1. IntroductionFor decades, Leica Geosystems has enjoyed a worldwide technological lead in the manufacture of classical surveying instruments and systems. Starting in 1987, Leica Geosystems established a close business relationship with Magnavox's commercial GPS business unit for the design and construction of GPS surveying sensors. This culmi-nated into Leica Geosystems acquisition of the Magnavox GPS business unit in 1994. With this purchase, the unbroken chain of impressive "firsts" now incorporated the field of satellite navigation and positioning technology. Magnavox was one of the first pioneers in this arena, playing a leading role in the development of GPS and its predecessors. Further acquisition of the Philips Ap Navi-gator business in 1997 widened Leica Geosystems product palette to an even greater extent.

In May 1999, Leica Geosystems entered the GIS/GPS data collection market with the introduction of the Leica Geosystems GS50 GPS sensor and Leica Geosystems GIS DataPRO office software. With the integration of ERDAS and LH Systems in 2001, Leica Geosystems has expanded its product areas to offer four ranges of GIS and mapping solutions - airborne data acquisition, geographic imaging, GPS/GIS, and land information systems. Leica Geosystems' airborne sensors, field data collectors, work-stations and software help customers create and update GIS databases rapidly, accurately and cost effectively. The Leica Geosystems GS20The Leica Geosystems GS20 PDM Professional Data Mapper was conceived to provide the GIS community with a GPS data collection device that combined the simplicity of a recreational GPS handheld with the power and flexi-bility of a professional grade mapping system. The Leica Geosystems GS20 represents a true turnkey GPS/GIS mapping solution by integrating the GPS receiver and antenna within the chassis of handheld data collector. Add to this the built-in efficiency of BluetoothTM wireless tech-nology and you only need add power and sky; the rest is up to you.

GPS ReceiverThe GPS Receiver receives the GPS signal from the NAVSTAR satellites and calculates a range to all visible satellites.The Leica Geosystems GS20 is a 12-channel L1 code and phase handheld GPS receiver for professional data mapping.

See section "Technical Data".

Receiver HardwareIn most cases, a short introduction in the use of the Receiver will be provided by the local Leica Geosystems representative. If this is not the case proceed as outlined in the following sections.

Charge the BatteriesYour Leica Geosystems GS20 is powered by a recharge-able 7.2 V, Li-Ion battery. Note that a new battery's full performance is achieved only after two or three complete charge and discharge cycles. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times but it will eventually wear out. When the operation time is noticeably shorter than normal, it is time to buy a new Leica Geosystems GEB90 Li-Ion Battery. The Leica Geosystems GEB90 batteries may be charged using the Leica Geosystems GKL24 Dual Bay Battery Charger. Please find more information about your Leica Geosystems Dual Bay Battery Charger in the GKL24 User Manual (included).One battery, fully charged, will power the GS20 for about 7 hours continuously. Operating times will be shorter when working in cold weather.

Set Up the Equipment For best performance GPS data collection requires undis-turbed satellite signal reception. This means GPS Receivers work best in locations which are free of obstruc-tions.Press and release the Power Button located on lower left of the keyboard. The unit will reply with an audible tone, then proceed to a splash screen and then to the Main Menu.Your Leica Geosystems GS20 is now fully ready for oper-ation.When you consider to work in wireless real time the Leica Geosystems "WoRCS", Wireless Real-time Corrections System, for the DGPS is needed. The Leica Geosystems "WoRCS" consists of a belt-mounted communication hub, power supply and differen-tial module and gives you everything you need to become a self-contained mobile data collection system for real time.With built-in Bluetooth communications technology, you'll have the ability to make wireless connections to external devices such as DGPS, cellular phones, laser rangefinders and Personal Data Assistants (PDAs).Please find the full settings in the Field Guide.

Post-processing softwareThe Post-processing software is used to process the observations taken by the Receiver in order to compute baselines and coordinates.

Leica Geosystems GIS DataPRO Static Kinematic soft-ware is the standard post-processing software for Leica Geosystems receivers, for GIS data collection. Please refer to the GIS DataPRO Software reference manual to get detailed description.

3. Getting Started with the new GPS equipment

Introduction“Getting Started with New GPS Equipment” is designed to help get the beginning user up and running with their new Leica Geosystems GS20.For more information about setup, features and operations of the Leica Geosystems GS20, please refer to the “GS20 Field Manual".

The Leica Geosystems GIS solution is composed of both hardware and software components. The hardware consists of the Leica Geosystems GS20 sensor. This is used in the field to collect and record spatial (position) and non-spatial attributes. The software consists of GIS DataPRO. The Leica Geosystems GIS DataPRO office software is

comprised of a GPS post-processing system and data editing functionality that works in the native ESRI shapefile format.

Leica Geosystems GIS DataPRO Post-processing soft-ware

Leica Geosystems GIS DataPRO is used for data collec-tion preparation and data post processing. Please refer to the “Getting Started with the GIS DataPRO Office Soft-ware” User Manual for more details. To install the GIS DataPRO software:1 Insert the CD-ROM into the CD drive of your PC.2 Execute the “Setup” command.3 Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Both a hardware and software user manual can be found on the CD in PDF format. The software itself contains a comprehensive online Help System.

After the data is collected in the field, the GIS DataPRO office software allows you to import, edit and export the data to your GIS or CAD system. The software can also be used to design codelists which allow you to customize the field data collection process to suit your needs. To learn more about the Leica Geosystems GIS DataPRO office software, please consult the “Getting Started with the GIS DataPRO Office Software" User Manual.

Receiver HardwareLeica Geosystems GS20 SensorThe Leica Geosystems GS20 is a handheld GPS receiver for professional data mapping. With the position and the field data the user is capable to collect Data for his needs in his GIS application. The GPS receiver receives the GPS signal from the NAVSTAR satellites and calculates a range to all visible satellites.

The Leica Geosystems GS20 is a 12-channel L1 code and phase GPS receiver. The standard Leica Geosystems GS20 does record phase measurements for post processing purposes. Phase measurements are also used internally to smooth pseudorange measurements for higher code positioning. Phase measurement recording for post processing is available.

There are three external antennas available with the Leica Geosystems GS20, in addition to the internal:• AT501 – tracks L1 only.• RTB Combined Antenna - tracks L1 and RTCM differ-

ential signal from public and private beacon infastruc-ture.

• RTS Combined Antenna - tracks L1 and differential signals from Racal DGPS Satellite systems.

Please refer to the Field Guide for the use of your Leica Geosystems GS20 equipment.

Powering Up the UnitThe GS20 operates on a single battery. Once a battery is fully charged, you are ready to power up the GS20.

1. Open the GS20 Battery door by turning the door latch 90 degrees counterclockwise, and pull open the battery door.

2. Place the battery in the well with the gold contacts facing down and making contact.

3. Shut the battery door and return the latch to the locked position, with the spin arrow facing upward toward the dot on the housing.

4. On the keypad, depress the Power Button in the Lower Left corner, just left of the 0 key. Startup will be followed by an audible tone, then after a memory check (2 to 3 seconds) the GS20 Splash Screen will be followed by the Main Menu.

5. Once the Main Menu appears, the receiver will begin to search and acquire satellites.

Make sure that the GS20 has a clear view of the sky!

Initially the GPS unit will not have an Almanac (The almanac is a library of satellite orbits, that helps the GPS locate the satellites more quickly). When using the unit for the first time, or after a long period without use, it may take several minutes to acquire a position; this is known as a “Cold Start”.

Please refer to the GS20 Field Guide for information on basic functions and getting started with collecting data.

GS20 with the WoRCSIf you purchased the Leica Geosystems GS20 with the Wireless real-time Correction System, the WoRCS, you are only steps away from collecting real-time sub-meter data. The WoRCS comes pre-configured with the Blue-tooth linked to your GS20.

Powering On the WoRCS1. The Bluetooth Module is the only belt item with config-

urable controls. By Default, Power should be set to On, and Line should be set to Bluetooth.

2. Follow the procedure listed previously for charging the batteries. Once the batteries are fully charged, you can place them in any of the three bays of the battery insert shown below. The battery insert is both hot swappable and self-switching. The batteries will be drawn down from bay one to bay three without interruption in power.

Checking the Bluetooth LinkIf your Bluetooth link is successfully connected, a status message “Bluetooth Link Restored” will appear at the bottom of the screen. You can now proceed to Checking the real-time Link; if not follow the steps listed below.1. Power on the GS20 and select 4 Auxiliary, 4 Hard-

ware, and the Wireless Selection.

2. Expand the Wireless tree, expand the Bluetooth, and view WoRCS.

3. If the GS20 has been linked to the WoRCS Bluetooth Module (see page 39), an address that corresponds to the address on the top of the Bluetooth Module will appear. If the address does not correspond, press menu and select clear.

4. If the address area displays zeros, you will need to establish a connection.

5. Highlight the WoRCS branch and press enter; this will take you to the Bluetooth Setup screen.

6. Press Inquire and wait until the Cancel button becomes Inquire again.

7. You will see the Available Devices in the choice list. By highlighting the available devices and pressing Enter, you will see the entire list of available bluetooth devices in the choice list. If multiple devices have been found, select the device that matches your WoRCS bluetooth address, displayed on the top of the bluetooth module.

8. Finally, press the Menu key and Save, then Escape back to the main menu.

Ensure batteries are charged and correctly inserted. Ensure bluetooth module is set to line and on. The single flashing red light indicates that power is available. When the light changes to green a BLUE-TOOTH connection is established but no data is exchanged. When both green lights are flashing data is exchanged.

Checking the WoRCS Real-time LinkOnce the Bluetooth Link is established, you will need to make sure that your real-time device is linked and active. If the status message “Reference Data is Available” appears, setup is complete, and there is no need to proceed any further. Otherwise, follow the steps of the status check below.WoRCS Real-time Beacon

1. From the Main Menu select Status. Expand the Interfaces branch and select Real-Time. If you have communication with the Real-time Beacon module (RTB), you will see information about the frequency, signal strength etc; otherwise, you will see all zero values.

The real-time screen does not refresh automatically; to refresh the values, you will need to escape and re-enter.

2. If the Real-time values are all zero, there is no commu-nication to the real-time beacon module. So you will need to verify the configuration.

3. Escape to the Main Menu and select 5 Setup. Verify the user-defined configuration named “WRCSBEACON” is selected; if WRCSBEACON exists and is not selected, highlight and press Enter, otherwise select the default “Beacon”.

4. Press Enter again on the selected configuration to edit the setup values.

5. Expand the Interfaces branch, highlight the Real-time branch and press enter.

6. Make sure the Device is set to RTB, and the port is set to WoRCS2.

7. Escape and save the values, then escape and save the configuration.

If you are editing a default configuration, you will be prompted to provide a configuration name.

8. Escape to the main menu, and return to the status/Interface/Real-time branch to check the status of the real-time device. You should now see values for the frequency, bitrate, etc.

Real-Time Satellite (Racal)Real-Time satellite or Racal will follow the same testing scheme as Beacon, with the following exceptions.1. Status screen displays different parameters2. Station = -1 means the Racal Unit does not have a

subscription. You will need to contact Racal-LandStar to check the status of your subscription. To find the office nearest you, visit www.thales-tracs.com

3. Setup should have Device=RTS, and Port=WoRCS1.

Setting Up the External Antenna, WoRCS Ra-cal, and WoRCS RTB ExternalAlthough the WoRCS Belt comes pre-configured, there will be a few additional steps necessary to configure the external antenna.Setup the Chest Strap1. Snap sash to the belt.

– To snap, press end away from the "Spot" down, and press on the spot.

– To unsnap, lift on spot.2. Place the antenna rod in the belt socket and fasten to

the sash using the velcro band.3. Place sash over the right shoulder.4. Fasten the belt buckle.5. Bring the chest strap under the left arm and fasten.

Installation of the USB Bluetooth ModuleInstallation of the USB Bluetooth Module for data transfer between the GS20 and GIS DataPRO, is only for the initial setup, and will not have to be repeated.It is necessary to load GIS DataPRO 2.1 or higher to take advantage of the Bluetooth support. Once GIS DataPRO is installed, follow the following steps.1. Plug in the USB Bluetooth Module. Windows will bring

up a New Hardware Interface Dialog

2. Windows will then ask for the location of the driver SS1BTUSB.SYS

3. This is found in the Program Files/Leica Geosystems/GIS DataPRO directory; select Browse to find the file.

4. By Default, GIS DataPRO creates a Bluetooth "Virtual Port" on the next available Com Port. It will be necessary to configure the virtual Com Port manually if your computer is using any Com ports 6 or above.

If your highest Com Port is 5 or below, please proceed to step number 5

Note that USB is not compatible with Windows NT.

Manually Configuring the Bluetooth Virtual Port

• Before opening GIS DataPRO, check your current Com Port Status in the Control Panel \ System; Hardware Tab and Device manager. If your Com Ports are lower than 5, GIS DataPRO will configure normally. Please refer to the GIS DataPRO User Manual for more details.

• If you have a high Com Port, check to see what Com Ports between 2 and 6 are open.

• In the Start bar, Programs, Leica GIS DataPRO, select Setup Virtual Com.

• If the Com is above 6, you will need to remove it.

To remove a Com Port, highlight the com in the current virtual Com window, and select the Remove button.

• Open the Setup Virtual Com again, then enter the next available Com in the Start field.

5. Once the Com Port is set, follow the steps below to create a link between the GS20 and GIS DataPRO

• Open GIS DataPRO• From the pulldown menu, select Tools and choose

General Settings.• In General Settings set the Sensor Type to GS20• From the pulldown menu, select Tools and Sensor

Transfer

• Right click on the Sensor Folder, choose Settings.

• In the Settings dialog, choose the appropriate Com Port, which is denoted by Virtual Port to the left of the select box. (It is not necessary to set the baud rate ).

6. Power on the GS20 and select 4 Auxiliary, 4 Hard-ware, and the Wireless Tree Selection.

7. Expand the Wireless tree, expand the Bluetooth, and view Sensor Transfer.

8. If the GS20 has been linked to the WoRCS Bluetooth Module, you will see an address corresponding to the address on the top of the WoRCS Bluetooth Module.

9. If the address area displays zeros, you will need to create a connection.

10.Highlight the Sensor Transfer branch and press enter; this will take you to the inquiry screen.

11.Press inquire and wait until the Cancel button becomes Inquire again.

12.You will see the Available Devices in the choice list. By entering the choice list, you will see the entire device name or address. Additionally, if multiple devices have been found, you can select the device that matches your USB Bluetooth address.

13.Press Manu and Save, and then exit back to the main menu.

Checking the Link1. In the GS20 Main Menu, Select 4 Auxiliary, 6 Utilities,

3 Sensor Transfer.2. A Warning will appear notifying you all jobs will be

saved and closed. Select yes to proceed.

3. The port should be set to Bluetooth, otherwise select Bluetooth and press Apply.

4. On your PC, in DataPRO Sensor Transfer, right click on the Sensor folder and select “Read Content”

5. You should then see a progress bar indicating that the sensor is being read

4. Care and Transport

TransportWhen dispatching the equipment, always use the complete original Leica Geosystems packaging (case and cardboard box).

When transporting the equipment in the field, always make sure that you:• either carry the product in its original transport case• or carry the tripod with its legs splayed across your

shoulder, keeping the attached product upright.

Never carry the product loose in a road vehicle. It can be affected by shock and vibration. Always carry it in its case and secure it.

When transporting the equipment by rail, air or ship, always use the complete original Leica Geosystems pack-aging (case and cardboard box), or its equivalent, to protect it against shock and vibration.

StorageTemperature limits(-40°C to +70°C / -40°F to +158°F) Respect the temperature limits when storing the equipment, particularly in summer if the equipment is inside a vehicle.

Cleaning and dryingUse only a clean, soft, lint-free cloth for cleaning. If necessary, moisten the cloth with pure alcohol.

Use no other liquids; these may attack the polymer compo-nents.

Damp products must be unpacked. Dry the product, the case, the foam inserts and the accessories at not more than 40°C / 108°F and clean them. Do not repack until everything is completely dry.

Cables and plugsKeep plugs clean and dry. Blow away any dirt lodged in the plugs of the connecting cables. Unplugging connecting cables or removing the memory card during the measurement may cause loss of data. Always switch off the product before removing the cables or the memory card.

� WARNING:The absence of instruction, or the inadequate imparting of instruction, can lead to incorrect or adverse use, and can give rise to accidents with far-reaching human, material, financial and environ-mental consequences.

Precautions:All users must follow the safety directions given by the manufacturer and the directions of the person responsible for the product.

� WARNING:The charger must not be used under damp or inclement conditions. If moisture penetrates these devices, the user may receive an electric shock.

Precautions:Use the charger only indoors, in dry rooms. Protect them from damp. If the devices are damp, do not use them.

� WARNING:If you open the charger, either of the following actions may cause you to receive an electric shock:

� CAUTION:Watch out for erroneous measurements if the product has been dropped or has been misused, modified, stored for long periodes or transported.

Precautions:Periodically carry out test measurements and perform the field adjustments indicated in the user manual, particularly after the product has been subjected to abnormal use and before and after important measurements.

� WARNING:If computers intended for use indoors are used in the field there is a danger of electric shock.

Precautions:Adhere to the instructions given by the computer manufac-turer with regard to field use in conjunction with Leica Geosystems products.

� CAUTION:If the accessories used with the equipment are not properly secured and the equipment is subjected to mechanical shock (e.g. blows, falling), the equip-ment may be damaged or people may sustain injury.

Precautions:When setting-up the equipment, make sure that the acces-sories (e.g. tripod, tribrach, connecting cables) are correctly adapted, fitted, secured, and locked in position. Avoid subjecting the equipment to mechanical shock.

� CAUTION:The product uses the GPS P-Code signal, which by U.S. policy, may be switched off without notice.

� WARNING:Inadequate securing of the survey site can lead to dangerous situations, for example in traffic, on building sites and at industrial installations.

Precautions:Always ensure that the survey site is adequately secured. Adhere to the regulations governing accident prevention and road traffic.

� DANGER:Because of the risk of electrocution, it is very dangerous to use poles and extensions in the vicinity of electrical

installations such as power cables or electrical railways.Precautions:Keep at a safe distance from electrical installations. If it is essential to work in this environment, first contact the safety authorities responsible for the electrical installations and follow their instructions.

� CAUTION:During the transport or disposal of charged batteries it is possible for inappropriate mechanical influences to constitute a fire hazard.

Precautions:Before dispatching the equipment or disposing of it, discharge the batteries by running the product until they are flat.

� WARNING:If an External Antenna is not properly fitted to vehi-cles or any other means for transportation it can be torn off by mechanical shock, vibration or wind, possibly causing accident and injury.

Precautions:Attach the External Antenna professionally. The External Antenna must be secured additionally, e.g. by use of a safety cord. Ensure that the mounting device is correctly mounted and able to safely carry the weight of the External Antenna (>1kg).

� WARNING:If the equipment is improperly disposed of, the following can happen:

• If polymer parts are burnt, poisonous gases are produced which may impair health.

• If batteries are damaged or are heated strongly, they can explode and cause poisoning, burning, corrosion or environmental contamination.

• By disposing of the equipment irresponsibly you may enable unauthorized persons to use it in contravention of the regulations, exposing themselves and third parties to the risk of severe injury and rendering the environment liable to contamination.

Precautions:Dispose of the equipment appropriately in accordance with the regulations in force in your country. Always prevent access to the equipment by unauthorized personnel.

� DANGER:If the product is used in exposed locations (e.g. on masts, mountains or buildings), it is at risk from light-ning. Danger from high voltages also exists near power lines. Lightning, voltage peaks, or the touching of power lines can cause damage, injury and death.

Precautions:• Do not use the product in a thunderstorm as you may

increase the risk of being struck by lightning.• Be sure to remain at a safe distance from electrical

installations. Do not use the product directly under or in close proximity to power lines. If it is essential to work in such an environment contact the local statutory regula-tory bodies responsible for electrical installations and follow their instructions.

• If the product has to be permanently mounted in an exposed location, it is advisable to provide a lightning conductor system. A suggestion on how to design a lightning conductor for the product is given hereinafter.

• Always follow the regulations in force in your country with regard to grounding Antennas and masts. These installations must be carried out by an authorised specialist.

• To prevent damages due to indirect lightning strikes (voltage spikes) cables (antenna, power source, modem, ...) should be protected with appropriate protection elements (lightning arrestor). These installa-

tions must be carried out by an authorized, local specialist.

• Additional protection against lightning: If there is a risk of a thunderstorm, or if the equipment is to remain unused and unattended for a long period, protect your product additionally by unplugging all systems components and disconnecting all connecting cables and supply cables (e.g. Receiver - Antenna).

Suggestion for design of a Lightning Conductor for a GPS System

1. On non-metallic structuresProtection by Air Terminals is recommended. An Air Terminal is a pointed solid or tubular rod of conducting material with proper mounting and connection to a conductor. The position of 4 Air Terminals should be uniformly distributed around the Antenna at a distance equal to the height of the Air Terminal. The Air Terminal diameter should be 12mm for copper or 15mm for aluminium. The height of the Air Terminals should be 25 to 50cm. All Air Terminals should be connected to the down conductors. The diameter of the Air Terminal should be kept to a minimum to reduce GPS signal shading.

2. On metallic structuresProtection is as described for non-metallic structures, but the Air Terminals can be connected directly to the conducting structure without the need for down conduc-tors.

Charge batteries only at an ambient temperature between 10°C and 30°C (50°F to 86°F). We recommend a temperature of 0°C to +20°C (32°F to 68°F) for storing the batteries. Exposing batteries above 70 °C may present a risk of personal injury from fire, explosion, leakage, or excess heat.

� WARNING:Do not short-circuit the battery. Accidental short cir-cuiting can occur when a metallic object (coin, clip or pen) causes direct connection of the + and - termi-nals of the battery. Electromagnetic Compatability (EMC)The term "electromagnetic compatability" is taken to mean the capability of the product to function smoothly in an envi-ronment where electromagnetic radiation and electrostatic discharges are present, and without causing electromag-netic disturbances to other equipment.

� WARNING:Electromagnetic radiation can cause disturbances in other equipment.

Although the product meets the strict regulations and standards which are in force in this respect, Leica Geosys-tems cannot completely exclude the possibility that other equipment may be disturbed.

� CAUTION:There is a risk that disturbances may be caused in other equipment if the product is used in conjunction with accessories from other manufacturers, e.g. field computers, personal computers, walkie-talkies, non-standard cables, external batteries.

Precautions:Use only the equipment and accessories recommended by Leica Geosystems. When combined with the product, they meet the strict requirements stipulated by the guidelines and standards. Although the product meets the strict regulations and standards which are in force in this connection, Leica Geosystems cannot completely exclude the possibility that the product may be disturbed by very intense electromag-netic radiation, e.g. near radio transmitters, walkie-talkies, diesel generators. Check the plausibility of results obtained under these conditions.

� WARNING:If the product is operated with connecting cables attached at only one of their two ends (e.g. external supply cables, interface cables), the permitted level of electromagnetic radiation may be exceeded and the correct functioning of other products may be impaired.

Precautions:While the product is in use, connecting cables (e.g. product to external battery, product to computer) must be connected at both ends.
