The word manga was in common use after the
publication in the nineteenth century Hokusai’s Manga,
containing drawings from sketchbooks
sorted famous Ukiyo artist, Hokusai.
However, I jig (funny pictures) drawn in the
twelfth century by various artists, contain many manga-looking
elements such as emphasis on story and simple, artistic lines.
When Japan has opened for the
world in the mid-nineteenth
century (Meiji era), began to
bring Western artists to teach
their students the principles of
Japanese painting and creating
the image. In its current form,
manga start existing after World
War II.
In the twentieth century, the word manga began to relate mainly to the book, which in Japanese culture is treated differently than in the United States. Manga is the art
form and simultaneously the popular literature. Like its American counterpart, manga has been criticized as
contained violence and sexual themes, but there are no legal prohibitions that would try to limit what can be drawn in the manga, not counting the obscure laws
relating to all published materials, speakers, obscene works that generally should not be sold. This freedom has allowed artists to draw manga for every age group and for
each subject.

In Japan, manga is drawn, written
(vertical text) and printed from right to left. When the titles are translated into other languages ,
graphics and layout were reversed in a
process called ‘flopping’ so that books can be read from left to right. However, various
authors, such as Akira Toriyama, did not agree on a way to
modify their works, and wished to
maintain the foreign versions of the
original format from right to left.
Japanese manga has gained immense popularity and is being translated into many languages.
As a result of pressure fans and creators, more publishers began
offering size from right to left, and the format from left to right
disappeared, not counting exceptions.
