Austin!Choi1Fitzpatrick!is!a!political!sociologist!whose!work!focuses!on!social!movements!and!human!
rights.!He!is!currently!working!on!three!projects.!The!first!involves!the!articulation!of!a!human!rights!
approach!to!contemporary!slavery!and!trafficking!and!has!resulted!in!an!edited!volume!with!the!
University!of!Pennsylvania!Press!and!a!forthcoming!article!in!the!Journal(of(Human(Rights.!The!second!extends!social!movement!theory!to!social!movement!targets!violating!international!laws!but!
not!local!norms.!This!study,!drawing!on!interviews!with!contemporary!slaveholders,!was!funded!by!
the!National(Science(Foundation!and!has!resulted!in!a!book!manuscript!(As(if(We(Are(Equals!)!and!article!(under!review).!The!newest!project!explores!the!relationship!between!social!movements!and!
new!technology!and!has!started!with!an!exploration!of!drone!use!for!the!greater!good.!Work!on!the!

William!R.!Headley,!CSSp,!PhD,!is!a!sociologist,!counselor!and!Catholic!priest.!He!has!a!broad!
background!in!Church!leadership,!justice,!peace!and!international!aid!with!experience!in!over!70!
countries.!Bill!was!the!Major!Superior!(1979185)!of!the!USA1Eastern!Province!of!his!Holy!Spirit!
(Spiritans)!community.!While!Provincial!of!the!Spiritans,!Headley!served!on!the!Executive!
Committee,!Conference!of!Major!Superiors!of!Men;!was!the!first!President!of!the!Africa!Faith!and!
Justice!Network/USA;!and!was!instrumental!in!starting!the!Washington!Office!on!Haiti.!!In!1986,!he!
conducted!for!Jesuit!Refugee!Services!a!study!of!Nairobi,!Kenya’s!refugees.!!

Called!to!Generalate!administration!for!the!Spiritans!in!1987,!Bill!started!his!Community's!first!
International!Justice!and!Peace!Office!(Rome,!Italy).!He!directed!it!for!five!years.!Haunted!by!intra1
state!conflict!witnessed!in!Africa,!Fr.!Headley!used!a!sabbatical!to!research!grassroots!efforts!at!

Program&and&Peer&Resources&F.&&MAPJ&Internship&Requirement&The!internship!program!offers!a!101week!immersive!experience!working!in!the!front!lines!of!
peacebuilding,!poverty!alleviation!and!human!rights.!We!have!partners!and!contacts!around!the!
world!and!we!work!closely!with!students!to!find!the!experience!that!is!right!for!them.!!
The!internship!represents!a!unique!opportunity!for!students!to!learn!things!that!aren’t!written!in!any!
book,!and!which!must!be!experienced!to!be!fully!understood:!!why!do!peace!and!justice!initiatives!
often!fail!in!practice?!!Why!is!it!so!hard!to!take!good!ideas!and!translate!them!into!real!world!change?!
What!are!the!internal!politics!and!funding!dilemmas!that!often!keep!NGOs!from!being!as!effective!as!
possible?!How!does!corruption!make!it!harder!to!build!peace!and!foster!change?!!How!does!the!UN!
really!work!on!the!inside?!!!
Internship&Support&The!Kroc!School!offers!a!variety!of!services!to!support!students!with!their!internship!experience,!
including!individualized!internship!advising,!resume!and!cover!letter!review.!!For!students!
completing!internships!abroad,!students!receive!assistance!with!visa!and!travel!coordination,!an!
extensive!pre1departure!orientation!and!comprehensive!travel!insurance!while!overseas.!
Fall&Internship&Course&All!interns!will!engage!in!a!process!of!guided!reflective!practice!upon!their!return!to!San!Diego.!In!the!
internship!course,!students!will!discuss!experiences!and!make!connections!between!theories!and!

How&does&the&Mentoring&Alliance&work?&
Kroc!School!graduate!students!will!be!encouraged!to!work!with!a!mentor!whose!expertise!matches!
individual!passions!and!interests.!To!make!the!most!of!a!mentoring!relationship!we!will!provide!
guidance!on!expectations!and!readily!available!resources!on!the!mentorship!process.!!A!mentoring!
relationship!is!a!respectful!and!professional!relationship!in!which!both!parties!learn!from!the!
experience!and!each!other.!!
The!mentor!and!mentee!will!establish!the!duration!and!frequency!of!mentoring!meetings!at!the!
beginning!of!each!semester.!!The!format!and!content!of!the!exchange!will!also!be!determined!
between!the!mentor!and!the!student.!Interactions!can!include!brainstorming!sessions,!updates!and!
follow1ups!on!current!projects,!or!more!focused!discussion!of!professional!development!topics.!!!
As!the!relationship!develops,!mentees!will!share!their!successes!with!their!mentors!and!make!sure!
the!mentor!knows!the!value!of!his/her!time!and!insights.!!It!is!important!to!always!keep!in!mind!that!
