community!and!organizational!conflict!prevention!and!resolution!at!George!Mason!University!

State!University!(Dominguez!Hills).!Dr.!Carpenter!worked!on!numerous!initiatives!as!a!mediator,!

Commission!on!Gang!Prevention!and!Intervention!and!the!San!Diego!County!Advisory!Council!on!

Austin!Choi1Fitzpatrick!is!a!political!sociologist!whose!work!focuses!on!social!movements!and!human!

rights.!He!is!currently!working!on!three!projects.!The!first!involves!the!articulation!of!a!human!rights!

approach!to!contemporary!slavery!and!trafficking!and!has!resulted!in!an!edited!volume!with!the!

University!of!Pennsylvania!Press!and!a!forthcoming!article!in!the!Journal(of(Human(Rights.!The!second!extends!social!movement!theory!to!social!movement!targets!violating!international!laws!but!

not!local!norms.!This!study,!drawing!on!interviews!with!contemporary!slaveholders,!was!funded!by!

the!National(Science(Foundation!and!has!resulted!in!a!book!manuscript!(As(if(We(Are(Equals!)!and!article!(under!review).!The!newest!project!explores!the!relationship!between!social!movements!and!

new!technology!and!has!started!with!an!exploration!of!drone!use!for!the!greater!good.!Work!on!the!

topic!has!appeared!in!the!Columbia(Journal(of(International(Affairs!and!Slate,!won!an!industry!award!from!the!manufacturer!DJI,!and!been!highlighted!by!Fast(Company.(Finally,!other!peer1reviewed!articles!on!causality,!leadership,!religion!fall!into!a!more!random!category!of!interests.!Austin!is!a!

Faculty!Fellow!at!the!Center!for!Media,!Data,!and!Society!(CEU)!and!occasionally!writes!for!Slate!and!Mobilizing(Ideas.!!!

Professor!

William!R.!Headley,!CSSp,!PhD,!is!a!sociologist,!counselor!and!Catholic!priest.!He!has!a!broad!

background!in!Church!leadership,!justice,!peace!and!international!aid!with!experience!in!over!70!

countries.!Bill!was!the!Major!Superior!(1979185)!of!the!USA1Eastern!Province!of!his!Holy!Spirit!

(Spiritans)!community.!While!Provincial!of!the!Spiritans,!Headley!served!on!the!Executive!

Committee,!Conference!of!Major!Superiors!of!Men;!was!the!first!President!of!the!Africa!Faith!and!

Justice!Network/USA;!and!was!instrumental!in!starting!the!Washington!Office!on!Haiti.!!In!1986,!he!

conducted!for!Jesuit!Refugee!Services!a!study!of!Nairobi,!Kenya’s!refugees.!!

!

Called!to!Generalate!administration!for!the!Spiritans!in!1987,!Bill!started!his!Community's!first!

International!Justice!and!Peace!Office!(Rome,!Italy).!He!directed!it!for!five!years.!Haunted!by!intra1

state!conflict!witnessed!in!Africa,!Fr.!Headley!used!a!sabbatical!to!research!grassroots!efforts!at!

peacemaking!in!Northern!Ireland,!Israel/Palestine,!South!Africa!and!Haiti.!!!

In!July!1993,!Professor!Headley!established!a!graduate!program!in!Conflict!Resolution!and!Peace!

Studies!at!Duquesne!University,!Pittsburgh,!PA.!He!was!named!Deputy!Executive!Director!of!Policy!

and!Strategic!Issues,!Catholic!Relief!Services,!in!March!2000.!!!As!part!of!CRS’!Executive!Team,!he!

helped!to!guide!CRS’!relief,!development,!and!justice/!peace!programs.!Early!in!2003,!he!was!

appointed!Counselor!to!CRS’!President!with!major!responsibility!for!the!Agency’s!peace!work.!As!a!

peace!builder,!Bill!has!assisted!conferences!of!bishops!in!Ghana,!Nigeria,!the!Balkans,!Sudan,!Haiti!

and!Burundi.!He!has!a!doctorate!in!sociology!(New!York!University),!advanced!degrees!in!counseling!

and!theology!and!has!done!post1doctoral!work!at!Harvard!Divinity!School,!George!Mason!University’s!

Institute!for!Conflict!Analysis!and!Resolution!and!the!Gandhi!Peace!Institute,!New!Delhi.!In!August!

2007,!Bill!became!the!founding!Dean!of!the!Joan!B.!Kroc!School!of!Peace!Studies!at!the!University!of!

San!Diego,!San!Diego,!CA.!The!Joan!B.!Kroc!School!of!Peace!Studies!is!reputed!to!be!the!first!academic!

School!of!Peace!in!the!USA.!In!2009,!Bill!received!an!Honorary!Doctorate!in!Ministry!from!the!

Professor!Sharp’s!research!focuses!on!the!role!of!law!in!post1conflict!peacebuilding!and!the!

of!peacebuilding!and!transitional!justice.!!

Professor!Sharp!has!over!seven!years!experience!working!on!issues!of!human!rights,!transitional!

commentator!on!Radio!France!International,!the!BBC!and!Voice!of!America!regarding!conflict!

peacebuilding,!poverty!alleviation!and!human!rights.!We!have!partners!and!contacts!around!the!

world!and!we!work!closely!with!students!to!find!the!experience!that!is!right!for!them.!!

The!internship!represents!a!unique!opportunity!for!students!to!learn!things!that!aren’t!written!in!any!

book,!and!which!must!be!experienced!to!be!fully!understood:!!why!do!peace!and!justice!initiatives!

often!fail!in!practice?!!Why!is!it!so!hard!to!take!good!ideas!and!translate!them!into!real!world!change?!

What!are!the!internal!politics!and!funding!dilemmas!that!often!keep!NGOs!from!being!as!effective!as!

possible?!How!does!corruption!make!it!harder!to!build!peace!and!foster!change?!!How!does!the!UN!

really!work!on!the!inside?!!!

Internship&Support&The!Kroc!School!offers!a!variety!of!services!to!support!students!with!their!internship!experience,!

including!individualized!internship!advising,!resume!and!cover!letter!review.!!For!students!

completing!internships!abroad,!students!receive!assistance!with!visa!and!travel!coordination,!an!

extensive!pre1departure!orientation!and!comprehensive!travel!insurance!while!overseas.!

Fall&Internship&Course&All!interns!will!engage!in!a!process!of!guided!reflective!practice!upon!their!return!to!San!Diego.!In!the!

internship!course,!students!will!discuss!experiences!and!make!connections!between!theories!and!

Regardless!of!a!student’s!level!of!professional!experience,!mentors!can!help!future!leaders!think!

about!problems!and!opportunities!in!new!ways!through!guided!conversations.!They!can!provide!

encouragement!and!support!in!areas!where!students!might!not!otherwise!have!access.!!For!example,!

mentors!can!facilitate!interactions!with!networks!of!changemakers!broadening!a!student’s!range!of!

professional!opportunities.!A!mentor!relationship!can!increase!access!to!new!contacts,!advice,!

knowledge,!and!capabilities.!Mentors!can!guide!mentees!in!a!number!of!ways!from!advice!on!a!

project!to!resource!identification!to!strategies!for!building!networks.!

How&does&the&Mentoring&Alliance&work?&

Kroc!School!graduate!students!will!be!encouraged!to!work!with!a!mentor!whose!expertise!matches!

individual!passions!and!interests.!To!make!the!most!of!a!mentoring!relationship!we!will!provide!

guidance!on!expectations!and!readily!available!resources!on!the!mentorship!process.!!A!mentoring!

relationship!is!a!respectful!and!professional!relationship!in!which!both!parties!learn!from!the!

experience!and!each!other.!!

The!mentor!and!mentee!will!establish!the!duration!and!frequency!of!mentoring!meetings!at!the!

beginning!of!each!semester.!!The!format!and!content!of!the!exchange!will!also!be!determined!

between!the!mentor!and!the!student.!Interactions!can!include!brainstorming!sessions,!updates!and!

follow1ups!on!current!projects,!or!more!focused!discussion!of!professional!development!topics.!!!

As!the!relationship!develops,!mentees!will!share!their!successes!with!their!mentors!and!make!sure!

the!mentor!knows!the!value!of!his/her!time!and!insights.!!It!is!important!to!always!keep!in!mind!that!

mentoring!is!about!sharing!knowledge!and!expertise!in!a!way!that!benefits!both!participants.!!!

Mentors!are!not!expected!to!provide!internships!or!jobs!for!their!student!mentees.!!

In!order!to!sustain!productive!and!mutually!beneficial!relationships!between!mentors!and!students!

we!have!created!a!memorandum!of!understanding!for!mentors!and!students!to!sign.!

&Student’s&Responsibilities&!

1. Meet!with!the!mentor!at!least!two!times!during!the!semester.!It!is!the!student’s!responsibility!to!reach!out!to!the!assigned!mentor.!Ask!for!appointments!well!in!advance!keeping!in!mind!

that!mentors!are!professionals!with!demanding!schedules.!Always!provide!several!options!for!

a!meeting.!!

2. Be!professional!in!attire!and!conduct!all!communications!with!the!mentor!in!a!professional!manner.!!

3. Attend!all!meetings!with!the!mentor!on!time!and!come!prepared!(e.g.,!prepare!questions!in!advance!of!each!meeting)!!

4.!!!Provide!any!materials!for!the!mentor!to!review!at!least!one!week!before!the!meeting.!!
