    What are Management Information Systems?

    Definition:

A computer system designed to help managers plan and direct business andorganizational operations.

Computer-based or manual system that transforms data intoinformation useful in the support of decision making

Management Information Systems (MIS) is the term given to the disciplinefocused on the integration of computer systems with the aims andobjectives on an organisation.

Davis (1974) describes MIS as an integrated, man/machine system forproviding information to support the operations, management, anddecision-making functions in an organization.

A MIS can be defined as a system that processes information input in theform of data (the raw material) and helps support the management indecision-making and strategic planning.

An 'MIS' is a planned system of the collecting, processing, storing anddisseminating data in the form of information needed to carry out thefunctions of mana ement

    MIS functions can be classified

    (1) To generate reports-forexample, financialstatements, inventory status reports, or performancereports needed for routine or non-routine purposes.

    (2) To answer what-if questions asked by management. For example, questions such as "What would happen tocash flow if the company changes its credit term for itscustomers?" can be answered by MIS. This type of MIScan be called Simulation.

    (3) To support decision making. This type of MIS isappropriately called Decision Support System (DSS).DSS attempts to integrate the decision maker, the database, and the quantitative models being used.

    Components of MIS

HardwareInput and output devices constitute the hardware components of MIS Server, computer, network equipment, printer etc

SoftwareThe programs and applications that convert data into machine-readablelanguage are known as software C++, java, developer 6i,Visual basic, Adobe illustrator, photoshop etc

ProceduresProcedures are sets of rules or guidelines, which an organizationestablishes for the use of a omputer-based information system

PersonnelThe computer experts, managers, users, analysts, programmers, databasemanagers, and many other computer professionals who utilize thecomputer-based information systems are the personnel in a managementinformation system
