    Complex City Economy

Capitalism II offers the player w ith an optional ec onomic simulation modecalled Complex City Economy w hich provides the player the challenges ofoperating a business in a highly dynamic ec onomy. Complex City Economycan be enabled or disabled in the Custom Game Setupscreens Environmenttab.

With Complex City Economyenabled, the first thing you notic e is the displaysof the following economic indic ators in the mini-map window .

Spending Level indicates the ability andw illingness of consumers to spend. A moredeveloped city w ill have a higher Spending Levelthan a less developed one. It is also affected by

the citys economic climate, whic h is describedbelow.

The demands of all products are affec ted by acitys Spending Level at different degrees.Products with a high necessity index (e.g.toothpaste) are less affected by Spending Levelthan those with a low necessity index (e.g. cars.)A produc ts necessity index can be seen in theProduct Detail Report.

Salary Level indicates the labor c ost of the city. One good w ay to increaseprofitability is to set up production in areas of low labor cost, while exportingto cities with a more wealthy consumer base. Salary Level is also affectedby the citys economic c limate.

Economic Climate can be Boom, Prosperous, Norma l, Recession or Panic . A

city w ith a booming economy benefits all business activities w ith higherconsumer demands (indicated by Spending Level). On the other hand, laborcost also tends to inc rease in the midst of a booming ec onomy, thusincreasing the c ost of operating a business (indicated by Salary Level).

You should pay close attention to the se economic indicators, wh ich all varyfrom city to city and over time, w hen selecting a city in whic h to build a newfirm. In a city in recession, businesses suffer. Building a large departmentstore in a city with a panic ec onomy is a recipe for financ ial losses andfailure. To avoid this, you must keep a w atchful eye on these ec onomicindicators.

    3029

Business startups will help stimulate a c itys economy and improve itseconomic climate. Conversely, closures of businesses w ill negatively affecta citys economy and excessive business closures may drag a city into arecession. As such, if you invest aggressively in a city by building new firms, the positive effect it brings to the ec onomy may in turn benefit all of yourbusinesses in the c ity.
