Dear Parents and Community Members,

One year ago, Mother Teresa was proclaimed a Saint by Pope Francis.

She is now known as St Teresa of Calcutta.

She is an inspiration as she selflessly cared for the poorest of the poor in India

for many years.

Heavenly Father, You blessed Saint Teresa with gifts of

love and compassion so she could spend her life in service for the

poorest of the poor. May we imitate her examples of holiness by sharing our faith and reaching out to

those in need. Amen

The Bull and Barrel Festival is coming up in October and the P&F are in need of helpers for parking and a sausage sizzle on the day. Please let the office know if you can help.

Don’t forget to get your tickets for the Movie Night on Friday 3 November.

We are looking for a coordinator to facilitate the Japanese exchange students visit next February. Please contact the office if you are interested is assisting this worthwhile cultural exchange program.

CDFpay In the last newsletter we advised that our school will be using a new online program for ordering school uniforms. The site is now ready for use. Please read the instructions emailed with this newsletter as a separate PDF. The instructions guide you to set up your account for future orders. CDFpay can be used on multiple devices. Try it out by ordering your summer uniforms for Term Four. Faction Day/Faction Shirts Thank you to our wonderful P&F for purchasing faction banners for us. Faction shirts should be arriving soon, if all goes to plan. We are hoping to hold a ‘Faction Day’ on the last day of term, for students to wear their faction shirts and start to build team spirit. We have ordered a few extra faction shirts in each colour in some sizes. Please see the office if you did not order one, and would now like one. Interschool Carnival Please note that for the Interschool Carnival, Columba (Blue) and Clancey (Gold) will be OLOL Blue and Finnegan (Green) and Thomas (Red) will be OLOL White. ‘Veg-tember’ To encourage and promote healthy eating, we will have a ‘Veg-tember’ order day on Friday 15 September. Please return your order forms as soon as possible. School Board Next meeting is Tuesday 19 September at 5.30pm in the Staff Room. Optiminds Congratulations to our teams from Year 5 and Year 6 who competed in the Optiminds Challenge at Leschenault Catholic Primary School on Saturday 2 September. Our Year 6 students received the ‘Spirit of Optiminds’ award. Thank you to the teachers and parents who made it possible for our students to participate in this experience. Request for book donations One of our community members has requested the support of the OLOL community. Alison Congdon’s Mum’s family is from Burma. Some of her relatives fund a school in Hakha Burma. Alison’s relatives are travelling back to Burma in October and are collecting donations of basic early reading books. If you have any books you would like to donate that you think may help the Burmese students to improve their English, please bring them to the school office before the end of term. Thank you for your kind assistance.

St Vincent de Paul Society ‘thank you’ I received a letter from the St Vincent de Paul Society extending heartfelt thanks to the staff, students and school community for the toiletries that were donated and collated into drawstring bags. They said the people they assist are often in very dire straits, some homeless, and receiving a toiletries pack is a delightful surprise for them. Thank you to the Year 5 class for coordinating, and for all who contributed. This is a wonderful example of ‘Making Jesus Real’ in our wider community. Wishing you a wonderful week and a relaxing holiday with your family, commencing next Friday 22 September. School commences for Term 4 for students on Tuesday 10 October. Mrs Angela Hegney Principal

Religious Education News

Gospel Reading Matthew 18:21-35 Jesus teaches that we must forgive one another as God has forgiven us.

Sunday’s Gospel reading directly follows last week's Gospel in which Jesus taught the disciples how to handle disputes and conflict within the Christian community. In the reading Peter asks Jesus how many times one ought to extend forgiveness to another. Peter proposes a reasonable number of times, perhaps seven. Jesus replies by extending Peter's proposal by an enormous amount; not just seven times should one forgive, but 77 times. The parable of the unforgiving servant is Jesus' elaboration of his initial reply to Peter. Through the para-ble we come to understand the depths of God's mercy toward us and the results of our acceptance of God's forgiveness.

The king in the parable decides to settle accounts with his servants. We are told that one servant in particular owes the king an enormous sum of money. Despite the promise of the servant, it is unlikely that he would ev-er be able to repay the debt that he owes. The king is moved by the humility of the pleading servant and mer-cifully forgives the debt. Rather than displaying gratitude for this forgiveness, the servant confronts a fellow serv-ant who owes him a small debt—a pittance when compared with the amount that was owed to the king. The unmerciful servant refuses the pleas of his fellow servant and sends the servant to prison.

A few other servants tell the merciful king about the actions of the unforgiving servant. The king punishes the servant because he refused to show the kind of mercy he had himself received from the king. Jesus concludes by indicating that this is how it will be with God and those who refuse to forgive one another.

There is a temptation to quantify forgiveness as Peter tried to do, but Jesus' point is that forgiveness is not about quantity—the number of times we extend forgiveness to another. In the parable the king's forgiveness is like God's forgiveness, and it transforms us, helping us to be as forgiving as God. The lesson is clear: If we hoard God's mercy while showing no mercy to others, we risk forfeiting the effects of God's mercy in our lives.

MJR- Sense of Humour

One of our great Australian characteristics is our sense of

humour. Basically it means that we can laugh at ourselves and

make light of difficult things that come our way. Generally we

don't take ourselves, or life, too seriously,.

Sometimes we make mistakes and people laugh at us– like falling

in the mud. Even though it amuses others and we are not

impressed, a person with a sense of humour laughs with the

amused friends– other people spit the dummy and storm off.

It is an important quality to work on and there are many and

varied senses of humour and not everyone’s sense of humour

works in well with us.

People are attracted to friendly, cheerful people who are ready

to have a good laugh at life.

CLASS NEWS

Kindy News

We are busy observing our silk worms and watching them grow and change. We are learning all

about the language of measurement when we describe,

compare, order and sort them. We are also learning about the

basic needs that all animals have. Our silk worms can eat so many mulberry leaves in one day! We read the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and sequenced the pictures to retell the story. We

have done some beautiful collages and art work to share

with everyone during open morning.

Year 1 News

In Year 1 we have been learning about Australian money and learning to tell the time to the half hour. We enjoyed attending the 'Twits' incursion on Monday and have been reading the novel in class and doing activities about the story. We are happy that swimming lessons have finished. We are busily getting ready for our assembly on Thursday.

Pre Primary

After a busy two weeks of swimming it is lovely to get

back into our normal routine. Over the two weeks of

swimming it was lovely to see the Pre Primaries listen, and participate enthusiastically,

and their swimming skills definitely improved! This week

the class enjoyed watching “The Twits” performance by

the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre.

Afterwards we were able to make our own hand puppets, and it was amazing to see the

creativity of each student. Last week the class also enjoyed

participating in outdoor class-room day, with many hands on

activities for the students to participate in.

Year 2

In Design and Technology, the Year 2 class designed and made new Australian animals. These

animals are made up of different parts of animals that we already

know. There are some very weird, crazy and interesting

creatures. Come and have a look…

if you are brave.

Year Three News

The Year Three’s have been busy designing and building

cardboard arcade games. The students have been working hard in pairs to

construct games that other classes will come and play

next week.

Year 4 News

In Year 4 we are working hard to finish off a successful term. In Mathematics we are focusing on decimal numbers and place value. In English, we are wrapping up our unit on Persuasion by filming TV adverts that will demonstrate some of the persuasive techniques we have learnt about. For the upcoming MJR assembly we have looked closely at the core values in our school. The students were put into small groups and assigned a value to prepare a short video presentation for. We look forward to sharing some of these at the MJR assembly next week.

MISSING!

YEAR SIX CLASS

Last seen leaving the school in a blue bus,

headed for Perth.

YEAR FIVE

After two busy weeks of swimming lessons, we are looking forward to getting back into some serious work to finish the term. We are continuing our studies on Caritas and we are finishing off our keynote presentations, and preparations for our Car Wash next week. Is your car in need of a wash? Let us take care of that! In Maths and Economics, we have been working with money and have even designed our own clothing and accessories, complete with a company logo and slogan. We have many budding designers in Year 5!

For the last three weeks, the Year 4 girls have had the opportunity to explore the topic of Friendship

using mindfulness skills, guided visualisations and group discussion. Abbey Piggott who is a teacher and

counsellor from ‘South West Mindfulness’ ran three sessions, allowing each student to express their

thoughts and opinions in a monitored environment covering:

What friendship looks like, feels like and sounds like and

Communication skills

The students looked forward to each session and Abbey said the girls participated with enthusiasm and

were respectful and thoughtful during group discussion. The students also learnt:

The importance of correct breathing techniques (to develop emotional regulation, improve

cognitive performance and foster resilience)

Guided visualisation, giving students an opportunity to visualise themselves being the very best

version of themselves

How to use mindfulness tools when they are struggling with their emotions or need a moment of

reflection

How God always loves and supports us in all that we do, and as we forgive others.

Abbey currently runs Mindfulness & Meditation Sessions after school on Thursdays 3.15pm –4.15pm at

OLOL. If you are interested in finding out more or enrolling for Term 4 please contact Abbey on

Help raise funds for Our Lady of Lourdes, by shopping at Woolworths between now and the 19th September.

You can ‘post’ your stickers directly at the box located at Woolworths, Eaton Fair, or hand them in at the school office.

NOW AVAILABLE… A NEW ‘CASH-FREE’ WAY TO PAY AT OUR LADY OF LOURDES

We appreciate the frustration of needing money in the form of coins and notes to pay for your

child’s uniform items. A ‘cash only’ economy isn't how we operate in our day-to-day lives and

from now on we want to make it easy for you to pay for key school activities via a cashless

solution.

From Term 4 we will be moving to CDFpay Cash-free Solution for our uniform shop (and canteen

when it is operating again). This product is an online platform offering from the Catholic

Development Fund Melbourne (CDF).

We are encouraging parents to use this option. Please be assured that we will not be turning

away those students who choose to pay via cash, however to utilise the full benefits of the

program we encourage your participation.

More information is now available on how to download, install, set up and use this facility and is attached to today’s

newsletter. If you have any questions or concerns please speak to either Leanne or Clair in the office.
