But where does digital credibility, your reputation come from? What is reputation management?

Digital identity:• What you create online through

facebook, twitter, book reviews at amazon and more

• What others create about you (tagged photos, etc.)  including governmental resources – tax records, criminal records,, etc.

• Your footprints across the web• Your history, your permanent record,

your resume• Your Brand= You are a Brand• Googling yourself

Why should I be worried about my online reputation (or lack of one)? • Your career: You are job seeking or want to be promoted.

• Recruiters and headhunters use social media. • You work in or are interested in a career in information, technology,

business/sales, public relations, news, photography, art or a media career – your career may have an expectation of having a web presence

• The web is a resume and even a reference tool• You are a student (or about to be a student):

• High school or college student who is looking to get into a competitive program

• Looking for scholarships or internships• You need help: resume review, networking, advice, volunteer opps, etc.• Others are creating a presence for you; wouldn’t you rather be in charge?

..but I am worried about privacy how can this help? • Reputation management is about creating a foundation –

you control how much information is shared and to whom. You don’t have to allow people into your house – you can meet them in your virtual space on your terms.

• You set privacy settings and reveal no more than you are comfortable with.

• You create a POSITIVE and professional presence on the web will help offset any negative presences.

• We will look at a few privacy settings for Facebook, Twitter, and linkedin and then look at how to create a PROFESSIONAL presence on the web.

..keeping your private life well… private…

• Don’t give out more information than you feel comfortable with EVER.

• Do not give out your street address, birthdate, etc. Be very careful of giving out information that is commonly used as a security questions (mother’s maiden name)

• Check and update settings of social media carefully. • Decide if you want a private account or a public account and

understand the difference. • Facebook, Myspace, Hashable, and Linkedin have controls in place

for friendship/networking. You must approve requests and can have a private or public account.

• Twitter is only public or private; the only way to limit followers is through having a private account.

University of Georgia 2011Robin Fay aka @georgiawebgurl

..on friending, networking, and that thing…

• You do not have to friend everyone -- including people you supervise. “Friend” is a network relationship but you also want to be aware of appropriate connections.

• Do not feel intimidated into friending or connecting with anyone. If someone is bothering you or threatening you, report them and then unfriend and/or block them.

• If you can’t unfriend (such as on twitter), use the block feature if you do not feel comfortable be connected to someone.

• Be aware of what apps you allow to access your information.

..my policy…

•You can control some of the information that others see about you at facebook; however, I decided if I didn't want people to read my feeds, then I shouldn't "friend" them. I use this rule for other social media sites, too. However, I do use facebook lists to only post to my family and to my “game gang” activities which only affect those groups of people.

•I keep part of profile public, so that those I meet at conferences or events can find me.

•I don't 'friend' anyone I supervise or any students from one of my workshops/presentations, but if they friend me, I accept the friendship.

•I wrote my own social media policy. A very good idea if you are struggling with what you want to accomplish and how.

..My social media policy:Use appropriate social media tools to professionally connect and cultivate a community of interesting individuals while sharing my experience, knowledge, and creativity. I will not friend/follow network everyone for the sake of numbers.

Best practices1. Participate2. Be respectful and appropriate - remember your audience3. Share but don't overshare - if your mom or boss shouldn't see it, reconsider!4. Build a community and be part of it.5. Stay aware of privacy and TOS; be aware of what you can control and what you can’t. Make sure to read TOS and Privacy statements – they do sometimes change. Don’t be caught by surprise and don't violate the privacy of others.6. Use preferences and settings wisely to control and manage your social network.

University of Georgia 2011Robin Fay aka @georgiawebgurl

7. Do not spam, spy, cyberstalk, bully or engage in illegal activities online. If you are a victim of those behaviors, deal with them appropriately. Report inappropriate behavior.8.Consider carefully who you friend. Be very careful about friending staff that you supervise, students, or children that you may know.9. Use the appropriate tool. You do not have to use them all, or even connect with each person in every space.10. Accept that your social network may not have the same political or religious beliefs as you, and they, are well, human.…finally, if it’s on the web – it’s published. It may be private, but it is archived somewhere.

Smart social media: –Read the TOS and Privacy statements. Yes, they are boring and confusing….and they sometimes change.–Always doublecheck preferences or options in any social media site.–Think about the information you give away. Use a “throwaway” email address if possible. –Don’t make your private life public (unless that is your goal). Be aware of social networking etiquette.–..and always be aware of UGA Computer usage policies.

Smart social media: -- "Claim" your ID at sites even if you are not using it-- Google yourself-- Network with aspirational professionals, e.g., connect

with them on linkedin or twitter-- Keep your private life, well... private > Keep up with

privacy settings -- Create professional and personal accounts, if needed-- You do not have to accept every “friend” request, either,

if the person does not fit into your strategy/policy for a particular site.

• Cultivating a positive and appropriate online presence for your particular field of work is important.

• Important enough that there are even companies who do “damage

control” and reputation management.

• These companies and professionals attempt to "work" google and social media sites to manage, grow, and yes, even repair, online reputations. (Push the positive up; push the negative down)

Tips for professional networkingDevelop your community:• Search for colleagues you already know and respect. • Search their friend/follow lists to see who they follow.• If using twitter, watch the #FF or #followfriday• If using a service with groups (such as linkedIN) join

groups that fit your professional development needs.• Always include a personal message when sending a

friend/follow/network request.• Let people know how to network with you. • Of course, that doesn’t mean that you have to tell them

about your private (personal) accounts – just the ones where you do network.
