More serious femaleoffenders will be locked upin a $45-million addition toAlouette Correctional Centre.
by Maria [email protected]
Maximum security femaleprisoners will be moving intoAlouette Correctional Centrefor Women (ACCW) withintwo weeks after a $45-millionupgrade to the prison was made.
One hundred and four “securecustody” cells have been addedto the women’s prison – whichpreviously just had medium-and open-security areas – and55 full-time correctional officershave been hired.
On Tuesday morning, Ministerof Justice and Attorney GeneralShirley Bond joined MapleRidge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton, and the prison’s warden DawnKelly in officially opening thenew building.
Bond said that BC Correctionsis undergoing its largest expan-
sion in provincial history– $185 million is being spent onexpanding prisons, including theAlouette facility and a new pre-trial centre in Surrey.
Women who are incarceratedtend to be in worse physicalshape and weaker than theirmale counterparts, said Kelly.
They are often undernourishedand have significant addictionissues.
Services for the women at theMaple Ridge prison includesnursing care around the clock, five sessions with a medical doc-tor per week, a mental healthcoordinator, and dental services.
“We’ll have the full gamut ofservices women need,” Kellysaid.
A 20-woman-strong tac-tical team has been specificallytrained to deal with emergencysituations at the prison.
Kelly said the all-female tac-tical team will help maintain the“privacy and dignity” of womenprisoners in an acute situation.
The new maximum securityarea is divided into four pods, with a central control area abovethat looks over all the areas and
grates on the floor to monitorand communicate with the podsbelow.
In mid October, 70 femaleinmates are expected to betransferred from the SurreyPretrial centre to ACCW.
While the cells are fairly stan-dard, they also include somedetails to help women, forexample, three-step ladders forhigher bunks.
They also have a television –bought using the inmate benefit
fund, not from tax dollars – andBond said she hopes they won’tbe used just for entertainment, but also to deliver educationalprograms.
“Many, many inmates havevery low literacy levels,” Bondsaid.
The Elizabeth Fry Society pro-vides programming to the femaleinmates at the Maple Ridge pris-on, and Marla Chandler-Soanesof the society was at the officialopening ceremony.
“We’re excited about the open-ing of this facility, in particularbecause moving women fromSurrey pretrial to ACCW willenhance their ability to par-ticipate in vital programming,”Chandler-Soanes said, whichwill “help them plan for successby accessing resources includinghousing, employment opportun-ities, and family reconnection.”
Programs at the women’sprison include emotions manage-ment, relationship skills, andsubstance abuse programs.
“We want it to be a place ofhope and an opportunity forchange,” Bond said, adding thatone goal is to reduce recidivism.

New life breathed into a47-year-old structure thanksto an extensive paint job.
by Troy [email protected]
A splash of colour can do won-ders in brightening up a building.
An example of this can befound in the Hammond neigh-bourhood.
Located beside the HammondCommunity Centre, the 47-year-old building in front ofHammond’s 25-metre outdoorpool has gone from old anddreary to bright and cheery – allover the course of a few days.
Built in 1965, the pool build-ing was in desperate need of afacelift. Thanks to free labour, materials, and paint from DuluxPaints, along with the efforts ofvolunteers from the HammondNeighbours Group, it looks newagain.
The building’s interior andexterior has transformed fromits former “awful prison beige”as project coordinator CyndyJohnson-McCormick put it, toan eye-pleasing blend of sky andindigo blue.
The rusty, chainlink fence thatsurrounds the pool looks in mintcondition as well, after coats ofblack paint were meticulouslyapplied to it by hand.
This ambitious project wouldn’thave been possible if not forthe “thousands of dollars ofpaint and labour”donated byDulux, Johnson-McCormicknoted.
“I wrote thema letter sayingwe’re neighbours, and their businesssits on the histor-ical property ofHammond, whowe are, what wewant to do, andwould they be willing to donatea couple of gallons of paint,”Johnson-McCormick recounted.
Ron Conway, store managerof the Dulux location on 207thStreet, took the request steps fur-ther. He arrived at the pool withDulux’s Lower Mainland regionaldirector Colleen Crawford, andthe project took flight.
“From that day, they have goneabove and beyond,” Johnson-
McCormick said.As many as a dozen Dulux
employees were at the pool atany given time, putting in sevento nine hour days during thetransformation.
“It was at least 260 man hoursthey put in,” Johnson-McCormicksaid.
Conway, whopressure washedthe building him-self prior to thepaint job, said,“They asked for adonation of paint, and we needed aproject out here.”
The pool facil-ity has beenidentified ashaving herit-age significanceby the Maple
Ridge Heritage Commission, notbecause of its architectural valuebut through the emotional attach-ment many people have with it.
“This is a place that’s worthsaving, and thanks to DuluxPaints, it’s going to be here for alot longer,” Johnson-McCormicksaid.
At a Hammond NeighboursDay event in August, participants
bandied about the idea ofbeautifying the pool.
Neighbourhood kidsadded input through a col-ouring contest.
“We had kids draw, whatthey thought they wouldlike to see on the outside ofthe pool,” Johnson-McCormickexplained.
The concept from a couple ofpictures – a child’s rendering ofa rainbow and the sun – nowdecorate the building’s exterior. They were painted on the build-ing late last week.
“It’s… very amateurish, butthat’s what we want,” Johnson-McCormick said. “It’s meant tobe very child-friendly.”
During the summer months, the pool is usually filled withHammond’s younger residents.
The number of children livingin the neighbourhood has grownexponentially, said Johnson-McCormick, pointing out thatthe population at HammondElementary is upwards of 500students. She said a decade ago,the school had fewer than 300students, according to Johnson-McCormick.
An official ribbon-cutting atthe pool is in the works for next
spring, with Dulux representa-tives as the special guests.
“We just want to thank themevery which way we possiblycan,” Johnson-McCormick said.
Hammond Neighbours formedthis past June.
This group of Hammondresidents focus on heritage, community safety, gardening, development, and neighbourhoodbeautification.
Colouring up the neighbour-hood is on the minds of manyof these neighbours, through alocal resource guide that’s beingcreated.
The guide will display herit-age paint colours starting in 1883when Hammond was initiallyincorporated.
“We’re putting together thepaint colours, so that people cango to Dulux Paints and they’llhave those paint chips ready andavailable for them, if they wantto do their house in heritage col-ours,” Johnson-McCormick said.

About 400 people come annuallyto a festive dinner put on by MapleRidge and Pitt Meadows realtors.
by Maria [email protected]
A Thanksgiving Day dinner on Mondayorganized by local realtors is drawingsupport from the community.
For the 16th year running, Maple Ridgeand Pitt Meadows realtors are makingsure anyone who would not otherwisebe celebrating Thanksgiving this Mondaywill have the opportunity to have a hotturkey meal.
In addition to realtors donating funds tomake the meal happen, local businessesand schools are pitching in to help, saidorganizer and local realtor Joan Warn.
In addition, the Salvation Army CaringPlace is taking care of cooking the 450pounds of turkey that will be served, sheexplained.
With Tim Hortons donating coffee, donations from Westin and Haney baker-ies, turkeys at a discounted rate com-ing from Save-On-Foods, and pies fromThomas Haney Secondary, Warn calledthe event a “group effort” and not justsomething realtors are doing.
In addition, all guests will receive a giftbag and these are being decorated by stu-
dents at Laity View Elementary.Every year, the dinner is served to
between 375 to 425 people, some whoare transients in town. But there are alsomany seniors and single-parent families.
“It really is from all walks of life,”Warn said.
There is a “such a need” in the com-munity, and “in a perfect world, wewouldn’t have to do this,” Warn said.
But, she added, she hopes the peoplewho come realize that those serving themeals and those being served are not allthat different.
Several realtors, in addition to support-ing the meal financially, come to give oftheir time during the Thanksgiving Daymeal.
While Warn agreed to head up theeffort this year, she said she’s had “won-derful support” from colleagues.
“It’s a very, very large contingent ofrealtors who come together.”
The annual Real Thanksgiving Mealwill be served at St. Patrick’s Church onMonday, Oct. 8.
Doors open at 4 p.m., and dinner willbe served at 5 p.m.
There will be entertainment during thedinner – one guitar act and a realtor andhis band.
Reservations are not required to partakein the meal.
St. Patrick’s Church is located at 22561121st Ave. in Maple Ridge.

An exclusion application will be sentto the land commission for propertyalong Lougheed Highway.
by Maria [email protected]
Pitt Meadows council voted this week4-2 in favour of trying to pull land out ofthe Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) forcommercial development.
The application to exclude a strip ofland along Lougheed Highway from theALR was the subjectof a public hearing onSept. 17, and the min-utes from that meet-ing will be forwardedwith the application tothe Agricultural LandCommission.
Councillors JanisElkerton and DaveMurray voted againstthe exclusion applica-tion at Tuesday’s meet-ing.
Because of the furor over the applica-tion and with storefronts empty in PittMeadows, Elkerton said she doesn’tbelieve the exclusion application will besuccessful.
“My intuition is [the ALC is] not goingto take it out,” she said.
Elkerton said she is hearing from a lot
of Pitt Meadows residents that council isnot listening to them, both on this andon other issues – like a petition that wascollected asking for a zero-per-cent taxincrease.
“I think the public is getting fed up,”Elkerton said.
Voting in favour of the resolution werePitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters, andCouncillors Doug Bing, Gwen O’Connell, and Tracy Miyashita. Coun. Bruce Bellwas absent from the meeting.
Council was presented in the summerwith three concepts for a land exclu-sion application, and they favoured one
that was calledan “intensiveemploymentcentre” with 43per cent mixedemploymentuse, 34 per centretail-commer-cial, and 23 percent retail ormixed employ-ment.
The plan is toremove almost
33 hectares of land from the ALR.According to the staff report, the con-
cept that council chose would pay for thefuture North Lougheed Connector, a roadthat is designed to take traffic off OldDewdney Trunk Road.
The strip of land is on the north side ofLougheed Highway going east.

A majority of UBCMdelegates votedto decriminalizemarijuana.
by Maria [email protected]
Neither local mayor sup-ported a resolution lastweek at the Union of B.C.Municipalities to decrimin-alize marijuana.
Mayor Deb Walters saidshe would like a “hugediscussion” around mari-juana and its legal status.
Walters voted againstdecriminalization at lastweek’s conference, sayingthere are too many “unan-swered questions” aboutthe issue.
The resolution, whichwas supported by themajority of delegates, wasin “support of the idea ofdecriminalization,” shesaid.
But she pointed out, while the vote was todecriminalize marijuana, itdoesn’t make it legal.
“It’s really frustrating, especially as mayor, tosupport any kind of illegalactivity,” Walters said.
She would like a discus-sion on legalizing mari-juana to include mentalhealth works, police, thecourts, and higher levelsof government, noting thatultimately it will be thefederal government’s deci-sion.
The discussion at theUBCM before the vote wastoo short, Walters said, and many delegates whowanted to speak didn’t getthe chance.
Maple Ridge Mayor ErnieDaykin also voted againstthe resolution to decrim-inalize marijuana, sayingthat there was “no plan orsteps or suggested steps onwhat the plan would be.”
“By legalizing [mari-juana], they think it wouldtake the criminal elementout of it,” Daykin said.
While B.C.’s marijuanaindustry is estimated ataround $7 billion andmuch of it is going to theUnited States, Daykin saidhe believes there will stillbe a criminal market forit even if it’s not illegal inB.C.
Daykin believes thatmarijuana can be a “gate-way drug” to other drugs. But, he pointed out that socan alcohol, and that thereare many people with pre-scription drug addictions.
Pitt Meadows CouncillorJanis Elkerton voted forthe resolution, and saidthe idea was for UBCM toask other levels of govern-ment to help resolve theissue.
The local municipalitieshave to pay for policingand other problems arisingfrom illegal marijuana use.
“Prohibition has neverworked... it caused moreproblems than it solved,”Elkerton said.
She attended a six-
member panel discus-sion at UBCM – whichincluded former AttorneyGeneral Geoff Plant – thatdiscussed the problemsaround current marijuanalegislation.
The vote at UBCM isstarting a conversation onthe “festering problem” ofmarijuana; the alternativeis to leave it “in the handsin criminals,” she said.
Daykin hopes with medi-cinal marijuana, the feder-al government will “comeup with a way to mon-itor the licences they’veissued,” so that municipal-ities don’t have to be thede facto enforcers. MapleRidge council is planningto look at restricting medi-cinal marijuana grow-opsin residential areas laterthis fall.
All Maple Ridge and PittMeadows councillors werenot polled on how theyvoted at the UBCM meet-ing on the decriminaliza-tion of marijuana issue.

Application for a quarry in Yennadon sparked theire of neighbouring residents.by Maria [email protected]
Council chambers were packed on Monday afternoonwith residents concerned about a proposed gravel pit inYennadon.
Council received an application for a non-farm useon a piece of property that is in the Agricultural LandReserve. The Agricultural Land Commission asked MapleRidge council to decide whether to move forward with itor not.
The application was to mine 400,000 square metres ofgravel from the property.
Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said some people onboth sides of the debate have indicated that council’sdecision is already a “done deal,” but it isn’t, he added.
Council has to consider applications that are put intothe District of Maple Ridge and go through the proced-ure, he added.
Council could not reject the application at committeeof the whole on Monday.
Rather, council had to decide at the committee meet-ing whether they had enough information and then for-ward it to a regular meeting where the decision is made,Daykin explained.
“Our responsibility is to go to the table and be openand objective and listen to the debate,” he said.
Residents in the area are concerned about the trucktraffic, the noise, and dust that could arise from a gravelquarry.

The TIMES is once again sponsorsa writing competition that willculminate with a special ceremonyon Remembrance Day.
by Roxanne [email protected]
Poets from around the Lower Mainland, and especially locally, have been hound-ing Joe Robinsmith during the past fewmonths hopeful he and The TIMES will doit again.
Do what, onemight ask?
They want to knowif the HonouringOur Veterans poetrycontest is beingheld again, becausethey’re excitedand anxious to bepart of this specialRemembrance Daytribute that wasinitiated last year inMaple Ridge.
“I have hadrequests from theHoly Wow poetrygroup, as well asa Langley writersgroup – for instance– asking if andwhen the poetrycontest would befeatured again thisyear allowing themto again highlightour veterans and thegreat respect theyall have for the menand women servingour country,” saidRobinsmith, a pub-lished Maple Ridgewriter who con-ceived of the contestidea.
Last fall, more than 40 scribes put fin-gers to keyboard, and emailed in poetrythat expressed their support and admira-tion for this country’s veterans.
“I firmly believe that the sacrifices ofall of our soldiers, be they veterans or
those currently serving deserve to bepraised for their bravery, their commit-ment to our country, and to the rights ofall peoples to be free from oppression,”Robinsmith said.
“Without the men and women whohave given their time, their service, andin many cases their lives, Canadians andothers around the world would not beable to enjoy so many of the freedomsand rights that they do. This contest wasone small way to allow others in ourcommunity to highlight and showcase ourstrong feelings of support and gratitude.”
The success oflast year’s inaug-ural Honouring OurVeterans poetrycontest fortifiedRobinsmith’s con-viction to host itagain.
“The number ofpoems received
exceeded my wildestimagination… Fora first-year contest, that is huge,” headded, noting he wasalso impressed bythe quality, as well(See all of last year’sentries online atwww.mrtimes.com).

Opinion
Thin, apparently, is no longer“in.” According to recent studies, fat is where it’s at, within a certainrange on the body mass indexscale (BMI is a measure of bodyfat based on height and weight– considerably more accurate thanthose old insurance scales thatsaid if you’re 6 feet, you shouldweigh 170 lbs and so on).
Fat is no longer the villain weonce thought it was, leading to aplethora of medical problems suchas heart disease, diabetes, andinevitably, an early death.
Turns out moderately fat people live longer. The death rate for thin but unfit people is twicethat for those who are obese but fit, and studyafter study finds that the ideal weight for longev-ity is overweight.
The researchers might also have pointed outthat if you get hit by a car or struck by a fall-ing object, your excess weight will protect youby cushioning the blow more than if you were askinny.
Wow, what a relief! Here I was worrying aboutthe 25 or 30 pounds that I have gained since myretirement nigh on these three years ago. If I lis-ten to these fat researchers, I’ve just been makingmyself healthier by packing on the pounds.
There is one minor complication, however:where we put on the fat seems to be more rel-evant to our health than how much of it wecarry. Ergo, people who are apple-shaped (iron-ically, I eat an apple every day and it certainlyhasn’t kept the doctor away!) with more fataround their middle (men?), seem to be at higherrisk than those who are pear-shaped (hips andthighs – women?).
This all has to do with visceral fat which col-lects around the liver and the heart (I’d like tothank my researchers at Maclean’s magazine),blah, blah, blah.
So next time you’re at a party, up to yourelbows in appetizers, and you find some stick-
thin runway model looking at youdisdainfully, you can tell her orhim that you’ll be eating thoselittle sausages at their funeral.
Mind you, when it comes downto attraction, we might have aproblem with the whole fat/thindynamic. Speaking from the maleperspective, some guys like alady who is thin, but not to thepoint of Third-World-starvationthin – men like a little somethingin the hips and the buttocksand, needless to say, in the boobdepartment.
Oh, and we like smart women, too, of course:once the uh, “fun” (family newspaper euphemismfor sex) is over, we like someone who can talkabout politics and literature and the NHL lockout.
Some guys, on the other hand, like a chubbygal, and now we know why – they live longer.
That’s why we go for the ample lass – their life-span, and not all that bountiful, curvaceous flesh.
There are a lot of variables here, not the leastof which and probably the main factor in fattylongevity is – and how often have you heard thishere? – exercise! Fat is fit because he/she does30 minutes of cardio three times a week and eatswell: lots of fruit and veggies and fewer bacon/peanut butter/jalapeno burgers (I kid you not!)or buckets of chicken or deep-fried anything (andthey do deep fry anything).
I might also point out that genetics plays a parthere: mom and dad can pass along a tendencyfor high-blood pressure, depression, alcohol-ism (I have to blame someone!); but these canalso be alleviated through exercise, which I findvery therapeutic and involves endorphins and/orwomen in spandex.
In any event, we’re seeing a transition here, achange in perception of fat persons, I suppose, who heretofore have been discriminated againstin dating and hiring and other areas. So next timeyou see an overweight person at the gym, givehim/her a hug, carefully. Or, offer them a job.

Our View
Let money talkabout pipeline
Anyone who has played poker – evena friendly game – knows you don’tshow your opening hand and then tryto bluff with draw cards.
As the Enbridge pipeline rift growsbetween Alberta and B.C. – with theprovinces’ leaders fueling acrimonyrather than seeking middle ground– Premier Christy Clark needs to real-ize she played her environmental handwhen she gave B.C.’s regulatory author-ity to the federal government.
You can’t sit in full view of the table, pull some new cards out of your sleeve, and expect the other players to acceptthem as part of the original deck.
Despite giving up her province’senvironmental review process, Clarkkeeps trying to bring that card back tothe table. Her only real environmentalcard is the public outrage in B.C. – andwhile that card pulled Prime MinisterStephen Harper away from the table abit, Alberta Premier Alison Redford caneasily counter with her own province’soutrage against B.C.’s environmentalists.
Besides, that card is actually inPremier-in-waiting Adrian Dix’s hand.
If she wants to sway Redford and herAlbertans, Clark needs to come up withsome economic cards. For instance, there is a growing demand withinAlberta to partially refine the tarsandswithin Alberta’s borders, so any pipelinewould carry value-added product, bothin terms of price and the intrinsic valueof creating jobs for Albertans.
For B.C., that would mean a slightlybetter environmental outlook, as a syn-thetic crude oil spill would be less dam-aging than a mess of bitumen.
Redford might also understand thevalue of being able to drive her prov-ince’s own energy economy, instead ofbowing to the dictates of American andChinese oil interests.
Instead of bickering and back-bit-ing, the premiers of two provinces thatcould have so much in common shouldbe spreading oil on troubled waters...but only in the figurative sense, please!

Dear Editor,I would like to share with you and your
readers about an incident that befell melast week.
I had a fight with the down escalatorin Zellers, and I lost. I assure you thisis about humility and gratefulness to allwho helped me.
An off-duty paramedic angel was thereimmediately, and the Zellers staff angelsgot me a pillow and juice until the ambu-lance arrived. My blood pressure was skyhigh, and my scrapes, bumps, and bruis-es took my insistence on walking home
away from me.Then two more angels showed up,
paramedics Sean and Barry.I was taken to hospital by ambulance
and was treated wonderfully in emer-gency.
My fall caused back, neck, and hipproblems for the following week, but Iam recuperating nicely now.
I just wanted to remind the communityof Maple Ridge that you just never knowwhen you are about to meet a helpingangel. I thank mine for that day.

Dear Editor,Is it safe to cross
Dewdney Trunk Road?Since the closing of
the Albion ferry and theongoing subdivision con-struction, I have noticed
a considerable increase inauto and pedestrian trafficon Dewdney Trunk Road.
There has been consider-able road work done, dayin and day out, to improvethe traffic flow.
However, our stand-alone crosswalks havebeen overlooked. I have towonder if anyone on ourcity council safety com-mittee has ever driven onDewdney Trunk on a dark, rainy night.
Winter is just around thecorner, so we still havetime to rectify this. Thosestand-alone crosswalks areunsafe and outdated.
I have been in smallercommunities throughoutthis province, and haveseen crosswalks that arevery well lit and easy tosee. Some even had a but-ton to activate a flashingyellow caution light.
How many more acci-dents or fatalities is itgoing to take before thiscity’s safety committeebecomes proactive andaddresses this issue.

Railing lack held in balanceDear Editor,
I have in recent times been to auditoriums or theatresfor a show of some kind or another. One such place wasthe Heritage Park Senior Secondary in Mission, wherewe attended our granddaughter’s graduation ceremoniesin June.
The stairway to our seat was down about half way tothe bottom. There are no handrails for people like me tograb and hold onto on the way down.
Because I have a very challenged sense of balance, Ineed an arm to hold onto. Or I cannot go there, becauseI am somewhat disabled by this poor sense of balance.
Surely, beside each row of seats there could andshould be a handrail for such as me. I am sure that I amnot the only one with some sort of affliction. Am I?

Dear Editor,What a great magic
show from the worldchampion – a world cham-pion complete with pottyjokes of ‘poo’dles and‘shit’zu dogs.
He also showed us how
not all tricks go accord-ing to plan – and not justonce.
The show was so good,I am still wondering ifthere was another point tohim and the lady from theaudience turning the bottle
in the cylinder upsidedown so often, besidethe fact that he took herwatch.
The kids were treatedto not just magic, butalso stories: stories of hisgrandmother, his family, his travels, and how hebecame champion.
As a matter of fact, therewere as many good storiesas there was magic.
Some tricks were sogood, they were worthrepeating: early in the pro-gram, he cut a long yellowrope that glued itself backtogether, and he ended theshow with a string that heripped into pieces before itglued itself back together.
One young audiencemember was also lookingforward to a five-dollarbill under his pillow thatnight.
A great show of magicfor the kids and the adults, from a champion magi-cian.

Trashy habits make amessDear Editor,
I live on Ford Road, just off Harris Road. Lately, I havenoticed a lot of garbage just being thrown around.
And now to add to the mess from the 7-Eleven store,McDonald’s, and general trash is a new coffee shop. It’snot been open for more than 72 hours, and I wake up toa coffee cup on the top of my hedge!
I’m not sure what is the matter with people, but it’sgetting a little out of hand. Why do we not care abouthow our neighbourhood is presented? Why does theCity not put up garbage cans? Why are people so happyto throw their garbage around for someone else to pickup? It’s disgusting, not just because it’s on my hedge, but it’s our neighbourhood, and we should want to keepit clean, not like some Downtown Eastside alleyway– which sometimes I think might be cleaner than someof our roads and neighbourhoods in Pitt Meadows.
Am I the only one who cares around here, about thefact that garbage should be placed in a bin and not onthe street, hedge rows, and flower beds?
I am collecting pictures now every time I see thismess, to send in to the City.
Anthony, Pitt Meadows

The market has slowedin Maple Ridge and PittMeadows, but buyinghere is still beneficial.
Maple Ridge and PittMeadows are againnamed the fifth bestplace in Canada to
invest, according to the Real EstateInvestment Network, but even withthat distinction, sales have beenslow in the area.
As the summer drew to a closein September, home sales werewell below historical averages, according to the Real Estate Board
of Greater Vancouver (REBGV).REBGV reported that residential
property sales reached 1,516 inSeptember, a 32.5-per cent declinecompared to the 2,246 sales inSeptember 2011 and an 8.1-percent decline compared to the 1,649sales in August 2012.
September sales were 41.6 percent below the 10-year Septembersales average of 2,597.
“There’s been a clear reduc-tion in buyer demand in the threemonths since the federal govern-ment eliminated the availability ofa 30-year amortization on govern-ment-insured mortgages,” EugenKlein, REBGV president said. “Thismakes homes less affordable for
the people of the region.”According to local realtor Bonnie
Telep the market has slowed downa bit, “prob-ably dueto the newmortgagerules.”
But thereare manygreat rea-sons toconsiderbuying inMaple Ridgeand PittMeadows, said Telep, who is brok-er-owner of Coldwell Bank Tri-TelRealty and Tri-Tel Mortgage.
“Look what you get for yourmoney. The further west you go,the more you pay and less home
you get,”Telep said.
MapleRidgeand PittMeadowsare reapingthe bene-fits of thetwo majortransporta-tion projectscompleted
in the region in 2009 (the GoldenEars and Pitt River bridges) andwill also benefit from the comple-
tion of the Port Mann Bridge.Construction of the bridges,
along with the widening of theLougheed Highway, west of PittRiver, has shortened the commutetimes for residents working outsidethe communities.
“With tolls on both the GoldenEars Bridge and Port Mann Bridge,Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadowsare the only places to live whereyou can commute to work inVancouver, Burnaby, or NewWestminster and not have to paya toll,” Telep added.
This increased accessibilitywill attract strong and consistentgrowth to the region.

companies, who discover the lower costof the region is good for marketvalue.
“This is good news for you...because more jobs bring morepeople, which means the valueof your home increases,” saidMelanie Reuter, manager ofresearch with Real Estate Network(REIN).
“Not only have you bought in awonderful community with natureright on your doorstep, you havealso made a great choice because the futureof Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, botheconomically and for lifestyle, will prove
to be second to almost none in the LowerMainland,” Reuter added.
Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are in thecentre of what she calls an eco-nomic springboard, and the area isexpecting major population growthin coming years.
The Golden Ears Bridge is expect-ed to draw 20,000 to 25,000 peopleto the Metro Vancouver region, thenext few years, of which almost50 per cent are expected to maketheir homes in Maple Ridge or PittMeadows, according to REIN.
“It’s a long-term growth oppor-tunity and in a fantastic community poisedto outperform the rest of the province on somany levels,” said Reuter.
Growth good for housing
Metro Vancouver is remindingresidents in the region, includ-ing those in Maple Ridge and
Pitt Meadows, to be cautious with theirgarbage.
All refuse that is on fire, smoldering, flammable, or explosive is banned.
After three recent fires at the NorthShort transfer station, they’re askingpeople to be extra vigilant, by not placingmaterials that might start a fire in with thegarbage.
These materials include barbecue bri-
quettes and ashes not thoroughly dousedwith water, cigarettes or ashtray wastethat has not been extinguished, solventsand flammable liquids that might easilyignite, and pressurized gas canisters.
“Fire risk remains elevated through-out the region due to a hot summer andgarbage is currently very dry and easilyignited,” said Metro Vancouver communi-cations officer Greg Valou.
To find places to safely dispose ofhazardous waste, people can visit www.MetroVancouverRecycles.org.

You might be surprised to learnthat there are more than 1,500retail and commercial businessesin Maple Ridge.
About half of them – 750 or so – arein our town centre area and membersof the Downtown Maple Ridge BusinessImprovement Association (DMRBIA).
Each month the list of companies inMaple Ridge grows; so in addition to yourfavourites, we’re seeing lots of new shopsand services.
Two companies that have recently cre-ated more than 100 new local jobs areThrifty Foods and RST Instruments.
Last month Business in Vancouver(BIV) devoted a full page to the “buildingboom” in Maple Ridge, referring to theTown Centre Investment Incentive thathas resulted in some 40 new high-densityresidential and mixed-use commercial-resi-dential projects downtown; and more than400 more across the rest of Maple Ridge.
Growing opportunity
The current Maple Ridge populationof 77,400 is forecast to nearly doubleto 132,000 by 2040. And we’re on
track to double from an estimated 11,000residents living in the town centre areatoday to 22,000 during the same time.
Strong growth forecasts like these helpattract more business and residents whoappreciate the affordability, lifestyle, amenities, and opportunities here.
At the centre of all the action is ourcivic complex (municipal hall, library,
The ACT, leisure centre, public safety andpolice, Service BC, Work BC, Maple RidgeBusiness Centre, Haney Transit Exchange, and Memorial Peace Park). The park hostsmore than 70 festivals and events and theHaney Farmers Market annually.
Tens of thousands of individuals aredrawn here each year for business servi-ces and to participate in recreation andleisure activities downtown.
What a great opportunity for us all tocome together and do our part to helpcontinue the momentum – supportingexisting business and attracting otherbusinesses – as Maple Ridge becomes aprimary destination of leisure, culture andentertainment, and more destination retail.
Partnerships benefit
Currently Maple Ridge companiesemploy about 22,000 people. Aswith our population, jobs are also
forecast to roughly double to 44,000 by2040.
Today, a large percentage of MapleRidge residents leave town to go to work.At Invest Maple Ridge we’re workinghard to attract investment and createeven more high-value local jobs.
Our role at Invest Maple Ridge is invest-ment attraction and business retention andexpansion to create even more high-valuelocal jobs.
One of the ways we do so is by part-nering with other organizations. OurConnecting Businesses, Resources toSucceed brochure introduces Invest MapleRidge, Service BC, Work BC, the DMRBIA,and the chamber of commerce – organ-izations working together to help new orexisting business thrive. Students from WestviewSecondary teamed up withlittle ones from Glenwoodand Laity View elementariesfor a joint Terry Fox Run.
by Troy [email protected]
Grade 12s, kindergartners, and students from all grades inbetween gathered at WestviewSecondary Thursday after-noon for a common goal: toraise funds for the Terry FoxFoundation.
Money raised from theTerry Fox Run involving hostWestview and neighbouringGlenwood and Laity View ele-mentary schools will go to cancerresearch, through the foundation.
Westview teachers Josh Carrissand Lesley Liversidge helpedorganized their school’s part ofthe run.
Carriss and Liversidge applaud-ed the efforts of the secondaryschool’s students, who they sayworked tirelessly to take care ofmany of the little details.
“Putting the [elementary]schools together wasn’t hard, justinviting them and they were in,”Carriss said. “All the little thingstook a lot of time.”
Numbers continue to be tabu-lated, but Carriss estimated thatthe Westview school populationraised more than $2,000.
On her own, Westview Grade12 student Ryley Hatchard fund-raised over 20 days to collect anestimated $2,500, likely more, forthe foundation. A fair portion ofthose funds came from a bottledrive held last weekend. Profiledin the Sept. 18 TIMES [Sad stor-
ies motivate pupil to battlecancer], Hatchard had a goal ofraising $10,000.
She set up a sponsorship page(http://my.e2rm.com/personal-Page.aspx?registrationID=1595873#.UEl3tX0g7_N.facebook) on theTerry Fox Foundation website.
“While we won’t have theexact amount until early nextweek, once we have cashed inall of the empties, I am confidentthat we will have raised at least$2,500,” Hatchard wrote in anemail to the TIMES last week.“I really wanted to give myselfa large goal as if I aimed high Iwould achieve more.”
Hatchard was happy with allof the contributions and the sup-port people have shown duringher fundraising drive.
“Our school fundraiser todaywas awesome,” she said, fol-lowing the event. “The biggestyear yet. Two of the elementaryschools joining our walk forTerry Fox has made this themost involved year since I havebeen atWestview.”
Hatchardsaw a realsense ofcommunityand schoolspirit dur-ing theTerry FoxRun.
“I was proud to be a part ofsuch an engaged group,” shesaid.
To those who contributed toher cause, Hatchard said, “Thankyou so much for all of the sup-port.”
To others, she reminded,“Remember, it is still not too lateto donate.”
Prior to the run and walk,Tawnie Hayne from Total Body
Training led avigorous warm-upon Westview’sathletic field.
After that stu-dents, staff, and
members of the public had five-kilometre or 1.5-kilometre routesto choose from in the streets sur-rounding Westview.
Five RCMP cruisers were sta-tioned at busy traffic spots alongthe route to keep participantssafe.
Some of the kindergartenersfrom Glenwood Secondary sim-ply walked back to their schoolfrom Westview.
“That was farenough for them,to walk back,”Liversidge said.
A few of theolder studentstackled the five-kilometre route.
Liversidge saidthe excitementleading up to therun was noticeable.
“The kids have been jazzedabout it,” she said.
“It’s been very exciting in theschool,” added Carriss, mid-way through the fundraiser.“Everyone’s pumped for today
and we had a good turnout.”Following the run/walk, a tug-
of-war, dunk tank, hotdog eatingcontest, and barbecue were heldat Westview, with the goal ofraising additional funds for thefoundation.

A couple hundred people gathered atMeadow Gardens Golf Course in PittMeadows to honour a Paralympian.
by Sylver [email protected]
Don Cherry once said that there mustbe something in the water in Maple Ridgeto produce so many great athletes.
More likely, it’s the many coaches, parents, volunteers, and kids, who spendcountless hours using the facilities thathave been built and expanded with fund-ing by Meadowridge Rotary.
From the first project in Albion, to thesports court at Pitt Meadows Secondary,
to the field at Samuel RobertsonTechnical, to the track at Maple RidgeSecondary, Rotary has been fundingsports projects since its inception in 1990.
Through the years theMeadowridge Rotary sportsbanquet has raised more than$500,000 for long-term sportsfacility projects in Maple Ridgeand Pitt Meadows.
“We are blessed with so manywonderful people – not just ath-letes – but people in general,”said Rotarian and banquet organ-izer Mary Robson, who estimatesmore than $20,000 was made atthis year’s event from the silent auctionand other fundraising.
This year the Home Town Hero hon-
our was given to 20-year-old swimmerNathan Stein, who just recently returnedfrom winning a silver medal at the 2012Paralympic Games in London.
He signed his Home TownHero poster in front of a roomfull of family, friends, fellow ath-letes, and supporters.
Host John McKeachie intro-duced a number of invited guestswho were at the event, includ-ing former Home Town Heroes,2010 recipient Stirling Hart, 2003recipient Graig Merritt, 2001recipient Scotty Robinson, and2000 recipient Lesley McPherson.
Other sports legends like Whitecaps FCpresident Bob Lenarduzzi, and profes-sional football players Paul McCallum and
Larry Watkins were also present. Two original Home Town Heroes
from 1989 were on hand as well – fig-ure skater Rob Williams and soccer starKarina LeBlanc, who was sporting herrecently won bronze medal from the 2012Olympics.
Stein didn’t put on his new bling untildad Walt Stein brought it to him andhung it around his neck in front of hisnewly unveiled poster.
“It’s pretty heavy,” he said that even-ing about his silver medal from the 2012London Paralympic Games.
“There’s only one place to go from hereand I’m ready,” Stein told the crowd ofabout 200.
“I’m scared for everyone else, because Ijust keep getting faster.”

Tyrel Ogloff, #36 on the Bantam Knights, took aim for a pass during the Knights’match against Abbotsford Falcons.
The Knights win some and losesome on the weekend.by Trish ReeveSpecial to The TIMES
Travelling to Chilliwack this week-end, the Atom Knights took part inan old-school trench battle when theymet up with the Giants.
Special teams played a vital rolewith Jessie Chartrand and TristanMaschke keeping the Giant’s return-ers pinned in their own end, whiledefensively, continuous pressure upthe middle by Austin Pattenden andLucas Deane kept the offence on itsheels.
Grinding out the ground game forthe Knights, offensive linemen TysonSmith, Gabe Fitzpatrick, and JamesHarder stood shoulder to shoulderto earn every yard their ball carriersgained.
When it was over the Knights putanother one in the win column, defeating the Giants 12-7.
The Bantam Knights football team
recently played the AbbotsfordFalcons, battling to a 8-43 loss.
A gutsy call on the third downin the second quarter resulted in atouchdown. Tyrel Ogloff threw a passto Brian Dongalen for the completion. The convert kick by Chico David, went right over the fence for a point.
Late in the second quarter a longkick by David resulted in an extrapoint for the touchback.
Their next game will be Oct. 13 at 3p.m. against the North Langley Bearsat Samuel Robertson Technical.
The Junior Bantams played hardon Friday night under the lights inChilliwack against the ChilliwackBlue Team finishing with a 8-32 loss.
Mark Podschadly completed a passto Tato Ferreyro-Araya for the firsttouchdown of the game. Jake Loftuskicked it through the uprights for anadditional two points. Strong defen-sive effort were put in by Eric Rossand Sean Roy.
Their next game is Oct. 6, at 2:30p.m. against the Chilliwack Reds atTownsend Field.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Oct. 7 - 13 2012★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Aries March 21 - April 19: This week bringsrelationships front and centre – and could bringromance midweek. Sunday/Monday emphasize yourhome, family, property values, security and nutrition– Sunday’s uncertain, worrisome; Monday’s lucky but“for naught.” Romance, joys with children, creativesurges, risk and reward, pleasure and beauty fillTuesday/Wednesday – for the first time in years, youmight meet viable love, even a life mate. (The sex, health, money/career and “quiet” sides of this linkwill be fine also.) A gamble is also a good investment.Tackle chores Thursday (be safe) and Friday.Taurus April 20-May 20: Tackle chores duringthis easy, smooth week, Taurus. The only problemsappear Sunday, when money and/or sex don’t mixwith friends – you might have to choose. (Hint:think of your long-term future.) Monday’s lucky formoney and employment – but stick to routine inyour own efforts – let luck come from the outside, the cosmos. (All month, a sweet thread of romanceand beauty wends through your life – Monday holdsa hint of “destiny” in this – but again, let it happen toyou rather than chasing it.) Home, domestic affairsmidweek. Romance, creativity and pleasure sweetenlate week.Gemini May 21-June 20: The romantic themecontinues – and now, for the first time since 2009,you can actually succeed in a joyous way. Ditto forcreative projects, self-expression, speculation, sports, games, gambles, children – you’re ready for new, fresh ways and horizons! (All this will be more obviousand significant next week.) Money urges need cautionSunday/Monday. Buy nothing – yet an odd luckwill boost you. (In home finance?) Travel, friends, communications go well midweek – inspiration incareer/work has deep, fertile roots: dream big! Home, family, irk and please Thursday to Saturday.
Cancer June 21-July 22: Home, kids, food, nature, garden, soul, security and retirement baskin a smooth, productive atmosphere for the next twoweeks, so launch projects and carry them throughin these basic areas. (NOT in career, politics, etc.)The only exception is Sunday/Monday, when yourenergy and charisma rise, but your efforts might meetopposition or an “empty response.” Yet, from thecosmos, a “destiny event” could bring unasked-foraid from your government and/or mate. Receive, don’tstart or push. Chase money midweek: deeper down, love’s inspiration brews. Errands, calls, Thursdayonward.Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Errands, paperwork, reports, media, short trips, light friends and siblings fill theweeks ahead. All is smooth and productive, exceptSunday/Monday, when weird desires grip you andlife ignores your efforts. So rest, pray. Oddly, thecosmos might bring (unbidden) a gift – a friendship, abeautiful home item (buy nothing) a work pay raise?Your energy, charisma and clout soar midweek: askfavours, start things, make important contacts. Love’spossible. You feel secure, and will, for decades. Chasemoney, buy things Thursday/Friday (but not 1:30 to6:45 p.m. Thursday, nor Saturday).Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The emphasis continueson money, earnings, buying/selling, possessions, memory, rote learning and sensual relationships. These, after 3 years of restriction, are finally buoyant –so put on your $ glasses, and go forth! (Except Sunday– dangerous notions – and Monday – nil results. Oddly, though, you’ll be chirpy, happy despite roadblocks, and the universe might bring you something lucky, especially in domestic, property or love areas.) Lie low, retreat and rest midweek: contacts with government, therapists and agents succeed. Your energy andcharisma soar Thursday onward.
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Your charisma, energy, clout and effectiveness reach a yearly high, Libra. It’s actually a several-year high, so go forth duringthe next two weeks – make important contacts, startsignificant projects, and ask for co-operation – you’llget it. The only “warning” exists for Sunday (whenhealth or misgivings about partners can cause upsets)and Monday, when you should NOT begin projects.(However, Monday might bring you a legal, travel, learning or love “gift” – accept!) Your popularity soarsmidweek – light romance, optimism, wish fulfillmentoccur. Lie low, rest Thursday onward.Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Retreat, rest, contemplate and plan (except Sunday/Monday,when unreachable goals will float into your mind).Feed your spiritual side, meditate, do yoga, becharitable. Deal with government agencies, counsellors, therapists, institutions and corporatehead offices. These places/people favour you now toOctober 21, will offer sound advice and benevolentaid. It’s a great interval for planning retirement, making security investments, etc. Your imaginationis strong, productive Tuesday/Wednesday, and yourcareer benefits. Light sociability, optimism bless youThursday onward.Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Light romance, popularity, wish fulfillment, entertainment, optimismand a feel for the future that permits you to makegood, intuitive plans – these fill this week and next, and fill them more joyously and buoyantly than at anytime since 2009!Tackle chores Sunday (carefully) andMonday (routine tasks only). Love, understanding, fartravel, philosophy, education, publishing and culturalevents fill midweek. This entire first half bringsdomestic, property, career and money inspiration: animportant one. Thursday noon to Saturday accentsstatus and career – lucky Friday.
Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Be ambitious –higher-ups are observing you, might test or challengeyou Sunday/Monday. This needs subtle handling: ifSunday, be realistic, steady and diplomatic: avoid allgossip, collusion. If Monday, be willing but delay anyproject starts until at least Tuesday. (Or, no test – justa face-to-face with authority, police, etc.) Midweekaccents mysteries, detective work, finances, changesand sexual urges – pursue these. All week, you can“order” information, or imagine futures, that createnew, superb life goals. Wisdom, legal affairs, learning,Thursday afternoon onward.Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Love, wisdom, intellectual activities, far travel, culture, internationalcontacts, publishing, religion, philosophy, legal affairs– these fill the two weeks ahead. Careful Sunday/Monday, with chores, safety procedures, health – anddon’t mix money and friends. Relationships exciteand please you midweek – jump on opportunities, seek new horizons, approach that lively, naïve andregal person. You are inspired, and destiny takes ahand, in sexual, intimate, health, career and incomezones. You might buy a status symbol. Results showThursday onward, in sex, health and finances.Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The accent lies onmysteries, sexual urges, lifestyle changes, health, bigfinancial decisions and partnership/spousal finances.Be a detective, look beneath the surface. Romance, creative urges and speculative temptations mightcome to you Sunday/Monday, but you’d be wise tosteer clear. Tackle chores Tuesday/Wednesday –you’ll get a lot done. Monday to Wednesday bless youin relationships (especially if you meet someone in agroup) and bring inspiration/good imagination aboutyour future – and your social life. Crucial relationshipsarise Thursday (argument) and Friday.
