Weekly Maths Tasks Weekly English Tasks In maths this week, we will be continuing to learn about multiplication, an area we covered in school during Terms 3 and 4. Please read the ‘Teach time’ sheet with your child for each lesson and complete any activities together. There will then be a ‘Your Turn’ task, which your child should be able to have a go at completing independently. We have also included an optional challenge task for each day. Friday is a fluency lesson. We are currently carrying out some maths assessment in school and it would be brilliant to gather this information for children working from home as well. Please ask your child to complete the fluency questions independently and then send a photo of the completed sheet via ClassDojo. Many thanks. Monday This week we are going to be planning and writing our own version of The Snail and the Whale. At the beginning of the English Resource Pack, we have created some parent guidance to help you to support your child with planning and writing their own story. Main activity Today we are going to plan our new stories using another story map, which can be found in the distance learning pack. You will need to draw pictures in each box for the beginning, middle and ending of the story. Challenge: can you add some interesting adjectives to your plan? Focus on making sure letters like ‘b’ and ‘t’ are taller than others and ensuring all letters are joined. Even if your child’s writing is scruffier, joining is always better in the long run.

ThursdayToday we are going to write the middle section of our new story. Check your story map to remind yourself of the two places your character visits.

Main activityWrite the middle of your story, using adjectives to describe the places your character visits. Remember to use your Phase 5 sound mat to support you with spelling any tricky words. Afterwards, check through your work for capital letters and full stops.

Parent Guidance

We want to provide you with some reassurance and advice for this week’s English sequence which involves a longer writing opportunity. Here are some top tips from us:

This is an exciting opportunity for your child to write their own version of the story. Hopefully your child will have enjoyed their English lessons about The Snail and the Whale. Please help and encourage your child to feel excited about writing their own version of the story!

You can help your child to remember to include capital letters, full stops and adjectives in their writing. Please also encourage your child to use their Phase 5 sounds mat to support them when spelling unfamiliar words.

Writing should be a fun experience. Try to encourage your child to write a couple of sentences a day, even if this means having a break in between. However, if your child is finding this difficult, they could have a go at retelling their new story in a different way, for example; make a video, draw pictures or act out their new story. Feel free to be creative!

Planning

To help your child to plan their story on their story map, it can be useful to provide them with some ideas to choose from if they are finding it difficult to think of their own. Please find some ideas we have thought of below:

Animal ideas bank

Lobster Starfish Crab Jellyfish Octopus

Settings ideas bank

Lego land Ice planet Dinosaur island Jungle Desert

Problem and solutions ideas bank

Getting lost but then finding their way home Something attacks them but they manage to escape They fall out with each other but then become friends again They get trapped but they find a way out Someone gets injured and they find someone who can heal or help them

Story map

Here is an example of a story map which has been completed as a model by a teacher. This gives you an idea of the expectations you might have for your child’s story map. This can be completed on the computer or by hand using the template provided in the distance learning pack. Your child’s story map will act as a prompt to support their writing for each section of the story.

Writing models

Below is an example of a model text which includes a range of Year 1 skills. You may wish to read through this with your child before they begin writing to provide them with some ideas on how to structure each section of their new story. They could also read through and highlight any Year 1 skills they can spot e.g. adjectives, ‘and’ to join sentences, ‘because’ to extend sentences.

Beginning

This is the tale of a crab and a great big, grey-blue humpback whale. The red crab lived in a small cave under the sea with lots of other crabs. He was very bored because there was nothing to do. He decided to make a sign out of seaweed asking for a lift around the world.

Middle

One night a whale saw the message. Soon they started their journey. First they visited a tiny island. It had green palm trees with shiny treasure hanging from the branches. After that they visited Penguin Island and they saw thousands of fluffy penguins in the icy cold water.

Ending

Suddenly the crab fell off the tail of the whale! The whale could not find him and felt very worried. But the crab made another sign out of slimy seaweed and then the whale found him. Finally the crab and the whale went back to the small cave and told the other crabs all about their adventure.

Week 4 R.E.

Hi Year 1!This week we have another story which you can find in the Jewish Torah and the Christian Bible.

It is the story of Esther.Esther was a brave and beautiful lady!

Check with an adult and watch the clip telling Esther’s story or read the story on the next page.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IesvJS7_ZNo

The Story of Esther

There was once a king who ruled over a great kingdom. He lived in a splendid palace and had a beautiful wife called Esther. A man called Haman helped the king to rule the kingdom. Haman was always polite to the king but very rude to other people. Nobody liked him.

47

Page 48: Mangotsfield C of E Primary School€¦  · Web viewLook at the story map you created yesterday to remind yourself of your new character. Verbally describe your character to your

Learning Project – Term 6 Week 4– Year 1

Haman thought he was very important. He told everyone to bow when they met him. But a Jewish man called Mordecai would not bow. Haman was furious and decided to punish Mordecai and the other Jewish people. He ordered all the Jewish people in the kingdom to be killed and their things taken away.

The Jewish people were very frightened. Mordecai begged Queen Esther to help save them. The queen was Jewish, too, but the king did not know that. Queen Esther thought about what to do. She dressed up in her best robes and invited the king and Haman to a special feast.

At the feast, brave Queen Esther told the king about Haman’s wicked plan. She told the king that she was Jewish and asked him to spare her life and the lives of all the Jewish people. The king was very angry with Haman. He ordered wicked Haman to be taken away. Then he asked Mordecai to help him rule the kingdom instead.

Here is a picture of Esther and the King to colour in.
