Our History

Mansfield University dates to 1857 when the Mansfield Classical Seminary opened with 105 students. In 1862 the institution was designated a State Normal School for the training of teachers. Enrollment had grown to 400

by 1905. In 1927, Mansfield became the first school in Pennsylvania to be designated a State Teachers College, authorized by the State Board of Education to grant bachelor of science degrees in elementary and secondary education, music, and home economics. In 1960, the school became Mansfield State College, a multi-purpose institution offering a broad range of curricula. On July 1, 1983, Mansfield University came into being as a unit of the State System of Higher Education. Mansfield University has twenty-eight active baccalaureate degree programs, six associate degree programs, and five master’s programs, with a fall 2014 enrollment of 2,587 undergraduates and 165 graduate students, for a total enrollment of 2,752 students.

Lieutenant Colonel Jim Reese, U.S. Army (Retired), '89 U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Jim Reese, a 1989 Mansfield graduate, is founder,

chairman and chief executive officer of TigerSwan, an international security and global stability firm. Before founding TigerSwan, Reese served 25 years in the Army and his military commitment

began while an ROTC cadet at Mansfield.Reese came to Mansfield in 1982 as a football recruit and joined the Army ROTC program

and the National Guard his freshman year. After his junior year, Reese enlisted in the US Army Airborne Ranger Program where he spent three years and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. In 1988, the Army sent Reese back to Mansfield to finish his degree and the ROTC program. He was the Mansfield ROTC cadet battalion commander and was the General Marshall awardee for the ROTC region as the top cadet. Reese graduated in May 1989 with a communications degree and was commissioned as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army.

Reese rose quickly through the ranks and distinguished himself in the 75th Ranger Regiment and “Delta Force,” the U.S. elite counter-terrorist force. He has advised international leaders on six continents and served in contingency operations in the Balkans and Colombia and combat operations in both Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Immediately following 9/11, the U.S. Secretary of Defense selected Reese to serve as the lead advisor for Special Operations to the Director of the CIA for operational planning and integration of CIA and military special operation elements in the invasion of Afghanistan and Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2003, the U.S. General designated as the Combined Forces Coalition Commander personally requested Reese to be his primary advisor for the integration of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) for the Iraq invasion.

Reese retired from “Delta Force” in 2007. He took his experience and leadership and became the director of security operations for a multi-billion-dollar international Fortune 100 Company. Reese was responsible for implementing and reorganizing the security apparatus of the company as well as the organizations critical infrastructure, maritime, aviation and personal-security operations.

In 2008, Reese was specifically recruited to lead the U.S. Department of States, Diplomatic Security and High Threat Security Services for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Also in 2008, Reese’s entrepreneurship formulated the founding principles and vision for the establishment of TigerSwan, a global security and stability consultancy that advises clients on procedural, behavioral and internal conditions for the creation of adaptive security solutions within an asymmetric global threat environment, which he launched a year later. Today, TigerSwan operates in 46 countries with several hundred employees providing services to organizations and individuals domestically and abroad.

Reese is a frequent speaker at industry events and organizations focusing on stability, international crisis, change leadership and execution as a value proposition. In September of 2014, he was hired by CNN as a Global Affairs Analyst to provide insight and expertise in areas dealing with instability and international relations.

In addition to his BA in Communications from Mansfield, Reese earned a Fellowship degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for International Studies (CIS) in U.S. national security and foreign policy.

Reese and his wife Niki have two daughters, Hali and Keevyn.

Mansfield University Graduation Coin

The Mansfield University Graduation Coin was inspired by the President’s Coin for Excellence, and designed by alumnus Yukta Sagar (Graphic Arts, ’14). The front of the coin features North Hall, one of the first campus buildings and an enduring

symbol of Mansfield University. The red and black rolling hills are Mansfield University school colors and symbols of the region. The 15 red and black circles represent our diversity and the community of students, faculty, staff and alumni who make Mansfield a special place, as well as the original 15 alumni from the first graduating class.

The back of the coin features our Creed, and the names the University has held. The diamond in the center echoes the four tenets of the Creed; Character, Scholarship, Service and Culture. The attached tassel is a recognition of graduates of the institution. Finally, the rope surrounding the creed is a symbol of the bonds that we all build at Mansfield University that hold us together well past graduation.

The Student Government Association sponsors a coin for each graduate. SGA also awards four faculty and staff members, representing the four tenets of the Creed, with the current year’s coin for their service to Mansfield University students. (Graduates and Alumni can also purchase additional coins for this year, or their year of graduation through the Mountie Den on campus).

Graduation Coin 2015 Recipients Ms. Michelle Schlegel, Dr. Bruce E. Carpenter, Glen Lattimer, and Kevin Starks

*The Processional and RecessionalThe processional and recessional are traditional parts of the Commencement ceremony that symbolize the

relationship between faculty and students. In the processional, students process through the ranks of the faculty, giving faculty the opportunity to show their respect and congratulations to their students.

Please take your seat by 9:45 a.m. and remain seated throughout the processional, ceremony, and recessional, leaving all aisles clear. You are invited to meet your graduate near the entrance to the gymnasium once the recessional is completed.

Academic AttireThe traditional attire worn at Commencement exercises indicate the academic achievement of the

individuals taking part in the ceremony. Its use, which originated at English and European universities during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries came to the United States in 1754 with the founding of Kings College (now Columbia University).

In 1895 the Intercollegiate Commission, a group of leading American educators, met at Columbia to draft a code to regulate the design of gowns and hoods for various degrees and to fix the colors indicating the various academic disciplines. This code has been adopted by most colleges and universities in the United States. It was revised in 1932 and again in 1959.

Gowns: The color as well as cut of the gowns varies. Although most doctoral gowns are black, some are the color of the university conferring the degree. The doctoral gown is trimmed in velvet with three two-inch bars on the sleeves and a five-inch border extending from the back of the neck down the two sides in front. Although usually black, the velvet may be of a color indicating the nature of the degree. Masters’ and Bachelors’ gowns have no such trim.

The level of degree held is indicated by the cut of the gown. Doctoral gowns have full sleeves which are round and open. Gowns worn by Bachelors have long pointed sleeves and those worn by Masters have long, closed fuller sleeves, which reach nearly to the wearer’s knees. The arm goes through a slit giving the appearance of short sleeves.

Hoods: The hood seems to have had a more practical origin. During the Middle Ages monks wore hoods to protect their tonsured heads in the winter and as a container to collect alms. It is the most significant part of academic attire. Its shape and size indicate the degree of the wearer. The color of the velvet border indicates the academic field. The lining represents the colors of the institution granting the degree. The Bachelor’s hood is three feet long and has a two-inch velvet border; the Master’s hood is three and one-half feet long and has a three inch border; and the Doctor’s hood is four feet with a five inch border. The Mansfield University hood is lined with red and black stripes.

Traditional Colors: Representative colors that one often sees are:Black ....................................................................... Associates Pink ................................................................................MusicCitron ...........................................Social Science, Social Work Light blue .................................................................EducationWhite............................................................. Arts and Letters Apricot ........................................................................NursingGold .....................Science, Computer & Information Science Drab ...................................................Business Administration

Mortarboards: The mortarboard cap evolved from the skull cap worn by monks of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It is usually black. Tassels are worn over the left front quarter by degree holders; candidates wear the tassel over the right front quarter.

The Presidential Medallion: In the early 1980’s, a Mansfield State College Commencement Committee enlisted the expertise of two faculty members to design a presidential medallion and neckpiece in honor of the institution’s designation effective July 1, 1983 as Mansfield University. Mr. Thomas H. Loomis, a faculty member in the Art Department, designed and fashioned the metal portion of the medallion using the Pennsylvania State seal as a base. Mrs. Mary Lee Trowbridge, a faculty member in the Home Economics Department, designed the neckpiece in red velvet with black stitching. The gold color base of the medallion, together with the neckpiece highlighting the institutional colors of red and black, symbolize the proud traditions of the university.
