1.3.4 Preventing Data Transfer Time-out from HostsGenerally, hosts abandon data transfer to peripherals when a peripheral is BUSY continuously for dozens ofseconds. To prevent this kind of time-out, the printer receives data very slowly, several bytes per minute, even if the printer is in a busy state. This slowdown starts when the remainder of the input buffer drops underseveral hundred bytes. Finally, the printer is BUSY continuously when the input buffer is full.

1.3.5 Interface SelectionThe EPSON Stylus COLOR 1520 has three types of interfaces available: parallel, serial, and optionalinterfaces. Each interface can be selected manually or automatically. Both modes are selected thorough thedefault setting mode.

Manual selectionOne of 3 interfaces selected through the default setting mode. The selected interface is fixed.

Automatic selectionWhen the printer is in this mode, the printer is initialized to the idle state when it is turned on. Then theinterface that receives data first is selected. When the host stops data transfer and the printer is in thestand-by state for the specific time, the printer returns to the idle state. As long as the host sends data orthe printer interface is in busy state, the selected interface remains active.

Interface State and Interface Selection When the parallel interface is not selected, the interface goes into the busy state. When the serial interface is not selected, the interface sets the DTR signal MARK. When the printer is initialized or returned to the idle state, the parallel interface goes into the ready

state and the serial interface sets the DTR signal SPACE.

Note) An interrupt signal such as the /INIT signal on the parallel interface is ignored while that interface is not selected.

    2.1 Overview

  • 8/11/2019 Manual Tcnico y PPL Stylus 1520

    45/197

This chapter describes the operating principles of the printer mechanism and electrical circuit.

    2.2 Printer Mechanism Operating Principles

2.2.1.1 M-4I60 Printer MechanismThis printer is composed mainly of the printhead unit, paper feeding mechanism, CR mechanism and thepump mechanism. The block chart for the printer mechanism is shown in Figure 2-1. The printer mechanismof this printer has 2 motors: CR and PF. The torque from the CR motor moves the CR in the columndirection. The torque from the PF motor is transmitted to both the paper feeding mechanism and the pumpmechanism. The direction is determined by the CR position. The release lever transmits torque from the PFmotor to the tractor side to feed continuous paper.

2.2.2 Printing MechanismThe printer uses an on-demand ink jet system to print, as used by other EPSON ink jet printers. This printer, however, has a new printhead, which is designed to produce high quality output at a higher speed. Theprinting mechanism has 2 parts: ink cartridge and printhead.

2.2.2.1 Printhead StructureThis printer has a black printhead and color printhead. The structures of the printheads are basically thesame except for the nozzle configuration. The black printhead has 128 nozzles (32 nozzles for each of 4rows) The color printhead, with 3 heads for Magenta, Cyan, and Yellow, has 64 nozzles (32 nozzles for eachof 2 rows) for each color.

    47/197

2.2.2.2 Printing ProcessThe stages below describe how with the on-demand ink jet system ejects ink from each nozzle.Step 1 Normal stateWhen no print signal is output, the PZT does not move and the pressure in the cavity is kept at a constant

level.Step 2 Ejecting stateA print signal is output by the head driver board to a specific nozzle to drive the PZT. The voltage isproduced in the common driver circuit board on the control board. When voltage is applied to the PZT, thePZT moves and the pressure in the cavity changes. This operation causes the ink in the cavity to spurt outfrom the nozzle.

During ink charging or cleaning, negative pressure in the cavity absorbs the ink from the cartridge to refill thecavity. The unused ink adheres to the nozzle surface and increases viscosity in the nozzles, causing lowprinting quality. To prevent this problem, the ink is periodically absorbed and sent into the waste ink drainpads by the pump mechanism. Ink viscosity tends to change with the temperature around the printhead. Toprevent this, a thermistor is attached to the driver circuit board. This is used to determine the proper drivepulse automatically based on the detected temperature.

2.2.2.3 Printing MethodsThis printer has special printing modes for various types of graphic images.

Double-Firing Normal Dot / One Dot Print ModesIn ANK or bitmap image mode the printer forms 1 dot with double ink ejections. In raster graphics mode, which requires high-resolution, it forms 1 dot with a single ink ejection.

EPSON Micro Dot PrintingBoth black and color printouts can be made in normal dot print mode and EPSON micro dot print mode.In the normal dot print mode, the printer uses less ink to create sharper dots. This expands the gradationrange for a more delicate tone. This mode is available when 1440 720-dpi-paper or glossy film isselected.

2.2.3 Carriage (CR) MechanismThe CR mechanism is composed of the CR unit, CR motor, timing belt, CR guide shaft, paper eject frame, and HP sensor (Home Position sensor). Torque from the CR motor is transmitted via the timing belt to theCR unit right and left along the paper eject frame and CR guide shaft, depending on the way the CR motorrotates. The CR is detected at the home position by the HP sensor when the printer is turned on. Its positionis controlled by an open loop. 2.2.4 Paper Feed MechanismThe paper feed mechanism of this printer consists of the integrated ASF (Auto Sheet Feeder), tractor, PF(Paper Feed) motor, front/rear PE (Paper End) sensors, PF roller, paper guide mechanism, paper eject unit, and PF motor drive disengage mechanism. Torque from the PF motor is transmitted to load, feed and ejectpaper. While the printer is not printing, the disengage mechanism switches torque from the PF motor to thepump mechanism. While paper is being fed, the PF motor transmits torque via the PF motor pinion gear anddisengage gear to the PF roller, where torque goes 2 directions. One is to the paper eject mechanism via thegear train in the paper guide assembly. The other is to the ASF mechanism via the transmission gear. The tractor drive gear train is set at the left end of the PF roller. Table 2-4 and Table 2-5 show thespecifications for the PF motor and drive terms. Figure 2-5 illustrates the paper feed mechanism.

2.2.4.1 ASF (Auto Sheet Feeder) MechanismThe PF roller creates torque that is transmitted to the pick up roller in the ASF mechanism via the planetarygear. The PF motor drive disengage mechanism switches the torque based on the detected position of theCR unit. The pick up roller shaft has 2 arms on the right and left, which push down the paper support so thepaper surface contacts the pick up roller. The one way clutch rotates the pick up roller to load paper. Thepaper feed mechanism feeds the loaded paper and disengages the gear transmission from the planetarygear.

is transmitted to the tractor gears via the disengage mechanism. When the release lever is set to the tractorside, the release sensor detects the position and torque from the ASF mechanism is disengaged.

    2.2.4.3 Manual Feed Mechanism

The printer loads cut sheets and roll paper through the rear paper slot. While paper is detected by the rearPE sensor, the CR unit is out of the ASF paper feeding position. Therefore, paper must be loaded manually, even if there is paper in the ASF.

2.2.5 Platen Gap (PG) Adjust MechanismThe PG adjust mechanism, at the top right of the printer mechanism, allows the user to set the proper platengap (distance between paper and nozzle surface) for the paper thickness to prevent ink from smudging. ThePG adjust mechanism consists of the PG adjust lever, CR guide shaft, and parallelism adjustment bushing. The parallelism adjustment bushing joins the CR guide shaft, with an eccentricity toward the guide shaft.Shifting the lever from 0 to 1 rotates the CR guide shaft away from or toward the platen, changing theplaten gap from wide to narrow or vice versa.

Operating Principles The pump mechanism absorbs ink inside the printhead and drains ink to the waste ink drain pads via thecap. Since the printer has black and color printheads, the pump mechanism functions for the both by usingthe alternating directions of the PF motor. When the PF motor rotates forward (the direction for feedingpaper) the pump is used for the black printhead When the PF motor rotates backward (the direction for

The pump mechanism is composed of 2rollers, a tube, and a pulley. To draw ink, the pulley rotates the rollers, squeezing the tube to produce

negative pressure, absorbing the ink and draining it to the waste ink drain pad.

increasing in viscosity while the printer is in stand-by or power is off. The cap is individually equipped for theblack and color printheads. When the CR moves right, the cap holder also shifts right and strikes the rightframe. This motion opens the air valve to release air in the cap. To start printing, the CR moves right from

the home position to strike the right frame with the cap holder so that the air valve opens. This bringsnegative pressure in the cap back to normal and the CR goes back to the home position. The power switchof the printer uses a secondary circuit that keeps power on until the capping operation is complete, even ifthe printer is turned off during the operation.

The forward rotation of the PF motor causes the head cleaner toleave the path. Only one head cleaner is used for both black and color printheads. The head cleaner is usedas the CR lock mechanism. When the printer power is off, it locks the CR unit off the printing side. The rightframe also locks the CR at the right end. The CR remains in the capping position while transported.

This printer consists of the following circuit boards: C211 MAIN board C178 PSB/PSE board C211 Panel board

Printhead driver circuits (nozzle selection circuit) are directly attached to the black and color printheads.Figure 2-17 shows a block diagram of the electrical circuits.

2.3.1 C172 PSB/PSE Electrical Circuit BoardThe input voltages for the PSB/PSE board are shown in Table 2-7. Since the electrical circuit of this printer isa secondary circuit, it uses a delay timer to make the printer execute the capping operation even after theprinter is turned off. The printer uses this function to prevent ink clogging or smudging caused by an exposedprinthead.

The electrical circuitry of this board uses the RCC (Ringing Choke Converter) switching regulator. ACvoltage is first input to the filter circuit for higher harmonics absorption and is then input to the rectificationand smoothing circuits, where it is converted into DC voltage. The DC voltage is then input to the switchingcircuit. An FET on the primary side performs this switching operation then generates +42 voltage that isstabilized on the secondary side and then converted into a stable +5 VDC by the regulator IC.

The operating principles for the various protection and controller circuits shown above are described below. +5 VDC line over-voltage protection circuit

The output voltage level of the 5 V line is monitored by a Zener diode (ZD53). If the voltage levelexceeds 9 V, information is fed back to the primary switching circuit through the transistor (Q82) andPhoto coupler (PC1) to cut the +42 V line to the regulator (OC51).

+5 VDC line constant voltage control circuitVoltage in the +5 VDC line is controlled by the regulator IC (IC51). When abnormal voltage in the +5VDC line is detected, information is input to the internal comparator of the regulator so it controls thevoltage.

+42 VDC line over-voltage protection circuitThe output level of the +42 VDC line is monitored by 2 Zener diodes, ZD52 and ZD87. The circuitoperates as follows:

Output level of the +42 VDC line exceeds +48 V

2.3.2.1 Reset CircuitsThe C211 main board contains two reset circuits: the logic line (+5V) and the power (+42 V) line. Reset ICM51955BFP (IC4) monitors the +42V line When the voltage level drops below 33 2 V It outputs an /NMI

  • 8/11/2019 Manual Tcnico y PPL Stylus 1520

    64/197

M51955BFP (IC4) monitors the +42V line. When the voltage level drops below 33.2 V, It outputs an /NMIsignal to the CPU and the gate array to cut off the power to the motors. When the voltage level drops below42 V, Reset IC RST592D (IC1) monitors the +5 V line and sends a LOW pulse. During printer power-on, itoutputs LOW until a stabilized +5 V is produced to ensure the CPUs proper operation.

2.3.2.2 Sensor CircuitsThis printer has 9 sensors to monitor its condition.

HP Sensor (Home position sensor)The HP sensor uses the photo interrupter system. When the CR unit is at the home position, the signalgoes LOW. A HIGH signal level indicates that the CR unit is off the home position. The photo interruptsystem is highly reliable because it has no contact with any other mechanism.

PE_R sensor (Rear Paper End sensor)The PE_R sensor, attached to the rear side of the paper path, detects paper for continuous feeding or cut

sheets set in the rear side of the paper path. A mechanical switch used for this sensor opens when paperis fed and closes when no paper is detected. PE_F sensor (Front Paper End sensor)

The PE_F sensor, located in the paper guide unit, detects cut sheets in the ASF. This sensor uses amechanical switch, which opens when paper is detected, and closes when no paper is detected.

REL sensor (Release sensor)The REL sensor is built into the rear part of the left frame of the printer mechanism. It determineswhether the release lever is set to the cut sheet side (friction mode), or the continuous paper side (tractormode). A mechanical switch opens when the lever is set for friction mode and closes when the lever isset for tractor mode.

DE sensor (Disengage sensor)DE sensor built into the middle frame detects the CR position. A mechanical switch used for this sensoropens when the CR is at the pump side and it closes when the CR is at the paper feeding side.

BCO sensor (Black ink cartridge sensor)BCO sensor, attached to the black ink cartridge holder in the CR unit, detects the black ink cartridge
