Manual Marching Song

When you're marching for old Manual, you had better march like men;

And every mile you march for her, you will wish were eight or ten.

When you're marching for old Manual, your three years won't be long,

and then you'll wish you were back again, to sing her marching song.

Marching for old Manual,a worthy road we tread;

The hearts are beating high and the blood runs red.

We're all young together, and the best of life's ahead,

when you're marching for old Manual.

Acknowledgments

Seeing Manual

Have you ever seen Manual in one wide sweeping glance?

Seen the building and the lamp posts--the football games on week ends,

the homecoming parade, a choir Christmas program,

or a teachers' stunt show skit?

Have you heard the noisy clatterin the hallways every morning,

the gong of the bell when class is outor the hushed stillness in the Code assembly?

Have you felt the deep frustration of a wholly fruitless effort,

the satisfaction of a job well done, the warmth of lasting friendship,

or sadness for someone?

Can you see all this in one swift glance?The answer is simple: of course you cannot!For the view is too broad, the eye is too slow

to see even a portion of the whole.To see it takes years, three to be exact.To see it takes joy, anger, frustration, and you must be alert, to see it once, and then move on in a new direction. by Marcia Hagemeyer, 1962 Mirror

Manual Spirit The warm enthusiasm of Manual's spirit has brought her great acclaim in the past years. Without this element, Manual would be just another institution, a school established as a machine, which operated primarily for the stuffing of facts and figures into human heads. With this renowned spirit, Manual is transformed into the great school to which we proudly sing, "And every mile you march for her, you'll wish were eight or ten".

Where the spirit begins is hard to say, but it is quite evident that it will long continue..as long as the student body lives up to the ideals provided for and maintained by her loyal constituents. 1953 Manual Mirror

Past, Present, and Future Manualites

To those students of the past from whom we derived the source of the true Manual spirit of loyalty, tradition, honesty, and friendly rivalry.

To our contemporaries, those with whom we have shared our experiences, our friendships, and our loyalties.

To the future Manualites, we bequeath these traditions which we, the past and present students, have so proudly upheld. 1954 Mirror

Was the angel on my other shoulder; we had great times and that smile of hers - always on and on time. I loved attending Manual. Employer: Universidade Federal Do Rio De Janeiro Occupation(s): Architect and Professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil Retired: No

Places you have lived: RIO DE JANEIRO, BR (where I still live), BERLIN, GERMANY, (where I lived for 6 months involved in a research project, and where afterwards I went back and forth for a couple of years in a cooperation program between the cities of Berlin and Rio de Janeiro, of which I was the Brazilian coordinator). And in PEORIA, ILL., as a MTHS exchange student.

Activities, hobbies, interests: ARCHITECTURE, ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING, URBAN PLANNING, PROJECT CONSULTING, LANDSCAPE PLANNING and GREEN ROOFS. This has been one of my latest interest and hobby. What I like best is TRAVELING – either while working in projects, participating in seminars, or just by leisure with family or friends. I love to get in touch with different cultures and landscapes, and whenever possible, in an approach that goes beyond the tourist perspective.

Travel adventures: I have been to many countries in Europe and South America, some in Asia – Thailand, Laos and Cambodia – Canada, Mexico, South Africa, among others. Some of the most exciting trips were to Tahiti and the Islands – Moorea, Raiatea, Tahaa, Huahine, Bora Bora and Rangiroa – where I spent over 2 months, including a sailing trip to Tetiaroa (Marlon Brando’s tuamotu); Easter Island, Machu Pichu in Peru, Cuba, and South Africa – where I crossed the desert of Karoo by car, from Johannesburg to Cape Town. Cities I love and where I could live: Berlin, London, Prague, Paris, Stockholm, New York and of course, Rio de Janeiro. Places I want to visit: Finland, Norway, Russia, China, Eastern European countries and many, many others.

Fond memories of Manual: Being a Senior at Manual was a very important and unique experience and it really changed my life and my perspective of the world. The warm reception I received from my American family and every student from Manual was really special and I will keep it forever in my memory. My classmates and teachers from History, Speech and English, French and Art, Typing (which turned out to be quite useful for computer), the talks on the corridors and sometimes even during classes, the everyday homework which I hated, the stunt show, the parties at Manual, the slumber parties, the picnics at McCann’s, the football games, all was new and exciting, but what touched me more was the friendship from those who got close to me: my sister Cheryl, who was a Junior, and her friend Sharon; Marilee, Norma, Mary, Dave Dippold, Bill Lunsford, Dave, Bill Kessler, Ed, Monty - who teased me all the time – and all my other friends. Our Graduation and the party after that, the great times we had together. Our laughs, our worries, our easy and happy going life. I remember a very special day when Dave took me to the Spring Concert at Manual, when the Concert Band played beautifully a Brazilian classic song in my honor: Aquarela do Brasil - which was really moving. To all of you, who made my stay at Manual and in Peoria a very special one, my thanks, my memories, my friendship and my love. _________________________________________________________________________

Fond memories of Manual: Becoming a teacher because of the inspiration of Chuck Voeste, Gary Wooley, Bee Cluts, and Stu Becker. My years at Manual really prepared me for Bradley; the school building was not much but the teachers were great. My fondest memories include the intramural sports program, football games, being on the AV crew, and my academic classes. I walked over two miles to get to Manual, and I still remember stopping at Brophy's on Stanley St. to get a Coke. It was safe back then. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
