PROFILE Manchanda Associates is a professional consultancy firm, offering expertise in architecture, interiors, health care planning as well as urban and environmental design. It consists of a complimentary design team capable of providing above range of services. The team comprises of principle architect Mr. R.C. Manchanda a graduate from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (1955) and post graduate in Community Planning from McGill University, Canada (1970); Mr. Shamit Manchanda a graduate from the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi, India (1989). The firm was established in 1993 after Mr. R C Manchanda left the Govt. of India service as Chief Architect, after working for more than 30 years, and Shamit Manchanda left a well-known consultancy, to start their own practice. With Mr. R C Manchanda's rich and varied experience in designing and executing offices and institutional complexes, telecom buildings, housing and urban design projects throughout the country, and Shamit Manchanda's experience at handling prestigious works for embassies and multi-national companies, the firm has dealt with a number of successful projects till date.

MEDANTA GANGANAGAR HOSPITAL

Medanta Ganganagar Hospital is a 200 bedded Super Speciality Hospital in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. This state of the art hospital was designed keeping in mind the latest advancements in healthcare technology and design. A number of energy efficient systems have been adopted to make the facility green and sustainable.

The H-shape of the building helped in creating distinct zones for segregating independent departments while keeping the vertical circulation central. This ensured easy and unobstructed movement of patients, doctors and visitors, which is of prime importance in the functioning of any hospital. The H-shape also enabled the addition of an additional block for future expansion. A ramp has been provided to connect all levels for the convenience of physically handicapped persons as well as for evacuation of patients in case of fire.

Natural light and ventilation are essential elements for designing any building, especially hospitals. A lot of hospitals are being planned today as centrally air-conditioned facilities, but that does not mean one should sacrifice these crucial elements. The orientation of the buildings has been kept such to maximize glazing on the north and the south faces while effectively blocking the hot sun on the eastern and the western faces. The H-shape ensures natural light and ventilation to almost the entire building while still offering mutual shade to cut down the heat.

Wall and floor finish for wards, ICUs and waiting areas are selected in such a way that infection and dust accumulation is minimised. Sizes of the tiles were chosen in such a way that the number of joints was minimised. Antibacterial paint is applied on walls to cut down on the spread of infection.

Though the project did not undergo any green rating, systems have been adopted to make the building Green, Sustainable and Energy efficient. Insulated glass panels have been installed to minimize heat gain while still maintaining large glazing for increasing day-lighting within buildings. Wastewater recycling and high-efficiency chillers for HVAC were some of the strategies that were also implemented.

NIZAM’S INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences is a 1000-bedded premier healthcare and teaching institute-cum-hospital in southern India. The project had the brief of adding a 300 bedded Super Specialty Hospital and a 200 bedded Accident (Emergency) & Trauma Hospital at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad, under the Pradhan Mantri Swastha Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY).

The profile of the two sites, their inter-relationship across an internal road and relationship with the adjoining development has determined the shape of two separate buildings connected by a link corridor at upper floor levels. Such an arrangement allows easy access to both Specialty Hospital and Accident (Trauma) & Emergency hospital while ensuring connectivity of similar functions of both blocks to draw required support from each other.

Easy and unhindered movement of patients, doctors and visitors is of prime importance in the functioning of any hospital. There was a need for distinct entries and parking for doctors, visitors and service personnel. A roundabout has been created to avoid clash of

traffic coming from various directions. Internally a system of corridors connects vertical movement cores strategically located at all corners as well as in the middle. A ramp has been provided to connect all levels for the convenience of physically handicapped persons as well as for evacuation of patients in case of fire. The two building have been linked at floors, two, three, four and five for effectively utilising various facilities without duplicating them.

The façade of the building is interspersed with transparent and opaque elements composed of large glass panels and solid shafts. The two-tone grit finish, created using Dholpur and Jaisalmer stone not only provide a permanent finish, but also gives the hospital a sharp look while creating an array of clean lines throughout the elevation.

GOVERNMENT BONE & JOINT HOSPITAL

The proposed 120 Bedded Specialized Unit is a state of the art expansion to the Government Bone & Joint Hospital at Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. A World Bank funded project, the upcoming Specialized Unit is an important part of the “Jhelum & Tawi Flood Recovery Project” which was initiated after the region experienced torrential monsoon rains causing major flooding and landslides in September 2014.

The building has been designed to accommodate non-critical spaces / departments on the ground floor. The first floor has the radiology department and a 40 bedded female ward. The second floor accommodates the ICU and OT Complex. The third and fourth have 40 beds each, both male wards. The wards have been designed such that all beds get natural light and a view of the Doodh Ganga Canal outside.

Learning from evidence based design that access to nature plays an important role in the recovery of a patient, a healing garden has been proposed on the Ground Floor. The new building is connected to existing buildings through the extended corridor system. The Ward and OT Floor of the Proposed Block respectively will be connected to the Ward & OT Floor of the existing IPD(Ward) & OT Block, thus, functionally, becoming a part of the existing set-up, while being independently accessible to the general public also.

TASHICHOLING HOSPITAL

The 20 Bedded Tashicholing Hospital is a proposed Government Healthcre Facility in Samtse, Bhutan. The Hospital will have a vast OPD, with departments including general OPD, physiotherapy, opthamology, dental, ENT, community health, traditional medicine, NCD/diabetic and radiodiagnosis. The Hospital will also be having separate general wards and pediatric wards.

The building has been designed in an H-Shape which helps in creating distinct zones for segregating independent departments while keeping the vertical circulation central. Planning of the Hospital is done in such a way that adequate space is available for future expansion in a functional manner. OPDs and Diagnostic Departments are situated on the lower floors to avoid unnecessary traffic on upper floors. Wards are a separate independent floor. Support Services have their own separate blocks. Vertical movement is located at the focal point of the building.

The design of the hospital also follows the latst energy effieiency norms. Large glazing provided on Northern and Southern faces to maximize daylight. Minimum glazing provided on Eastern and Western faces to reduce heat gain in summers H-Shape of the building further promotes natural lighting to all parts of the building.

S. L. MINDA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

A hospital in a rural area today, does not mean it is a non descript structure with bare minimum facilities. Aspirations and expectations of the rural population for quality healthcare infrastructure is at par with urban areas. With this basis the Moga Devi Minda Charitable Trust, a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of UNO MINDA and SPARK MINDA group of industries decided to build a 50 bedded modern Hospital facility as part of their CSR commitments at Bagla Village some 25 km outside Hisar. Phase two of the project envisages adding another 50 beds and a Nursing College.

The brief stated that the hospital was not to be over powering in appearance but yet equipped will all facilities of a modern hospital. The project was designed as a 3 storied structure with a landscaped central courtyard ensuring natural light and ventilation to all areas. The zoning was primarily to achieve efficient and unhindered movement of patients, doctors and visitors while avoiding cross traffic. The OPD, Emergency and Administrative areas are on the ground floor; the Wards and Intensive care units on the First Floor and Operation theaters and Birthing Centre on the third floor for undisturbed activities.

SANJAY GANDHI MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital was commissioned in April 1986 as a 100-bedded General Hospital with related facilities including residential accommodation for doctors, nurses, and other staff members. The Hospital, however, did not have Maternity and Pediatric facilities, and the need for such services had been growing over the years. The project involved construction of 150 bedded Maternity and Child wards with separate facilities such as OPD’s, X-ray Department, operation theaters, labor rooms and laboratory facilities. An Emergency block, Medical/General stores, M.R.D. and Blood bank were also created which utilized certain existing facilities such as kitchen, laundry, and incinerator. Hostel buildings for nurses and resident doctors were also added to meet the additional demands.

The Maternity and Child block was designed as a long multistoried block and placed parallel to the existing buildings for climatic and aesthetic considerations. The building has been designed to accommodate an Entrance hall with pharmacy, and all the OPD’s, X-ray department etc. on the lower levels with various wards, Labour rooms and Operation theaters etc. on the upper levels. The basement level accommodates an Air-conditioning plant room, a Secondary ESS and other services. A new 26 bedded Emergency Ward Block was also added in the hospital. It consists of an Examination hall, Minor O.T., Emergency Wards, and various
