About Para-badminton

• Badminton is a Paralympic sport. The International Paralympic Committee announced to include badminton as an official sport for the first time at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

• Para-badminton athletes compete in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Athletes are classified into “Sport Classes” to ensure fairness in competition. In para-badminton there are six Sport Classes.

Wheelchair 1 WH 1

Players in this class requires a wheelchair to play badminton. Players in this Sport Class usually have impairment in both lower limbs and trunk function.

Wheelchair 2 WH 2

A player in this class could have impairment in one or both lower limbs and minimal or no impairment of the trunk.

Standing Lower SL 3

In this class a player must play standing. The player could have impairment in one or both lower limbs and poor walking/running balance.

Standing Lower SL 4

A second standing class where the player has a lesser impairment compared to Sport Class SL 3. The player could have impairment in one or both lower limbs and minimal impairment in walking/running balance.

Standing Upper SU 5

The player in this class has impairment of the upper limbs.

Short Stature SS 6

These are players who have a short stature due to a genetic condition often referred to as “dwarfism”.

About Her • Apart from being a Para-athlete, Manasi is also a software-professional and a change

maker. She wishes to drive a shift in how disability and Para-sport are perceived

• She did her schooling from Atomic Energy Central schools and then Bachelor in Engineering with majors in Electronics, from K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering, Mumbai. She recently quit her job at Atos India where she was working as a Sr. Software Engineer and moved to Ahmedabad in first week of September. She is now working with Ahmedabad Cooperative Bank.

• In the next few years (4 to be precise), Manasi will be participating and representing our country at various international tournaments (some of the major tournaments - World championships in 2017, Asian Games 2018, World championships in 2019 followed by Paralympics 2020).

• She started playing badminton at the age of 10 when she got selected in a summer camp organized by Department of Atomic Energy (a talent hunt program). Over the years she has represented and won various competitions for her school, college, district and corporate organization.

• In 2011, she lost her left leg in an accident and now wears an artificial leg for everyday use. She started playing badminton (professionally) in 2014 and there has been no looking back ever since.

• Last year she won the “Incredible Indian” award from Rotary International

• She loves travelling and makes sure to visit at least 3 new places a year. In her free time she loves gardening, cooking and reading

• She also gets invites from India’s premier Business Schools, Engineering Colleges , Corporate, NGOs, etc. as a keynote speaker / guest lecturer, to spread awareness about para-sports and disability

Short term

Her goal for this year is to participate in maximum tournaments (National and

International). These tournaments are essential for her continued

development as an athlete and also to improve her International ranking:

1. She aspires to win a Gold at the World Championships this year

2. She wishes to improve her ranking in Singles category (SL3). By the end

of this year, she aims at becoming World # 2
