About Sam & Max Hit the Road

Welcome, Crimestompers! Before wehit the road with Sam & Max inpursuit of hyperthyroid thugs andsinister Sasquatch-nappers, you need afew facts on the case from the files ofthe Freelance Police:

It started simply enough with a callfrom the Commissioner. Soon Sam &Max were screaming down thehighway (they have to scream sincetheir siren broke) to the Kushman Bros.Carnival, where they learned thatBruno the Bigfoot and Trixie theGiraffe-Necked Girl had disappeared. They soon discovered this was part of alarger pattern of bigfootdisappearances, and all the clues wouldtake them on a meandering rompacross tacky U.S. tourist traps.

Solving this case is up to you! Youdirect the actions of Sam & Max, tearingdown the road with mayhem on theirminds and Corn Duds on their breath,on a peril-fraught mission to make theworld safe for Sasquatches and sentientmammals everywhere!

If this is your first computeradventure game, be prepared for anentertaining challenge. Be patient, evenif it takes a while to figure out some ofthe puzzles. If you get stuck, you mightwant to solve another puzzle first, findand use a new object, or highway surffor a while. Stick with it and use yourimagination you and the FreelancePolice will eventually bag yourperpetrator!

    Our Game Design Philosophy

We believe that you buy games to beentertained, not to be whacked over thehead every time you make a mistake. Sowe dont bring the game to ascreeching halt when you poke yournose into a place you havent visitedbefore. Unlike conventional computeradventures, you wont find yourselfaccidentally stepping off a path, or

dying because youve picked up a sharpobject.

We think youd prefer to solve thegames mysteries by exploring anddiscovering, not by dying a thousanddeaths. We also think you like to spendyour time involved in the story, nottyping in synonyms until you stumbleupon the computers word for a certainobject.

Dont worry well never punish youfor selecting the wrong or funnydialogue function. After all, youreplaying this game to have fun, arentyou? Well, arent you?!?!

Function KeysTo save your progress in a game,

enabling you to turn the computer offand start again later in the same place, use the save feature. Simply press theSave/Load Game function key (F1 or F5on most computers see your referencecard for more information).

To load a game you have saved, usethe Save/Load Game function key anytime after Sam & Max Hit the Road hasstarted.

To bypass a cut-scene, press the ESCkey, or press both mouse/joystickbuttons at once. See your computerreference card for details. After youveplayed Sam & Max Hit the Road severaltimes (and who wouldnt), you maywant to use this function to skip overscenes you have seen before.

To restart the game from thebeginning, press the key indicated onyour reference card (F8 on mostcomputers).

To pause the game, press the SPACEBAR. Press it again to resume play.

To adjust the speed of the MessageLine to suit your reading speed, pressthe keys indicated on your referencecard (+ and - on most computers). When

youve finished reading a line ofdialogue, you can press the Done key(the period . on most computers) toclear the line and proceed (this does notwork if the characters are speaking indigitized voice).

Use the keys indicated on yourreference card to adjust the musicvolume (hard brackets [ and ] onmost computers) and the digital soundvolume (semicolon ; and apostrophe on most computers). If your soundcard has a volume control, make sure itis set higher than level zero beforeusing the keyboard controls to fine-tunethe volume level.

To quit the game, press the keycombination indicated on yourreference card (Alt-X on mostcomputers). If you plan to return to thegame youre presently playing, remember to save the game beforequitting.

Screen SaversDont panic if you get up to answer

the phone and when you come back itlooks as if your screen is melting or hasbeen invaded by tiny Sams & Maxes. Wehave included as a *special freefeature* a number of entertainingscreen savers to protect your monitor.Merely click your mouse, andeverything should return to normal. Ifnot, then you can panic.
