Company XYZ is an automotive supplier that manufactures electro-mechanical assemblies for the automotive industry. They were relying heavily on outside vendors for maintenance / repair of robotic equipment. They wanted to train staff to perform these tasks in-house for a significant cost savings to the company. They hoped to solve this problem through the development of an apprenticeship program and by providing specialized training for both the apprentices and existing technical production staff.

Describe how the program was able to help you achieve your goals.

Use only your first name. You can include a description of your background or challenge.

After spending 15 years in the Information Technology (IT) field and the last 5 as a database administrator, my job was outsourced to a company in India. I was ready for a change but didn't know what to do, or how to make the transition. I wanted a job I liked, at a company with a positive company culture.

Describe what were you trying to achieve.

I chose to do short-term training as a CNC Operator, because this seemed like a good fit for me. The training was only 6 months, and the job prospects seemed good. I did my training at Symbol Job Training in Skokie and really enjoyed it.

Describe how the program was able to help you achieve your goals.

There was no way I could have afforded to update my skills on my own. Thanks to WIA, I was able to achieve this goal. They were there to offer help and guidance, as well as job search tools that I found very helpful.

Describe the positive change in your life as a result of participating in the program and your plans for the future.

Eleven months after being laid off, I was hired as a CNC Operator at a small company. Through the company I am getting more CNC training, and of course getting experience that will be helpful going forward.
