First it serves the needs of students who did not have an undergraduate business degree but wish to complete the pre-requisites necessary to qualify for an MBA program. The Truman Institute at Truman State University, in cooperation with the School of Business, is proud to introduce grad-uate-level coursework that offers work-ing professionals key practical manage-ment knowledge leading to a Managerial Foundations Certificate (MFC). The MFC prepares participants to deal with increas-ing global competitiveness while manag-ing resources and people more efficiently and effectively. In addition, upon comple-tion of the MFC, participants will have completed a number of the prerequisites needed to succeed in any master’s of business administration (MBA) program.

The MFC provides participants a working knowledge of proven management and leadership techniques combined with sound financial analysis. Participants learn foundations of human resource management, conflict manage-ment, negotiations, project management,

and international management. Enrolled students may select coursework depending on their current or future career path needs. All courses are available online.

The faculty at Truman designed the certificate for practicing managers who want to update and enhance their management skills or for working professionals who want a management career path within a complex business environment. The faculty also geared the certificate for those who are contemplating enrolling in an MBA program and want to begin by taking some common graduate prerequisite courses.

Truman offers the coursework in eight-week-or-less concentrated sessions for added convenience and timely completion.

Coursework is offered entirely online.

Is this program right for me?

CourseworkThe Managerial Foundations Certificate requires completion of five classes. All participants must take the two required courses and then select three additional courses from among electives. All courses are 3 credit hours each.

The Managerial Foundations Certificate has been proposed for inclusion in Tru-man State’s accreditation relationship with the Higher Learning Commission. This proposal was reviewed in Spring 2011, with formal action expected by Summer 2011.

many possible participants (i.e. disputants, constituents, advocates, and neutral third parties) will occur. A review of the various dispute resolution processes will be completed with an emphasis on negotiation as a means of resolving a dispute. Preparation for a negotia-tion, negotiation strategies, third party involvement, and important situational factors will be discussed.

BUS 630G Contracts and Regulation (Elective). In this course students will examine the various types of contracts. Specifically, the requirements for a valid contract: offer and acceptance, consideration, capacity, legality, and genuine assent. Course participants will also explore third party rights, the discharge of con-tracts, contract remedies, and the interpretation of contracts. Topics also include regulation: constitu-tional limits on law and regulation by the federal and state government. In addition, students will delve into the areas of administrative law, employment and labor law, environmental law, antitrust, and regulation of government-private contracts.

BUS 635G Financial Reporting & Analysis. This course introduces concepts underlying external financial reporting and provides an understanding of the accounting terminology and standards needed for interpreting and evaluating financial statements. Topics include generally accepted accounting principles, finan-cial statements, financial reporting alternatives, and fi-nancial statement analysis. The course includes cases and discussions of contemporary financial reporting issues.

BUS 650G Accounting for Planning and Control. This course introduces cost concepts and cost behav-ior patterns that affect management decision making. Topics such as cost-volume-profit analysis, budgeting and financial forecasting, volume and non-volume cost assignment, relevant cost analysis, and strategic cost management tools such as value-chain analysis and the balanced scorecard will be explored. Short case studies will be used to illustrate many of the topics.

Course DescriptionsBUS 620G Financial Management (Required). Explores the principles of financial management for non-financial corporations. Topics include financial planning and forecasting, principles of valuation, capital budgeting and investment decision making under uncer-tainty, capital structure and the cost of capital, and the management of current assets and short-term financing. Case studies will focus on using financial analysis for decision making.

BUS 625G Organizational Behavior (Required). Analysis of the behavioral aspects of an organization and the study of human interaction at individual, group, and organizational levels to develop behavioral compe-tency and improve relationships of people, structure, and technology in business organizations. At the core are topics such as personality, motivation, interaction process, quality circles, leadership, and corporate culture.

BUS 610G Managing in a Global Environment (Elective). An overview of management function in the context of a global environment. Issues in organizational behavior, human resources, strategic management, and management structures are considered in the context of different sociocultural settings, national institutions, and legal and competitive environments.

BUS 612G Project Management (Elective). An introduction to project management principles, methods, techniques, and tools that a manager will use to plan, schedule, organize, and control non-routine activities in order to achieve schedule, budget, and performance objectives.

BUS 615G Conflict Resolution / Negotiation (Elective). The course will cover the broad topic of conflict management with an emphasis on negotiation as a means of resolving conflict. Antecedents and sources of conflict will be discussed. An examination of the

Online System RequirementsFaculty offer all the courses within the Managerial Foundations Certificate fully online. Faculty expect students to receive assignments, listen to lectures, download content, upload completed assignments, and engage in discussions with fellow students using the Blackboard learning management system. Blackboard is a fully-accessible system. Candidates can view Blackboard using either Windows or Mac OS along with most commonly-used web browsers. Upon enrollment, students will receive instruc-tions for accessing the Truman network systems via a Broadband connection. (DSL, Cable Modem).

Graduation RequirementsDetailed graduation requirements are described on the program website, including a minimum required GPA of a 3.0 and stipulations regarding continuous enrollment. Interested students should review these requirements carefully before enrolling.
