Low Pressure =

•cloudy weather and precipitation

•Centers of all storms have areas of low pressure

Map Symbol Flashcards

High Pressure =

•sunny to partly cloudy weather

•High pressure areas cause air to sink which prevents the formation of clouds and precipitation.

Map Symbol Flashcards

Warm Front =

•Warm air approaches cold air and rides over the cold air

•The warm air has a lot of water vapor that condenses due to the cold air underneath and causes clouds and precipitation.

Cold Front =

•Cold air approaches warm air and sinks under the warm air

•The cold air is more dense and sinks under the lighter, warmer air. Cold fronts bring less humid air, which makes for slightly “cooler” temperatures.

Occluded Front = •Cold occlusion: air behind the front is colder than the air ahead of the front. The coldest air undercuts the cool air ahead of the front and the occluded front acts like a cold front.

•Warm occlusion: the air behind the front is warmer than the air ahead of the front. The warmer air is lighter than the coldest air ahead of the front. The warmer air rises up and over the coldest air at the surface and this occluded front acts like a warm front.

Stationary Front = •The boundary between cold air and warm air when neither type of air is “winning the battle.”

•Brings several days of cloudy, wet weather that can last a week or more.

Map Symbol Flashcards

Troughs = •An elongated area of low atmospheric pressure

•Areas to the east of a trough usually have precipitation

•Areas to the west of a trough typically have colder, drier air

Rain= •Diagonal lines on a weather map indicates areas of rain.

Snow= •Asterisk marks (*) will look like lots of snowflakes and indicate snow on a weather map.
