Dick Beardsley, Keynote Speaker Title of presentation: Staying the Course

Dick Beardsley, an accomplished marathoner and Olympian, is not only a best-selling author, but he is one of the worlds most extraordinary, respected, and compelling motivational / inspirational speakers. Dick speaks directly from his heart and is highly inspirational. He will be sharing inspiring sto-ries about his life and the challenges that he has persevered through that make him who he is today. The story of Dicks running career alone is the stuff of legends, but it is the story that comes after that draws people in and keeps them

listening. Dick is a true survivor. After retiring from running, Dick had a series of near fatal accidents that left him addicted to pain killers. His story of overcoming extreme obstacles speaks to anyone who loves competition, who has survived catastrophe, or who has pursued a seemingly impossible goal.

    Runner Safety

    Rules of the Road

Medical Personnel and Aid StationsThere are 12 medical aid stations along the marathon course, and a medical field station at the finish. Look on the course map for the medical symbol. Medical personnel will be available to assist.

Marathon PersonnelCommunication personnel and head course marshals will have radios and phones to contact emergency personnel quickly. All official marathon committee members will also be available.

Police OfficersOfficers will be located at all major intersections where traffic

intersects the course. They will also be patrolling the course. Please keep in mind this is not a closed course. You must still follow the rules of the road.

VolunteersThere are hundreds of volunteers on marathon weekend. Most are not associated with the event except for one weekend a year, so understand that they may not have the answers to all your questions. However, in an emergency, do not hesitate to go to them for assistance as they should know how to get help quickly.

No one is allowed on the course without a properly issued race number.

Help keep the course beautiful by not littering. Respect the property of others while specatating.

No vehicles of any kind are allowed on the course. The course can be crossed only at designated intersections.

Bikers should stay well off the course and watch for spectators as much as for runners.

Spectators must stay clear of the course and off the roads to avoid interfering with the participants.

Hold animals on a short leash. Keep them away from runners and be considerate of others.

Watch your children at all times. There will be thousands of participants and spectators at the events.

See maps for Lost Kids and Items booth locations.

Life is often compared to a marathon, but I think it is more like being a sprinter; long stretches of hard work punctuated by brief moments in which we are given the opportunity to perform at our best.

  • Tips for SpectatorsMake the Most of Your Marathon Weekend

There are activities throughout marathon weekend for athletes, friends and families to enjoy together. But when the horn blows Saturday morning, youve only got a few hours to find each other along the course and at the finish line. The easiest way to ensure you and your friends see each other is to plan ahead. Here is some advice for everyone on marathon day.

    On the Course

Map out where youll be ahead of time. Check out the great viewing spots on the next page.

Know what each other will be wearing, or carry a sign or balloon. Sometimes its easier for runners to spot spectators than the other way around.

Pick a side. Communicate where you will be, and watch from the same side of the road. This will help runners see and find you.

Plan for traffic. Allow extra time to get from one viewing spot to another. Get there early and dont leave if you dont see someone right away. Your friend may be having a really good day or a tough one.

Cheer on other runners, too. It will mean a lot to them!

    Great Viewing Spots

Favorite CheersClap, shout, and show your support for participantsits always welcome. Save the Youre almost there! cheer until the very enda few miles is still a long way for someone who has been running for hours. Here are some favorites.

Spectators will naturally find places to watch the runners, but below are some suggested locations for the marathon and half marathon. Please refer to the course map for binocular icons showing the viewing spots.

In addition to shouting your support, bring along cowbells, tambourines, thunder sticks, or make a sign. Many cheering supplies are available from sponsors at the Expo. Please be respectful of private and public property, and dispose of your cheering materials appropriately.

Keep smiling! Youre looking awesome! Running smooth! You can do it! Way to wheel!, or run! One stride at a time! Way to focus! Stay relaxed!

Keep it up! Welcome to Mankato! (when appropriate) Way to go! You rock! Call out something unique about a runner (bib #, the color or a logo

  • Parking at Start Line

    Parking at Verizon Wireless Center

On the morning of the race, busses will start taking people from the Verizon Wireless Center to the start line at MSU, Mankato. The last bus will leave from the civic center at 7:20 am.

All runners are either required to take the bus from the US Bank parking lot next to the Verizon Wireless Center to the start line at the MSU lots or get a ride to the start. No busses will return you to the start after the race.

The START line for all races (Marathon, Half, Relay and 10K) is located in the parking lots of the MSU Mankato Campus. The parking lots are located on the southwest corner of Stadium Road and Monks Avenue. If you are dropping your runner off, please remember that you will be able to park in these lots onthe north half, but not on the south half. The actua START line is in the middle of these lots!

Please DO NOT park on Stadium Road from Monks Avenue to Warren Street or on Warren Street south of Stadium Road. If you are a runner, DO NOT come along and park. There WONT be busses at the finish to take you back to these parking lots. If you dont have a ride, please park in the ramps by the Verizon Wireless Center and take the busses to the START line.

There is plenty of parking in the City Center that is around and within walking distance of the Verizon Wireless Center and Pasta Feed restaurants including the parking ramps and on-street parking. Many businesses have generously made their parking lots available for event parking on either Friday after 6:00 pm or Saturday or both days of the event.

Unfortunately we were not able to finalize the map before production of this guide. Please find the map on the website www.mankatomarathon.com for a quick reference of parking lots available to you as a runner or spectator.

PhotographySport PiX, a division of Quality 1 Hr Foto, is Minnesotas premier event photographers, specializing in sports of all kinds. They have partnered with the Mankato Marathon to shooting photos of the inaugural event from land and air from start to finish. Look for their booth at the Post Race Area to get an official Mankato Marathon photo of you with a Mankato Marathon backdrop. They will be providing specialty products during and after the event online. You can find more information about them and where to order your photos at www.spxsports.com. There will also be a link to their site on the Mankato Marathon website at www.mankatomarathon.com.

Mankato Marathon PrintThe selection of the inaugural Mankato Marathon print was a competitive one with several entries. Barbara Bjellands print concept was ultimately chosen. Barbara is a local fine artist and graphic designer for print and web. Her fine artwork includes figurative work (people and animals), architectural paintings, landscapes, commissions and illustration. Her concept was chosen because of its reflection on both the significance of the event (Marathon) and the location (Mankato).

In Barbaras wordsThe two running figures represent the event. The Mankato Courthouse and clock tower represent the event as well as the location, since the concept of time is vital in a marathon. The clock tower displays a time of twenty-five minutes past ten, when the first marathoners are about to finish the race.

The concept also features the location. The Mankato landscape includes historic architecture, trees that boast the glowing colors of fall, and the businesses along Front Street where the race will end. The distant river and bluffs are a focal point below the FINISH line gantry at streets end. The birds in the upper right of the picture mirror the runners below, suggesting the feeling of freedom that many runners experience.

The print is for sale along with the Mankato Marathon merchandise. Winners of the races will each receive a complimentary print.

  • Race GoodiesEach finishing marathon participant will receive a high quality technical t-shirt. Shirts for the marathoners are special since they will have a special design with the words FINISHER on them. All marathoners must finish the event to get a shirt. Shirts will be given to marathoners at the end of the run. (Participants in the Half Marathon and 10K will also receive a t-shirt.)

Each marathon and half marathon participant will also receive a medal when they cross the finish line.

Participants in all events will receive a race goodie bag with valuable coupons and samples of great products. They and their families will be able to visit the Expo and see all the vendor booths and listen to the speakers at the event.

Post race will offer all participants a secure area after the event to relax, drink and fill your stomach on great post race food and drinks!!

Racing teaches us to challenge ourselves. It teaches us to push beyond where we thought we could go. It helps us to find out what we are made of. This is what we do. This is what its all about.
