    Yes, my friends, we are building! Deo Gratias et Mariae!Te new Immaculate Heart o Mary Chapel, where only the traditional rites

    o the Church will be oered, will mirror the Immaculate hersel. It will be lovelywithin and without. But the real beauty will grace its interior, where God dwells.Te ancient chants o the Church will echo Marys song. Incense at High Mass

    and Benediction will ascend like the sweet odor o the Virgins holiness. Silence,reverence, order, and delity will reign, as they did in the mind, body, and aec-tions o the Immaculate. And many prayers will be oered or the conversion oAmerica our little part o Marys Empire!

    n 1683, the orces o the HolyLeague, under Polands King

    Jan Sobieski, roundly deeat-ed the Mohammedan invadersat the Battle o Vienna. Here isa brie telling o that triumphantoccasion by Gary Potter, in hisarticle Saint Mary o Victory Te Historical Role o Our Lady

    in the Armed Deense o the Faith (From the Housetops, No. 57,Spring 2003):

    Fortuitously, the pope o the day, Innocent XI, had just bro-kered an alliance between the Holy Roman Empire and the King-dom o Poland, which was also menaced by the Mohammedans.

    When it became known that no ewer than 300,000 urks wereadvancing on the imperial capital, Pope Innocent ordered thatrosaries be recited in the religious houses and churches o Rome.Te same prayers o supplication were oered throughout theEmpire. Still, the situation was so dangerous that the imperialcourt let Vienna or Passau and took reuge there. Meantime,there were special devotions at the Capuchin Church in Viennato Our Lady Help o Christians, whose amous picture hangsthere. It would become the symbol o the victory over the urks

Tis is when theViennese, Europes most a-mous coee-drinkers, discov-ered the stu. Te urks letquantities o it in their storeswhen they ran.) More to the

    point, in thanksgiving or the help given by the Mother o Godor the victory at Vienna, which was won on her east day, thethirtieth day ater the Assumption, Pope Innocent extendedthe east in honor o the Holy Name o Mary to the UniversalChurch.

    What isnt mentioned here is that Sobieski began the orcedmarches to Vienna rom the shrine o Our Lady o Czestochowa,

    where he mounted his charger on the Feast o the AssumptionAugust 15, 1683, to arrive in Vienna almost a month later.

    Tere were three occasions in the deense o Christendomagainst Islam in which Europe was saved by a John: John Hu-nyadi, the Hungarian king, and hero o the Battle o BelgradeDon Juan o Austria, who led the Christian navies at the Battle o Lepanto; and Jan Sobieski, King o Poland. On each othese instances, the Christian people sang with gratitude, Terewas a man sent rom God whose name was John, applying tothe hero the description o the Baptist rom the prologue oSaint Johns Gospel.

    Ater the battle, Sobieski paraphrased Julius Caesars a-mous quote by saying veni, vidi, Deus vincit I came, I sawGod conquered.

    Sobieskis heavy artillery in this battle was, as the articlesaid, the winged Polish lancer hussars. Tese elite troops werePolish-Lithuanian heavy lancers developed rom an earlier Hungarian prototype. Tey were winged because they wore eagleeathers, a detail variously explained in dierent histories. (Onetheory explains it as a orm o psych warare, since the eathersmade a strange noise when the hussars were in ull gallop.)

    When the husaria (as they are known in Polish) went intobattle, they customarily sang a Polish hymn, reckoned the mostancient national anthem in the world, the Bogurodzica (Motheo God). Oddly enough, the words o this chant do not mentionthe nation o Poland. It is a hymn to Our Lady and invokes alsothe intercession o Saint John the Baptist.

    is a pity because the prayer o the Rosary, or ve decades o it,ater the Sacred Liturgy o the Eucharist, is what most unites uswith God by the richness o the prayers that compose it.

    All o them came rom Heaven, dictated by the Father, bythe Son and by the Holy Spirit.

    Te Glory Bethat we pray between decades was dictated bythe Father to the angels when He sent them to sing it nearto His Word, the newborn Child. It is also a hymn tothe Blessed rinity.

    Te Our Fatherwas dictated by the Son, and it is a prayerdirected to the Father.

    Te Hail Maryis completely impregnated both with a rin

    itarian and a Eucharistic sense.     Te ollowing beautiul letter is Sister Lucy o Fatimas expo-sition o the liturgical nature o the Rosary. At the end, she ex-claims rom her heart (surely inspired by Our Ladys ImmaculateHeart) that, I have great hopes that, in the not too ar distantuture, the prayer o the Holy Rosary will be proclaimed a litur-gical prayer.     Moved by the Holy Spirit, St. Elizabeth said: Blessed artthou among women, and Blessed is the Fruit o thywomb (Jesus).

    Te Church, also moved by the Holy Spirit, added, Holy

    Mary, Mother o God, pray or us sinners, now and at the houro our death. Tis prayer is directed to God through the me-diation o Mary: (Te Church is saying) because you are theMother o God, pray or us.

    Te Hail Mary is a rinitarian prayer because Mary was therst living temple o the most Holy rinity evident rom thewords o the Angel: Te Holy Spirit shall come upon theeand the power o the Most High shall overshadow thee,and thereore the Holy One to be born shall be called theSon o God.

    It is also Eucharistic. Mary is the rst living abernaclewherein the Father enclosed His Son, the Word made esh. HerImmaculate Heart is the rst Monstrance to hold Him. Herbreast and her arms were the rst Altar on which the Fatherexposed His Son or adoration. Tere the Angels, the Shepherds,and the Magi adored Him.

    Mary is the rst . . . who held in her pure and immaculatehands the Son o God. It was she who took Him to the em-ple to oer Him to the Father as a victim or the salvationo the world.

    I we give to the Hail Maryits ull signicance all thebeauty o these pious considerations we see that it is indeed arinitarian and a Eucharistic prayer, even more than a Marianone. I do not know i we can nd prayers more sublime or moreappropriate to recite beore the Blessed Sacrament.

    Moreover, ater the Sacred Liturgy o the Eucharist, theprayer o the Rosary is what best osters within our spirit thegrowth o the mysteries o Faith, Hope and Charity. It is thespiritual bread o souls. Te one who does not pray weakens anddies. It is in prayer that we meet with God, and, in this encoun-ter, He imparts to us Faith, Hope, and Charity. Without thesevirtues we cannot be saved.

    Unortunately, we cannot hopeully expect a great numbero souls to assist at daily Mass, but we can hope to bring a greaternumber o them to recite the daily Rosary. Tis practice willpreserve and increase their aith, due to the prayer lie it ostersand to the mysteries o our Redemption which are remembered

    in each decade.Te Rosary is the prayer o the poor and the rich, o the

    wise and the ignorant. o uproot this devotion rom souls is todeprive them o their daily spiritual bread. Te Rosary helpsto preserve that ickering ame o aith that has not yet beencompletely extinguished rom many consciences. Even or thosesouls who pray without meditating, the simple act o taking thebeads in hand to pray is already a remembrance o God othe supernatural. And just the simple recollection o the myster-ies beore each decade is still another ray o light sustaining theicker o light in their souls.

    Tat is why the devil has mounted against it such a greatattack. And the worst o it is that he has deluded and deceivedsouls who bear a great responsibility because o their ofce. Teyare the blind leading the blind. Tey seek in Vatican Council II

    support or their positions, not realizing that the holy counciordered them to preserve all the practices that in the course othe years had been ostered in honor o the Immaculate VirginMother o God; that the prayer o the Rosary is one o the mostimportant o these, and that, thereore, according to the decreeso the holy council and the recommendations o the Holy Father(it) is one we must maintain.

    I have great hopes that, in the not too-ar-distant uture, theprayer o the Holy Rosary will be proclaimed a liturgical prayerbecause all o its parts share in the Sacred Liturgy o the Eucha-rist.

    Let us pray, work, sacrice, and trust that Finally my Im-maculate Heart will triumph.

    No one who reads the Bible,Gods book, can ail to seethat the whole purpose o creationby God was the divinization o

    those whom He had created. Ourtime is to be eternity. Our lie isto be everlasting. Our happinessis to be that which God has in be-ing God. In all the prayers o theCatholic Church, one o the mostconstant utterances is per omnia

    saecula saeculorum, which means orever and ever.A saint is a created being who has corresponded completely

    with Gods intention o divinizing him and making him holy.Te word saint comes rom the word sanctus in Latin, whichmeans holy. Te term sanctiying grace means the divine avorby which God elevates a created being to His own state o holi-ness, and shares with him the everlasting glory o being Godsown by adoption.

    Te Communion o Saints is the greatest brotherhood or sis-terhood that there ever could be in creation. It is the union o allthose who have been sanctied by God. Te word saint, used inits highest sense, means someone already in the Beatic Visionwhose heroism and holiness, achieved on this earth, have beenacknowledged and approved by the Roman Catholic Church.But in a simple and initial sense, anyone can be called a saintwho is in the state o sanctiying grace. Saint Paul in his epist lesreers to all early Christians living on earth as the saints. Hedoes this over thirty times.

    Our Lords beautiul way o letting everyone know that theearly Christians were truly saints was when He said to Saint Paul,who was then called Saul, not Saul, Saul, why persecutest thouMy ollowers? but Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?

    Te greatest o all expressions o Christian belie is the Apos-tles Creed. In the Apostles Creed there are twelve articles, eachone o which was written by one o the welve Apostles. Teninth article o the Apostles Creed is the expression o beliethat those who are in the state o sanctiying grace are saints,the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion o Saints. Tosewho die in the state o sanctiying grace, even when they go toPurgatory, are saints. Tose who have been purged in Purgatory

    o all their oenses, and have gone to Heaven, are saints orever.Tose who have been outstandingly holy in achieving this goalwhile on earth are saints in the highest sense.

    Tere are, thereore, three states o sanctity applied to thesaints by the Catholic Church. Tey are: the Church Militant(those who are or can be put in the state o sanctiying graceand are ghting to keep it as living members o the one, trueChurch); the Church Suering (those who have died in the stateo sanctiying grace and are being purged o their deects in Pur-gatory); and the Church riumphant (those who have gone or-ever to see God and know God as God knows Himsel, and are

    united to God in His eternity, in His innity, in His glory, andin His happiness, orever and ever.)

    Te word Communion when used in the term Holy Com-munion means that in our esh and blood we are made partici-

    pators o the Body and Blood o Jesus. So intense is this unity inwhat is called Holy Communion that, ater having received itany Catholic is entitled to say along with Saint Paul, And I livenow not I; but Christ liveth in me (Gal. 2:20).

    God wanted rom all eternity to make us one with HimselTat is why He created us. He wanted to be not merely ourCreator, but our Father. He wanted to give us the title and righto say with the Second Person o the Blessed rinity, God theSon, when we speak to God the Father, Our Father, who are inHeaven. God the Creator becomes God our Father.

    Every little Christian child who has been baptized and whohas died beore reaching the age o reason beore the agewhere he can commit any willul mortal sin, or ail to conessthe one, true Faith to which by Baptism he belongs goes im-mediately to the Beatic Vision. He, or she, is a little saint bysheer grace. Tere are millions o such baptized inants in Heav-en, and they can be prayed to, and they pray or us.

    Anyone who wants to be a saint can become one. Our Lordchallenge in this invitation is most beautiul and clear and de-nite. Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall ndknock, and it shall be opened to you (Matt. 7:7).

    Tose who are meek, who are mourning or holiness, whoare hungry and thirsty or what God wants to give them, whoare admittedly poor in spirit shall possess the land, and shalbe comorted, and shall have their ll, and theirs shall be thekingdom o Heaven. Tose who want to be saints shall receiveGods mercy. Tey shall see God, shall be called the childreno God, and shall possess the kingdom o Heaven, i their ownsanctication is their rst goal and i they want to be saintsTey are the salt o the earth. Tey are the light o the world.

    Everyone in the world is called to be a saint. Tose who arenot Catholics are called to become Catholics. Go ye into thewhole world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He thabelieveth and is baptized, shall be saved: but he that believethnot shall be condemned (Mark 16:15, 16). Everyone who is inthe Catholic Church is called to be a good Catholic, or to comeback to the state o sanctiying grace through the Sacrament o

    Penance i he has lost it by sin. Every Catholic in the state osanctiying grace is called to be holier and holier, so holy that theChurch can declare him, or her, a saint.

    Anyone who wants to be a saint can become one. Our Lordchallenge in this invitation is most beautiul and clear and de-nite. Ours shall be the kingdom o Heaven. We shall possess theland. We shall be comorted. We shall have our ll. All we needto be is meek, and longing with tears or what is to come, andhungry and thirsty or what God has to give us. We are called tobe the salt o the earth. God wants us, and will make us the ligho the world. Tat is, i our aim is to be a saint.

    October, the month othe Guardian Angels,is past, but devotion

    to the Guardian Angels ought

    to be an everyday habit all theyear round. Te ollowing vequestions were sent to me by asecondary school student whoseamily are riends o mine. Itold him I could only provideshort answers and so, as you

    can see below, that is what I did.Does every human being have a guardian angel?Yes, every human being, whoever was, is, or will be, has a

    guardian angel. Te existence o angels is a dogma o aith,and the existence o guardian angels is clear rom holy scrip-

    ture and tradition; but whether or not every human being isgiven a guardian angel is a question that lies in the realm oopinion. Almost all the saints and doctors afrmed it, but aew o the early athers believed that only the baptized aregiven a guardian angel. Saint Tomas afrmed that everyman receives a guardian angel in his Summa Teologica (FirstPart, Question 113) and he provides irreutable argumentswhy this must be so. It was thecommon teaching in his time andno doctor ever questioned it sincethe thirteenth century. Tereore,i we look to the ordinary teaching

    o the Church, it would be rash andcertainly oensive to pious ears todeny it.

    Why is every man given a guard-ian angel?

    Because God wills the salvationo all men. And all men need andreceive sufcient grace to be saved.Te guardian angel cannot orce histrust to cooperate with grace, oth-erwise the will would not be ree,but he acts as a channel o actualgrace, working with Gods provi-dential designs, to bring the per-son he is guarding in contact withoutside occasions o grace: goodCatholics, religious and lay, goodbooks, a good teacher, good wordsand examples. Te more a man co-operates with grace the more graceshe will receive.

    Guardian angels also have the

    power to help our imagination in meditation. Since theimagination is one o our inner senses, the angel can actu-ally place holy images in themind, especially i we ask

    their assistance. I demons canplace impure images in some-ones imagination, in their at-tempts to lure one into willulconsent, then good angels canplace holy images in the mindto move one to acts o love andvirtue. Likewise, good angelscan prevent demons rom as-saulting our imagination byguarding our minds. Everthis night (and day) be at my

    side to light and guard, to ruleand guide.

    Te conversion o a sinnergives great joy to his guardianangel, indeed to all the angels.Remember Our Lords parableabout the woman who lost one o her ten coins, and how she

    swept her house in order to nd itWhen she ound it, how great was herjoy! Our Lord then gave the mean-ing o the parable, equating the lostcoin to a sinner, whose nding is a

    conversion, and the joy o the wom-an is that o the angels: Tere shalbe more joy beore the angels o Godupon one sinner doing penance(Luke 15:10).

    What does the guardian angel doafter his charge has died?

    Ater death the guardian angelswork o guarding is over. However, they do still have intercessorywork to do i their charge is inpurgatory. Tey carry the prayerso the suering souls to heavenand continue to act as an advocateTey give comort and solace to thesouls in purgatory. Remember, toothat their work as advocate is mostintense at the hour o death. Teguardian angels o those who diein grace work to procure a peace-ul death and ward o the demonsrom any nal assault.     remendous respect, reverence, devotion, and condence

    are due to our guardian angels. Tey have never sinnedmoreover, although they are so noble, they are happy to imi-tate the Son o God and descend to be our ministers; and theynever cease to praise God ace to ace or they are always inthe beatic vision. Tis respect, urthermore, should reectupon all men, even great sinners, i not or any other rea-son than or the sake o their angels. Many saints made it apractice to salute the guardian angels o all those with whomthey daily came in contact, whether in the conessional orin the marketplace, addressing congregations or studentsIt was a common practice o all missionaries to salute theguardian angels o the cities, towns, and nations into which

    they entered, asking or their help at all times.Te benets to be derived rom a serious devotion to the

    guardian angels are tremendous, but three stand out aboveall. First, by walking with angels, we will learn to walk bet-ter with God; second, we will acquire a more humble spirito obedience by ollowing their example, or the lower choirsrespond instantly to any commands they receive rom thehigher; last, and most important o all, by praying to the an-gels, we shall more easily conquer the beast in us, and developthat virtue, called by theologians angelic holy purity.

    permits a nal temptation to increase the merit o the just, theguardian angels assist in the battle. O those who ace the lasthour in sin, the guardian angels work by inusing holy imagesor providing a last occasion o grace by the exhortations o a

    good riend or relative, nurse, or chaplain. It is only ater thesoul that was entrusted to them is in eternal beatitude that thework o the angel guardian is over. Ater this, the guardianangel rests or all eternity in the joy o the Lord. And the an-gels also have a special accidental joy i the soul they guardedis in heaven with them. I we are saved, our guardian angelswill always thank God or our salvation.

    Te guardian angels never lose the beatic vision o Godeven while on their earthly assignment. Tey are always inheaven as ar as the state o eternal bliss, even when they arenot in the place o heaven. Dont orget that heaven is alsoa place, the physical beauty o which is beyond our imagina-

    tion.What about the guardian angels of the damned?Tese angels do not lose any o the joy they have in beati-

    tude. oo, remember that they are spirits, and they have nosense emotion. Even i their trust is lost they rejoice in the jus-tice o God. Tey eel no sorrow and certainly no shame or thenal all o their charge. No guardian angel ails; they all do agood job.

    Can a guardian angel be assigned to be anotherhumans guardian?

    Tey could be; but they are not. Your guardian angel isyours alone. Tere are plenty

    o guardian angels or theemploy o each and everyman. Some saints held thatevery angel o this lowest othe nine choirs will receivea trust to guard. Tereore,when the last guardian angelis sent by God, that will be toprotect the last man createdby God.

    A few more thoughts:At the nal hour o com-

    bat, our guardian angelsare especially solicitous ortheir clients. Here, at thismost solemn moment, theywork with tremendous vigorto prepare those who arein grace or the encoun-ter to come and to inspirecontrition into the heartso sinners. Tose death- Another angel trying to stump the panel of judges.

And because building prices have plummeted, a respected NewEngland contractor has given us a price tag o only $750,000 or this gem. Tat pricetag is very reasonable, given the nature o the project, a beautiul house o worship.

    Te religious will memorialize our major git donors with a large plaque at the entrance o IHM

    Chapel. Utilizing one o Saint Benedict Centers cherished memory items, we will arrange your

    names according to the order o the heavenly hierarchy:

    arly on the morning othe Feast o the Assump-

    tion o Our Blessed Ladyinto Heaven, August 15, 2011, Isuered the rst o two heart at-tacks. From the moment I head-ed to the rst hospital, I knewthat I had much to suer, but itwas also a great grace God hadsent me. I saw His punishment

    or the reprobate, but also the opportunity or evangelization.I had been reading Saint Alphonsus Liguoris Uniformity withthe Will of God. I knew I had to accept what He sent as His holywill. Tere was little time, but I had my wie grab some greenscapulars.

    Many o the lessons I learned at Saint Benedict Center cameto me as i they were weapons to be used in the ght. ertiaries oour order wear the brown scapular, the Miraculous Medal, andcarry their rosary with them at all times. So, when I underwentmedical procedures, doctors and nurses saw these things, in ad-dition to my two cords: one or Saint Philomena and one orSaint Joseph. What is this? asked a nurse. I explained to herwhat the cords were. It seemed as i each medical person was at-tentive to these little opportunities or learning. o some, I gavea green scapular with a typed explanation. Tey always seemedgrateul.

    On the rst day, it was determined that I should be trans-ported to a regional hospital. In the back o the ambulance, I sat

    with an EM/Paramedic. I asked him i he was a Catholic. Hewas, but he was not practicing.He said that he had some issueswith the Church. I inquiredo them, but it did not seem evenan hour-and-teen-minute tripmight resolve them. I am surethat it was only through theinspiration o the Holy Ghostand Our Lady that I came upwith a question that seemed toopen his eyes. I asked i he wassaying the Rosary. He put hishead down and answered qui-etly, No. I asked him wouldhe say it i I sent a rosary to him.He answered, Yes. Ater hewheeled me into the ER, I askedhim one more thing: Will yousay one Hail Mary or me? Heagain answered Yes. Te next

    day, the same man returned to the second hospital and came tosee me. I asked i he had given me that Hail Mary. He said hedid. I have sent him not only a Rosary, but also our little tract,

    second heart attack. I had al-ready gone to Conession witha hospital chaplain, received theLast Rites and Communion. Iwas ready to go, i God want-ed me. Te pain o the secondheart attack was such that I waspraying aloud one o my avor-ite prayers, taught by Our Ladyo Fatima to the three shepherd

    children. It is called the Sac-rice Prayer, to be said whenoering up an action or somesuering in a spirit o sacrice:O my Jesus, it is or the love o Tee, the conversion o sinnersand in reparation or the sins committed against the ImmaculateHeart o Mary. I wanted to oer the pain as an act o reparationto Our Lady. Te man in the bed next to me heard me, as wellas my nurse who happened to be the seventh child o a Catholicdeacon. I think that even such a small vocal act was a grace orthem. I let green scapulars as they wheeled me away.

    I met many doctors and nurses in my twelve-day stay. Mysurgeon seemed especially touched when I told him God would

    be using his hands in the operation and that I put all my trustin God.

    I ound something else o an especial help throughout theordeal: humor. I kidded the nurses and the doctors knowing ulwell they oten saw pain and suering as well as death and how that can aect one. Te most difcult part or me waslaughing. It hurt to laugh, sneeze, or cough. But I ound the littlethirty-page book, Uniformity with the Will of God, to be especially helpul to those in the medical proession. It was as i it wereintended or them.

    O the many doctors, one non-Catholic twice asked meabout my brown scapular. He asked i it was a charm. I told himno, it was the cloth o Our Lady that carried her promise orsalvation. He was interested and agreed to accept one i I sent itto him.

    Te surgeon, who seemed to be the chie, was a CatholicOur meeting was short, but memorable. My wie and I had beenpraying the Rosary when he came to examine me. He looked atthe Rosary and said, What mystery are you on? I said, TeVisitation. I then asked him i he was wearing his brown scapu-lar. He sheepishly hung his head down and said, no, and thathe had broken it when he was a teenager playing baseball andnever replaced it. I oered to send him one i he would wear itHe agreed.

    One o my nurses, a devout Catholic, prayed or all her pa-tients daily. She was happy to get a copy o Saint Alphonsus little

    book, as well as other items. I invited her, and all the others, tovisit us at Saint Benedict Center.During the days in the hospital, my amily came to visit me.

    O several I asked or at least one Rosary. Later, I learned one othem said a Rosary or the rst time in thirteen years.

    I you are ever hospitalized, or have to go in or tests, beaware that the olks in the X-ray and MRI departments will askto remove your scapulars, medals, or cords. I suggest the ollow-ing. Te material o scapulars has no eect on X-rays or MRIsand the like, so it should not be removed. Secondly, with X-rays,MRIs, and operations, I told the medical personnel to tape themedal to my ear or my neck, out o the way. Finally, I stronglysuggest having your nurse or doctor mark your medical chart:

    DO NO REMOVE SCAPULAR OR MEDALS FOR ANYREASON.

    Any patient can tell you the most popular question medicalpersonnel will ask: on a scale o one to ten, what is your pain

    level? During this daily question (posed multiple times) I askedi they ever thought what Christs pain level was on Calvary. I

    pointed out that modern man does not know how to suer, thawe should oer our suerings up to Our Lord to be joined withHis great suering and death on the Cross. Sometimes thesgood nurses would apologize or giving me some small pain withpin pricks or the taking o blood. I would ask them why theywere apologizing. Tey were doing their job and it gave me tiny opportunity to suer or Jesus who gave up His very lieor us.

    As Catholics we do some little things that mark us as Catholics. I suggest you keep Miraculous Medals with you to hand outo the clerk in the store, to the waitress who serves you, to theteller at the bank. God placed you in ront o that person at thatime. He put you there, no one else. Dont worry about what to

    say. Te Holy Ghost will take care o that. God put me in thahospital at that time. empus fugit, memento mori!ime iesremember death.

    From their rise at the begin-ning o the seventh cen-tury, the Mohammedans

    sought to spread their alse reli-

    gion by means o the sword. TeScourge o God, as they werecalled, poured out o the ArabianPeninsula and within a matter oyears subjugated the Holy Land,Persia, Iraq, North Arica, andthe Maghreb all o the lands

    o the Middle East that were Christian, or nearly so. From A-rica, they conquered Iberia. Spain would not nally rid herselo this alien occupation until 1492. Unortunately, great as wasthat triumph in the West, the Mohammedans had won theirmost momentous victory in the East thirty-nine years beore.

    Tat was when the capital o the once-mighty Byzantine Em-pire, Constantinople, ell to the orces o Sultan Mohammed IIin 1453. With its all, Europe was open to attack rom the East.

    Europe was vulnerable. Te rise o nationalism and internalstrie, especially ater the Protestant Revolt at the begin-ning o the 1500s, made her so. It was ar rom being a mereempty boast when the Sultan declared that he would topSaint Peters in Rome with the Crescent and wrap the popeshead in a turban.

    Saint Pius V, who became pope in 1566, sought to rally Eu-ropes rulers to the deense o the Continent. Most were eitherinvolved in military ventures o their own or simply uninterested

    in helping the pope, ignoring that they were as much threat-ened as the rest o Christendom by the Mohammedan menace.Finally, the pope was able to gather a navy o ships rom Ven-ice, Spain, Genoa, and smaller Italian states, theKnights o Malta, and his own Holy See. Don Juano Austria, a natural son o the Emperor Charles V,was named commander-in-chie o the orce, whichthe pope placed under the protection o Our Lady,Queen o the Most Holy Rosary. (In 1569, SaintPius, who spent the greater part o his ponticatecombating Protestantism, had declared in his BullConsueveruntthat the Rosary was the most eectivemeans o ghting heresy.)

    Rosaries were recited daily on the ships o theassembled Christian eet; blasphemy, swearing, andgambling were orbidden; and all the sailors and sol-diers perormed their religious duties. TroughoutEurope the Catholic aithul joined in begging theassistance o her who is terrible as an army set inbattle array (Canticle o Canticles 6:3).

    Te enemies met o o Lepanto in the Gul oCorinth at dawn on October 7, 1571. Te urkssounded as i they were straight rom hell with theirshrieks and wild yells. Te Christians maintained

    a general, dignied silence that mirrored their determinationWhen the battle ended at about ve oclock in the aternoon, nomore than orty-ve urkish ships were let aoat or uncapturedout o a eet o 274. Te Christians, who had a smaller eet to

    begin with, lost twelve galleys.In comparison to the thirtythousand urks killed or dis-abled and eight thousand takenprisoner, 7,500 Christians werekilled or wounded. In addition,thousands o Christian galleyslaves were reed rom urk-ish captivity. It would be daysbeore news o the battles out-come reached Rome by ordi-nary means, but rom a windowin the Vatican, Saint Pius V wasgiven to see this victory when it occurred over a supposedly un-deeatable oe.

    From the beginning, Don Juan declared that the true victorat Lepanto was Our Lady. Te Venetian Senate memorial-ized that It was not generals nor battalions nor arms thabrought us victory; but it was Our Lady o the Rosary(Te Rosary Crusade, by a Dominican Father). In thanks-giving, Saint Pius V made October 7 the Feast o OurLady o Victories.

    (In 1573 Pope Gregory XIII moved this east to the rst Sun-day in October, changing the name to the Feast o the MosHoly Rosary or all the churches with an altar dedicated to OurLady o the Rosary.)

    Europe had been saved, and the urks were nished oreveras a sea power.

    Prayer to Ones Guardian Angelor a Happy Hour o Death

    My Guardian Angel: I know not when or how I shall die. It is possible

    I may be carried o suddenly and that beore my last sigh, I may be

    deprived o all intelligence. Yet, how many things I would wish to

    say to God on the threshold o eternity. In the ull reedom o my will today, I

    come to charge you to speak or me at that earul moment. You will say to Him

    then, O my good Angel:

    Tat I wish to die in the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church in which all the

    saints since Jesus Christ have died, and out o which there is no salvation.

    Tat I ask the grace o sharing in the innite merits o my Redeemer and that

    I desire to die in pressing my lips to the Cross that was bathed in His Blood!

    Tat I detest my sins because they displease Him and that I ask pardon,

    through the love o Him, or all my enemies as I wish mysel to be pardoned.

    Tat I die willingly because He orders it and that I throw mysel with con-

    dence into His adorable Heart awaiting all His Mercy.

    Tat in my inexpressible desire to go to Heaven, I am disposed to suer ev-

    erything it may please His sovereign justice to inict on me.

    Tat I love Him beore all things, above all things, and or His own sake;

    that I wish and hope to love Him with the Elect, His Angels, and the Blessed

    Mother during all eternity.

    Do not reuse me, O my Angel Guardian, to be my interpreter with God and

    My wie, Vicki, and I moved to New Hampshire to benear Saint Benedict Center in July o 2011. We hadspent two years praying to Saint Joseph or our house

    to sell in Michigan so that we could make the move. Tankully,

    soon ater I was able to retire, our prayer was answered.Our daughter Christine had already moved near the Centerin 2006. She is now married to Joseph Bryan who comes roma amily that has been devoted riends o the Center and thirdorder members or nearly three decades. Joe and Christine havebeen blessed with a twenty-two-month-old girl named Trse.

    Our daughters marriage, theavailability o a daily tradition-al Mass, and the opportunity tobe a part o an active Catholiclay community dedicated togrowing in the knowledge othe Faith and working out theirsalvation as one body in charitymotivated us to make this lie-altering change.

    Our rst visit to the Centerwas in 2000. We had been at-tending the Novus Ordo at a lo-cal parish up until 1998, whena Catholic riend-o-a-riendmentioned to us that he attend-ed a Latin Mass in Nappanee,Indiana, and he thought, right-ly, that we might like to attend.Te Sunday Mass was a sunghigh Mass and we loved it. Ithad been thirty-ve years sincewe had been at Mass in a church

    with an altar, a centered tabernacle, and a communion rail.Ater going there every Sunday and Holy Day or a time, we

    made some wonderul riends. It didnt take long beore we wereinvited into their homes or brunches, which complemented thespontaneous and inspiring Catholic conversation. John Chabotand his amily were particularly helpul and kind to us and theytaught us many things about the Faith. John related the story ohow his ather stumbled across Father Feeney and the Centers

    doctrinal crusade, which led him to take the whole amily to vis-it the Centers monastery in Still River, Massachusetts, in 1971.John was only a boy then but he remembered well his meetingFather Feeney and the brothers and sisters o the Slaves o theImmaculate Heart o Mary. He also explained how his atherknew something was very wrong in the Church. His discoveryo Saint Benedict Center and the dogma no salvation outsidethe Catholic Church was the answer he had been looking orin his search or ultimate causes o the corrosive demolition that,beore his eyes, was undermining the Church at rapid speed.Ater learning about this, Vicki and I wanted to visit the Center

    ourselves. So, about eleven years ago, as I mentioned beore, wearrived at Saint Benedict Center in Richmond and met BrotherFrancis and all the religious, along with some wonderul Catho-lic amilies. Gods graces were everywhere!

    Another important event that aided us on our grace-lledpath was attending our rst Catholic conerence, which was theSaint Joseph Forum in South Bend, Indiana. We met Catholicsthere rom all over the country (many, too, were supporters oSBC) and we learned much. It was here that I rst heard GaryPotter speak and then I read his book, After the Boston HeresyCase. We also met many zealous priests at the Saint Joseph con-erence. Aterwards, we were able to attend our rst Saint Bene-dict Center conerence in 2004, which was held in FitchburgMassachusetts. At this conerence, and during ve more years oattending annual SBC conerences, we became acquainted withmany more dedicated Catholic amilies who lived in surround-ing New England states.

    Seven years had passed by as a traditional Catholic and I wasbecoming more and more interested in the third order o the

    Slaves o the Immaculate Heart o Mary. Since our whole am-ily had already made the consecration to Our Lady accordingto Saint Louis de Monort, it seemed good to become her thirdorder members also, which we did together in 2005 with im-

    mense joy. Making this consecration had another eect: it letour hearts with a desire to move and live near the RichmondSBC community permanently.

    I must also mention the many tapes, CDs, books, publica-tions, and newsletters that had a strong inuence on our movinghere. On our visits to Richmond we always looked orward tohearing, rst-hand, about the brothers and sisters apostolic ac-tivities with their travels, talks, and book-selling work along thehighways and byways o our cities business and marketplaces.Its certainly impressive and upliting to know the religious arecontacting thousands o souls personally and through the mediaall around the country.

    I almost orgot to mention our visit in 2003 to the originalSBC monastery in Still River, Massachusetts. While there welearned a lot more about the history o Saint Benedict Centerrom the hospitable sisters o Saint Annes House, who, in 1949,were among the pioneering members o the order. We also visitedthe cemetery where the ounders, Father Feeney and Sister Cath-erine, along with many o their ellow religious, were buried. Wewere received most charitably at the abbey as well, where one othe brothers gave us a tour o the relic room. Literally hundredso rst-class relics o well-known saints, in golden reliquaries,adorn the walls and niches there. It is a beautiul and inspira-tional place. Ater the holy tabernacle itsel, wherein the DivinePresence graces our Catholic churches, I can say that we were ina holy place indeed!

    I would like to nish this with a word o gratitude or thegenerous charity and kindness we have received over the yearsrom the religious and all the amilies in the SBC community.Te picture would not be complete without saying Tank Youor all o the prayers oered or us and the hospitality we have

    received. Te whole community opens their doors and will tryto help in any and all needs one may have, sometimes even withemployment, i possible; all o which demonstrates their desireo living the ourteen works o corporal and spiritual mercy and

    more. Deo Gratias!
