#ELIMIN8 In 34 countries around the world, maternal and neona-

tal tetanus (MNT) can quickly turn the joy of childbirth

into tragedy. MNT kills one baby every nine minutes. Its

effects are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeat-

ed, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light

and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus

kills mothers too.

Spotlight: 3 Club Reports

What a fun time of year! With exams and everything finishing up for the end of se-

mester, Claremont Key Club decided to lay low in January. We still conducted

our annual tree chipping fundraiser, raising over 1000$ for our trip to DCON. We

also continued planning elections, social, events and fundraisers to come in Feb-

ruary, as we plan on finishing the term of strong!

Claremont

We started the month of January planning a Humanities and Science Symposium slated

on Feb 17 for the benefit of Project Educate. We have invited three speakers –a lawyer,

environmental engineer and a biomedical scientist to share about their career path in

their field of work. Admission is free but donations are welcome. This symposium is open to

all key clubbers or any high school and college students. It will be at 1:30 at the Unitarian

Church , 949 West 49th Ave. Vancouver. . We started discussing about the upcoming elec-

tions which is happening on Feb 23.

Vancouver Westside

To start off our new year as Britannia Key Clubbers, we came up with a New Year’s resolution: to be

kind and caring leaders not only within our own club but also to other students in our school. In or-

der to make that dream come true, we came up with a creative and fun service project: making

handmade "Take What You Need" posters with a ready-to-take inspirational diction in hopes that

our fellow students can find peace and motivational encouragement and boost their self-esteem.

Given that school is such a stressful environment (due to exams and drama), we hope that our stu-

dents will find our project a catalyst to keep them going. January was also an appreciative month

for us because we were able to select a Guatemalan child to sponsor through YUDA BANDS. His

name is Cristian Ajbal, a 13 years old boy with a burning passion and big aspirations to become a

doctor. His siblings are disabled and his parents cannot financially support him with his education.

Despite his situation, Cristian is still determined to become a doctor that can hopefully save other

children like his siblings and himself someday. The Britannia Key Club is very proud to be able to

raise money for a good cause and we hope that Cristian will grow up to be a wonderful leader like

us.
