MANN+HUMMEL EDM filters: The sum of highquality components.
In the development of new filters priority is given to thecomponents such as the filtermedium, the external casingand the end cap.
Filter medium
The most important part ofan EDM filter is the filtermedium. This is individuallymatched to the high require-ments of the EDM process in the MANN+HUMMELdevelopment laboratories.
At the begin of the develop-ment of the medium a specialMANN+HUMMEL test process examines the dirtparticles from an EDMmachine. This test quicklyindicates whether a mediumis suitable for the respectiveEDM application in respect of the dirt holding capacity,filter fineness and service life.
The MANN+HUMMEL rangeof media for EDM filterscovers a filter fineness rangefrom 1 to 25 µm.
MANN+HUMMEL alwaysoffers the right medium –whether the material to bemachined is tool steel oraluminium. The MANN+HUMMEL exper-tise in the field of impregnationand consistent curing of themedium ensures the pressu-re stability of the filter paper.In the MANN+HUMMEL development laboratory tests are conducted
on an EDM machine to examine the service life and filtration quality.

External casing and endcaps
Important quality factors forthe external casing and theend caps are the pressurestability, resistance to corro-sion and chemical stability inconnection with the dielectricfluid. In addition, the materialmust not allow any undesira-ble ions to enter the dielectricfluid. A low housing weight isa further aspect which pro-
vides lower transportation anddisposal costs. Light filtersoffer advantages to operatorsfor machine maintenance. Thedevelopment and testing la-boratories of MANN+HUMMELare comprehensively equip-ped with testing facilities andan EDM machine to enabletests to be made under fieldconditions.
The choice of the right filter medium is the basic requirement for theideal function of the filter. MANN+HUMMEL determines the correctchoice of medium in the company's own testing laboratory.
One as exact as the next – special pleat geometry allows the realisa-tion of a large filter surface area in the smallest space.

MANN+HUMMEL – Innovative production
The development of high performance filter media isthe first step in productionand just as crucial for theperformance of the filter inthe field is the quality of theprocessing. In the productionthe filter medium is pleated,pressed into a special struc-ture and cured.
Star-pleated filters can bemanufactured with differentpleat heights. In order tomaximise service life andbest utilise the availableinstallation space,MANN+HUMMEL usesmacro pleating and double-bellows technology.
Macro-pleating technology isa special production processenabling higher pleats whichdo not prematurely sticktogether during operation.
These paper pleats areimpregnated and given aspecial structure which sepa-rates the pleats and enableshigh stability. The result ishigh operational reliabilityover the whole life of the filter.
The double-bellows techno-logy also provides a longerservice life. Utilising advan-ced pleating geometry,MANN+HUMMEL is able tomaximise the amount of fil-tration surface area in agiven size.
A filter is only as good as its filter medium. Therefore the developmentof modern, high performance materials is a top priority forMANN+HUMMEL.

At the end of the production process a visual inspection ensures thatonly perfectly produced filters are delivered to the customer.
Innovative: butt-welding to ensure an adhesive-free connection of thepaper bellows and filter end cap.

The production processesand technology used atMANN+HUMMEL are provenand reliable. The result is anabsolutely consistent andhigh product quality.In addition, processes arerationalised. For example,the adhesive dosing is com-puter-controlled and at theend of the production processthe products are stacked ona pallet using a robot.
The MANN+HUMMEL Markl-kofen production location inGermany is the largest plantin the world producing filterelements. Here productionengineers are working toimprove and perfect proces-ses. A number of innovativeexamples are the butt-wel-ding process which enablesthe adhesive-free connectionof the paper bellow and filterend cap or the laser weldingused to realise a pressureresistant assembly of metalfilter housings.
