playershave wrapped up another round of community and schoolappearances.

These off-season endeavours are a big part of the Lions’community relations program, and players and staff loghundreds of hours each year speaking to students, makingspecial appearances and spreading positive messages toyoung people.

Lions centre and Lower Mainland native Dean Valli saysparticipating in these programs can be as fulfilling as puttingpoints on the board at a game.

“I’ve been involved with several of the club’s communityprograms for a few years now and it’s a great feeling toknow you’re setting a positive example for kids while havingfun at the same time!”

Some of the Lions programs include:

Lions in the HouseThe Lions in the House program is designed specifically

for students in grades 8 to 12 and emphasizes theimportance of positive life skills development for studentsand their schools.

This year, Lions defensive assistant Barron Miles andcentre Angus Reid traveled to secondary schools andengaged students in an interactive assembly with physicalactivity and motivational speeches on fitness and nutrition, bullying, continuing education, and maintaining a positiveattitude. In all, Lions visited 30 schools across the LowerMainland, speaking to more than 3,000 students as part ofthe program.

Lions PrideThis new addition to the BC Lions school program was

launched this year.In partnership with the Ministry of Public Safety and

Solicitor General, the BC Lions are inspiring youth tobe active, make positive choices and excel. Lions Prideis designed for youth in grades 8 to 12 and combinesschool visits with the creation of a flag football program.

BC Lions Terasen Gas Energy ChampionsThis program is designed specifically for children in

kindergarten through Grade 7, emphasizing the importanceof environmental responsibility and being an “EnergyChampion.”

In 2010, the BC Lions Terasen Gas Energy Championsprogram has visited 75 elementary schools throughout theLower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Interior and northernB.C.

Read, Write & RoarThe 2010 season marks the ninth year of this BC Lions’

literacy program in partnership with Literacy BC, theVancouver Public Library, the Vancouver School Board andparticipating elementary schools.

The program reached 15 school districts and morethan 25,000 elementary school students, stressing theimportance of literacy through a fun and captivating journal.

Courage for KidsIn 2009, the BC Lions continued their partnership

with United Way of the Lower Mainland in support of thisprogram.

More than 6,000 children were given the opportunity toattend a BC Lions home game during the season thanksto the generosity of Courage For Kids sponsors and theUnited Way of the Lower Mainland.

Every Yard CountsIn 2010, the BC Lions will continue to partner with BC

Children’s Hospital for the Every Yard Counts program. This initiative provides an opportunity for children to

attend a BC Lions home game, allowing them to get awayfrom their treatment schedules and the everyday battlesthey fight.

While the children get an opportunity to experience theexcitement and emotion of a CFL game, they also havea chance to meet some of the BC Lions players. Theinteractions have far-reaching effects by creating feelings ofhope and happiness, making it an enjoyable and rewardingprogram for everyone involved.

ContactsFor more information on any of these BC Lions programs,
