Halla Way_Work Properly

This column was created as part of practicing “Halla Way, Work Properly,” for global Mando people to share the seven major Work Smart tasks and practice cases.

The Open Communication improvement activities of MDK (Mando Korea), which are being implemented by 36 divisions, are being accelerated. After

the Open Committee workshop consisting of three sessions was held in Early March, each division established various improvement methods for

“Work Smart” with town hall meetings held by mid-April.

This year, discussion concentrated on “smart time management,” “smart meeting,” and “smart reporting” of the seven Work Smart tasks, and improvement ideas were deduced from the tasks. Open Communication that leaders and members conduct together! What improvement ideas have been suggested in each division? Let’s look at the ones that stand out.

The Start of Real Change is ‘Practice from Now on’MDK Establishes Improvement Methods with Town Hall Meetings by Division

Smart Time Management to Increase ProductivityFirst, the followings are Work Smart practice promises Mando employees have established with respect to time management. Time management aims to increase productivity during work hours by making the work direction clear in the morning and creating an environment for concentration. It seeks harmony of work and personal life by prohibiting unnecessary meetings after 5:00 pm. In the town hall meeting held under the supervision of division head, each division established

representative improvement methods as below.

⊙ Material Research Center : Operation of “Away Purpose Card”

⊙ Global Purchasing Center: Operation of work concentration time (10:00 am~12:00 am)

⊙ Global Strategy Center: Avoidance of work instructions and reports after 5:00 pm

⊙ Global HR Center: Clarification of work instructions and inducement of time management with work communication card

⊙ SSD Quality Management Center: Creation of “Incentive Work Room” and sharing its schedule with “Work Diary,”

which is an in-house system

Smart Reporting Focused on CoreSmart reporting aims to focus on key points by being faithful to contents while eschewing formal-ity. Its core contents are the “activation of online reports,” “reports with three pages or less,” and “avoidance of unnecessary decorations.” The practice promises that stand out regarding this are

as follows.

⊙ Reliability & Validation Test Center: Prohibition of PPT reports (active use of Excel/Word/e-mail for internal reporting)

⊙ Global Management Center: Putting [header] in the email subject lines (active use of e-mail for simple reports and email

from which receiver should easily glean key points)

Examples: [Decision Required], [Information Sharing], [Attending Meeting], [Review Required], etc.

Smart Meeting for Smooth CommunicationLastly, smart meetings aim to create a meeting culture where communication to solve problems is based on mutual respect, and its major contents are “less than 1 hour,” “purpose-driven,” and “take advantage of videoconferencing.” Regarding this, Mando employees have established prac-

tice promises for the first half of 2018 as follows.

⊙ Global Sales & Marketing: Use of CISCO video-conferencing

⊙ Corporate Labor Relations Center: 29/59 campaign (29 minutes for short meetings and 59 minutes for long meetings)

⊙ Marketing Center: When meeting is called for, the meeting purpose/participator/required time / decision-making items

should be indicated

⊙ Iron Casting Division: Reinvestigating meetings and meeting participants by division and removing duplicated or wasted

meeting

MDK continuously expands activities for the practice of seven Work Smart tasks to work properly. However, the activities of Open Communication, which is aimed at creating practical and positive changes, should be backed up by the leaders’ setting an example and active support and employ-ees’ positive mindset and efforts. The success or failure of the practice promises established in the 36 divisions depends on “practice from now on” by employees.

As cars, which were regarded as only a transportation means, move closer to people’s lives, they repeat smart evolution in tandem with

the life patterns of modern people. Vehicles are transformed into running smartphones for convenience and become safer. Not only that,

the concept of flying vehicles has become a reality.

In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) Makes Driving Pleasant In-vehicle Infotainment (IVI) is a collective term for infor-

mation and entertainment that can be enjoyed in vehicles.

IoT(Internet of Things) and AI(Artificial Intelligence) are not

the future technology any more, but the daily routine of to-

day. Now, anybody can have the service they desire any-

where at any time. The automotive industry, responsive to

changes in technology, is also quickly responding to the de-

mands of these consumers. Infotainment platforms, includ-

ing operating systems which configure and control the Info-

tainment system, and smartphone-related middlewares, are

drawing the notice of the world. Leading software companies

around the world are using this as a new growth engine for

infotainment platforms based on the technology accumulat-

ed through computers and smartphones.

Apple launched Carplay, which can provide navigation,

streaming, voice recognition services with its connection to

iOS at the Geneva Motor show in March 2014. In Google I/O, a

conference with developers, Google unveiled “Android Auto,”

an infotainment platform that can be linked to the Android OS.

In February, Daum Kakao announced that the server type

voice recognition it developed based on the voice engine of

“Kakao I,” an AI platform, will be applied to previously released

Hyundai Kia cars through software updates. This “Server type

voice recognition” provides useful information such as desti-

nation search, restaurants, tourist attractions, and repair shop

info with voice recognition using the “One Shot” method that

was simplified to one step when users press a button attached

to a handle. Although such technologies are limited to GPS

and smart services now, if they are combined with autono-

mous vehicle technologies, it is expected that starting an en-

gine, lowering windows, and deciding on a driving route can

also be controlled by voice recognition. The era of demanding

only performance and reliability from cars has already passed.

The evolution of infotainment systems is expected to continue

as new IT technologies are being actively incorporated.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a Reality? Flying Car! Mankind’s aspiration for flying cars can be seen in various

SF films. Henry Ford, who popularized automobiles, also

assumed that flying cars could be developed. In fact, he de-

veloped a one-man flying car called “Sky Flivver” in 1926,

but it failed.

There is no clear definition of the concept of a flying car. Var-

ious methods are mentioned such as a device that drives on

roads like other general vehicles, but can fly if needed, or a

machine that is specialized for flying, like a drone. Therefore,

many different companies are actively developing flying cars

with various features using their own methods. The company

that stands out in the flying car market is AeroMobil in Slovakia.

It aims to launch a flying car in 2020 that runs on the road like

other general vehicles but can spread its folded wings and fly

about 700 km at a speed of 200 km/h if needed.

The Chinese-owned, U.S.-based company Terrafugia suc-

ceeded in developing a double-seater flying car, Transition,

in 2009. It can fly about 600 km as well as drive on roads.

The company is now developing a four-seat flying car, the

TF-X, the next-generation model. In February 2018, a fly-

ing car made a successful test flight in Guangzhou with a

passenger onboard. This is Ehang 184, a single-passenger

drone developed by Ehang, a leading drone company in

Guangzhou, China.

Uber, the company that provides a vehicle sharing service,

presented a flying car project called “Elevate.” It plans to un-

veil a taxy capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) in

2020 and conduct test operation of taxis called by the user

when needed. Airline company Airbus also introduced a

small flying car, Pop.Up, which can unite and split in a modu-

lar way, in the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS), and

automaker Toyota is investing in a flying car project called

“Cartivator” that it will unveil around the opening of the 2020

Tokyo Olympics.

As flying car tests succeed one after another, moves for com-

mercialization are being made in earnest. Some important

challenges remain, including costs amounting to hundreds

of millions of dollars and whether passenger safety can be

guaranteed. However, it seems these can be solved along

with the technologies that rapidly evolve.

People Story

I joined Mando in October 2007 as if it was destined to be like that. I am

always grateful that I now have the job I like thanks to the selection at the

time. As I was in charge of purchasing in the electronic department of my

first workplace, I also took on purchasing work in Mando.

Manager Kook kyung-Pyo, who oversaw the department then, led me into

the vehicle field step by step and helped me become familiar with it by

taking me on tours of suppliers and teaching me about materials, the man-

ufacturing process, and cost analysis. Manager Kook is both my superior

and teacher. The purchase division was transferred from MRC to MBC and

the workplace also changed. Thanks to the recommendation of Manager

Kook, I could come to MBTC. Ten years have passed since then, and my

sales job has started.

Hello, I am Wang Hui, and I work for MBTC (Mando Beijing Trading).

I am responsible for OEM sales for the local division of

FAW and BAIC and North and South VW (JAC VW).

Hardship is Just a Foothold for the Way ForwardIf Manager Kook is the person who helped me enter the ve-

hicle field, Manager Wang Shuqiang led me into the sales

world. I think I was really lucky that I met such an experi-

enced and wise senior colleague as soon as I started sales

work. At the time, Manager Wang and I were charge of the

Northeast market, which had no profit at all. Manager Wang

had a lot of experience and personal connections and I had

courage and passion. We gradually opened the Northeast

market together. Although I had a lot of hardships and diffi-

culties in the process, I thought of the hardships as a foot-

hold in the way forward and developed myself.

After hard work for several years, OEM markets, such as

FAW Hongqi, FAW Car, Brilliance Auto, North and South

VW (JAC Volkswagen), and BAIC Motor were opened one

by one. One interesting thing is that a customer who did not

see me, even though I had been waiting for several hours, is

now my best friend. The Northeast market, which had noth-

ing, has grown to the North area market now. An office was

built in Shenyang and the number of employees increased

to eight on three teams. It is now the largest office of MBTC.

Unwavering Heroine in Sales DivisionWhen I look back on the past 10 years, what I remember

the most is the delight I felt when I won the order for the first

program. I helped drunken managers to go home safely and

drank with the remaining customers like a heroine in a con-

gratulatory reception with customers. And I remember anoth-

er thing. I worked hard for sales for two years and finally won

an order. But due to a problem with the bylaws of the custom-

er company, we failed to get the order on the day before the

end. I complained till the end and extracted an apology from

the customer. And so on… Such experiences and memories

seem to have made me the robust person I am today.

I would like to convey such experience to other team mem-

bers in order for them to avoid mistakes. Although there have

often been team member changes in the last few years, our

team atmosphere is always active and positive. We all con-

gratulate others’ success, overcome setbacks, help and en-

courage each other. In particular, Jenny in our team and I

have been like sisters. It was an atmosphere like a family

that helped me overcome many difficulties and become what

I am now.

I was fortunate enough to be able to win the GMA Award in

2017 because I won many orders. I was happy, but at the

same time, I felt the responsibility and trust of the company

heavily. The award was for the joint efforts of our team. I will

consider the responsibility and trust as a driving force and

keep working hard with enthusiasm.

I appreciate all the superiors who understood and helped me

and would like to say thanks to my colleagues who encour-

aged me and my family who understood and supported me.

Mother is Always StrongThere’s a saying, “Woman is weak, but mother is strong.” I

could understand this after I gave birth to my son in 2012.

Since I had a baby, I have become strong in everything such

as personality, relationships… Such a change also influ-

enced my work. When I work, I am more mature and smooth.

When my son was younger he cried whenever I went on a

business trip, but now he can say “bye mom” in a calm man-

ner. I am always sorry that I cannot be with him on week-

days, although I am with him for as much time as possible

on weekends. He’s now six years old, and he’s optimistic and

willingly helps others. All of this is the result of the full sup-

port of my husband and parents-in-law. My family is always a

reliable supporter and most comfortable harbor for me.

I want to share my happiness and luck with my superiors and

colleagues, who always help me. I believe all of us who live and

work hard will advance with Mando and achieve our dreams.

Culture Story

Festa Junina — the More Countrified, the MerrierBrazil is called a nation of passion because of its passionate festivals. There are a

variety of folk festivals in Brazil. Festa Junina, which means “festival of June” in Por-

tuguese, is a folk festival held across Brazil around St. John’s Day on June 24 every

year. June in Brazil is a time to prepare for winter after finishing the year’s harvest.

Therefore, Festa Junina has the meaning of thanksgiving. In the festival period, people

get dressed up with country costumes, known as caipiras. Women wear pigtails, rouge

their cheeks, and paint freckles on them. Men dress up as farmers with checkered

shirts and large straw hats, and wear fake beards. The quadrilha is a dance that can

be seen during this period. Women and men mingle and dance to Latin music. It was

originally a ballroom dance in the French court where four couples danced in pairs, but

changed to a free dance with no restrictions on the number of dancers.

The food cannot be missed. The end of June, when the festival is held, is the time after

the corn harvest. Therefore, people enjoy food with corn such as corn cakes, corn pud-

ding with coconut, and corn bread. A short play, “Wedding Ceremony of the Hillbilly”

is also a special performance shown only during this time. Although the festival is held

throughout Brazil, it is particularly splendid and grand in the northeast region of Brazil.

Diverse Cultures Bloom Spectacular Festivals Brazil’s Festa Junina and Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro

Brazil is a cultural gathering country where Western, Asian and African cultures meet and new cultural flowers bloom. With the African slaves

brought to Brazil, which has a long history of Portuguese colonial rule, a new color was added to Brazilian culture. Also, Asian culture was

mixed in due to Japan’s immigration policy after the First World War. The diversity of culture is the pride and power of Brazil. Take a look at

Brazil’s festival scene with its colorful culture.

Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro, the Greatest Festival EverEvery year when the carnival is held in Rio de Janeiro, about 250,000 people from all over

the world visit this beautiful beach city. The carnival, first held in 1723, boasts a tradition

of more than 300 years. Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro is held before Lent from the end of

February through early March.

Along with the Lent festival held by Portuguese people who emigrated to Brazil in the

16th century, the dance and music culture of African slaves was added, thereby forming

the current carnival. Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro is also known as Samba Carnival. As the

dance of black Americans emigrated to Brazil spread rapidly, Brazilian Samba was born.

During the carnival, the greatest party on earth takes place. Sensual dancing girls who

attract attention with colorful costumes and Brazil’s signature rhythms lead the party and

parade, and there is no lack of food, alcohol and other beverages. The carnival goes from

5:00 pm to the early morning of the following day to avoid the hot daytime.

Jully de Oliveira : MCB, Human Resources Department

Come to Brazil to enjoy the best everGreetings to the Mando Family! I would like to invite you to come to Rio de Janeiro, where you will be able to enjoy the best carnival of your life. The city stops to celebrate this event and the streets are full of dancing and excitement. Samba school parades, trucks decorated with lightbulbs, traditional costumes, as well as street bands present an unforgettable experience. We also have the traditional Festa Junina when we dress in special costumes, play traditional music and eat a variety of fantastic food in June. MCB also has a June party for the employee’s family and they get to know the factory and have so much fun together. You probably do not want to miss this great opportunity. Come to Brazil!

The 30th Anniversary of Winter Test

30th Anniversary of the Swedish Winter Test

In Asian culture, the age 30 is called “irip” (standing firm) because people at the age usually build a foun-

dation for their family and society. Thirty years ago, Mando decided to make a bold investment, seeing

the future even though Korea’s automotive parts market was very small. The first winter test for a Korean

company started in Arjeplog, Sweden. It is no exaggeration to say that the place has made Mando what

it is now. And so there was an event in Arjeplog to resolve that in the next 30 years Mando will develop

more robust technologies than the technologies built in the past 30 years.

Writing the History of the Korean Automotive IndustryArjeplog, where one of Mando’s Winter Test Sites is located, is about 500 km north

from Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. Although it has an extremely cold climate

where temperatures can reach -40 °C, it is an optimal place to test automotive per-

formance on snowy and icy roads.

Winter test refers to testing whether automotive parts work in harsh environmental

conditions and getting approval from customers. Mando’s winter test, which started

first among Korean automotive parts companies, has significance in the history of

the domestic vehicle industry.

Starting with minimum vehicles and employees in 1989, Mando’s Winter Test Site

has grown and now has 100 vehicles and 120 research personnel. In 1989, Mando

decided on a bold investment of approx. USD 60 million and started winter tests of

its anti-lock brake system (ABS). The independent development of ABS started in

such way finally succeeded in 1994, and its price dropped significantly. This served

as a momentum to open the Korean automotive electrical/electronic components

industry in earnest.

A Record of Challenges and Passion in ArjeplogOn March 7, a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Swedish winter

test was held with 80 people in attendance including Chairman Chung

Mong-won, Sture Lestander, chairman of Colmis, Britta Flinkfeldt, the

mayor of Arjeplog, and Hwang In-yong, president of Halla Holdings.

After a ceremony to unveil a commemorative table the participants

watched a video on Mando’s footsteps over the last 30 years and its

promise for the next 30 years. Also, an appreciation plaque was given

to the researchers who endeavored in the winter tests with enthusiasm

for a long time.

In his commemorative speech, Chairman Chung Mong-won said “The

winter tests over the last 30 years have an important meaning in the 56-

year history of Mando. It is the essence of Mando technology develop-

ment to secure the highest safety for drivers. We will gear up our R&D

to surpass competitors in the rapidly changing automotive market with

this 30th anniversary as momentum.” He also asked Mando employees

to “conduct research with pride and thus achieve the advancement of

the domestic automotive parts industry.”

With the anniversary of the Swedish winter test as an impetus, Man-

do will strive for technology development by enhancing new technolo-

gy research such as its Integrated Dynamic Brake (IDB) and achieve

advanced verification. Also, Mando will make efforts for the advance-

ment of the electrical/electronic components industry, which is a fu-

ture growth engine, by intensively testing the performance and safety

of state-of-the-art electric/electronic components such as IDB, Elec-

tronic Stability Control (ESC), and Advanced Driver Assistance System

(ADAS) for autonomous driving.
