Pitt Meadows Mayor John Beckerhas proposed a joint planning ses-sion with Maple Ridge Mayor NicoleRead regarding thedevelopment of “a stra-tegic vision” for the PittMeadows airport. In a recent letter
to Read, Becker pro-poses hosting a jointworkshop for the twocouncils, with expertsin the aviation industryfacilitating the meeting,“to ensure both councils have anopportunity to educate themselves abit more about airports... and discusssome of the issues and opportunitiesthat might exist for our airport.”Following the workshop, Becker
would like to see a strategic plan-ning session take place, that wouldinclude both cities, representativesfrom the airport board, and “someform of community representation.”

Aspecial guest host, great weather, anda number of aborig-inal artists and
vendors helpedmark a success-ful NationalAboriginal Day inMemorial PeacePark on June 21.The celebration was hosted
by Nathaniel Arcand, whostars in CBC’s Heartland, andhas appeared in a number ofCanadian film and TV produc-tions over the last decade.Arcand’s presence at the
show was “awesome,” said
Yvonne Desabrais, who helpedorganize the festival. But the real success of
the weekend was the localfeel to the celebration, saidDesabrais. “We were celebrat-ing our community – aborig-inal people within our com-munity.”As the vice president of
the Fraser River All NationsAboriginal Society (FRANAS),Desabrais stressed that the
celebration wasn’tcentred on onesingle aboriginalnation, but ratheraboriginal peopleas a whole.
After all, said Desabrais,Maple Ridge is built uponland traditionally occupied bythe Katzie and Kwantlen FirstNation people, respectively. While this year’s celebra-
tion took place on a Sunday,FRANAS is eyeing a return to
the first Saturday after June 21for next year, to align the cele-bration in the park with theHaney Farmers Market.Eventually, Desabrais said
she’d like to see the City assume
responsibility for running thefestival, similar to the way themunicipality organizes activitesfor Canada Day.“It is a national holiday,” she
said.

John Becker would liketo see an 18-monthlong reduction.TROY [email protected]
Those who cross the GoldenEars Bridge on a regular basisknow full well that it can take asignificant toll on their pocket-books.Drivers with a transponder or
TReO decal currently pay a $3.05toll charge every time they crossthe bridge, with the cost slated togo up to $3.10 in mid-July.Pitt Meadows Mayor John
Becker hopes to lighten thatburden, with a proposal toTransLink to lower toll charges onthe Golden Ears Bridge while thePatullo Bridge connecting Surreyto New Westminster is underrepair.
TransLink is proceedingwith plans or structural seismicupgrades and deck rehabilitationon the Pattullo, which was openedin 1937 and is one of the region’soldest crossings. In a letter to Maple Ridge Mayor
Nicole Read and Port CoquitlamMayor Greg Moore, Becker wrote,“It has been brought to my atten-
tion that there is a proposal foran 18 month reduction in tolls onthe Port Mann Bridge while thePatullo Bridge is being resurfaced.Reducing tolls on the Golden EarsBridge during this time period isalso being considered.”Becker added that this 18 month
reduction period is estimated tobegin in March 2016 and “would
provide a great opportunity tomeasure the impact that a reduc-tion in fees would have on theutilization of the Golden Ears andPort Mann Bridges.”“It is critical that we advocate
that the Golden Ears Bridge alsobe reduced to the same level asthe Port Mann Bridge during thistime period to provide the technic-al analysis that is needed to deter-mine if use will increase enoughto keep revenue streams consistentwith current collections,” the letterstated. In December, the New
Westminster Chamber ofCommerce and Surrey Board ofTrade called the B.C. governmentto suspend or reduce tolls onthe Port Mann when mainten-ance work gets underway on thePattullo.– With files from the Vancouver

an issue in the juris-diction of higher levelgovernments,” saidMaple Ridge MayorNicole Read.In Read’s opinion,
the province shouldbe taking steps to helpsolve the issue, with-out having to be prod-ded by the city. There is “no doubt
that the situation onCliff Avenue is troub-ling to the commun-ity, local businesses, and to myself,” saidMaple Ridge-MissionMLA Marc Dalton.Dalton countered

At one o’clock in themorning on June 13,under the stadiumlights of Langley’s
McLeod Athletic Park, KierstenDuncan and her teammatesmade a small sacrifice forothers living with cancer.Today, the 22-year-old rookie
Maple Ridge City councillorproudly sports a buzz cut.“Most people recognize what
it’s for, and it was quite wide-ly publicized so most peoplewere really excited when theysaw me,” Duncan said, abouther newly shaved head. “Theywent, ‘Oh my gosh! She reallydid it!’”
This year markedDuncan’s first experiencewith the Langley Relay
For Life, which ran over 12hours from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. onJune 12 and 13.Duncan connected to the
Canadian Cancer Society fund-raiser through her good friendPhil Shuttlewood, who lives inLangley and ultimately was theperson who shaved her headfor donations.“He was getting a team
together and my friends and Ithought that if we were goingto raise money, let’s do some-thing really fun and differentthat we haven’t done before,”Duncan said.Hence the head shaving.
Initially, Duncan was theonly member of “ShavingGrace” who was going to makethe sacrifice. She dyed her hair pink for a
month to bring attention to hercause.Just past the midway point of
the relay, eight team membersstepped up to have their headsshaved, which helped “ShavingGrace” collectively raise morethan $3,500 in donations forthe society.
Duncan said the entirerelay experience inLangley was enjoyable,
albeit much chillier once herhead was shaved.“It was a little shocking,”
Duncan said with a laugh.Duncan said she’s “very
fortunate” not to have beendirectly touched by cancer butnoted, “I’ve certainly lost a lotof family to it. My little cousinis currently battling it.”
Donating to Duncan’scause were fellow MapleRidge City council mem-
bers as well as those from thelocal school board.“Shaving Grace” is still col-
lecting donations through theCanadian Cancer Society’sRelay For Life website. To connect to the website,

Preventing local fires
Smokey the Bear is worried about making sure you don’t burndown the woods, but wildfires don’t need a whole forest to getgoing.
It’s dry out there, and about to get drier and hotter with a heatwave expected to start as soon as this weekend. Every year, firefightersspend a lot of their time dealing with what can only be called stupidfires – fires started through simple, careless ignorance.
Cigarette butts are still the main cause of these fires, butts tossedonto dry grass or bark mulch on medians and in parks. The smoker canwalk away and nothing seems to happen, sometimes for hours or days. But the fire can smolder, burrowing underground and biding its time. Then there’s the puff of smoke, and if we’re lucky, the fire departmentgets a call when that’s all it is.
There have been some serious fires in the Lower Mainland in recentyears, including in 1996 and 2005 in Burns Bog. The smoldering firesclaimed 170 hectares and 200 hectares of land respectively. Numeroussmall brush fires have struck in other suburban areas around MetroVancouver and the Fraser Valley.
Other communities north of the Fraser River have to worry aboutinterface fires – blazes that start in the forest and then march towardsresidential areas.
While there have been just a few minor incidents in Pitt Meadows oflate – according to the community’s assistant fire chief Brad Perrie – italong with Maple Ridge are potential matchboxes – all it takes is a care-less toss of a cigarette, or out-of-control backyard fire.
If our recent drier, hotter summers are the result of global warming,we will see these tinder-dry conditions more frequently in the future.
That will place an even larger burden on us to be cautious with fire.Learn about your local rules for outdoor burning before you put a matchto the bonfire or fire pit. Put out that cigarette somewhere safe. Andkeep an eye out for those telltale puffs of smoke coming from the vacantlots, the medians, and the backyards.

Afriend of mine lost achild this morning. And it was my
fault. It was some-thing I did. The kid died inmy garden. It was the samegarden where I met my friendquite a few years ago.People who know me know
that I am an inveterate whist-ler.I tend to mix my pleasures.
When I’m enjoying what I’mdoing, I whistle while I work– when I’m writing, whenI’m paddling my canoe, and especiallywhen I’m gardening.I just can’t help myself. The music gets
inside me and it’s just got to get back outagain. It was fall. I was chopping up some
plants for composting, and I was whist-ling away at a swing jazz tune that Iremembered from an old movie.Next thing you know, there’s a
Chickadee singing with me!
He’s perched on a cornstock not 10 feet away fromme.Amazed, I stopped whist-
ling… and he stoppedsinging. He just cocked hishead and looked at me.Tentatively, I picked up mytune again. And he joined back in. We
were jamming. No. We werecooking!I’ve always had a love for
nature, but that day – andthe many days after, when
my friend returned again and again toshare music with me – my heart was fullto bursting with the wonder of it.Another side of nature came to my
garden two summers ago. Apple maggot.Apparently, it came into the Fraser Valleyjust a few years ago, and has been ram-pant.The fly has markings on its wings that
make it look like a spider, less than ahalf centimetre long. It lays its eggs in
immature apples, initially leaving a tiny,innocuous-looking dimple. The eggs hatch into larvae, often just
one per apple, that tunnel all throughthe fruit as it grows. One or two flies candevastate an entire dwarf tree like theones I have. That first year, I got three edible apples
out of the four or five dozen I pickedfrom a single tree.So I did some research, found myself
some pesticide which, used in the rightway, would have little or no impact onour beneficial bugs, “acceptable” risk toour birds, but bad for fish, so I had tokeep it far from our pond.OK. That seemed to work, although I
was concerned about the “acceptable”risk to the feathered colony, includingthose lovable chickadees, that we’ve cul-tivated to handle most of our garden pestproblems for us.So I did more research, and found sev-
eral university agriculture departmentsrecommend sticky fly paper to attract andtrap the maggot flies.
Large-scale orchards use the yellowstickies to alert them to the flies, andensure best pesticide practices by timingfor optimum effectiveness and minimumrisk. For just a few small trees, they sug-
gested, the sticky traps would provideadequate control without additional pesti-cide. So I hung one in my earliest appletree. And this morning I was heartbroken to
find a young chickadee splayed acrossthe sticky sheet. Its wings were twistedand contorted and plumes of feathers hadbeen torn from its body. It had put up amassive fight. And lost.I learned two important lessons. One lesson was that trying to save the
environment around us is far more com-plicated than we humans can ever trulycomprehend. The other is that sometimes the price
for saving a few damned apples can beunacceptably high.

Readersshared their views:“Great that these politicians are at the table together, discussing this. Even better that our mayor is stressingthat she will be ensuring their accountability. If she hadnot pressed for this discussion, I do believe our MLA orMP would have brushed it aside.”

Dear Editor,Our mayor is to be
commended for her sin-cere concerns about theplight of the homelessin Maple Ridge. It is not just Maple
Ridge that has this prob-lem, it is clear acrossthe country as well asin the United States. As far as helping to
solve this problem, Ican tell you it cannot beaccomplished withouttrampling on the con-stitutional rights of thehomeless themselves.
Canada is a freecountry where we areall free to live wherewe choose, work (or
not work) where wechoose, and to associatewith whoever we wish.Unless the “state”
acquires the rights todeal with the problemoutside the require-ments of our constitu-tion, there can be nosolution.Sure, some of these
people can be helped. But, that would requirethem to put an honesteffort forward on theirpart. There are many
homeless who wouldjump at an opportunityto participate in suchprograms where theyare “partners” with
the government entityresponsible for manag-ing such programs. One such program
was in effect back in1971, when I was ayoung man.The federal govern-
ment managed theunemployed through aprogram known then as“manpower.”
People who were inneed of a job wouldbe summoned to themanpower office nearestto them, take an apti-tude test, and then amanpower agent wouldoffer the applicant oneof three or four train-ing opportunities thatindicated they woulddo well at, based on thequestionnaire they hadfilled out. There were at least
six people in my weld-ing class, at then BCVocational School, who
had come to the coursein this fashion. They were told if
they did not take acourse then once theirunemployment insur-ance ran out they wouldnot be eligible for wel-fare.The incentive was
quite successful andthose welders I knewfrom the class did very, very well in life.
There was also aprogram for first-timehomebuyers back thenand the houses thatqualified were subsid-ized by the federal gov-ernment.Bare bones, but quite
livable. There are par-tial solutions, but thosesolutions do requirecertain rights to be setaside and in Canada, that will not happen.

MAPLE RIDGE & PITT MEADOWS TIMES Thursday, June 25, 2015 A9OPINION
Insects invade Volker ParkDear Editor,Nature vs Nurture… we traded socializing our
pets for an invasion of stinging pests. If you thought dogs required pest control, try an
insect invasion.Don’t walk or play in Volker Park anytime this
summer, you will be stung.Since the closing of the dog park, the entire park
has been taken over by stinging insects.Walking in Volker Park is like walking through a
stinging land mine. It’s not safe for dogs; it’s not safe for children. What are the parks and recreation department
heads going to do to make Volker Park safe forthis community?
P. Justus, Maple Ridge
Garbage must be collectedDear Editor,We will need the pied piper in this City if a uni-
versal garbage collection is not brought in.The rats are getting more plentiful and bigger. As more people move into our town the garbage
piles up and the rats, raccoons, bears, and coyotescome out to enjoy the feast. There are the people, like me, who have garbage
pickup and we have the recyclers, like me. But weall create garbage. For every one person who recycles to the max
and leaves a very small garbage footprint, we havethe people that “do not.” And they wait till thereis enough garbage for it worth while paying at thetransfer station. Rats and other night crawlers comeout to enjoy the feast.History (the plaque, for example) has shown that
waste must be removed from large populated areas. Why are we worried about a small tax increase to
get this service, by private or municipal workers? It has to be done, if not, someone get out a flute
and hide your childrenGerard Kavanagh, Maple Ridge
Dear Editor,Our family recently lost our home to fire.As devastating as that was, and continues to
be, it has given us the opportunity to witness firsthand, the kindness, caring, and generosity of thepeople living in this community.Though we will express our gratitude in person,
we would also like to acknowledge some of thesepeople in a public way (read full letter online). It goes without saying that first and foremost
we want to thank the Maple Ridge firefighters, theRidge Meadows RCMP, and the BC AmbulanceService for everything they did for us.These are true professionals and it was impres-
sive to see them work together as a team. Thesituation was a difficult one and we appreciate howhard they all worked! We would also like to thank all our friends,
family, co-workers, and community. You truly areamazing! We lost a lot of “stuff” in the fire, but we still
have everything that matters. The Britton and Carlson families

It’s librarian SusanRedmond’s favouritetime of the year.“I love the summer
reading program,” shesaid.Redmond works
at the Pitt MeadowsLibrary, and said thebest part of the pro-gram – which kickedoff on Pitt MeadowsDay and runs throughJuly and August – isseeing all the kids, par-ents, and others whocome to the library toparticipate.“It’s just wonderful,”
she added. “Everyonewho works here at thelibrary really gets intoit, as well.”This year, the theme
of the summer readingprogram is Build It!,and both Maple Ridgeand Pitt Meadowslibraries are offering awide variety of oppor-tunities to help readersof all ages build theirimagination and inter-est in reading. Theclubs are free to join.Though the Build It!
reading program cov-ers the entire FraserValley Regional Librarynetwork, Redmondsaid the library in PittMeadows is doingsomething unique andadding something alittle extra.
Starting in July, the plan is to sectionoff part of the PittMeadows Library as a“construction zone,”she elaborated. “Thekids come in and getZip-Loc bags that haveconstruction materialin them, and thenwhat we’re going to dois encourage them toconstruct things in thatarea.”She hopes some kids
will leave their projectson display for the dur-ation of the week forothers to see, as well.“In the entire Fraser
Valley, we are theonly Library doingthese Build-It bags,”Redmond noted.“Every time a child
takes a book bag, they’re automaticallyentered in a draw for abook prize,” she said.“We’re a small library, and we like to give lotsof prizes.”But the summer
reading program is by
no means just for kids.Categories of the clubare designed to includeeveryone. The Read-to-Me club
encompasses “anyonefrom birth to kinder-garten,” Redmondexplained: “Thenkindergarten kids andolder do the regularsummer reading pro-gram.” Participants geta reading record, spe-cial bookmark, weeklystickers, and chancesto win other prizes.Kids who completetheir reading recordsalso receive a medal. The teen reading
club – which includeskids in Grade 7 to 12 –is “prize-palooza,” saidRedmond.“They get tons of
stuff,” she added.For every seven
days of reading, teensreceive an entry intodraws for things likeiPad minis, and $100gift cards for Chapters.Adults can take their
reading levels to newheights as well, byjoining the adult read-ing program.Participants will
receive a reading rec-ord, and every weekhave a chance to winprizes.Prizes courtesy of
local merchants intown can also be won.“I call this a
‘multi-generationalprogram’ and I thinkFraser Valley RegionalLibrary is really for-ward-thinking, becausea program like thisallows us to includeeverybody,” Redmondsaid. The program caps
the summer seasonwith a wind-up partyat the library, whichtakes place from 6:30to 8 p.m., and includesmusic and a medalceremony. For more informa-
tion on summer pro-grams in both cities, visit www.fvrl.ca.

Expressingthanks:
During St. PatrickSchool’s recent parent
appreciation tea, principalClive Heah presentedSue Fleming with the
school’s community awardfor her work with the
Intergenerational Gardenon Edge Street. Accordingto Heah, St. Pat’s has been
“privileged” to be part ofthe garden project sinceits inception two yearsago. The Grade 7classat the time helped with
the building of the flowerbeds. Fleming approached
the staff and offered toprovide students with
garden space, in which theycould grow herbs, fruits, and vegetables. It’s beena great learning tool, forwhich Heah is grateful.
Rotary happenings:It was all smiles as Haney Rotary Club
president Jan Hickman (centre left]welcomed new club president Michelle
Broughton. Rotary district governorBill Robson (far right) and district assistant
governor Clive Evans attendedand congratulated the club on another
year of outstanding service to thiscommunity.

Car given as dry grad prize:Mitchell Wellicome’s grad was memorable, for a wholebunch of reasons, including his good fortune in winninga car. The Westview Secondary grad recently accepted
the keys to his new-to-him vehicle from West CoastMazda sales manager Jean Sleiman (left). Each yearthe West Coast Auto Group donates a vehicle to one
local high school for their dry grad. During the dry gradfestivities for Westview, Wellicome’s name was drawnfrom the barrel at 5:30 in the morning. He couldn’t behappier, expressing his appreciation to his school and
the car company. His post-secondary plans includeobtaining an apprenticeship – possibly in welding, orsome other hands-on trade – only partially joking that
he hopes his Xbox skills will come in handy.
Proud grandma: Graduation day is unforgettable for Grade 12 studentsabout to take the next step in their lives. But for Thomas Haney Secondarygrad Nicholas Girard, it was an extra special day as he visited his grandma,Alba Mazzarolo, at her seniors care home in Port Coquitlam. Alba suffers fromdementia and was unable to attend Nicholas’s graduation ceremony, so he paidher a visit dressed in his cap and gown. The two have been very close for all ofNicholas’s life. Their story was profiled [Lesson in compassion, June 4, TheTIMES]. “It was a very touching moment,” said Nicholas’s mom Gisel. “Theyboth hugged each other and started crying.”

Dear Anne,I’ve been growing chives in a pot on the patio
for many years. Every year it grows back – butnot this year. Why? I watered it, gave it someliquid food to no avail.
Florence, VancouverDear Florence,When you say you watered your chives, I won-
der how frequently that was. This winter and spring,
we had some very strangeweather: torrential rainin bursts but also verylong spells of warm, dryweather. The dry spellswere in months when wewouldn’t expect this. Allthis was very tricky forplants in containers.Containers do dry out
frequently and when theydo are very hard to re-wetbecause the dry soil canshrink away from the inner sides of the pot.You may drench the soil with water and think
the plants are having a good drink, not knowingthe water is running down the soil crack aroundthe inside edges and away. But it’s an odd problem. Chives have the repu-
tation of being very hardy and healthy: no pestsand the only disease is an occasional attack ofrust which kills them if it’s let go for ages.Anything with a fat root storage area (bulbs,
tubers or taproot) is usually quite resilient evento drought. Chives don’t have the big bulb thatother alliums do, but their root does have somestorage capability. It might be useful if you thoroughly dug up
and removed the soil from the chives pot. Havea good look for little living creatures or anythingthat looks unusual. Discard that soil. There maybe something to be learned here.Dear Anne,My lavender blooms are dying now. Does snip-
ping the dead blossoms give me a second bloombefore the end of the summer?
Terry Wong, South BurnabyDear Terry,Yes, it will. This is because lavender blooms
on this year’s stems. It’s best to prune as earlyas you can so that new stems have time to growand mature enough for blooms.

Jonas Falle has toured the world singing andpaying tribute to Swedish supergroup ABBA, buton Friday night, he’s coming home.Falle spent his early childhood in Maple Ridge
before moving to Port Moody, but for the last14 years, he and his band ABRA Cadabra havebeen touring around the world, playing at a var-iety of idyllic international spots.Falle said the experience of performing
ABBA’s songs taught him how transcendent themusic can be – it defies age demographics, lan-guage barriers, and international borders.
On Friday, ABRA Cadabra will grace the stageat The ACT in Maple Ridge – a venue that mightnot have the same cosmopolitan appeal as play-ing for the Malaysian royal family – which theband recently did – but is a homecoming forFalle and bandmate Ryan Langevin.Tickets are $34.50, with the show is set to
start at 7:30 on Friday, June 26. Tickets areavailable by calling 604-467-2787.

It was a heartbreakerthe Burrards, wholost at home Sunday.
TROY [email protected]
Unlike ice hockey, there is no“loser point” in lacrosse. An overtime loss is just that
– a loss, and the losergoes away empty-hand-ed.That only added to the
frustration of the MapleRidge Burrards, whomounted a big third-periodcomeback only to lose 10-9 tothe Victoria Shamrocks Sundaynight at Planet Ice.The loss drops the Burrards’
Western Lacrosse Associationrecord to 2-6.The Burrards are tied with
the 2-5 Nanaimo Clippers atthe bottom of the seven-team,Western Lacrosse Associationstandings, however Nanaimohas a game in hand. The Shamrocks, who won
their sixth straight con-test, now sit tied at the topof the WLA with the NewWestminster Salmonbellies, each with 6-2 records and 12points.Sunday’s game was all
Shamrocks in the earlygoing, as the visitorsbuilt a 3-1 lead after thefirst period and increasedtheir advantage to 7-2with a goal from Scott
Ranger at the 11:17 mark of themiddle frame. But from that point, it was all
Burrards, who scored the finaltwo goals of the middle stan-za and proceeded to stun thevisitors in the third frame byscoring four unanswered mark-
ers to take an 8-7 lead with4:39 to go in regulation. The Shamrocks needed a goal
from Rhys Duch – his thirdtally and fifth point of the night– with 1:51 to go in the thirdperiod to tie the game and sendit into overtime.During the overtime period,
the Shamrocks sandwichedgoals between the Burrards’Connor Goodwin’s tally to winthe game.
Victoria’s Josh Harnett scoredthe game winner at the 9:59mark of overtime.Jarret Davis and Ben
McIntosh each posted twogoals and two assists for theBurrards, who lost their secondconsecutive game in overtime.Goodwin scored twice with
one helper while the otherMaple Ridge goals came offthe sticks of Dan Taylor, TomJohnson, and Coady Adamson.
