• Founded by King Mindon in 1857; moved the capital city from Amarapura

• Name of the city came from the Mandaley Hill, which is considered a holy site. The classical name of the city is Ratanapunja

• King Thibew was the last king (1878-1885). His chief wife’s name if Supayalat
