:CDITORIAL: WHAT'S THI.? • • • EPIC UFOLOGY c/o THE 3DC! Many of you will no doubt not have seen the JBC-1 90 minute TV play "The Flip

side of Dominic Hide", screened on December 9.If so then you were most unfortunte After the dismal ITV play about UFO spotters and a little gren alien called Nigol (shown earlier in 1980 ) this was nothing short of a breath of fresh air tinged with genius •. If it is repeated, and criticai acclaim was such that it might bo9then do not miss it.

On the face of it you miht not have thoucht it relevant to ufology and,of course, that was not the main purpose. It was a humorous and rather touchinc transtemporal science-fiction sga with superb actin and fine special effects, but overall in possession of a simple (and far from unique) theme which was neverthe-less Jrilliant in its execution.

Set in both 1980 and 2130 it tells of Dominic, a precocious but likeable 1vorka:::in the organisation which studies history for the future. They use "flyinG saucorr::·: to travel into the past for first hand study but are only permitted to observe and novor to land .. "\'le must keep saucer si.rhtin-s to a minimurn", he is toldcLittle lletails liko that about how these time travellers become tqdays ufonauts are woven into the story with pure incid.Jntalism.There are funny, yet to us serious oments when Dominic's saucer is seen in 1980.The JDC-1 much aired documentary "Out of this World" is even included,mid-play,and· we see the time travell3r auning at the MciUnnviltlte photo ancl remembering all the stories he has "!Jeen told about travellers who broke the rules and made contact

•• ("Remember Tom Cochran."

h.J is warned."He landed in Ohmo in 1955 and killed a dog by mistake. That dog Ht1s later to have barked and saved some people in a blazin.t:; building.,Jeca'lSG it did not all those people later died and hundreds of their future d,;scendants vanished off the face of the earth.Whon he knew wht he had done Cochrn went insanoe")

On many levels the play contained a spark of brilliance and rare insiht. Not least of importance was how the world of 2130 was made so utterly plausableTho characterisation was marvellous and one could 0asily become enraptured by the story-line.One could watch it as excellent science-fiction,or one could isnore te science and enjoy it as a movin3 lmve story.Again ono could look deeper and s8e the subtle1but clever, presentation of the "time travel hypoth8sis" for UFO sightin;s.It was in fact, in parts, first rate ufology!

I must admit to being a little biased in the play's favour because the TTH has always hold a peculiar ascination for me.It feels correct somehow. It expl2in why ":=tliens" look like us, why they behave like us, why they are so interested i:1 the minor details of our live, why they are taking samples (souvenirs), why the sightinss are dotted about throughout history and yet never alter much in their character .All in all it offers a great deal in the way of answers ( al thou_::h of course it does have the funuamental dependGnce upon whether euch travel is scientifically feasible or just a dream) Thn again it is said that· what we can imaine we will ono day do.There is a lot of future progress ahead of us and if timo-trav0l is ever invented (even in One million AD! ) then trips to here and nc;·r mi?ht occur. If tfi8'Y ever do then we would know about it (since we are in tho her ::1nd now herend now! ) By this circuitous argument one is almost forced to acc:ttrpt the TH as the most probable answer to the UFO mystery!

This theory is stran::;ely quiescent.Only a handful of thErnYetical artj_cles h<.ve ever been producGd on it.In view of its favourable points. I do wonder vrhyoOf course it hasi ts problems too and that was what made :'Flipside" such good ufolog:-:1 It provided one with most of the paradoxes and Jroblems as well as the successes of the theory .It certainly has made me think anew about this :he,slected concej)"C, Althc"'...lgh I doubt if the intention was in the mind of the playwrite he has in fac-e performed a service to ufoloy. The DBC comes of ae in a very strange vray indeed, Perhaps we should send Hugh Jurnatt on drama lessons!

This is not an easy. sbje.(,t to write about. One of the main ;ir::-oblems vrhen:· trying to educate people on t subjet of UFOs is that.they canno undrstandvwhy "they' have not made cqntat with wolq .governments.A lot of pople thus q along with thB attitude that they really do not exist, or .that the Sitins·have· a rational explanation.A number of peopl I have spoken to have ... a:=.Ked me•Hhat ev-idence there is that wo·Lld make them believe .. In fact ·a rBadin5 of the Bibl8 provides much proof of the existence o: UFOs ·and superior beins. In Ge

sounds, to'me, like generical engineeririg. On this evidence GOD must look like uso There is more. "The sons of GOD came down to·. earth and took them women .o: earth for their wives" .Accordin-; to the Bible God only had one on, Jesus. YES, THEY PROJA13LY EXIST BECAUSE,.·.. (2 ) Hilary E vans

Hilary is UFO coor dinator,-of the SociGty for·Psycqical Research, UFOIN advisor on psyct!.c matters and·au:thor of a coffee -t:l.me' book UFOs and a forthcom ing history of the Society for .. Psychical Research, which a its centenary in the _next year.

Ultimately, noe of us is likely to drerive a to-tal conviction of the reality of UFOs from anything less than a personal expevience, and then only if it is very satisfactory and solidly confirmed,Failing that, all we can entertain is. tho in-

•tellectual proposition: is.it more probable that UFOs posses·objective re ality than that they do ·not? And this proposition is meanin;ful only if we accept that9

whether or not UFOs exist, thousands of soemingy ompetent persons are repoting. in se eming good faith, seeing objects which not only loo. as if they are artifacts

but which behaqe as' if thy are real. . J•t things arc not always what they seemcEach of the four factrequirng

ae ceptance ,which "seem" to be"_ so offers a loophole , If we reject either of ·the first two there is .. no case to answe:I'.If ·witnesf!es are not of at least a-rerage

competence,or are deliberately deccivin1tus,then the whole question bf UFO reality

is meaninless.Personally, however , I am prepred 1 to believe that ·the majorlty of UFO wi tness_es are both competent and honest, .

Next· we have to consider wh.ether the witnesses .are .rirht when they say that .what they have seen is an artifact.C ould they be i,spercei ving natural phenomena; and investing hem--with the attributes of artifacts - · seeing tham , for some reason, as 1'alieri spacecraft"? There is no doubt that this process does -:.ake place on some occsionsa ,·He have to decide whether· it has happened in e...-eEy casG.

As good·

a test as any is to take a· sample of cases as reported month by m onth ( eP" in FSR ) ,'arid try ·to match them with 'natural' explanations offered by Kla.ss Hendry, et al,If we can acce.Pt that every _one is a misperceivGd aircraft, helicoptv: or whatever,th en we must agre that all UFOs are likely to be simle natural objects, desribed so inad equately . as to evade their true explanation,Personallyf thou.-h I welcome the ·saluta:uy eff<;:>rts of the debunkers,I do not find their ex- planations even remotely probabie for more than a sm all fraution of te casesQ

So we-come to the fourth "seem",and the question of physical reality . vle have

now to ask ourselves if perhaps witnesses, thou)h acting in good faith , did not in

fact see what they thou;ht they saw,but only haa the illusion of seeing it, ?

Once ain, whether we accept such a possibility must be a matter for individual Jecision.Wc hve. to consider whether thG pparant leaving of physical ·traces, and the frequency of multiple witnesses, could all be attributable to a psychololcal process.Personally, thouh Iaept that such processes occur anu are the cause of many anomalous phenomena I do not fin<l it adequate for more thana few UFO case·s·.

Thou;r,h some UFO cases ahare some similarities Hith some ghost reports the diffGrences between them seem to me at least as sinificant. So, while I believe that study of pranormal anomalies may contribute to understandin the UFO I would not GXpect such study to ·ive us .a total explanation. UFOs really do. exist because so ·many·pcople see them , experience them and have their lives radically altered by that·exporience. These vivid phrases just quoted re typical of the way people describe·these experiences,or describe their ·first contast with someone who has just had an encounter.with the: totally unkowna

Such a steady flow of · reports from all over the world cannot be igno'red ·? and some scientists are :i:now thinking that it ,is time some objective research uas ·done into the subject.It'.>is early days yet. for science to take an i17-terest, since ihG phenomenon is not biddble and refuses to come into the laboratory . Scentific respectability without this repeatability or very much concrete evidence comes_ very slowly, but it can be gained,as is shown by the story of that other doubtful phenomenon - ball lightning. There had been a steady drizzle of reports from eye witnesses through all time, and several retent dossiers had been built up.On one occasion it was recorded that a ball fell into a barrel of rain water and boiled it all away yet science did not admit that it existed.

!IFOs EXIST ECAUSE ? (3) • • • 6 Many explanations were forthcoming (it was lightninG seen end-on or retinal

images after a flash etc etc ) , but gradually the resistance of science to an apnarantly impossible phenomenon·was broken down and people beGan to experiment and search for an explanatory model. It still has not been found, although there have been significant advances of late. In the same way I'balieve the flow of UFO experiences will wear down the objections and Gain acceptance for the UFO.

It is often said that the UFO transcends ?O many laws of nature , as we·know them9 that it must be a product of the subconscious ':mind,. or clreams,or a phantasmcliell, so it may be,but there is one sinificant observation which makes me believe that even if UFOs are brought into existence ')y the human mind, as a catalyst, then there must be an external. stimulus which trige;ers that action.

Jacques Vallee first found that the UFO experience is found is inverse proportion to poulation density; it is fClr IJlOre likely to occur in remote areas than in cities.ll 3edish research eroup tested this statistically an found it correct, at least for Sweden. Therefore,I feel,it cannot be altogether a natural function of the human brain or it would . concentrate where there are more people, like suicides, murders and traffic offences.

It has also been observed that UFOs and occupants display skills, u.e equipment and get up to antics which, although like ma5ic and incomprehensible at. tho time.,· are lciter seen to be on the foremost fringe of human advance. The ·airship .•vaves -t the turn of the century displayed this well. And this trend·.-·o')ntinues todayo

I recall readin_ rtbout some French peasant chldren in the ·ear):y fifties who . came upon a UFO in a field. Some occupants were floating, doing somersaults and one· took a dive headfirst into the craft, quite unaffected by ravity. It was not until over ten years later tnat the population Generally were made aware of what one is capable of beyong the effects of gravity, thanks to the asttonuts.

UFO occupants have beon reported transmitting messages telepathically into q witness's brain while pressin_s buttons on a control box.According. t.o a rGcent ·:r work (1) research in Leningrad is bein:r, done on electrical j_mpulses reprosentin13 accoustical si1nals which the brain translates into messages.Simple messaes can now be placed directly·into the brain by means of electrodes.Tqe ufonauts we aain displaying techniques, unknown at the time, but a distinct scientifi possibilityProfessor Eric Laithwaite is researchin the exciting way ravity is lost by a rapidly spinning disc.UFOs have been demonstrating this for years!

So,if UFOs have no reality beyond the human subconscios, then tht subconscious must· be a·'universal orte ,able to extract ideas from the most advanced scivntific thinkinG of our timH,inserting them into the OJnscious mind of a French paasant child, or a Botivian.gaucho,or a Belgian businessman drivine home from work.

Finally, I thf\· UFOs d9 ,exist because they m\:st! Gi vGn the number of suns in·. our p;alaxy older tha!') ours, and accordinf2 to Peter Warrington's .elephant effect (3) or hime Hiehel's fmous cat-flap (4 ) only one civilisation is needed to spread its influence beyond its own solar system, for a whole galaxy to be per- " meated by that influo2 in a v0ry short. time.

I believe that the UFO close encounter may be a .side-effect of such an influenu which may be moe pervasive than we realise. But the UFO experience must pe a real one. and UFOs must .really exist. _ . _ . . . .. .. . This has been an interestin exercise for a number of reasons. For ono thng leading ufolofusts had to be coaxed, cojoled and almost bullied into respo:nidin{S (nd even then most of our regulars did not contribute) There seemed a stranGe reluctance to meet this most important of questions head-.on.After all if.-we have no real eviQence that ·our phenomenon exists then what on earth are we still aro: fort Fun? Social meetin.1s? Prese:vation of mustique? All these ideas have boon . pro:posGd recently by the newbreed of ufo loist - the sceptical believer - Hho is makin._; his presence dramatically fel t,.Allen Greenfield was first to be frank in -a superb, and crucial, article conveniently swept under the .carpqt by most fol'·, ists (just as they accuse science of sweeping,UFOs into that same cubby-hole) (l) He has been echoed by others, includin6 myself, Peter · Warring ton ,Bob Morrell and Allan Hendry, in his extremely important book (Z.).Whether this is a octal trend; manipulation from elsewhere or a genuine mistrust of our own footing is hard to_ say. •

So let me ponder my own reasons for believing UFOs real, fully reconising that

this is a vastly different thing to believing that there is a senine phenomeno11.
