Bruins & TrojansIt was Monday, August 15, 2016, and President Shannon Ryan was back from vacation to invite us to join the annual District Paul Har-ris Celebration on October 22 aboard the USS Iowa, after which she awarded Richard Montgomery his returnee blue badge….UCLA fanatic Ray Padilla told us that, as of the meeting date, the PAC 12 would rank behind only two countries in the Olympics medal count, and USC fanatic Wade Austin auctioned (for the club) his 50-yard-line Rams tickets for the upcoming exhibition game, sold to President Shannon for $200.

Water ReplenishmentLoli Ramezani introduced our first of two speakers, Jim Kennedy, candidate for the Water Replenishment Board and activist with the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters. Jim told us about projects to reclaim water, to enable us to use our plentiful groundwater and at the same time replenish it, with recycled water, imported water, and better water collection and storage. He also cautioned us that we will need more dams as we lose the storage provided by shrinking mountain snowpacks. It was a fitting talk to follow last week’s talk about desalination. Coach Don MorrowTim Hageman introduced our second speaker, Mira Costa 24-year football coach Don Morrow (he is also a popular chemistry teacher). He himself is a former Aviation High quarterback (who grew up hating Costa, of course), after attending La Marina and Begg Schools. His three sons played at Costa, and his alums include four pro players. He went on to play at El Camino and then finished school at Northridge. He was invited to be Costa’s quarterback coach, moved on to Redondo, became head coach at South, and has been with Costa since 1993. His model for his players is to be competitive on the field and in the class-room. Safety is his priority, bolstered by improved training methods and good equipment. He encourages his players to engage in multiple sports and does not rely on transfers.

Laughing YogaIt was Monday, August 8, 2016, and Acting President Ian Jackson stepped aside while Kathleen Terry told us to stop and smell the roses (or to just enjoy the sound of Tom Jeffry’s laughter) (Kathleen: “Be where you are”); while Dan Saks preached the virtues of laughing yoga; and while President Shannon Ryan greeted us from Yosemite Valley. Then Ian presided over the election by acclamation of Geoff Bremer to our Foundation Board. Susan Adams announced the renewal of Significant Others Night Out on September 14 from 6-8 pm at Lido. Mark Burton updated us on the Gelson’s permit application process—the application is complete, the public review period has begun, and the Planning Commission will hold a hearing soon. All this was accompa-nied by the formerly traditional Ian Jackson Sports Report. Farewell, Kathy McElroy VicarsOn the personal side, Acting President Ian announced that Kathy McElroy Vicars is moving to Utah, that Randy Meadors really has moved north to the Sacramento area, and that all three of our recently lost members—Kathy, Randy, and Kent Caldwell—promise to visit us often…..Deb Arnold has her third grandchild…..Nelson Gray’s son is engaged to be married in Orlando…..Wade Austin’s grandson was christened, with Wade’s son (the dad) singing a song he wrote….Mark Burton is getting drilled by Ray Padilla….John Hugunin reported that Wendell Harter has reached his 96th birthday.

Surfrider FoundationLes Silverman introduced one of our more compelling speakers, Craig Cadwallader of the Surfrider Foundation, who focused his talk on the proposed desalination plant in El Segundo on the Manhattan Beach border. Craig is a business consultant and developer who devotes 40-60 volunteer hours per week to environmental work. Surfrider proposes that the West Basin Water District Desalination Project be delayed until they first try expanding their water recycling program, which is more efficient, less expensive and consumes less energy. Direct Potable Use (DPU) of recycled water is pending legalization in California and is safe. By comparison, Israel now desalinates, but only after first trying every other option. Recycled water is preferable to dumping single use water in the Bay, which pollutes and wastes water. Desal plants also do local economic damage (making the beach area less desirable). Craig suspects that West Basin’s primary motive may be water independence, but Craig suggests there are other ways to accomplish that.

Desal or No Sale?Craig could not have been more respectful toward the West Ba-sin Water District, describing his positive personal relationships with Board members and acknowledging them for their ongoing funding of Surfrider Foundation projects. At the same time, Craig is so persuasive that his modest suggestion that West Basin at least study the recycling alternative seems to be a no-brainer. There must be another point of view, and Craig suggested that we attend upcoming public forums on this desal plant. Our Rotary Club has a long-standing policy of welcoming both sides of public policy issues, and I have no doubt we would welcome a contrasting point of view. But at least for now, it’s clear from the many questions voiced by club members during this meeting, that we, the people of Manhattan Beach, treasure our ocean like the irreplaceable wonder that it is, and that our first instinct will always be to protect this precious resource.

Yours in Rotary,Jim Hallett
