INDIA-ISRAEL: STRONG ALLIANCE;Strategic Partnership
“No Indian leader in 3,000 years of our own sovereign existence and our history has visited Israel”, said Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu citing PM Narendra Modi’s visit to his nation in 2017. Marking the 25th anniversary of relations between India and Israel, the visiting PM kick-started his 6 day diplomatic tour to India on 14th January, 2018. Cementing the camaraderie between India and Israel, the government has rechristened the iconic Teen Murti Chowk in New Delhi as the ‘Teen Murti-Haifa Chowk’, paying a glowing tribute to the Israeli city of Haifa and the brave Indian soldiers who fought to liberate the city from the Ottoman empire during World War 1.
“You have brilliant people in India. We have brilliant people in Israel. What we can do, is shape the future together. I believe in India. We are your partners, and I came here to say today, Prime Minister Modi, thank you for believing in Israel the way we believe in India”, the Israel PM said addressing the summit. PM Modi said that India has ‘size and scale’ while Israel has ‘sharpness and edge’, and urged the delegates from over 100 Israeli companies to invest in India. He stressed on the potential of the India-Israel Innova-tion Bridge will act as a link between the Start-ups of
the two sides, ably complemented by the Startup India mission. A call for joint Research and Devel-opment projects under the ‘India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund (i4F)’ was launched to combine the talent pool of the two countries in pursuit of path-breaking technological solutions with commercial opportunities. It is noteworthy to mention that this is the largest business delegation that has ever accompanied an Israeli PM on an official visit.
During the joint statement, Netanyahu hailed PM Modi as a “revolutionary” leader and said he and the people of Israel are honoured and moved by the welcome celebra-tion. PM Modi reminded the nation about the mutual promise between the Israel PM and him to build a strate-gic partnership of hope and trust and progress of diverse and cutting-edge cooperation, and of joint endeavours and shared successes.

After his visit to Agra, Israel PM Netanyahu came back to Delhi on 16th January, 2018 to inaugurate the Raisina Dialogue, an annual flagship geo-political conference, in the presence of PM Narendra Modi. The Israel PM was all praise for his Indian counterpart’s efforts to cut the bureaucratic red tape and said he was astounded to know that PM Modi led India to an increase in the Ease of doing business by 42 ranks, in just three years.
This visit by the Israeli PM and the increasing bond between the two heads of nations and the people of the respective nations is a historic step towards an impeccable partnership between the two nations. The mutual respect and admiration for the nations have been effectively communicated by both the leaders and this relationship is build-ing itself to be one of the most powerful strategic alliance between two strong nations.
The visiting PM further said that to become an economic power, a country has to simplify and reduce taxes and mentioned how his country has benefitted from such reforms. It is worth noting that the recent tax reform in the form of GST complements the words of the Israeli PM. He even spoke on the importance of startups and their role in the development of Israel and said “The future belongs to those who innovate.” He also expressed his high regard for India at the international level and remarked that “The weak don’t survive, the strong survive and you make alliance with the strong.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s visit to Gujarat focused on agriculture, irrigation, innovation and enterprise, sectors where India-Israel cooperation can yield excellent results. PM Netanyahu gifted a G.A.L-Mobile vehicle to the people of Sugiam in Banaskantha , a water desalinization and purification jeep the two country heads rode on Israel’s Olga beach during the Indian PM’s visit. Both the leaders visited the iCreate centre in Deo Dholera, Ahmedabad and also felicitated the winners of the India-Israel Innovation Challenge.

ATTRACTING FOREIGN INVESTMENT,Driving Economic Growth
The Government’s FDI policy can be summed up by our Prime Minister’s promise of “red carpet, not red tape” for investors. The FDI norms in various sectors have been liberalised since the government came into power and the results have been extremely encouraging.
It is important to note that the extant FDI policy
does allow 100% FDI for Single Brand Retail Trad-
ing through the Government approval route. The
decision to allow 100% FDI under automatic route
is aimed at greater ease of doing business in India.
It will save companies from submitting volumi-
nous levels of paperwork and the subsequent task
of getting approvals, which can take several
months. Along with this, the government has also
eased the local sourcing norms for the first five
years to ensure that the retail outlets can function
smoothly and optimise their operations. This will
lead to an increase in healthy competition within
the industry as well.
The Cabinet has also taken a step towards easing the disinvestment process of Air India by allow-ing foreign airlines to invest up to 49% under the Government approval route. This is expected to bring the financial muscle and expertise required to support a turnaround in the national carrier.
Another important decision was to clarify that real-estate broking service does not amount to real estate business and is therefore, eligible for 100% FDI under automatic route. The move will enable international brokerage companies set up their own subsidiaries here. This would create more jobs and offer professional services to property buyers.
As the World Bank stated, the Indian economy has “enormous growth potential” and the recent decision to further liberalise the FDI policy in key sectors is a step towards fulfilling that potential.
FDI is a very important driver of economic growth and a source of non-debt finance for an economy. These reforms will boost India's attractiveness as an investment destination and contribute to growth in income and employment.

Youth, by definition, is one who works towards his future goals, unmindful of the past
India’s objective is to give its youth the capabilities and skills to make this century an Indian century
The PM urged the youth to think of concrete objectives for the years 2019 and 2022 for the 150th anniversary year of Mahatma Gandhi and the 75th anniversary of Independence
There was a lot of propaganda against India in the Western world that Swami Vivekananda proved wrong. He also raised a voice against social evils.
It is India’s youth that is taking the Swachh Bharat Mission to new heights
Stating that Seva Bhav is a part of our culture, he said that all over India, there are several individuals and organisations selflessly serving society
The PM exhorted to work towards making our nation Open Defecation Free

NEW YEAR, NEW MILESTONES: ISRO launches 100th satellite into orbit
Execution In-Line
ISRO has carved a niche for itself in space communication projects and has been playing a significant role in the development of the nation. Creating history, ISRO successfully launched its 100th satellite along with 30 others in a single mission from Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh. Being the first space mission of 2018, PSLV-C40 took off with a weather observation Cartosat-2 series satellite. As an observational satellite, Cartosat will beam high-quality images for cartographic, urban and rural applications, regula-tion and utility management like road network monitoring.
Adding another feather to the cap, the achievement symbolizes the country’s bright future in its space programme. PM Narendra Modi on the success of the 100th satellite congratulated the organisation for achieving this milestone.

The ambitious programme of Digital India focuses on utilising technology to enable change and Bharat-
Net works as the very backbone of the programme. It aims to connect India by making it possible to take
Internet and telecommunication services to every nook and corner of the country. BharatNet, the
world’s largest rural broadband project envisages delivery of high-speed broadband services in over 2.5
lakh villages benefitting more than 200 million rural Indians.
A significant milestone under BharatNet was achieved by connecting over one lakh Gram Panchayats across the country with high speed optical fibre network as per the declared deadline of 31 Dec 2017. The project also achieved a global record of laying 800 kilometres of optical fibre per day.
Technology transforms people’s lives. From mitigating poverty to simplifying processes, ending corruption to pro-viding better services, Technology is omnipresent. It has become the single-most important instrument of human progress.

Historic move to protect fundamental rights of women: Lok Sabha passes Triple Talaq Bill
The Supreme Court, in a landmark judgement in August 2017 set aside the
practice of triple talaq. Following this landmark judgment, the Government led
by PM Narendra Modi introduced the (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill,
2017 in the Lok Sabha to empower women of the Muslim community and to
uphold gender equality and dignity. The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on
28th December 2017.
The Bill proposes to declare triple talaq by Muslim husbands, void and illegal. Additionally, it provides for subsistence allowance from the husband for the daily needs of the wife and, of the dependent children. The objective is to ensure the larger Constitutional goals of gender justice and gender equality of married Muslim women and help further their fundamental rights of non-dis-crimination and empowerment.
Doing away with a practice prevalent for several years, the government has decided to withraw the Haj subsidy funds by 2018. Instead, this money will be earmarked for education and welfare schemes, especially for the girl children of the minority community. This came as a swift action by the Government following the order of the Supreme Court in 2012, to gradually phase out the subsidy within 10 years.
The Government led by PM Modi has also increased the quota for Haj pilgrims from India by 5000, after discussions with the Saudi Arabian Gov-ernment. Earlier, the government also extracted the rule that women have to be accompanied by a male companion to go for Haj, thereby empowering the women to perform the pilgrimage independently.
